Syfy announced that its highly anticipated prequel series Caprica will kick off with a two-hour premiere on Jan. 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will air Fridays at 10 p.m.
The show follows two rival families and their patriarchs—Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) and Joseph Adama (Esai Morales)—as they compete and thrive in the vibrant realm of the 12 Colonies, a society recognizably close to our own.
Caprica also stars Paula Malcomson (Amanda Graystone), Polly Walker (Sister Clarice Willow), Magda Apanowicz (Lacy) and Alessandra Torresani (Zoe Graystone). The series is from Universal Cable Productions and is executive-produced by Ronald D. Moore, David Eick and Jane Espenson. Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights) directed the pilot.

I have a distinct feeling the series will suck. Brought to you by the guy who brought us such 'Winners' as Virtuality im not holding my breath.

The Friday death slot..... How nice. why not just stop now and save some money?
By ilikescifi at 9:50 PM ON 07/27/09
reader: while Friday is considered the death slot for a lot of shows, BSG and the "Stargate"s had much of their run on Friday nights. BSG had that exact same time slot, in fact, for most of their run.

It could be a surprise hit .

Ron Moore (days of our lives) will ruin this one as he did battlestar and voyager by making story about the characters rather focasing on the shows theme "SCIENCE FICTION" no more people drama please
By Muldfeld at 12:42 AM ON 07/28/09
tardale, what do you mean? What is science fiction without drama? Didn't you prefer BSG or DS9 to the technobabble scenes in TNG? 'cause you know that science fiction is just setting, right? It doesn't tell a story.
Also, Ron Moore was on Voyager for a few months, tops. He rewrote the season premiere for the 1999-2000 season and got credit for "Barge of the Dead" and left because of Braga and Berman's management of the writers' staff. Did you prefer Voyager aside from those 2 eps? I hated all of Voyager, especially after the 2nd season, when I realized I was wasting my time and the show was never going to get better.
Science fiction is merely the setting that allows us to explore the human condition through historical themes, so BSG allowed us to explore terrorism, a rigged election, torture, occupation, a political trial -- all with one crew. If we had a historical series, the actors would vary, as would the geographical setting and viewers might write off some characters' experiences because they are non-American. That's the beauty of what Ron Moore and Ira Steven Behr do.

I can't wait for this show to premiere and I just KNOW (ie have faith) that at least the first 10 episodes that Ron Moore is overseeing will be great. I think Mark Verheiden and someone else already wrote the first 2 eps over a year ago when Syfy requested them. I'd be happier if Ron Moore kept writing and if Michael Rymer was involved, but I'm still optimistic.
Ron Moore's legacy of deep political insight avoided by the mainstream media and dramatic realism through moving story will remain alive and well -- at least for the first 10 eps.

I will watch, but based on the pilot it already has to pick up the pace to be even considered a part of the BSG universe. The pilot was not very informative, character building, nor really well tied into the BSG stories, except at the end we see Adama, and it used a ton of unneeded sex to try and hold the viewers. If that is the plan, take it to HBO then. I love my sex, mind you, but not necessary in a well told, well written story. I hope that the story does get to tie in the Final 5, and other prequel issues that are begging to be explored, bu were overlooked in the pilot (to make room for the nudity I guess).

Going to suck on an epic scale. The pilot was A-W-F-U-L. The acting was marginal, the story was not that great, and I'm glad to see they avoided cliche by naming the quirky, slightly rebellious teen-age daughter "Zoe". Phew!

icy_hot12002,
While I disagree with you about the quality of the Caprica pilot, I do totally know what you're talking about with the overuse of the name Zoe. The name is everywhere and she's always the quirky, rebellious teenager. It's become quite a cliche.

Glad to know I'm not the only one ragging on that Zoe thing! It's terrible. Either Zoe, or Chloe. Take your pick.

Please do make it about the characters. Sci-fi needs both science and fiction, otherwise Battlestar would've just been the writers speculating on gravity plating and the possible mechanics of FTL drives. That might be entertaining in it's own right, but I'm happy with the BSG we were given. I hope Caprica will be comparably good.

Did you see the Sci Fi Wire article on Gabrielle Union joining FlashForward? Her character's name is Zoey! Unbelievable!

I don't think this series will be a big hit because it'll be too deep and adult for kids and most sci-fi geeks won't see it as "sci-fi" enough, but I think it might develop a cult following because it looks quite intelligent. The pilot was okay and I'm quite looking forward to the series...even after the half-brilliant / half-crap ending to Galactica earlier this year.

I do have faith in Moore to not go too nuts, however:
****SPOILERS****
Any show that ends with a 16 year old in a robot's body, as a PREMISE for the show...not a good thing

Is it just me, but does Alessandra Torresani look like Zooey Deschanel?
