Transformers 2 is No. 1, breaking holiday weekend tie

\<em\>Transformers 2\<\/em\> is No. 1, breaking holiday weekend tie

The big frakkin' robots appear to have won out over the woolly mammoths after all. Updated studio estimates released today show that Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was No. 1 in the photo-finish race for box-office supremacy this weekend, topping the domestic pack with $42.4 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

We reported yesterday that Transformers and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs were tied for the top spot when preliminary box-office estimates for the July 4 weekend were released.

But morning updates from various studios consistently showed Ice Age in second place with less than $42 million in Friday-Sunday box office. On Sunday, both Paramount and Fox estimated their pictures had taken in a chart-topping $42.5 million in box office over the three-day Fourth of July weekend. Final official data from Nielsen EDI will be released midday today.

Sunday estimates showed Transformers with a cumulative $293.5 million for its first 12 days in domestic release. The Ice Age three-quel boasted a $67.5 million since opening Wednesday.

$293 Million?!?! Did I read that right?

How can such a poorly written story do so much better than Star Trek?

Its Blasphemy I tell ya!

By ulic at 5:56 PM ON 07/06/09

Because people aren't smart enough to want actual plot in their movies, that's why...

I felt oddly similar when hearing about the next DaVinci tale making wads of dough.

Movies are no longer required to have more than surface quality to rake it in.

Cmon Transformers wasnt that bad. the sequel stunk less than the first one.

"How can such a poorly written story do so much better than Star Trek?"

Didn't the same writers write both movies? Either way, star trek had a very bad story.
But both were fun movies.
I dare say that Transformers 2 was better than the 1st. By a mile. I could pick it apart scene by scene and tell you what didn't work for me. But I had fun. And much of the 2nd movie drew more from the cartoon than the first did. So my inner nerd was happy.

Well let's back the track up a little and think about this.

Bay wrote the majority of the script for Transformers 2 during the writers strike because he was not part of the writers guild. Orci, Kurtzman, and Kruger, could not touch it because they were members of the guild. Bay did have notes that Orci and Kurtzman had jotted down about the overall theme.

When the three writers came back, Bay gave them what he had wrote and told them to polish it up.

So we can't blame the bad script on the writers as they had hardly anything to do with it.

Lets just agree, this is Spiderman 3 all over again, a huge money maker that leaves a bad taste in the fans mouth. Remember, in its second week its money dropped 61%. In the industry thats pretty big which coul mean word of mouth is getting out and more and more people are choosing to watch it only once but not again......

All Hail Transformers. It was a great movie. So far it is the bet movie this year. I think people are being too biased against the movie. It is one of the best action / special effects movies of all time.
FYI - It had a plot. The Decepticons wanted to drain the Sun's energy to power their technology. So many wars are fought today for power.

The plot of Transformers 2 is better than Xmen (1st movie) and Superman Returns. Magneto uses Rogue to make humans into mutants. Lex uses technology from Krypton to create a continent. It was disappointing how little action and demonstration of the characters powers in those movies. Those are decent superhero movies.

Compare the movie to the latest Batman which was hailed by the critics. There were so many mistakes in that movie. It was not true to the real Batman mythology. People were falling asleep in the last half hour that could be cut. At least Transformers was fast paced and kept your attention throughout. It was also unbelievable in that movie how so many guys were all over that DA. Compare her to Megan Fox. Megan Fox is way prettier and in my opinion a better actress.

Scores. Xmen – B, Superman Returns – C, Batman Returns – B+, Transformers A-.
Transformers would have been better if it were a little less kiddy and was more true to the original series.

You want serious dramatic plot in a movie about alien robots that can change into stuff?

Not quite sure which is more ignorant. Wanting that kind of movie or the movie itself.

The critics hated it and Star Trek (just mention that movie because of previous mention in the thread), but they both worked because they offer the same thing. An approximately 2 hour thrill ride that gives you plenty of wow.

You want more serious drama in scifi? Read a book.

What I want is the dinobots, insecticons and Devistator to have more than a cameo.

It never ceases to amaze me how elitist people can be about movies made about toys. I loved Transformers 2. Ten years ago, you wouldn't expect any movie in this genre to be so technically excellent, and entertaining to not only the people like me who were adult when Transformers came out and didn't watch it much, but also the true die-hard fans, and those who never saw it before like my wife.

Worst of all, Roger Ebert's comment on the movie left me dumbfounded. "A horrible experience of unbearable length" or something like that? Usually critics are able to distance themselves from a technically excellent movie and call it like this: "It's not my cup of tea but it should please fans of the genre."

Well, I write science fiction, I am currently working on a film, and I can tell you, I would pray that I'd ever make a movie half as good as Transformers 2. Sure, it pulled some annoying tricks like all movies of today do: You have the reluctant hero who doesn't give a crap about the world. He just wants to be normal and go to college. You have robots with a fifty foot stride that never seem to catch people. It would have been better if Shia avoided capture by changing direction, which should have frustrated the robots. The robot humping the leg could have been left out.

Other than that, cinematic excellence. It was a bit long. My butt hurt. But I didn't feel like the movie should have ended like I did in The Dark Knight, where I kept waiting for the credits to roll and they never did. This takes nothing away from The Dark Knight. It was a pretty good movie. I enjoyed it except for Batman's voice. Sounded like he had the Flu. It would have been much better of him to use some electronic voice shaping that didn't make him sound like an obscene telephone caller.

I saw Transformer 2 twice, which translates into 25 viewings for a transformer fan. I loved it. I loved it, and I will buy the DVD. I work in a highly technical field, I've been published scores of times and some of you have read me. If you believe you can do better than Michael Bay, and the crew that created this tapestry of cinema, please do so. The world needs you. Otherwise, give it a rest please.

FWIW after 48 days of release:

https://secure.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=nightatthemuseum2.htm

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2 just joined ANGELS & DEMONS, and TRANSFORMERS 2 in surpassing STAR TREK in its worldwide grosses.

ST09 has also dropped out of the top ten worldwide daily grosses and seems not likely to join the $400+ million club leaving STAR TREK THE MOTION PICTURE's inflation adjusted grosses as the only member of the franchise to have done so.

Now that this movie has come and gone, and has been slowly digested by everyone. There is no question it made money. That is the point of summer movies. They don't care about entertaining anything or anyone, it's about money...period. So let's not fool ourselves here.

It did it's job.
Was there things I would have personally liked? Sure.
How about things I didn't like?
Most of it.

That all being said. Let's also not fool ourselves into thinking Bay is some super Director. He is not, but what he does do right is choose movies that focus on his strength. He is known for all flash and no substance. This genre about alien robots is right in his wheelhouse. I personally disliked the script as I found it reduced Megatron to a henchman, but that is me. Also, Prime's "death" wasn't needed at all, and was hardly a good part of the plot. It is an obvious nod to the original cartoon movie, which was commercially motivated to sell the Series 2 toys (killing all / most of the Series 1 characters off, including Prime). An act by the way, which met with HUGE criticism from fans, and actually had a big hand in refocusing the ending of the G.I.JOE cartoon movie later on. (Duke was supposed to die, but was later changed to him falling into a "coma").

Bay put a movie out there that did what it was supposed to do. Make money. But I will proudly stand here and say I did not pay to see this in the theaters. I also did not see the Star Wreck movie in the theaters either. Both decisions made me happy. I will end by saying that while most movies based on my childhood cartoons have made money for studios, the scripts and plots that have been shown do nothing but rape those memories for money, and horrify those who still remember those 20-30 year old cartoons.
