It's going to be close: Preliminary box-office estimates for the July 4 weekend show that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs are tied for the top spot, with an estimated $42.5 million in domestic ticket sales each, the Associated Press reported.
Whether that tie will remain on Monday, when final figures are reported, remains to be seen.
Johnny Depp and Christian Bale's gangster epic Public Enemies, meanwhile, debuted in third place, with $26.2 million.

Transformers? did I see the wrong movie last week because the Transformers movie I saw was horrible! my gripes:
1. no real plot to think of other than re-fried aspects of the original (ie the ending battle scene).
2. dangling plots on the side spliced into the movie that didnt need to be there
3. Robots cursing (did I hear the F word once?). A Drug Reference!!! ??? not appropriate for kids. There were 5 yr olds in the theater when I saw this forgettable movie.
4. ghetto talking robots (OK 'Im not politically correct at all. I just thought it was dumb and a bad stereotype)
5. Megan fox runs through the final battle scene and doesn't get a mark on her - In every shot of her shes kind of sweaty in a sexy Marlon Monroe kind of way - not a bad thing, but come on, this is a kids movie.
6. Whats up with the near death experience at the end - Robots in heaven? What was Bey thinking?
Again, anybody on this list could have done a better job at writing story lines than most of those in Hollywood.

greenhornet482 - I agree with you, the Transformers movie I saw is NOTHING of some critics are saying. Why this crud is making money is just sad. That being said, It's a Bay film. You know this going into it. All flash, no plot, and big explosions. That's it. As for the "Ghetto Robots", you didn't see the animated Transformers movie did you? Wreck-Gar anyone? Bay took a Transformers movie and made it a teen flick with explosions. He makes money, which is all hollywood cares about obviously, but completely destroys ANYTHING related to a plot.

I am one of the biggest opponents of anything Michael Bay makes because it's all pandering garbage. If you like anything he's doing these days, then you like crappy movies.
However, I am equally sick of people saying 'It's a kids' movie, that's not appropriate for a kids' movie.'
It's BASED on a toy. That doesn't instantly mean it's a kids' movie. The fact that you are drawing that correlation means that you have turned off your brain and accepted a nonsensical conditioned response. I would THINK that after last year's 'The Dark Knight', you would know better than to presume that something is child safe just because it's based on something they might play with or experience in a safe format on TV.
Bay never said 'this is a kids' movie', nor is it marketed like one. It's a PG rated movie and last time I checked, 'kids movies' were strictly G rated. More to the point, Bay oesn't have to be responsible for raising your children. You need to raise your children. The movie is violent, has explosions, you KNOW Megan Fox is running around in it and so forth. All of these things are plainly evident in the commercials.
Do your goddamned research before bringing kids to the movie.
The only thing I hate more than a crappy Michael Bay movie are crappy parents complaining that things aren't safe for their children. The onus is on YOU, as parents, to screen ANYTHING you might consider taking your kids to. As lousy as Transformers is, people have the right to spend their hard earned money on it (even if they shouldn't.) They shouldn't have their own moviegoing experience dumbed down just because idiot parents that aren't doing their homework beforehand and are crying like b*tches about it after the fact.
These days, any time you consider taking your children to see a movie, either ask someone you trust who has seen the movie already (my friends who are parents are always asking me if I've seen a particular movie and if so, would it be appropriate for their kids and GOOD ON THEM for doing that) or take a couple hours out of your busy f*cking life and see it yourself first to make sure it's okay. I think your kids are worth it.

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action violence, language, some crude and sexual material, and brief drug material.
Says it all for me

Taiso, I have to agree with you about my comments that "its a kids movie" Its not necessarily a kids movie and I stand corrected and appreciate your feedback on my comments. I also agree that parents should do their homework about what they take their kids to
thanks for your words!
