This is either kinda inspirational or really pathetic, depending on your feelings about Star Trek and/or free theater in the park. We'll let you decide, after the jump.
It's a video feature from the Portland (Ore.) Oregonian newspaper's Web site, "Trek in the Park," by a new theater company called Atomic Arts.

I saw this on TrekMovie, and as a classical actor I have to say it's a sad sad thing. And I'm also a massive Trekkie.

What a great sandwich--2 slices of white bread 60's TV, surrounding sincere, fun equal helpings of cheese and fresh ham!
Seriously--a bunch better than the umpteenth showing of "The Fantasticks" or "Midsummer Night's Dream"!
Well Done! \\//_ Live Long and Prosper, Atomic Arts!

Hi!
That OregonLive video is misrepresentation of the production. Here is a slideshow from Portland's Geek in the City website and a review from its moderator.

Looks like a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Bravo!

I live in this pathetic town, notice how everyone in the production is a fat loser? Especially the "women"? Portland and everything about it sucks.

Wow, and the greats always said it would be television and movies that killed theater.
By j-dub at 3:47 AM ON 07/16/09
Wow, pathetic. What I see is a lot of people who cant get into REAL theater so they go to the park and make a mockery of a great classic TV show.

I love the way people come down on anything that doesn't fit the status quo. These people are out there making art, what are you doing? Maybe spend more time on your art and less time denigrating theirs.

I love how people consider anything art today. nghtlfe that isnt art its morons in the park. Monet, Picasso art, idiots in the park acting out a crappy tv show not art. just stupid

Interesting really. The original TV show in many ways was actually more classical theater than special effects. Especially in the 3rd season when budgets were really cheap.
I do think the Shatner performance could improve, but I love the theme singer.

And jJust when I finished explaining to my boss that people who like Star Trek and science fiction in general aren't geeky! :P

It looks like they are having fun. The last time I checked, parks are open to the public to have fun. Keep up having fun and ignore those trying to bring you down. You brought a smile to my face.

And did any of you commenting actually go to the park and watch it in person? I did and they did a GREAT job! Three cheers to those with the guts to get up and perform for others, FOR FREE, and risk ridicule from armchair/computer chair geeks with nothing better to do than criticize others.

We salute this clever and joyous event! Congratulations for the great turnout and for making people happy through "Star Trek"!

After seeing it last night, I have to say it's pretty damn cool. Half of what makes it so great is the huge, enthusiastic crowd. The place is packed. Go see it -- next week is the last.

I saw the live performance it tonight, and it was superb! Unfortunately, the local paper presented goofy footage from a rehearsal that doesn't do the production justice at all.
The amphitheater was packed. The sound effects were right. Spock had a perfect Vulcan haircut, ear and eyebrows, and played the part really well. Checkov had a thick Russian accent. The blocking was exactly like the episode, but brilliantly adapted to theater in the round. All the iconic moments were there, and it was played with great reverence and humor. And it was in NO WAY a mockery of the show or its actors. Nor was it pathetic, unlike some of the posters here.
I think Atomic Arts has started something here. Portland's Trek community ate it up. Next summer's episode is "Space Seed," and I can't wait to see it!

Only caught the second half of the show today (IGP is new to Portland and therefore we got hopelessly lost) but it was pretty damn enjoyable. Loved the breakaway shirt. It surprised me just how packed the audience was, and it seemed like everyone was having a lot of fun. As a person with a theatre degree (and therefore very knowledgeable;) it was very cool. Will definitely be catching the full show next week and reviewing it.

This was so much more like real Star trek than that flop they had at the theater this year.

Shakespeare in the park is official dead and buried. As a trained (and jaded) actor I had way more fun watching this than ANY Shakespeare in the park in Portland over the the last 10 years. Star Trek is the next Shakespeare. Believe it you "Red Shirt."
