Warner, DiCaprio entering Twilight Zone

Warner, DiCaprio entering \<i\>Twilight Zone\<\/i\>

Everyone wants into the Twilight business, but in this case, there are no hunky vampires: The Twilight Zone, Rod Serling's iconic sci-fi anthology TV series, is set to be reborn again as a movie.

Variety reports that Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company have hired Rand Ravich (The Astronauth's Wife) to write a script based on the show. Ravich also created the acclaimed but canceled NBC series Life.

The original Twilight Zone series ran on CBS for five seasons starting in 1959. It was resurrected as a TV show in 1985-'89 (on CBS and then in syndication) and again in 2002 (on UPN). It was also made into a feature film in 1983, with directors such as Steven Spielberg and John Landis helming segments.

I love Twilight Zone, and watch the SyFy Marathons religiously. Favor episodes include "The Jeopardy Room", "Monsters are due on Maple Street", "A stop at Willowby" among many others whose names I can't remember. With the upcoming movie "The Box" based on a TZ story, I think the time is right for Hollyweird to showcase that wacky, weird "signpost up ahead" once again.

Not that they should remake "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" again since it was already done in the first TZ movie, but I wonder how it would play given a post 9-11 context.

One of my favorite episodes was about a woman stuck in an apartment with neighbors as the temperature keeps rising, and it turns out that the Earth is hurtling towards the sun, only she wakes up and finds that it was all a dream and the earth is actually moving away from the sun and everything is dark and freezing.

Any Twilight Zone movie venture is doomed to failure if the screenwriter begins from the premise of spooky story creation as opposed to understanding the man behind the story--Rod Serling. Whoever takes this project on should immediately forget about CGI, explosions and wacko jump-the-shark storylines and begin by learning everything that can be learned about Serling, what drove him, what pleased him and, ultimately, what destroyed him. Start there, then we'll talk...

Check out "Five Characters in Search of an Exit." You don't hear as much about it as some other episodes, but it's one of my faves.
