Willem Dafoe gets his ass to John Carter of Mars

Willem Dafoe gets his ass to \<i\>John Carter of Mars\<\/i\>

Willem Dafoe wore green armor as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man, and now he's going full green monty as an alien warlord in John Carter of Mars, WALL-E director Andrew Stanton's first live-action movie.

Dafoe will star alongside Wolverine co-stars Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins in the adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi fantasy series of books, Variety reported.

Here's what the trade paper said:

Dafoe will play the role of Tars Tarkas, a fierce green Martian warrior, who's unusual among his savage race for his ability to love. Tars develops an alliance with John Carter in the first film, which is based on A Princess of Mars.

He fights battles alongside Carter through the entire series of Edgar Rice Burroughs books, so he will be hanging around for sequels.

Kitsch, who appeared all too briefly in X-Men Origins: Wolverine as the cane-twirling Gambit, will play the title character in Mars, a damaged Civil War vet who finds himself mysteriously transported to the Red Planet.

Collins, who played Wolverine's ill-fated Kayla Silverfox, will play the Princess of Mars. Stanton wrote the script with Mark Andrews. John Carter of Mars is slated for release sometime in 2012.

Hmm, Gonna be interesting to see how they make him 8 feet tall with 4 arms...

Aw, man! I've been looking forward to this movie for forever, but I really dislike pretty-boy Kitsch. And of ALL the talented, beautiful actresses in the world, they had to go with dull, stiff Lynn Collins? Seriously disappointed!

At least Dafoe is a great choice, although I wonder how recognizable he'll be in the role. Hmm, maybe they had to go with cheaper actors like Kitsch and Collins in order to afford Dafoe.

Well, a whole lot can happen between now and 2012...

I'm still wondering how they will make him look like this;

Now I just hope the site masters don't delete my post.

Is anyone else concerned by the fact that Disney is making a movie where one of the big draws to adolescent boys is that Dejah Thoris runs around wearing only jewelry. I mean it's classic, the books, and Disney's going to take it sooo far from itself just to make it PG.

By beacher at 10:52 AM ON 07/16/09

Well, defoe is gonna have to be 15 feet tall (not 8) to play tars tarkas and collins ain't no dejah thoris, but when has that ever stopped someone from making a movie?

Disney can't be bothered with trivia matters like a script or talented actors, when they have important things like picking the right happy meal toys from China.

Have to agree with malohombre it's allll about the crap! merchandising baby!

Before you rush to judgement (oh wait, I forgot what site I was posting to for a second there) about this movie, remember that the director, did Wall-E, which I think is one of the best pure science fiction movies in years that actually managed to have an audience.

Speaking of ... I wish Moon had more attention paid to it, because I feel the director was really trying to do a proper science fiction film, as opposed to the regular fantasy-with-sci-fi-trappings that we usually get.

Splinter, I really wanted to see Moon, but it isn't playing anywhere near me, so I'll have to wait for the DVD. The trailer looked really interesting with some terrific music.

And to stay on topic, speaking of Willem Dafoe, he's in Streets of Fire (with Michael Pare, Diane Lane, and Rick Moranis), on cable right now, and I have no memory of him being the villain. He looks so disturbing! I can't believe the movie is twenty-five years old. Used to watch it often with my brother, and I loved Dan Hartman's "I Can Dream About You".

He also had a great short but memorable role in eXistenZ. But if you really want to see some freaky young Dafoe, check out To Live and Die in LA. If I had a time machine, I'd go back to 1985, kidnap him and have him play the Joker in some future Batman movie.

By AngryJonny at 3:56 PM ON 07/18/09

I know! Dafoe is a psychopath in To Live and Die in LA! Great movie, too. A young, hotshot William Peterson (CSI) stars, but meets a shocking, brutal end.

I've been dreaming of this for years! Thought it would never happen. Now I read the comments and find out it's a friggin' Disney production. Just shoot me, O.K.? There is only one producer/director who should be allowed anywhere near A Princess of Mars, and that is Peter Jackson.
