The film version of Audrey Niffenegger's best-seller The Time Traveler's Wife opened OK—in third place, after District 9 and G.I. Joe—which I guess was good enough to persuade ABC to team up with Friends creator Marta Kauffman and Warner Brothers Television to adapt it as a weekly TV series, TheWrap.com reports.
ABC's interest in the adaptation substantially pre-dates the movie, however. The network has been talking to Kauffman "for years" about bringing the project to the small screen, industry insiders said.Kauffman will write and executive produce.
ABC executives believe the complex plot of the original novel will work well in series form, since Kauffman will be able to explore the romantic relationship at the core of the story over the course of several seasons.
Individual episodes will likely feature self-contained storylines as well.
ABC has given Warner TV a pilot commitment for The Time Traveler's Wife, the site reported.

Wasn't this a show on NBC last year called "Journeyman" already? (Which I loved and miss).
By mread at 2:02 PM ON 08/18/09
wouldn't that just be the same as Journeyman?
By wvwolfie at 2:26 PM ON 08/18/09
Ditto - Journeyman Loved it too.
By DryedMangoez at 2:33 PM ON 08/18/09
Haha, I saw the headline and immeadiately thought Journeyman as well. Except this would just be a more romantic/drama type thing instead of Journeyman's sci-fi/mythology focus with family/romance mixed in.
I miss Journeyman. Another series NBC gave up on just as it was getting good.
By Darkboar at 2:38 PM ON 08/18/09
Agreed. Was looking forward to several seasons of that one

Journeyman! LOL!

New formula: Take one awful novel, turn it into a mediocre film (from what I've heard as I have not seen it), and then churn out the TV series. Ugh, spare us.
By Bedlam at 3:53 PM ON 08/18/09
I agree with everyone above who mentioned Journeyman. Even if this gets produced, the way ABC does things, they'll only be on for 6 maybe 12 episodes before its cancelled.
By TLEE at 4:08 PM ON 08/18/09
I gave Journeyman a try and wound up enjoying that show very much.
If that show couldn't hold an audience and the movie is barely hanging in there in the theaters, what makes'em think a TV version will work.
Bring back Journeyman instead.
By SciFiGirl at 4:26 PM ON 08/18/09
I agree, just bring back Journeyman because that was really building to something, had a great cast of characters and tight writing each episode.
Why do networks keep canceling good shows only to spend tons of money redoing them over and over again? Then wonder why no one tunes into the knockoffs.
By BlakesTiger at 5:04 PM ON 08/18/09
I haven't read the book, but the movie was good as a stand-alone, though not quite my style. However, one of its laws of physics, which makes it vastly different from Journeyman (a TV show I really enjoyed) is that nothing you do can alter events, past or future.
So, this TV series would be about a couple who experience their lives together disjointed in time rather than having a time-hopping hero. Or they ignore that particular rule in the movie and make it a Journeyman clone.

bring back Quantum Leap!!!!!

Journeyman.... I seen like the first episode and missed the rest.... not really much to form an opinion on the show, but it did look interesting. But hey while we are on the subject if any show needs to come back it's My Own Worst Enemy. That was like one of the most entertaining shows on tv to date. And the way they just cut it off was wrong. Not only did they not give the show a real chance they cut it off in mid season
Right after a cliffhanger... That's just wrong in every way.

'ABC executives believe the complex plot of the original novel will work well in series form, since Kauffman will be able to explore the romantic relationship at the core of the story over the course of several seasons.'
I peed myself a bit when I read this; the likelihood of this show lasting a THIRD OF ONE SEASON is pretty much nil, let alone the 'course of several seasons.'

I would love to see a Quantum Leap remake. Make it so Hollywood!
As for this, I'm torn. I love ABC, love Lost, loved Alias, loved Invasion etc, so I have a lot of faith in them (all networks cancel shows so I don't hold it against any of them), but after the director of the movie talked so much crap about it not being scifi and trying to distance it from anything genre related, it just makes the whole premise sound kinda lame. I'll give it a chance, but I don't expect much from it.

Already done (and probably done better) as Quantum Leap and Journeyman. Make this another echo for bringing back Journeyman.
By J at 3:01 AM ON 08/19/09
I was just going to say "Journeyman" - but I see others have beaten me to it.
I'm just re-watching Journeyman and it was excellent. It was the biggest casualty of the writers strike. I'm sure if it had gone full season, it would have been recommissioned. It was a tragedy that it was cancelled. Kevin McKidd was excellent in it (sob!).
By TauCetiPrime at 8:09 AM ON 08/19/09
I haven't seen the movie and didn't get a chance to get into Journeyman. The plots for both remind me a lot of "Slaughterhouse Five"
By MaryAnnMc254 at 9:58 AM ON 08/19/09
I see one HUGE difference between Journeyman and Time Traveler's Wife that would likely make the tone of the two shows totally different.
In Journeyman, he has to cover from his wife why he is missing. It creates tension between them. The disappearances are brief.
In Time Traveler's Wife, she knows what he is, loves him anyway, and his disappearances add poignancy to their love story.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
By stefan231 at 10:39 AM ON 08/19/09
didn't the directer change the movie to make it not a SciFi movie but a epic love story? Why is this on scifiwire now? They even changed the ending in the movie to make it female friendly because the books ending was to sad.
By J at 11:38 AM ON 08/19/09
MaryAnn: Actually, the time traveller in Journeyman told his wife what was happenin in the first episode.
I'm sure you're right, though, that the tone would be very different.
By Al at 7:15 PM ON 08/19/09
I haven't gotten a chance to see the movie, but yes, Journeyman had the same premise, although they approached it in a different way. The "Travellers" were many in past years and were becoming more and more rare as time went on.
Also, it was an obvious remake of Quantum Leap, requiring him to help someone in the past before he could return to the present for longer periods of time.
Loved both shows. Hope if they do a series of "Wife" that is has the same quality as the Journeyman and Humanity of Leap.

Journeyman was a great show but no one watched it so why would they watch this?
By DaveH at 4:57 AM ON 08/20/09
Time Traveler's Wife TV Show hmmmm, so lets call it the Katie Vasser show :)
Really wish Journeyman had been released on DVD, even trash like Bionic Woman and Flash Gordon got DVD releases.

The book doesn't deal with the scifi elements as much as maybe a typical science fiction book would. It focuses much more on the two main characters (something which the movie couldn't handle either way around). Neither Henry or Clare are serious scientists who understand the disease, they just go through it like normal people and know how it affects them.
It could work as a series, but it would have have a real plan about where it would go and be handled much better than the film did in terms of Clare and her development through it. No random bouts of screaming about their relationship that don't even occur in the book, maybe.
The only problem with this is that it's probably not the kind of show to attract an audience after a couple of episodes which networks demand and it's something that really should know *when* it's going to end (probably within a couple of seasons, if not two).
I think it would work much better as a mini series to explore the book and then perhaps if they want to go off in a different direction after that, expand into a series and study other characters that could be written with their own journeys.

Bring back Journey man!
By Cldstrife at 2:48 AM ON 08/31/09
Journeyman was a great show. I really hate how the networks don't even give shows that much of a shot..They put something on for like maybe 2 weeks and if it doesn't pull in numbers they toss around the line up until they just pull it. Sucks.....I really would like to see more episodes. Alot of the net would agree.
