The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist filmmaker Frank Darabont will adapt Robert Kirkman's and Tony Moore's zombie apocalypse comic book The Walking Dead as a series for cable TV outlet AMC, Variety reports.
The comic book, known for its high mortality rate among principal and secondary characters and its focus on the psychological states of its protagonists, concerns small-town cop Rick Grimes' attempt to lead and protect a small band of survivors in a world overrun with zombies.
Darabont will be teaming up on the project with producer Gale Anne Hurd, who is no stranger to comic book adaptations, with Virus and two incarnations each of the Punisher and the Hulk under her belt. Hurd is also currently Top Cow's comic book heroine The Magdalena to the screen.

I haven't read the books, but I've been waiting what feels like most of my life for a zombie apocalypse TV series, and I love AMC's stuff recently, so I'm happy.
Very happy.

This is easily one of the best comic series out right now. That being said... AMC? Not HBO or Showtime where you can show the actual horror elements? Honest psychological reactions to these graphic horrors is one of the book's biggest draws. The whole thing is a sort of thought experiment on how real, (mostly) normal people would be effected by all this madness. I think having it on AMC might really hurt the series' ability to stay true to the comic in this respect. That being said, I am really excited about this, as it's an absolutely amazing book. The omnibus is a pretty good value too for anybody looking to catch up. I recommend it to all my customers looking for zombie/supernatural/vampire/horror books.
I really wish my boss would allow me to add it to the "If you liked Twilight, you'll love these books" display, but alas...

I love this comic series. Meeting Kirkman at Comic Con this year was pure gold. That said, not sure if Im totally excited about this being done for TV only because it will have a planned ending and Kirkman stated at his panel that he plans on Walking Dead to go on for many more years. Will the TV show condense it and tack on an ending and maybe spoil it for us comic book fans?

That's good to hear. I'm glad this is becoming a series instead of a film. Like many of the comics turned to films this type of story works best when you have many hours to tell it.
AMC will do a fine job. They'll have to cut back on the language and some of the more graphic scenes but with as much as they are able to push these days on cable TV it shouldn't really hurt the overall work.
The only thing that I'm worried about is that this will probably not go beyond the first season. Something like this will be a very though sell. Hopefully the writters and producers will keep this in mind and write the first season as a standalone with possible room to continue.

I just hope they don't cop out like Heros did. Hereos was SUPPOSE to have serious turn over of good guys/bad guys and well...now it's like a marvel comic. No one dies. My friends and I agree that the turn over rate in Walking Dead was TOO high - it's one of the reasons I dropped it from my subscription list. But bringing it to near zero because people 'like' the characters would also be a mistake. Let's hope.
