Disney buys Marvel for $4 billion

Disney buys Marvel for $4 billion
Marvel's Iron Man grossed more than $300 million at the box office in 2008

The Disney Company is buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in cash and stocks, according to an AP report published in USA Today.

In a statement made to the New York Times, Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter said that "Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses." And even though Perlmutter will continue to oversee Marvel properties after the buyout, just how Disney will be the "perfect home" for characters like the Punisher and Kick-Ass remains to be seen.

With this deal, Disney will have ownership of Marvel's library of more than 5,000 characters, including such icons as the Fantastic Four, the Hulk and such huge box-office powerhouses as the X-Men, Wolverine, Iron Man and Spider-Man.

Robert Iger of Disney also told the Times, "We believe that adding Marvel to Disney's unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation."

As of this writing, Marvel shareholders still need to approve the purchase.

OMG! This means a new onslaught of Comic Based movies that will be very boring. Even though under the Disney umbrella, some of these characters do not lend themselves to movie making, and the rest have already been done, and that just means remakes sending us to viewing purgatory. - KH

By saturn at 11:20 AM ON 08/31/09

interesting don't know what to say

Looking forward to seeing what comes of this

By Cranky Bear at 11:23 AM ON 08/31/09

So what does this mean for Universal Studios, who has a good portion of their theme parks based on these characters? Do they need to start ripping down or at least renaming the roller coasters? Will we be forced to ride the Flinging Booger instead of the Hulk coaster?

By Urielliam at 11:23 AM ON 08/31/09

Wait of it ppl, Mickey will have adamantium claws and Ironman will dye his armor pink and blue.

By Kazoo at 11:29 AM ON 08/31/09

Sounds like this might be a way to take digital comics into an animated direction.

By stavenborn at 11:34 AM ON 08/31/09

this is the first sign of the apocalypse.

By Virgil's Diner at 11:34 AM ON 08/31/09

Not sure I see an upside to this one. I liked that Marvel had become its own entity, making its own movies in-house. Consolidating media this way generally means a furthering watering down of creativity and originality. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm jumping ship if Goofy joins the Avengers.

By elvenangel at 11:39 AM ON 08/31/09

I'm not sure if I should take this as the sign of the apocalypse or not. I suppose if they start Disneyfying the stories and the comics and the movies......god I'd hope that'd be part of the deal that Disney can't restructure the comics to be kiddie.

By tuck4vols2004 at 11:53 AM ON 08/31/09

The business sites say that Disney plans to leave existing deals in place for the immediated future. When Universal Studios deal with Marvel Entertainment is up, you will probably see those characters over at Disney/MGM park

By Zaphod at 12:02 PM ON 08/31/09

Get ready for the Disney pussification of all your favorite superheroes.

By photoguy_ryan at 12:02 PM ON 08/31/09

I see it now, in my crystal ball...

Stark calls in the 7 dwarves when he needs something built.

Thor gains big round on his helmet.

Cap loses his shield, but gains a magic wand.

No more Stan "the man" appearances, but mickey is everywhere.

By Darth_Andrea at 12:13 PM ON 08/31/09

This won't end well, Look at what Disney did to Power Rangers when they bought that. They Dumbed it down to a point of being unwatchable by anyone but 4 year old's and Hamsters.

By Otacon at 12:23 PM ON 08/31/09

WTH? from today the marvel characters are dead. Today i'ts the worst day of the comic.

By 13th Cylon at 12:24 PM ON 08/31/09

Think of the Mash-Up Possibilities here people!

Beauty and the Beast Vs. Jean Gray and the Beast

Iron Man Vs. That big hat thing from Meet the Robinsons

The Scarlet Witch Vs. The Sorcerers Apprentice

Namore Vs The Little Mermaid

Huey, Dewy, and Louie take on Mr. Sinister

I mean the possibilities here are endless.

By Blue247 at 12:28 PM ON 08/31/09

So does this mean Dr. Strange is now the Sorcerer's Apprentice?

By Bob the Monkey at 12:30 PM ON 08/31/09

What the heck is wrong with you people? Why is it automatically doom and gloom? Why can't people try and be positive? I honestly think this might be a good thing. I don't think they'll go in and make changes to the characters or even Marvel as a company. I think people freaking worry too much. Relax, wait and see what happens.

By Andrew at 12:33 PM ON 08/31/09

While I am not a really big comic book fan, I do enjoy watching super hero shows. I think that this will be the death of Marvel. Diseny is a great talent when it comes to making movies and cartoons, but Marvel is completely different than anything Diseny does. I can't wait to see The Hulk singing to a bunch of robins in a tree. Should be interesting to hear Wolverine use words like "gosh" and "golly."

All I can say is SHAREHOLDERS DO NOT APPROVE THIS!!!!

By Cykotron at 12:41 PM ON 08/31/09

What you have to remember is that Disney is a HUGE corporation that covers a lot more than just the iconic Disney brand. Haven't kept up with the particulars, so things may have changed, but Touchstone pictures used to be where Disney sent it's "more mature" movies, and they once (still?) owned the ABC network. I still have my qualms about this, but it may not be as bad as some are predicting...

By a different tim at 1:08 PM ON 08/31/09

my beloved Spiderman.... a disney character..... NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By bookwy12m at 1:21 PM ON 08/31/09

I don't care as long as the "Disney" brand name stays out of the comics. I will stop my subscriptions if it starts saying DIsney Comics instead of Marvel.

Ditto with stupid crossovers of their respective characters.

By timebandit at 1:25 PM ON 08/31/09

i think your all missing the most obvious crossover howard the duck vs donald duck .

i dont know how this is going to pan out. gut instinct tells me that disney will bring out a range of cheaper comic books aimed at making children interested in the genre again . comics have become too much of a cult medium and really do need to attract the numbers of younger readers they had in the past . beyond that i dont think you ll see a lot of tinkering with the way marvel is run .well i hope not

By Wren at 1:35 PM ON 08/31/09

I didn't even realize Marvel was for sale. I would have thought they made enough money from Ironman, etc. to slap Disney's hands away when they came reaching around.

By SomeCoolName at 1:55 PM ON 08/31/09

Lets just hope the shareholders turn this offer down. I doubt they will. Maybe if we all pray and ask GOD to stop this from happening. Thor just might come down and hit someone with his Hammer. Mark my words. This will ruin Marvel movies from this point forward. Think DC and Warner bros

By MBrown at 2:08 PM ON 08/31/09

Does this mean that Marvel will (again) publish Disney comics rather then Boom Studios! (who recently also picked up the classic stuff that Gemstone was doing so well, just not financially...).

By divephotog at 2:09 PM ON 08/31/09

Some ask why this is seen as doom, instead of positive...
Let's see, for it to be positive, the Disney people would have to invest into the system, yet leave it's structure in place, and not make any demands on the Marvel system in any way, not for output, marketing, or anything. Oh, has anyone ever seen that happen in a corporate takeover or buyout?
No the gloom starts with the Disney people asking for more $$ from the Marvel system. They also get their own creative people into the Marvel mix to control the system even more, changing the look, reducing the customer satisfaction, and there starts the slide...
Buyups mean only one thing in the market today = the canibalization of the bought, or the slow demise of it.
Time will tell, but history says it is the end of Marvel as it has been known. - KH

By jamartinjr at 2:26 PM ON 08/31/09

Three words: Ultimate Mickey Mouse

Turns out that Steamboat Mickey was actually Steampunk Mickey.

By Valeyard at 2:42 PM ON 08/31/09

Please just let them fire Joe Quesada. That's all I ask. And reunite Peter and Mary Jane as the couple they were always meant to be!

By Ladystarr at 3:05 PM ON 08/31/09

This may not be bad. If Disney does well in managing Marvel like Miramax films, the more adult based movies can resume as in the last Punisher Movie, hard core violence. Then Iron Man has the appeal of Disney. If done well this can be a good partnership and funding for Marvel. Keeping an open mind that creativity will still flow. Plus Marvel animation has already been showing on the Disney stations. And with Hasboro jumping into the arena now, Marvel may need the bigger guns to play well.

Plus the business side of me says a 200% profit on Marvel Stocks and the deal will give me cash and add to my Disney Stock. On that front I did well.

By shakespeareprof at 3:48 PM ON 08/31/09

Considering how badly disney screwed up their deal with the Muppets, i think we should all be very afraid.

By #1 Web Head at 3:56 PM ON 08/31/09

Just as long as they (Disney) keeps themselves at arms length. The second they even think of doing anything to change my beloved Marvel characters then we'll have a problem!

By apropos at 4:15 PM ON 08/31/09

NNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! the end is near, the end is near. well Marvel Comics is finally dead, its a very sad day for comic book kind.

By Minotaur at 5:42 PM ON 08/31/09

One ray of sunshine..... PIXAR

By Muldfeld at 6:04 PM ON 08/31/09

This is terrible. Disney is a pro-Bush right wing organization. I'm not saying Marvel is a saint, but Disney is going to ensure Marvel stuff doesn't upset nutcase rightwingers. Say good-bye to free speech among Marvel writers if it might threaten profits.

By Draginbeard at 6:08 PM ON 08/31/09

Well, if Disney wants to make this business deal profitable, they will have to respect the creative teams and not interfere with what works. Of course all I can think about is that South Park episode with Mickey and the (hoping they go away soon) Jonas Brothers...

By hermy at 9:15 PM ON 08/31/09

before fanboys go crazy with this.you have to remember that just a few years ago marvel almost went bankrupt.they even wrote a book about.called comic wars by dan raviv.just before the first spiderman movie came out marvel was almost liquidated.so at least disney is a stable company.don't forget D.C is owned by warner bros.so this is nothing new.so stop crapping your pants guys.things will be ok

By Richard at 9:27 PM ON 08/31/09

The same doom & gloom was put out when Disney merged with Pixar. Instead Pixar actually took over parts of Disney and creativity flourished.

Disney is an international power that knows how to handle and protect their characters. They have multi media platforms that can be used to promote their characters. And believe me, Disney knows synergy.

I think it is a positive thing. Although my jaw dropped when I saw it.

By c from illinios at 9:31 PM ON 08/31/09

timebandit, it will turn out that Howard the Duck will be the father of Hewie, Louie, and Dewie.

By Kalcean at 10:19 PM ON 08/31/09

The shareholders need to stop this immediately. If htey do not it will only go to share they care nothing for the fans and franchises that brought them to this point ot begin with. It would be foolish greed to hand the reigns over and let Disney call the shots. If this happens it will be the true Dark Reign in Marvel. hell, i'd trust norman osborne to control it more than disney. This may very well lead to many longtime fans leaving marvel altogether, and i would not be bale to blame them. Now someone hire Deadpool to take out Eisner while there's still a chance

By JhnsKv4@aol.com at 11:23 PM ON 08/31/09

We are Disney. You will be assisilated.Your technology and resources will service us.Resisitance is futile.

By captainwhat at 12:42 AM ON 09/01/09

Cool, but let Marvel have their playground. For I swear, there shall be a reckoning if Zach Effron appears in a Marvel movie. I will burn the heavens themselves with my fury.

Although, has anyone considered how awesome it might be for the Marvel universe to work it's way into an upcoming Kingdom Hearts game?
Plus I can't wait to see the rascally adventures of the new monthly series Wolverine / Scrooge McDuck: Weapon Quack

By Gandalf The Grey at 12:51 AM ON 09/01/09

I'm not crazy about the a major corporation gobbling up another media outlet. Disney owns 10 television stations, 50 radio stations, ESPN, A&E, the History Channel, Discover magazine, Hyperion publishing, Touchstone Pictures, and Miramax Film Corp. http://www.commoncause.org/site/pp.asp?c=dkLNK1MQIwG&b=2127045

On the other hand at least maybe they'll yank back the rights for the X-Men from 20th Century Faux. I'll say it again X-Men III was a disaster the X-Men franchise has yet to recover from!

By familyman99 at 5:54 AM ON 09/01/09

Of two minds here. As a fan of sci-fi and comics-based movies in general, I'm a little uneasy about where this will end up. Then again, as one of the apparent minority who has always favored DC over Marvel, I can't help thinking, "Better to have this happen to Spider-Man than Batman."

Either way, you just know that Howard the Duck is going to get remade now. Hey, they can only do better than the original, right?

By Aberzombie at 7:26 AM ON 09/01/09

Relax fanboys! Why would Disney want to kiddie-fy, or in any other way screw up, Marvel. As an etertainment company first and foremost (NOT a loony right-wing conspiracy), there main coal is to expand their customer base and the number of target audiences they can hit. I see this as a good thing. Disney can use its resources to help push Marvel to greater heights, especially on the movie/animation fronts. Make mine Darvel!

Leaked from Disney Studios…

Joint Disney-Marvel Production Slate:

I can’t wait to see these!

My Friend The Hulk – three children stumble upon a counterfiet ring in their very own street. They befriend the Hulk who helps them to upset the ring’s operations.

Spider-man and Mickey – when Mickey Mouse’s home is threatened by a new building development Spider-man arrives to save the day.

X-Men Army – when a mad mutant threatens to destroy New York the X-Men assemble an army of mutants and talking animals to help save the day

Honey, I Shrunk Iron Man – yes, once again that crazy scientist shrinks someone – this time it’s Iron Man. A crime wave erupts as the pint-size hero finds himself unable to foil the criminals.

Daredevil Duck – when Daredevil goes missing it’s up to Donald Duck to save the day as Daredevil Duck.

Fantastic Four Plus One – yes, the FF once again face Dr. Doom who meets his match when they call upon Dennis The Menace for assistance.

Before y'all up and explode, go find a current AP story. The *plans* are to leave all current deals as they stand, and likely continue, so long as they are profitable. This ought to come together like with Pixar - which means we may only have to deal with an excess of pointless merchandising and un-needed sequels.

So business as usual.

Me, I think this is just another step towards taking over Orlando.

By joetherat at 9:13 AM ON 09/01/09

Oh, and familyman: It did happen to DC. In 1969. With Time-Warner.

By Joe Mama at 10:12 AM ON 09/01/09

Who's the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. that's now part of Disney? M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E...

By HeathMarin at 10:31 AM ON 09/01/09

The first thing is Marvel is very successful, and so is Disney. What would make Disney spend this kind of money on something they need to "fix"? Nothing, Marvel movies will still be Marvel movies. I am also sure that Universal will still be able to keep their licensing deals because Disney will want the MONEY. Doom and gloom be set aside and realize the movies and comics will still be what you like or love to complain about anyway. And if Disney can bring a younger market back to reading comics then that is a good thing also because it keeps the product coming in the future.

By Sentinus at 12:38 PM ON 09/01/09

Regardless of the "why" for this deal, I will have to cease purchasing any and all Marvel comics and related merchandise as soon as it is final. I will also have to seriously consider boycotting any movies released once this union occurs.
I have no personal affection for Disney or its political agenda. Currently, I do not contribute financially to Disney and will not until they stop attempting to force their political views on children via their programing, movies, books, theme parks, etc.
I am voting with my dollars as anyone seriously opposed to Marvel being consumed by Disney would do to ensure that our voice is heard.
If even 10% of Marvel's current purchasing fan base were to do this it would send a very clear message to Marvel and Disney.

By Aberzombie at 2:28 PM ON 09/01/09

@Sentinus - Just curious, what is Disney's political agenda? Hannah Montana for President?

By Boomer at 4:12 PM ON 09/01/09

this wont be soo bad. maybe hints here and there, and those huge disney stamps, but i think thats the extent of it.

the thing that scares me is the pull Disney has on american, and international minds.
NWO anyone?
haha,
really though?

By Pablo Escobar at 1:01 PM ON 09/03/09

I hope Disney doesn't mess around too much with Marvel, like in this funny parody of the situation.
