Esai Morales began his roundtable interview at Comic-Con for the upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel series, Caprica, by doing an imitation of Edward James Olmos for us. Not only was it hysterical, but it was strangely appropriate. In Caprica, Morales plays the father of Olmos' Battlestar character, Adm. Adama.
"I don't have the same gravitas as he does," Morales growled last month in San Diego. "He's quite a character to play on. I got half the genes. I gave him half of his gravelly voice. You should hear his mother, though. Oy. The mornings? Oh, ho." Between jokes, he gave us a bit of info about his character.
Caprica follows two rival families and their patriarchs—Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) and Joseph Adama (Morales)—as they compete and thrive in the vibrant realm of the 12 Colonies, a society recognizably close to our own.
Interestingly, Morales told us he wasn't originally a Battlestar fan. "I had no idea," he admitted. "It thought it was ... Lorne Green [who starred in the original series]. Do I get a cape? Actually, I have some friends who asked if I get to wear one of those cool spacesuits. ... I've seen a couple of episodes here and there. ... They said, 'Listen, we'd almost prefer you not see that, because we don't want every other thing to be a nod and a wink to the show.'" He added that the writers are taking care of those things so they wouldn't be on his shoulders.
Asked whether he felt pressure to live up to a character that is already known to fans, he said, "Absolutely. We know he was a lawyer. We know that he was a big part of his son's makeup, of what forged his character, and it's good to hear that, now that the show is being made, people are starting to see glimpses of that strength. Again, my job is not limited to leading up to Mr. Olmos' portrayal of William Adama, but you will see a lot of what makes him up."
Morales also talked about making the character his own and not peppering it with Olmos/Adama traits. "It shouldn't be about that, because that's one joke that would get old quick," Morales said. "You know?" Though he understandably didn't give any details, Morales gave us a peek into where his character is going. "I would love to tell you, but ... he is going to go through a real neoclassic Greek tragedy arc."
Caprica also stars Paula Malcomson (Amanda Graystone), Polly Walker (Sister Clarice Willow), Magda Apanowicz (Lacy) and Alessandra Torresani (Zoe Graystone). The series is from Universal Cable Productions and is executive-produced by Ronald D. Moore, David Eick and Jane Espenson. Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights) directed the pilot. Caprica kicks off with a two-hour premiere on Jan. 22, 2010, at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will air Fridays at 10 p.m.

The one thing that always kinda bothered me about BSG and now, apperantly Caprica, is the use of smoking to denote coping with stressful situations.
And in this day and age where smoking is very non-PC, to show over and over again in the Stolz/Morales promo shot seems pretty lame..
I make no apologies about my feelings about this, and yes, I know I don't have to watch it.. I just hate to think of a show with such good potential having to resort to a cliche to denote emotion..

Re: smoking - from what I've seen the world looks like a strange amalgam of 80s and 80s fashion and design with some futuristic stuff through it, so it could be part of trying to evoke that. Besides, BSG has never tried to comforting, it was always challenging and yet, oddly enough, quite often PC in the sense of portraying a society with true gender equality - which I rather think matters more than showing smoking.
I think what I'm trying to say is that it is not our world and it picks and chooses from values that may or may not be entrenched in our world, right?

Oops, 50s and 80s, i mean.

I hate smoking; I got an eye infection or something because I was hanging around this guy who kept smoking when we'd talk. The medical bill for getting help solving it cost my dad thousands of dollars to pay because I was just visiting Austria and didn't have a right to the coverage there.
Anyway, I also hate people getting drunk, but BSG has this, too. I don't think it's necessarily endorsing it, but I thought people did smoke in desperation -- just like when they drink. Maybe part of it has to do with Moore being a social smoker, too, though.
Regardless, I can't wait for this show, provided it has the same level of political insight and we don't get any Buffy-style melodrama from certain writers.
Still don't have a character of the quality of Baltar, though.

If you want to see Star Trek and be a part of a politically correct universe, whip out the DVD's and indulge yourself. Leave the BSG universe alone.

So what is PC, espoused by a vast majority of fascists and their sheep, should be stricken from entertainment and public display? Way to send our society backwards.

If we can't have smoking and drinking, lets not have death, adlut relationships, or terrorism. Heck lets just watch yo gabba gabba instead!

Smoking and drinking has been going on for more than a thousand years before today and is going to continue for thousands of years from here on. You can complain, whine, cry, and moan about people doing it everyday day for the rest of your lives, the government can pass all the laws and restrictions they can possibly think of against it, and you can still guarantee millions of people are still going to do it no matter what anyone says.
Bottom line everyone has free will if they want to do it leave them alone and let them do it, because complaining does nothing , but annoy others. And if you want to complain cause they are polluting your air well honestly noone says you have to sit next to them.
And drinking well some people shouldn't drink because they get violent or they decide to take a roadtrip. But as for others some people just like to drink some people it just relaxes them and all these religious people who look down upon them are just gonna have to get over it.
And this stuff has been going on in movies way before alot of you people were ever born. You can't live in society being against everything if you do noone is going to like you.

I think the issue is that the civilizations of Battlestar (and Caprica) are supposed to be more advanced than our own present day civilization (they have spaceships that travel faster than light and can create robots that are sentient). You would expect such an evolved civilization would realise the damage that smoking causes, especially since we've already gotten to that stage ourselves. Perhaps the cigarettes in the Galactica universe are herbal or something and dont pose the same health risks, but if this is the case I think the show needs to say so. Smoking in a show like Mad Men is appropriate because its set in a society that was less informed. Galactica and Caprica dont have that excuse.

I swear, some of you people need to step back, take a breath, and calm down. Interesting article about Esai Morales's take on on how his character fits in the over-all make-up of the future Admiral and what are some of you taking offense to? Smoking? Please...
Honestly, (and borrowing from RDM when he was talking about something else) if you can sit down and watch BSG or what we've seen of Caprica and the thing you walk away with is, "That sure was alot of smoking!"; you missed show. That simple.
Never ceases to amaze me how we Americans have such weird values nowadays. TV show has ppl getting graphically murdered-thats ok its just a show. Another has graphic love-scenes that are bare threads away from being porn-its part of the plot. But god forbid someone light up a smoke within a 25 mile radius of a camera. Then its like Hitler and Stalin both rose from the grave and have decided to be little-league coaches on your block.....
Taking my own advice now and stepping back. But seriously guys, smoking is bad-we get it. Now please, would you shut the hell up about it?

smoking has happened before and it will happen again :)

As I have said before (many times) and will now say again: BSG is not for liberal fascists.
BSG is for rational commonsensical people who live in the real word and have a true understanding of human nature.
The odd thing is - even though they spew their effete whiny complaints about the show ad infinitum - I am astounded by how many leftwing nuts 'religiously' watched BSG.
