James Marsters to play a terrorist in Syfy's Caprica

James Marsters to play a terrorist in Syfy\'s \<i\>Caprica\<\/i\>
James Marsters recently played astronaut Buzz Aldrin in the History Channel's Moonshot.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer writing alumna Jane Espenson has enlisted her former Buffy cast member James Marsters to join the cast of Syfy's upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel series Caprica, Entertainment Weekly reported.

EW's Michael Ausiello reported:

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Buffy all-star James Marsters is joining the Battlestar Galactica prequel for a sizeable arc.

Marsters will play a dangerous terrorist leader by the name of Barnabus Greeley in a minimum of three episodes. Driven by desires both moralistic and carnal, Barnabus is as lethal as he is unpredictable.

Marsters, as we know, played Spike the vampire in Buffy and its spinoff series, Angel, and has appeared in lots of sci-fi and genre TV shows and movies in the years since.

Marsters is only the latest high-profile actor to join the series; earlier, we heard that funnyman Patton Oswalt had also signed on.

Espenson is executive producer and show runner on Caprica.

Caprica will kick off with a two-hour premiere on Jan. 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will air Fridays at 10 p.m.

This show and Battlestar lore in general just got about 100x cooler.

By Melora at 6:14 PM ON 08/18/09

Loved him in Buffy and Angel, but his cred went right down when he did Torchcrud. Marsters has talent, but I think Caprica needs to avoid genre cliches (including the hiring of genre stars) as much as possible if it wants to be more than just another sci-fi show.

By Brady1541 at 6:58 PM ON 08/18/09

Gotta love when someone insults Torchwood and says someone's credibility was lowered because of it.

You just plainly stated you have no credibility. lol. You may have not liked Torchwood, but you're in the minority, as far as genre fans go. It's one of, if not the, best sci-fi show currently on television.

By Kryche at 7:25 PM ON 08/18/09

I wouldn't go that far. Torchwood Children of Earth was great, but the first 2 seasons were absolutely dull.

But it's not really currently even on the air. Has BBC even announced season 4 yet?

Also, when did Patton Oswald become high profile?

By Muldfeld at 8:09 PM ON 08/18/09

Very excited to have an actor as good as Marsters on Caprica (and for the poor guy to finally get a decent role). However, couldn't you spare us the spoiler of what kind of character he'd play? I'd like to be surprised, please.

By InfiniteMonkey at 11:31 PM ON 08/18/09

Way Cool!

By Muldfeld at 11:32 PM ON 08/18/09

By the way, Melora, I totally agree with you, but I think Marsters is such a talented actor that he has the range to do something different; as decent as Lucy Lawless was, I think he'll be much better.

He was great doing a guest spot on Millennium Season 3. I think this is finally the show that will allow us and the rest of the world to see just how great he is! He must be very excited because he turned down "Dresden Files" because he didn't want to do any work in Canada, which is where he'll have to film this.

By Horrid at 2:52 AM ON 08/19/09

OH YEAH!!! Marsters can do evil as good as anyone. I hope he uses an English acsent & has a lineage to Baltar ...

By J at 7:43 AM ON 08/19/09

The above comment about Torchwood is a little unfair. You can't criticise an actor for taking a job. The man has to earn a living. I thought he was surprisingly good as Buzz Aldrin.

By V at 8:29 AM ON 08/19/09

...Remind me again why they keep hiring Jane Espenson? Her episodes on BSG were awful.

By cooljacque at 10:42 AM ON 08/19/09

James turned down Dresden Files because it would mean a long stay apart from his niece who he is raising. And also he would not be able to spend as much time with his son. His kids come first with James. He did Brainiac in Smallville in Canada. He will work far from home, now that his kids are older, as long as it is not for a long period of time. I will watch anything James does. He is the best, as far as I am concerned.

"Torchwood Children of Earth was great, but the first 2 seasons were absolutely dull."

The first season was dull. The second was not.

By AngryJonny at 2:43 PM ON 08/19/09

Is James Marsters immortal? He's 47, but doesn't look it.

And I love Torchwood, all of it.

By Velodrome at 3:16 PM ON 08/19/09

Torchwood is CRAP and Marsters was slumming in it. I do agree he needs to break away from sci-fi/fantasy genre roles but I'm quite looking forward to him in Caprica.

By Muldfeld at 3:34 PM ON 08/19/09

Thanks for the clarification, coojacque; I hope he doesn't become difficult to have come up to Canada for filming; it was very odd the way they had to cut out Lucy Lawless' character because she was very restricted in her availability. Still, it'll be great to have him.

Horrid, I think it's a mistake to think he'll play an evil character simply because he'll be a terrorist. After all, the show will be about moral ambiguity, which is most often the case in real life -- just as BSG did. After all, just as American Revolutionaries, the French Resistance, and Hamas aren't "evil", neither were the cylons or Duck and the other humans who suicide bombed themselves on New Caprica; they were complicated, and so will be Marsters' character. That's why I think it's so important that he do this; on Millennium, he played a morally ambiguous character, too.

Similarly, Baltar isn't evil; he's not a perfectly good guy, but he has his good qualities, too. I think he's a better man than many in the mainstream media, too.

James Marsters always brings an irreverent tone to his acting and will be a definite bright spot in this series.

Muldfeld, please stop politicalizing this venue. Equating terrorists with revolutionaries is simply spouting revisionist history to make real modern terrorists seem to be sympathetic characters. And Hamas definitely does consist of a majority of terrorists - who by definition do evil acts to inspire terror.

By Muldfeld at 5:05 PM ON 08/19/09

billw, how am I wrong? American revolutionaries violated the norms of warfare by firing directly at British soldiers, hiding in trees, engaging in hit-and-run attacks, and hiding among civilians in regular clothes. They also spread propaganda about British-allied natives raping white women to scare people into supporting their cause. What about all the British soldiers who were forced to join and then died in that war?

The fact is that it is you who are trying to redefine things. If you break down the acts of supposedly civilized war -- even as practiced today -- they are far harsher than anything Hamas has done. What about what Blackwater soldiers (a private army funded by the US taxpayer) have been allowed to do in Iraq in killing innocent civilians on drunken binges? What about massacres like Haditha carried out by the US army. What about everything the Israeli army has done in the 40 years before Hamas' inception and since to murder people and engage in terrorism to frighten them out of their homes and land to take it over. Both US forces in Iraq and Israeli forces occupy people's homes and point guns at women and children shouting at them, terrorizing them when they haven't done anything.

How about the fact that just this last Sunday, an Israeli Jewish plumber, Ezra Nawi, was in court and will be sentenced for peacefully trying to stop Israeli bulldozers destroying Palestinian homes? How about the many peaceful activists who have tried to stop the occupation and been arrested?

Hamas has consistently shown more restraint than the Israeli army, which murdered over 1300 innocent Palestinians just last December and January, and continues to blockade humanitarian aid to the area.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Hamas is perfect, but neither are the US and Israeli armies. And the US has never had trouble supporting terrorist groups when they supported their causes -- like the Contras in their war against the democratically elected Sandinista socialist regime in Nicaragua.

Anyway, regarding Marsters, I hope he puts away his irreverence when it's not warranted; his performance has to be realistic, not some forced jokey villain like in Buffy.

great news - solid actor. His work on TW proved it . I willl admit Moonshot was right direction for him, too much sifi will limit him but hes gotta that kid thru college soon.

By Horrid at 11:23 PM ON 08/19/09

Hey 'Mudfield' ... you think too much ... Are you workin for the Man?

By Muldfeld at 2:13 AM ON 08/20/09

Horrid, I'm not sure what you mean? Is "the Man" the government?

Yeah, I guess I take stuff seriously, but I think that it's important that I say these things to bring out what the writers are trying to say about human nature; that's why I love these shows so much and it's why I want to get beyond the media propaganda and myths that have us heading in a collision course for the sake of ratings. If there is to be peace, it has to come from understanding the what motivates terrorism and I think Marsters will be fine for the role, which I expect will be complex and not some "24" caricature.

By Horrid at 10:38 PM ON 08/20/09

Mudfield ... WOW! You've got either a really big Brain or a big Chip on your Shoulder. In the words of Paul Weller 'That's Entertainment'

By AngryJonny at 11:08 PM ON 08/20/09

Muldfeld,

I hear what you're saying and I understand your frustration at the world. You're not alone.

Politics, history, the insanity that seems to be gripping the world... I'm all for good storytelling, especially through the prism of sci-fi, if it can help us make a little sense of it all.

By Muldfeld at 3:58 AM ON 08/21/09

Horrid, I'd like to pick "big brain". :)

Thanks very much, AngryJonny. Nice to hear.

And thanks also to Sci Fi for letting the comments stand.
