New SG-1, Atlantis films due, just not yet

New \<i\>SG-1, Atlantis\<\/i\> films due, just not yet

Stargate Universe executive producer Robert C. Cooper has written scripts for a new potential Stargate SG-1 movie and a Stargate Atlantis film, but said it might be a while before they get a green light.

"We're ready to go," Cooper said in an exclusive interview over the weekend in Pasadena, Calif., where he was promoting SGU at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "We're just waiting for the right opportunity," he said. "We want to be successful with it. The studio wants to be successful, and we really don't want to proceed with something in the wrong climate, which I think financially it is right now."

Two previous SG-1 straight-to-DVD movies, Continuum and The Ark of Truth, sold well, but the current economic downturn makes DVD premieres less lucrative than they were in the past.

"It's tough, because we were very successful with the first two SG-1 movies," Cooper said. "Since then, the economics have changed a little bit. DVDs aren't selling the same way they were when we released those even just a year, and a year and a half ago."

A new compilation of Stargate Atlantis episodes, Fans' Choice, just dropped on Blu-ray on Aug. 4, featuring the pilot "Rising" and an extended cut of "Enemy at the Gate." That won't help Cooper mount a new production.

"That, obviously, is already produced," Cooper said. "Putting it on DVD or Blu-ray is not the same as the investment it would take to start from scratch."

Should the two DVD films be made, they would follow previous entries in having independent storylines that would not affect the upcoming Syfy original series SGU. "They would stand alone," Cooper said. "The Atlantis one takes place shortly after the end of season five. The SG-1, I think, takes place sometime in an intermediary period between when the SG-1 movies left off and when Universe began."

SGU debuts Oct. 2 with a two-hour premiere at 9 p.m. ET/PT; it will air Fridays at 9 on Syfy.

I'd buy the DVDs just as I purchased the others. And what's with all the "I thinks" - either he wrote it or he didn't

By Hobbes at 1:19 PM ON 08/12/09

I'd buy it as well, no questions asked. Also looking forward to buying the whole Sg-1 series when/if it comes out on Blu-ray.

By StellaByStargate at 1:43 PM ON 08/12/09

Actually, in point of fact, the SG-1 script has been written by Brad Wright and Carl Binder and the SGA script by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie.

By themongol5 at 2:00 PM ON 08/12/09

I thought MGM already gave them the green light to make both of them, and that they were just waiting on the scripts to be finalized...

By mgoblue at 2:32 PM ON 08/12/09

The Stargate Atlantis fans choice is an insult to fans. I'm sorry but 25 bucks at Wal-Mart (Canada) for 2 ep's of the series on Blu Ray is a total ripoff.

By Trip327 at 4:00 PM ON 08/12/09

I'd buy the Atlantis one, but I'm not an SG-1 fan. I think even if they couldn't get it made for DVD, Syfy should at least consider making them as tv movies to air on the channel. At least that way both series can continue in some form.

By kennythewraith at 4:03 PM ON 08/12/09

they are greenlit and ready to go but i agree witht hem....waiting to begin production for a time when everyone is availible and you are almost certain it will sell like crazy is a good move imo.they never promised it would be made right away....just that they would get made and they have worked on them both this last year.i can wait until 2010 for these movies....its not the end of thw world that they havent been made yet.

By Kristen at 4:16 PM ON 08/12/09

I need my Stargate movies.

By me at 4:40 PM ON 08/12/09

IDIOTS. FRAKKING IDIOTS. DVD sales have dropped since people are looking ahead to getting a blu-ray player in the next year or so. Why buy old format disks? SO YOU MAKE THEM IN DVD AND BLU-RAY. This is not rocket science.

By gorehound696 at 4:40 PM ON 08/12/09

I am not buying any blu-ray but i do buy DVd and i own legally all the SGA & SG1 DVD's.
And i thought that there would be a movie each year but i guess not.

By AZITDad at 5:00 PM ON 08/12/09

I would buy the DVD. I don't understand why Atlantis was canceled, but that's NBC for you. I don't care to watch SGU, because it sounds too much like BS Galactica or some other mood disorder inspired piece of crap. And what's with the SyFy logo change? Sounds stupid.

By Cheapshot at 5:39 PM ON 08/12/09

@ AZITDad - SGA was canceled because it is too much work to do 2 productions at once. SGU won the vote... and I almost agree with ya on SGU sounding like a BSG rip-off, but from all the trailors it does show some promise.

And let's face it, Stargate fans will not tolerate too much of a deviation from what they have grown to love... it just doesn't make sense.

By Falconer at 5:42 PM ON 08/12/09

I'd buy a new SG-1 DVD only because I love the series so much, BUT... Overall, I could live without any more. This seems to be milking the fans needlessly when they should be focusing on doing Stargate Universe as well as they can. THAT I do want to see.

By metoo at 5:52 PM ON 08/12/09

@AZITDad

Wow finally someone who agrees with me on BS Galactica. I thought it was a bad space (soap) opera myself.

By Gremelin at 6:44 PM ON 08/12/09

I'd buy them both the day they came out, like I did their predecessors... Comeon, stop making excuses; you took ALL stargate off the air, and are leaving us high and dry for SGU which could flop at any time...

By SG1AtlantisFan at 6:45 PM ON 08/12/09

I can't see why the HELL anyone wouldn't want to buy the DVD's. As pointed out by some friends of mine SEASON 5 of ATLANTIS is selling WAY BETTER than Season 4 did last year!

GET WITH IT AND STEP ON IT! WE WANT OUR MOVIES!!!!!!

As for SGU....more like SGCRAP! I WILL NOT be watching that one. I agree with those that said it's like Battlestar Soap Opera! I do not hold out hope for SGU.

By yokozuka at 7:10 PM ON 08/12/09

Oh, come on!...I Have been a ¨STARGATE¨ Fan since i 1st saw the original movie in theaters, you know, the one where the sets didn´t look like cartboard, the props didn´t look so made of plastic, and costumes looked much more real, not just like silly customs from a shop!...How dare you mock and insult the great ¨BSG¨?...I Mean real METAL, BAD-ASS special FX, real clothing, no LASER beams or weird ¨Space-Time-Continuum¨ bullshit!...Just blood, sweat, hardship, down to earth issues,Real people, on a QUEST...I say it´s far more realistic and more relevant, than ¨Stargate¨ is NOW, ever since they got Asgard,Goa´uld and Tok´Ra technology and all that stuff it has turned into ¨Star Trek¨, they even joked about it once(xD)....I Like ¨Stargate¨, it feeds my dorkyness, but seriously!...Battlestar is MUCH more, it´s something to be PROUD of...
P.S:Now that i got all that out of my CHEST, hope that they make those movies, cuz i think they work better than the actual TV Show did.

By Skylore at 7:12 PM ON 08/12/09

I'd buy both movies in a heartbeat, just like every single other SG franchise DVD. Heck, I even bought the SGA's Fan's Choice Blu-Ray and I don't even have a Blu-Ray player yet!

Hurry up and make the movies!!! Please!!!!!!

By majorsal at 7:22 PM ON 08/12/09

make the movies already!!

the vast majority of dvds out there are of movies and shows *already seen*, but the sg1 and atlantis movies would be NEW. that's got to make their sales better.

stop messing around with the new series and give the fans *what* they want! please!

By PBMom at 8:02 PM ON 08/12/09

I'm not going to go out and buy Blu-Ray, but I would most certainly buy it on regular DVD as I have every single thing they've produced.

By NoDoubtFan at 10:22 PM ON 08/12/09

ugh. now this sucks. They promise us that they will make the SGA movie and SGU. Now we're just getting SGU. Way to respect the fans that have followed the franchise and have brought EVERY dvd. Now i know what dvd's i will NOT be buying: sgu.

By KamenRiderGumo at 11:40 PM ON 08/12/09

While I'm not looking forward to SGU (seems to much like Galactica's remake to me - at least THAT piece of crap's gone for good now), I will wait patiently for and buy the SG1/SGA movies if/when they come out. And in all honesty, I really lost any and all faith I ever had in SciFi/SyFy/whatever they're gonna change the name to next over the last few years. Without Tremors: The Series, SG-1 and SGA, they stopped airing ANYthing I had any interest in. (Who the hell actually WATCHES Eureka and Dr. Who, anyway? Boggles the mind, really....)

By cimmer at 11:57 PM ON 08/12/09

I'm so sick of all this double talk. Just tell us you aren't doing it so we can move on and find another series to watch or if they can't get it done I wish MGM or Syfy or whoever could release it to someone else. Maybe someone else could give us a fresh take on the franchise. When I read this kind of thing all I can think is if they're spinning like this on the movies how can I believe anything they have to say on their new series or anything else. Stick a fork in me, I'm done. LOL

By Serena at 3:51 AM ON 08/13/09

I'll watch the movies when they come out. If they come out...
Otherwise no interest in Stargate anymore.
SGU is the thing that killed Atlantis and I will never forgive that. Ever.

By RacerX at 3:52 AM ON 08/13/09

Come on they cant wait any longer on the SG1 movie - it is supposed to be Jack heavy - and im sorry but he aint getting any younger. He turns 60 soon enough - and he just isnt the Jack we all remember. thats just the way it is

By Twig H. at 3:58 AM ON 08/13/09

Make the Movies!! i mean im not an atlantis fan but a big SG1 fan. i bought Ark of Truth the day it came out & a friend of mine bought Continuum FOR ME cuz i didnt have the money. If the fans want the movies Make the Damn movies! I'll buy 'em!! & the whole SGU seeming like BSG, im in agreement. From the looks of it, it does seem a little "dramatic".

By chucknician at 4:53 AM ON 08/13/09

WFT this is a joke, a very bad joke, for god sake make the bloody movies, that’s what you said when you give the excuses for axing SGA for Stargate Crapiverse!! You damm well know that people will buy it just have to look at the US sales of season 5, add that to the figures when the rest of world get it, what more do you need. This sucks really does, I will buy a SGA movie hell I'd even buy SG1 as well if it helped SGA, but I can safely say I will never buy anything Crapiverse related!!! You an keep your wanabe BSG, come Lost, come Voyager, come whatever bloody show it is! An don’t even get me started on the whole blu ray thing “arrghh” overpriced waste of money , DVDs are not + how the hell can you compare an existing ep thats on bloody blu ray to a NEW project, just another bunch of usless waffle on the part of PTB an they wonder why we have no time or respect for them.

By Crystalline Enity at 5:02 AM ON 08/13/09

What? this is just stupid, who are these people in charge do they have any brain cells because they do not appear to be using them. There is a market for SGA an SG1 not everybody is looking forward to SGU some of us are only here for Atlantis or SG1. This is just silly an has got so out of hand, please make the movie, your fan base is sitting here getting more an more fed up with the lies an rubbish being spouted. If you have no intention to make this then say so, an we can move on an leave you to your SGU! by the way good luck with that, your going to need it.

By Pissed of SGA fan at 5:10 AM ON 08/13/09

Christ here we go again, make the movies for god sakes, it what you said you would do or were you just spinning us a line. DVD sales "blah blah" blue ray sales "blah blah" Unbelieveable, an you have the cheek to want us to give SGU a chance? Now thats what is gonna kill the franchise.

By DTSBIOTCH at 5:19 AM ON 08/13/09

KamenRiderGumo everyone watches Doctor Who. it's about to celebrate it's 50th anniversary something these shows can only dream to do one of these days. so who watches it you ask. EVERYONE ON THE PLANET!!!!!!!!!!!!

By llperkiss at 9:51 AM ON 08/13/09

I think he protests too much!
If you don't want to do it, man up and say so. Otherwise, get off the stick and make the movies. People are paying a lot of money for the conventions. The last one was sold out and the economy was worse. If you wait too long the interest will just fade away. I think your getting too old for this type of work. Age isn't the problem...just the willingness to try things. Common, get some balls and give it a shot.

By JamalDB at 10:55 AM ON 08/13/09

Is he for real? Dude, I'd buy that now, and i don't have a bloody job and relies on 140 a week unemployment--- and i usually collect cans for extra tidbits, and i'd still buy it.

By phil at 11:05 AM ON 08/13/09

i also will buy them now ..no problem or hesitationyuk4fe

By T at 11:44 AM ON 08/13/09

OMG what another load of BS, what do you take us for, if you dont want to do it say so, but no just string the fans along in the hope (vain as it may be) we will watch SGU. We would buy a SGA movie now even more so with all the crap thats around, if ever we needed escapsim its now. You cant just leave the story hanging!

By Joyce at 12:00 PM ON 08/13/09

Here’s a thought, if they were so worried about the recession an down turn in sales NOW an all that jazz, then WHY did they cancel a well loved high rating show, with a good fan base already, under the guise of going out on top an moving it to DVD movies, to replace with a untried as of yet unknown format. New cast, New set, a whole heap of new expenditure, PR an marketing, which they seem to be throwing money at like its going out of fashion. Instead of sticking with a tried an tested product they know that performed well an would most likely make a profit therefore not much of a gamble, wait for the market to recover an the recession not biting as hard, THEN test waters an do SGU an be in a better position to do the movies an make a bigger profit.! Because there is not much difference between now an this time last year. SO WHY are they so concerned NOW an using all these excuses for NOT MAKING THE MOVIES. I might not be in business but even that makes sense to me or even do a business analysis an forecast to see if it was a variable project. Unless of course its all BS an PTB an just wanted a reason to cancel Atlantis an just feed the fans a line an expect us to accept it.

By Shepsgirl4ever at 12:05 PM ON 08/13/09

I love the if's, should's as someone else said be a man have the bulls to be honest to the fans at least just once! This is so crappy!

If you make them we will but them!

By fu#ked off ex stargate fan at 12:57 PM ON 08/13/09

Theres only so much crap you can stomach an this is my fill you killed SGA for no good reason, so simply put take SGU shove it where the sun dont shine, an bascially shove Stargate all together as you have effectly killed it, cause I now moving on.

By TheDocToRx at 1:33 PM ON 08/13/09

SGU better not be another soap in space deal like BSG. BSG was great for the first 2.5 seasons. By the second part of season 3 it turned to crap! After that made no scene whatsoever. An ANGEL WTF????!!!!!??????!!!!!?????!!!! Was the Viper an angel to???!!!!!????!!

By TheDocToRx at 1:35 PM ON 08/13/09

fu#ked off ex stargate fan - I am following you, where are we goin!!

By TheDocToRx at 1:39 PM ON 08/13/09

Joyce, your answer is - Bonnie Hammer is a complete IDIOT!!!!!! her greatest line "its to science fictiony" WTF crap is that? Im done with this channel, if it were not for the SG-1 reruns I would not have it on AT ALL. SciFi er SyFy - you are dead to me! But, the little kids and low IQ people will love your new channel......

By Kryche at 2:21 PM ON 08/13/09

Stargate SG1 always felt very mundane and rather dry and cheesy, Atlantis was a big improvement and made the franchise at least watchable. I expect that SGU will continue that trend.

As far as I'm concerned, they can take as long as they want to make the movies, I won't bother with the SG1 movie (that part of the franchise is played out and should just be retired), but I wouldn't mind seeing Atlantis actually having time and money spent on it rather than rushing it through production with a small budget and crappy production values. Not that I expect that to happen, but I'm at least hopeful.

By A_fan at 8:39 PM ON 08/13/09

Its true I don't buy dvds like i used to. but I do still purchase them. and the ones I do buy are straight to dvd movies like the stargate ones and the futurama ones. I have bought all of them. I don't have the seasons of stargate sg1 because they are a little more but i do have some atlantis. I will continue to purchase if you continue to make them.

By sheppardflyboy at 10:03 PM ON 08/13/09

I think its all a conspiracy.. *looks around* .. What the F&^$ did you mess with a great thing. and as far as running two shows side by side they did it for two years why the F&%^ couldnt they with sga and sgu...

By Atlantis Rocks at 5:43 AM ON 08/15/09

This is just what I believed would be the situation, sorry but I dont thing they have EVER had any intention to make a movie an will never do as they have their new nice shinny toy to play with.

I don’t think I can be really bothered with TPTB anymore if this is there view for the future or New Age Stargate in general. I 'm done well an truly done, the only thing I wanted as no season 6 was at least a movie or two FAT CHANCE of that now. TTPB you can keep SGU an you precious little franchise, I just don’t care anymore, I'm still SGA though but this mess you created no.

Never was a there a better time to move on because this is just a farce. I don’t think its even worth looking on this site or anywhere anymore for news, if it happens I'll be over the moon when I see a DVD in the shops showing SGA movie, if not as I suspect here’s hoping that the SGA actors get some new shows soon, now that is something I will be actively looking for.

But New Age Stargate as whole NO, no longer interested thanks, I‘ve just had a belly fall!

By domdom at 8:43 AM ON 08/15/09

Whoa it's just a lame as explanation.
How TBTP can tell us the movie is postponed once again coz financial issues where the same TPTB have just announced SGU's budget increased 1M than SGA per eps if I remember well at the comic con 2009?
How can they tell this when the reason of the SGA cancellation was the cost( cost a lot to produce, not enough return on their investment?
they whined about SGA budget why TPTB don't use it for SGA. Budget was noy the real reason of the cancellation they obtained more for SGU.
In addition money doesn't make success as the spec effects. You need actors and I'm not sure you got them. Known actors seems here to hide the lack of originality. SAD
In August 2008 it was a good time for SGA to move on other format movie and straight DVD It was the great opportunity. It was a great chance to get bigger budget for a big format.
Now they told us the turndown DVD market compromise this success. How don't they see this when they took the decision? God They had the successful show in their hands!!
Now they got more important budget for SGU they will have to obtain bigger success to earn their return on their investement and this it's not sure at all.
Listen all the comments about their last attempt to regain our trust and their viewers they lost.
They've just want we wait for SGU that's all and IMO they've never the intention to produce the movie.
I bought all SG1 boxes till 8th season and the 5 seasons boxes of SGA and I'm sure of it will be the last franchise Stargate purchase from me and it's painful to say this coz I follow the show from the beginning. In addition don't tell us the DVD SGA sells are not so profitable. 100.000 sold the first week.
Stop to not the tell the real truth.

By sg major fan at 3:51 AM ON 08/16/09

i will buy all SG & SGA movies and box sets on blu ray and DVD (again) if it meant the new movies would go into production soon

By kristintaps at 9:43 PM ON 08/16/09

Please make the SG-1 Movie and wrap up that Sam and Jack storyline. It's like when someone plays seven notes of a scale and you just need them to finish up that octave and play the eighth note. Or when someone tells you an entire joke and then goes, "oh.. if I could just remember the punch line.. darn it!," Or like when your PVR misses the last 2 minutes of a results show. Or like when someone. Yes I didn't finish my sentence. Did it bug you? I'd like the Atlantis Movie too. Wasn't ready to say goodbye (see above).

By Cowboy1 at 7:03 AM ON 08/17/09

I agree with Kristintaps about SG1 and having a conclusion to SAM/JACK however just to have SG1 movies is enough. I will never grow tired of em.

By shuls at 11:01 AM ON 08/19/09

....and Im waiting for new series on tv of Star Trek Enterprise while Scott Bakula and the boys from Enterprise are still young! Theres still a lot to go on that story line.

By crownbarbie at 1:40 PM ON 08/23/09

Not to change the topic, but I agree with ‘shuls’, ST: Enterprise ROCKED!! It was the best ST of all time and I love NTG. They could make some movies of ST:E

But back to the real subject: SG1/A. Make the movies NOW…quit jerking us around or you will lose what is left of the fan base. SGA should have not been cancelled, especially without an ending…what’s wrong with you people? Don’t you know a money maker when you see one?

I am not very interested in SGU, but I will give it a try just because I am so starved for something SG related….

By bc at 12:26 AM ON 08/25/09

They axed Atlntis to make way for Universe, so I will never watch it, if they want me back as a viewer, they must bring Atlantis back!

By Ian Beale at 12:32 PM ON 09/01/09

I'd not only buy the DVD, I would buy it as gifts for people I know to try and get them into it as well. I am going to give Universe a go. How I feel about Universe now is how I felt about Atlantis before I watched it and Atlantis now, I love equally as much as SG-1 so hopefully Universe will make us feel the same way we feel when it come to SG-1 and Atlantis.

By tigerguy1199 at 11:53 PM ON 09/25/09

I am as big a fan as anyone. I loved Ark and Continuum. I loved the fact that with the bigger budget made it more movie-like. I am not going to bitch everyone has been hit in one way or the other by the economy. But when the movies are made I will be at the store to buy them. As for Universe I will give it its chance and lets see what happens. I was hooked on SG1 and and Atlantis after the Pilot episodes so Universe has high standerds to live up to.
