No one told Stargate Universe star not to reveal spoilers

No one told \<i\>Stargate Universe\<\/i\> star not to reveal spoilers

Stargate Universe star Robert Carlyle fortunately didn't get the memo saying that stars of sci-fi series shouldn't tell reporters what's going to happen, and he was only too happy to share with us a raft of spoilers for the upcoming Syfy original series.

Carlyle headlines the ensemble cast as Dr. Nicholas Rush, the reclusive leader who is responsible for an accident that sends a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians through a Stargate onto the runaway Ancient starship Destiny. Needless to say, there are spoilers ahead!

Take one recent episode. "I was floating in a tank, and that was kind of bizarre, in actual fact," Carlyle said in a group interview last month at Comic-Con in San Diego. "A bunch of aliens actually got me. Of course, Rush is left on a planet, which is what he deserves, and then the aliens come and pick him up and stick him in a tank. So that's where you suddenly pick me up again, floating in it. So that was quite cool."

But wait, there's more. "We do all die, and then we come back to life," Carlyle revealed. "It's a very, very interesting episode written by Robert Cooper called 'Time.'"

Also look for Stargate SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson to return to his old stomping grounds, reprising the role of Gen. Jack O'Neill. "He was lovely," Carlyle said. "He really was. He was very humble about the whole thing, in fact. I think he also understood, very quickly, that this is a different thing. He said it was a different show from the one that he had been used to, and, of course, Gen. O'Neill comes back. I think that he's in four or five of the episodes, but you don't actually need to know who the guy is at all. He's so solid with his character, and that's fantastic to act with."

SGU is built around the same mythology as the two previous Stargate series but is nevertheless intended to stand alone for viewers new to the franchise. "I guess we have to obviously give a nod to SG-1 and Atlantis, because we wouldn't be here if those shows hadn't been there," Carlyle acknowledged. "I don't think it's necessary to have watched any of that, at all, in fact. I mean, I guess you have the issues of this general, and even if you hadn't seen him before, he would just seem like another character, so we don't have to be familiar with the past to take on the future."

Aboard the Destiny, the major friction will take place between Carlyle's Rush and Col. Everett Young, played by Louis Ferreira. "Myself and Louis Ferreira are together a lot, and we go on extremely well, because we have to, because we're at each other's throats," Carlyle said. "It's very, very tense stuff."

Younger characters provide passive-aggressive tensions for Rush. David Blue plays Eli, a genius slacker. "Rush is kind of like Salieri, and Eli is a Mozart," Carlyle described. "That's what's going on. He needs this boy. This boy is probably much more clever than him, but he's not going to let him know that."

Rush might seem hardened or gruff, certainly antisocial, but Carlyle said he is not mean or vicious. "I think he's got a wicked sense of humor, but he keeps pretty much to himself," Carlyle said. "I don't think he's the kind of guy who takes pleasure in other people's discomfort or anything like that. He would be quite happy on his own. He's troubled in terms of his wife. His wife is dead, and he wasn't exactly there for her, and this is what caused an awful lot of Rush's problems. He's a very, very lonely man."

Stargate Universe premieres Oct. 2 at 9 p.m on Syfy.

All the talk is how it's so different from previous stargates, but I predict that will only last half a season. It won't be long before the writer's room can't help themselves, and we have an episode about a stranded Asgard in another galaxy, or a Go'uld system lord or colony far from home, or a floating Ancient city that looks surprisingly like Atlantis.

And of course, the obligatory cameos from old SG hands from way back will pop up when starnge technology is discovered that allows a link backwards or forwards with Earth.

Same old... they just won't be able to help themselves.

Duh, Its called Stargate Universe. Give us a break. I an anxious awaiting its premier

If there are connections to the other Stargate series, that's all rightr with me. All the other Sci-fi series shows (Star Trek, Star Wars, even Superman) has connections wih previous series. That is needed for those who saw the other series first as a way to tie them all together and keep the new series in sync, while allowing the new series to develop its own stories, and keep everyone entertained.

Keep up the good work, Sy Fy! I am a fan since the channel had the Saturn logo.

According to IMDB, Louis Ferreira is still using his more famous stage name, "Justin Louis." The picture Sci-Fi Wire is using credits him as "Justin Louis" also.

I guess it's just the best combination of stage and real name....

I wonder if there was some personal awakening that make Ferreira want to get back to his roots?

I, for one, can't wait to see Stargate: Voyager ... I mean Universe. Sorry, easy mistake to make.

Sci-fi fans are a fickle bunch. Not me though, I will watch the premier with an open mind and will either like it or not on it's own merits. Not previous shows, not other folks opinions on internet message boards.

There is nothing at all wrong with it having occasional references to previous series. I would be disappointed if it didn't, as that would be weird and highly unusual. Ditto for lack of cameos from previous series stars.

I can say I am pretty eagerly awaiting the premier.

I think the show sounds great. I miss the other Stargates so this can hopefully fill the gap. I can't wait to see Richard Dean Anderson, he is missed. Hope some of the other characters from Stargate appear as well.

"No one told Stargate Universe star not to reveal spoilers"

Ummmm, yeah right!

That having been said, I'll give the show a shot.

If I like it (fanboy hype.bashing/network lackey ecstatic hype notwithstanding), then I'll stick around.

If not, then it'll go the way of Painkiller Jane, Flash Gordon, Invisible Man and all of the other over-hyped stink-bombs put out that didn't click with the audience.

i havent heard any mention of Lou Diamond Phillips?is it just a cameo?

By KatsuKaze at 1:30 PM ON 08/05/09

Like MCP-001 I'm not buying the "not to reveal spoilers" anlge...

If this is SyFy's show and this is SyFy's website and they really wanted to keep things from being revealed, wouldn't it make sense NOT to publish this article?

By InfiniteMonkey at 1:35 PM ON 08/05/09

Can't wait for this one! Cheers!

By PBMom at 1:53 PM ON 08/05/09

Love spoilers. Thank you so much. I didn't think he revealed too much. A tank and aliens. Could still be anything. Everyone dies and comes back? Always somewhere in a sci-fi show. That is a given. No true spoiler there. More and more info gets shared, the more excited I get.

By phoenixjf at 2:24 PM ON 08/05/09

I will try the show out. I can already see, however, one vital element that this show's creators are leaving out--humor. O'Neill had all the good lines, spouting the funniest, irreverent things even in the most serious of moments. I loved the characters, the plots, the overall directions the first series took. The humor was most important for me, and that has never been adequate in Atlantis and is intentionally left out of Universe. I don't predict a long life for it.

By Nyarlathotep at 4:22 PM ON 08/05/09

ill give it a go, I like Robert Carlyle, and it sounds like itll be better than the mundane crap that was Stargate Atlantis with its weekly forest-planets and primitive medieval settlements..that show was a laughable parody, so if they can get away from that and make a decent show im all for that.. I hope its good. Ill hope they have decent aliens too, and they wont go the generic route of "bugs" and "humanoids" like so many uncreative sci-fi shows seem to do.

By Vanny at 6:34 AM ON 08/06/09

I agree with "Tekzel". Sci-Fi fans complain about everything. But just wait until SGU premiers, and see how quick they will all rush to watch it.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS SHOW! We need something good to Watch, and Stargate has never let me down before.

By BlahDeDah54 at 8:56 AM ON 08/06/09

Huge fan of the Star Gate "universe" (past shows). I will give this show a chance, but if it does not live up to my expectations, I will turn it off and watch more exciting episodes of CSI or some reality TV show....NOT.

By JimFromJersey at 10:34 AM ON 08/06/09

Hey Tom,

If that's such an easy mistake to make, you should probably stay away from sharp objects. And electricity. And motor vehicles. And those of the opposite sex. Or the same sex. Just zip up your padded suit, secure your helmet and waddle out to the little yellow bus.
