How about Monroeville, PA (Pittsburgh) Monroeville Mall, site of the original DAWN OF THE DEAD?

By Jayr at 4:12 PM ON 08/31/09

What about Devils Tower in Wyoming the landing site of the mothership in Close Encounters Of The Third Kind? Or is that too obvious!?!

By Synd-e at 4:16 PM ON 08/31/09

How about the Superman statue in Metropolis, IL?

By loganschlieghliegh at 5:46 PM ON 08/31/09

I'm surprised that they didn't mention Santa Cruz, Ca. where they filmed just about all of the movie The Lost Boys.

By MaxxTx at 6:07 PM ON 08/31/09

You can also add the Ft Worth Water gardens as the exit location from Logan's Run.

By Bruce Simmons at 6:13 PM ON 08/31/09

And Vulcan, in Alberta Canada.

By pjowens75 at 6:14 PM ON 08/31/09

You realize, of course, that the 2 places you list for Twilight as being in Forks WA, are in reality nowhere near Forks WA, don't you? One is in Port Angeles WA (60 mi. away) and the other near Portland OR (over 200 mi. away).

By J at 6:36 PM ON 08/31/09

The original "The Blob" was not made in 1988; it was made in 1958. I should know--I grew up about 15 miles from the Colonial Theatre. "Blobfest" is quite the annual event.

By profef at 7:28 PM ON 08/31/09

How about the true birthplace of Superman? Cleveland, OH. See the childhood home of Jerry Siegel co-creator of Superman in the place where the concept was created.

By Grace at 7:29 PM ON 08/31/09

*snort* Last time I checked Vancouver was not, in fact, a part of the United States.

By Gill Avila at 9:06 PM ON 08/31/09

What? You forgot the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley CA? The site of the Colossus programming office in "Colossus: The Forbin Project?"

By divephotog at 9:37 PM ON 08/31/09

Don't forget to hit 30 Rockefeller in NY, and the CA studios of SyFy, and see where Science Fiction used to be prime in the studios of Sci-Fi, but has now gone on a decline (sad to say). - KH

By Shareth at 12:56 AM ON 09/01/09

since when does Twilight count as science fiction? Put Seattle's Sci-Fi Museum down instead.

By Craig at 12:57 AM ON 09/01/09

A few more Vancouver BC connections:
Reaper (bumped into Tyler LaBine on the False Creek seawall yesterday...)

You forgot to mention Citrus Ave., in Old Town Covina, Covina, CA. It stood-in for Roswell, NM in The WB's Roswell. The cafe that was the Crashdown is still there, though the UFO is gone, but the the old post office that was the exterior for the UFO Museum where Max worked has since been demolished.

The View Point Inn, from "Twilight", is in Corbett, Oregon, not Washington.
The high school sequences were filmed at James Madison High, on NE 82nd Ave., In Portland, Or.

By G'nort at 4:23 AM ON 09/01/09

How about the Endor moon? Wasn't that Crescent City, CA? I know; I know; but I for one liked the Ewoks. Back then I was still in single digits of age of course, but compared to Jar Jars, they weren't so bad, right?

Labor Day weekend...
How could you not include Atlanta host of DragonCon?!!!!!

By SCI FI WIRE STAFF at 8:23 AM ON 09/01/09

Thanks for all the tips. We'll make sure to include the best of them when we update the map in the future!

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 8:58 AM ON 09/01/09

You should note that a couple of those E.T. locations in California are currently being threatened by wildfires.

By Roger Workman at 11:11 AM ON 09/01/09

How about Michigan Central Station in Detroit? It's a favorite of Michael Bay, used in Transformers and The Island. In its better days, it was in North by Northwest.

By Mike at 2:49 PM ON 09/01/09

Two words: Atlanta, Dragon*Con.

By SMDrPepper at 12:30 PM ON 09/02/09

Let us not forget St Louis as the stand in for New York in "Escape from New York".

By SMB at 3:42 PM ON 09/02/09

I can't believe a list of "must-see sci-fi sights" *doesn't* include Grover's Mill, NJ -- where the Martians landed in War of the Worlds. And, at the risk of sounding like Roman in "Party Down": VAMPIRES ARE NOT SCI-FI. Good lord.

By Canadian at 4:12 PM ON 09/02/09

Oh stupid Grace...first they mentioned that vancouver, bc was not part of US. Which is a good thing...but when you say Vancouver was not a part of the US...well it is...there is a VAncouver, WA below the better Vancouver, British Columbia.

By jough at 4:42 PM ON 09/02/09

What?! No grover's Mill, NJ?! but you included the tourist trap Ripleys museum?!

By Tahlen at 7:20 PM ON 09/02/09

Starfleet Academy in "San Francisco"
"Oviatt Library at Cal State University
Northridge, alongside San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge"

Um, actually Cal State Northridge is in Los Angeles county, north of Van Nuys and NW of LA; not in San Francisco.
In fact, it's about 5 Mi. NW of Sepulveda Dam, site of many films and TV shows, such as Knight Rider and Buckaroo Banzai (the area where they march at the end of the movie), off the top of my head.

By Toxic at 8:45 AM ON 09/03/09

What about devil's Tower in Wyoming? CE3K!

By Droid at 11:10 AM ON 09/03/09

Much of George Lucas' THX-1138 was shot at the Marin Civic Center in Northern California (another Frank Loyd Wright building).

And, for a truly fictional science experience, one might visit any of L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics centers.

By Fooman at 9:31 PM ON 09/03/09

Also... Flour Danial Building 3347 Michelson Irvine CA, Used almost exclusivly for Demolition Man.

UC Irvine - Many building exteriors where used for later Planet of the Apes movies.

Corona Del Mar Beach - Corona Del Mar CA. on the South end of the beach you can see where the head of the statue of liberty was laying at the end of the original Planet of the Apes.

Tustin Blimp Hangers, Tustin CA... used for many movies and commericals notably X-Files the movie, and used as a soundstage for the comet scenes in Armageddon

By armadillo59 at 5:14 AM ON 09/04/09

Excellent start can't wait for the updates, How about adding the best Sci-Fi Road Trip "Starman" with Jeff Bridges.

By Mack at 7:33 AM ON 09/04/09

Death Proof is NOT sci-fi. Pretty good list though.

By Darguz Parsilvan at 9:09 AM ON 09/04/09

You're joking, right? The Ripley's museum is based on the 1980's TV show? Riplye's first permanent exhibit opened in 1950, following numerous temporary exhibits starting at the 1933 World's Fair (an exhibit based on Ripley's published feature which started in 1918) . Life started before 1980, and often involved things other than TV.

By Rolland at 12:46 PM ON 09/04/09

I wish the map was bigger...

By David Cervera at 1:34 PM ON 09/04/09

There are actually a bunch of Ripley's museums all over the country, including Hollywood, San Francisco, and Branson, Missouri. (See www.ripleys.com for the full list). And they have been around long before the 80's TV show.

By David Cervera at 1:46 PM ON 09/04/09

You mention Griffith Park Observatory for Terminator, you might also note that Griffith Park is the location of the tunnel which appears in Back to the Future 2 and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (although it's not anywhere near as long as it appears in those movies).

By David Cervera at 2:00 PM ON 09/04/09

Two more locations in the West:

1) In Genessee, Colorado, about 15 miles west of Denver, is the flying-saucer looking house from Woody Allen's Sleeper. It can be easily seen from I-70.

2) Goblin Valley State Park in southern Utah was the location of the alien planet visited by the crew of Galaxy Quest.

By JordanC at 3:22 PM ON 09/04/09

FYI- The Moondance Diner of where MJ worked in Spiderman no longer exists in Manhattan. It was moved to make way for (yuck) a condo a few years back. Absolute tragedy. I think it's been reassembled in Wyoming somewhere though...

By Marc Mattson at 5:42 PM ON 09/04/09

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Dallas court house was also used as Dr. Faber's office in "The Lathe of Heaven."

I don't know if it counts as sci fi, but the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park CO is where the original Shining was written and the tv movie produced. It wasn't the site of the Nicholson movie though. It's a FANTASTIC Victorian hotel, absolutely gorgeous and lovingly haunted. :)

By Serai at 2:59 PM ON 09/19/09

Wait...how is Cal State University Northridge "next to the Golden Gate Bridge?? CSUN is at the north end of the San Fernando Valley, right next to LOS ANGELES. You're about 350 miles off, there!

By Serai at 3:03 PM ON 09/19/09

Another location: the Los Angeles River near downtown L.A., location for a number of films such as Terminator 2, Buckaroo Banzai, Repo Man, and others.

By aenea at 6:48 AM ON 09/20/09

There is a difference between "sites", and "sights".

By CountessBaltar at 8:35 AM ON 10/26/09

Okay, It's after Labor Day but...

The Oviatt Library as CSU,Northridge was also used for exterior shots in Sky High (as the "Sky High" school itself), several episodes of Star Trek: TNG and/or DS9, and the original Battlestar Galactica (as "Gomoray" in "The Living Legend"). As well as other movies and TV series.

Terminator 2 also filmed scenes at the nearby Northridge Mall but don't bother with that one. It was the part of the mall that did not survive the earthquake and was rebuilt. Although the nearby canal where they had the motorcycle chase was still there last time I looked.
