SGU's Lou Diamond Phillips reassures Stargate fans

Much has been said about how Syfy's upcoming Stargate Universe will take the long-standing franchise in a new direction, but star Lou Diamond Phillips promised there would be enough for faithful fans of the Stargate series as well.

"The Stargate is at the center of it," Phillips said in an exclusive interview Wednesday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif. The show will also focus on the combined military and civilian exploration of space, much like SG-1 and Atlantis before it, he added.

But Phillips, who plays Col. Telford, said the show will do some new things as well.

"I think audiences today are looking for something that's a little more grounded, so to speak, even when you're doing sci-fi," Phillips said. "It's grittier. It's darker. It's very much character-driven. It's about the dynamics between very real people in an extraordinary situation and not so much about heroes and villains, you know? And also not as much about the hardware anymore. I mean, certainly it has created its own world, it has its own mythology, but it's about how these everyday human beings—be they military, scientific or political—fit into this scenario."

SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an Ancient ship, the Destiny, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. Phillips (Syfy's The Triangle) plays a lifelong military man who is the chosen leader of the ill-fated expedition.

"I'm supposed to go through the Stargate into this unknown address," Phillips said. "The base is attacked, and a lot of people who should not be in charge are stranded on this ship out in the middle of nowhere called the Destiny. I get stuck on Earth, and it's my mission to try to get to these people ... back, but I have no way to physically get on the ship. ... [So I] keep using these telecommunications stones, exchanging bodies with people and trying to take over and ... get them home."

The body-changing communications device is presumably based on the Ancient technology discovered in the season-nine SG-1 episodes "Avalon," parts one and two.

"It leads to what I hope is going to be the most talked-about love scene of the fall," Phillips adds.

The new SGU will also feature characters with conflicted motives, Phillips added. For his part, "Col. Telford is so focused on his mission that ... he basically comes off as a jerk an awful lot of times," he said. "I mean, he is by the book: ... whatever it takes to get it done. And also very much driven by his ego and the fact that he wants to be the one in charge. Knows that he is more qualified than anyone to complete this mission. Yet there are some dark secrets, and, I think, there are some very interesting surprises about Telford to come."

Stargate Universe debuts Oct. 2 with a two-hour premiere at 9 p.m. ET/PT; it will air Fridays at 9 on Syfy.

It is starting to worry me a little bit that the actors of this series as well as producers and the like have to "reassure" us. It's not going to be sg1 or atlantis, we (the fans) get that. Go bold or go home. Stand by your work or quit it. Keep re-assuring or telling me it's going to be "ok" just points me in the direction "not ok."

By creno at 7:25 PM ON 08/06/09

LOL. The damage control does seem to be in high gear.

By PG15 at 10:47 PM ON 08/06/09

The title is misleading. I see no "reassuring" here; it's basically the same stuff they've been talking about since the beginning; you know, info about the show and how it fits into the Stargate franchise; stuff like that.

And you know what that is? Oh right, PUBLICITY. Because sometimes, new shows need to actually be talked about before they air. Who d'a thunk it? ;-)

The shows don't revolve around the fans. The more articles out there, the better; it makes it more likely it'll reach a large group of people and, hopefully, entice them to watch. If you're sick of SGU articles, then stop reading them.

By ETo at 11:45 PM ON 08/06/09

I like heroes and villains and the struggle between good and evil, if I wanted something grounded in reality I wouldn't be watching television. This is all to cover up for making shows cheaply! Instead of: gritty, grounded, and less about technology; you should read: cheap, easy to shoot, and no expensive props or special effects.

By ShannyBoy at 1:24 AM ON 08/07/09

ETo - I see absolutely nothing in any of the interviews/articles to back up what you're saying.

I think PG15 is right too. They're not "defending" the show, they're just telling you what it's about. They don't have to reassure anybody - the audience will be there.

By unreassured at 1:50 AM ON 08/07/09

Well, I liked the Heroes and Villians aspect of SG1 and SGA, everything I hear makes me more scared that I won't enjoy it as a part of the Stargate franchise.
Sure wish they'd come out with some good news about the Atlantis and SG1 movie, for those of us who like the "original recipe"
Remember New Coke? No?

By PG15 at 1:56 AM ON 08/07/09

@ETo: Brad Wright said so himself that this costs $1 million per episode more than Atlantis episodes.

So, definitely not cheap.

By krom at 2:27 AM ON 08/07/09

if it costs more there is scyfy's built in reason to cancel it whenever they feel like...

"if it costs more there is scyfy's built in reason to cancel it whenever they feel like..."

Not if it's MGm footing the bill. And they get more out of the Stargate franchise than SyFy do.

By diesel at 7:25 AM ON 08/07/09

Why does everything have to darker / grittier now? Not everyone likes that. Also character driven can be very boring. I am taking a wait and see approach. A great Scif-Fi show should be fast paced, story driven and action / special effects oriented. You can explore the characters little by little throughout the season. That is why it is a show. Don't focus the whole show on the characters. For that make a soap opera.

Stargate SG1 was probably the best SCIFI show in history. They need to follow the model.

By ETo at 9:30 AM ON 08/07/09

ShannyBoy and PG15 need to learn to read between the lines! A millon more than season 5 of Atlantis would put it in about th 2.5 million dollar mark, only $500,000 more than SG1 3 years ago. Stargate Atlantis had the budget cut by nearly 40% during season 5, easy to raise a budget above that.

Don't be fooled by the early episodes either, they'll blow the bank early to get viewers and then get cheap. It is the new SyFy business model: faster, cheaper, and less creative.

"[So I] keep using these telecommunications stones, exchanging bodies with people and trying to take over and ... get them home.".....my enthusiam for this show just went down about 85%...this plot device will wear out much too quickly...

"My enthusiasm for this show just went down about 85%...this plot device will wear out much too quickly..."

What about using the stargate as a plot device? Did that get worn out too? They've only used the Ancients' communication device in a handful of episodes, but they've used the stargate almost all the time.

You can't really complain about them using technology from the other shows. The communication device is just another thing that reinforces the concept that this still "Stargate" and not some other series.

I welcome that.

By PG15 at 2:34 PM ON 08/07/09

@ETo : What are your sources for those numbers?

By joesocwork at 8:30 PM ON 08/07/09

Come to think of it, I've thought I heard the phrase "It's grittier. It's darker. It's very much character-driven." to describe the beginning of Stargate Atlantis. And "it's about the dynamics between very real people in an extraordinary situation" to describe The Twilight Zone. Oh well it's all Sy-Fy :P, we'll see.

By nicklareau at 11:57 PM ON 08/07/09

"What about using the stargate as a plot device? Did that get worn out too? They've only used the Ancients' communication device in a handful of episodes, but they've used the stargate almost all the time."

The show was named Stargate, so you should expect them to use it every episode. This show is not called "Stargate: Ancient Communication Stones" so I can see where it may possibly ware out. I will watch and hope that it doesn't. Bye the way, I would like to copyright "Stargate: Ancient Communication Stones" for any future spin off series or movie.

By Kyle Nin at 2:17 AM ON 08/08/09

"This show is not called "Stargate: Ancient Communication Stones" so I can see where it may possibly ware out."

It's only been used in FOUR episodes (three on "SG-1" and one on "Atlantis")! I'd hardly call that wearing it out.

There's been other tech that's been used more often. The ZPM's, the Zat Guns, and Puddle Jumpers, to name a few. I'm not sure why anyone would get hung up on the communications device, unless they don't like the concept of it.

All of those devices were used as background items. Although it was a major goal to find more ZPMs for power, there were only occasional episodeswhere they were major plot devices. If handled incorrectly, the use of the stones every episode could feel like using the ancient weapons chair every episode. We will all simply have to watch and see how they handle it and then judge if it works for us.

I really hate syfy's stupid captcha, it mostly doesn't work and wastes my time putting input here or maybe stupid syfy does it so it keeps most of the negative talk to a minimum.

so rather then waste anymore time(this is try number 3) i'll just summaries.

1. plug someone into ancient database then hook it up to the asguard computer to make a device to fix this problem

2. episode 1969 someone from the future already came back before this happened because they can use solar flares with stargates to time travel now.

3. go find a zpm, even tho they just really need to hook someone up to the ancient database, and make one out of spare parts like in that episode jack made one out of spart parts around the base. and they can all gate home.

and finally they say there was no reassurances about this and it was advertising blah blah...

"Lou Diamond Phillips PROMISED there would be ENOUGH for FAITHFUL FANS of the Stargate series as well."

that sounds like reassurance to faithful fans if i ever hear one.

"much like SG-1 and Atlantis before it"

Uh oh, sg1 got stale and atlantis is rehash of sg1

"But Phillips, who plays Col. Telford, said the show will do some new things as well."

Isn't some a lot less then mostly, you what he is saying is that it is mostly reused ideas fromt he first series with SOME new things? Ya that sounds about right...

God help us.

By me at 1:58 PM ON 08/10/09

Regardless, I am looking forward to the show. I can't wait.

By rightfulruler at 11:08 PM ON 08/13/09

If its bad its bad if its good its good. Shows will get stale over time or turn bad or be bad from the very beginning. Atlantis was a great show up until the 5th season where the script turned crappy. 10 years is a long ime for any show and for scif-fi it is feat ventured by few. SG-1 was a charcter driven show. There were episodes that were fun of action and tech and very plot oriented or at least had to do with some subplot. Then there where character episodes that revolved around a certin person. Then there were the episodes that din't hae anything to do with plots or characters but were fun to watch. That is the best you can hope for. I have high hopes for SGU and if it isn't up to par then to hell with it. Another failed attempt at a tv show(like thats something new).

Question- Could this have anything to do with peoples anger at the new name of syfy and telling us its like our old favorites just to let us know that good shows are still here.

By tilk0 at 6:35 PM ON 08/24/09

either ya like it or ya don't.
I think i hear ya mom callin' ya..

By sg1 at 11:02 AM ON 10/17/09

This news series is pants!
It tries to copy BSG and is as boring as that program. Slow, too much personal life/problems, flashbacks, (yawn) no fun.
SG-1 and Atlantis had the right balance. Especialy SG1. Richard Dean Anderson and co, gave to Stargate exactly what was needed, just like William shatner to startrek. SG-1 will always be the best. Changing formats to a more grittier look and dragging storylines out, does not make it better.
I'm giving it one more episode, then switching off.
Bring Back SG-1! with its exciting stories, humourous moments, and the best damn crew you could wish for.

By a loal fan of SG1and stargate movies at 2:24 PM ON 10/23/09

I would not even download the episodes of SGU for FREE its that bad. (I've seen better scifi stuff made by kids on UTUBE.)

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/BringBackAtlantis/

This is a link to a petition. If you are fed up with wasting your time with a dead ship then go over and help make things right. If you loved SGA and thought it was prematurely canceled then please let your voice be heard. SGU has been the biggest mistake of the SG franchise. If we want something better then we have to speak up.
