Syfy enlists Bryan Singer for 2012-themed series
Bryan Singer

Syfy announced today that it will re-team with director/producer Bryan Singer (The Triangle) and producer Andrew Deane (Masters of Horror) and Keith Addis to develop an as-yet-untitled six-hour limited series dealing with the 2012 doomsday prophecies surrounding the Mayan calendar.

The miniseries will be written by Michael Petroni (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Dawn Treader) and Michael Bond (Passengers).

The project is described as "a thrilling action-adventure story blending scientific fact and myth with popular conspiracy theories centering on the Mayan calendar and what it predicts for mankind at its end date. With a feel of Da Vinci Code and National Treasure, it tells the story of a down-on-his-luck author/professor who goes on a worldwide adventure to uncover the mysteries surrounding the Mayan calendar and the potential apocalypse it seems to have predicted centuries ago. With an unlikely team, he races against time to prevent global catastrophe, and in doing so ultimately rediscovers his faith in humanity and himself."

"I have always been fascinated by the various myths and conspiracy theories surrounding the Mayan calendar," Singer said in a statement. "It's the most accurate calendar created by man, so accurate that many believe its origins may lie elsewhere. Regardless of what you believe, what is truly mysterious about this is that a number of cultures and religions, including Hinduism, all point toward a period of great upheaval which happens to coincide with the final month and year marked by the calendar. Our story will explore whether we are truly alone in the universe, and other related mysteries, all of which are set against the backdrop of an incredibly exciting and fast-paced adventure."

"...blending scientific fact and myth with popular conspiracy theories..."

I take it that actually means, "Putting scientific fact into a blender..." I don't mind them taking liberties with fact in fictional works. Just don't pretend like you're actually being factual.

Um...doesn't the fact that Roland Emmerich has a huge movie coming out called "2012" that deals with the exact same myth kinda make this a stupid move...?

No more stupid than syfy doing an Alice miniseries right before Tim Burton's epic retelling comes out in theaters.

It is a scientific fact that 2012 will follow 2011. Beyond that, this is no more truthful than the Easter Bunny.

Good thing they changed the name to SyFy, although StupidiFy would have been more accurate.

Grrreat!! Just another half-assed piece of junk... oh, was I too harsh? At least this sounds like it will just be a mutilation of the Maya culture all over again & not a mutiliation of an actual piece of science fiction as they did with Earthsea.

It's not the first time studios have come out w/competing movies. Deep Impact / Armageddon. Christopher Columbus / 1492. I'm sure there's more.

jhawks1510 is right, this happens all the time and it doesn't automatically mean these movies are gonna be bad. I like the Deep Impact / Armageddon example. I liked both of those movies for totally different reasons. Hopefully it will be the same with these syfy shows.

I am glad for the 2012-themed series. If it follows accurately what's revealed in many, besides Mayan, ancient text prophecies, it will be a winner.
