Uberproducer Joel Silver mulls Swamp Thing 3-D

Uberproducer Joel Silver mulls \<i\>Swamp Thing 3-D\<\/i\>

Producer extraordinaire Joel Silver has a slew of genre movies coming down the pipeline, including some about to hit theaters within the next year, including what he hopes is a new 3-D version of Swamp Thing. Silver spoke to a group of reporters today in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting the thriller Whiteout.

Following is a rundown of his projects.

Swamp Thing—Silver offered up hope that the remake he is developing might utilize 3-D technology. "I'm going to hopefully do Swamp Thing, which is a movie we've had for a long time. We think that might be great to do in 3-D," Silver said in a press conference. "I've seen the Avatar presentation in 3-D. It's very impressive. It's really cool. I think it's great. I think it's just another tool in the arsenal of the filmmaker to make something great and unique. I don't think all movies need to be in 3-D, but certain movies fit really well into that situation. As of right now, there still are less 3-D houses than 2-D houses. When the day comes that there are as many 3-D houses as 2-D houses, then I may change my mind about it."

Ninja Assassin—The Wachowski brothers produced their V for Vendetta director James McTeigue's ninja film starring Korean pop star Rain. It was originally set for a spring release, but Silver explained why Nov. 25 is more appropriate. "Ninja has a great date," Silver said. "November 25th is a great date for the movie. It really felt like the right time. It's a fall picture. It's a full-on martial-arts movie, and they really felt that was the best place for it, so that's where it went."

Sherlock Holmes—A lot has been reported about Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes adaptation starring Robert Downey Jr. as the sleuth. We know about the steampunk gadgets, the more faithful take on the Arthur Conan Doyle character and the bromance between Holmes and Watson (Jude Law). Now Silver assures fans that the mystery will keep you guessing when it's released on Christmas Day. "The story is a great mystery," Silver said. "It's kind of a legendary tale. How he figures things out is really part of the essence of the story. I think what Guy has done very effectively is show how he does that. I think the movie works really well."

The Book of Eli—The Hughes Brothers' post-apocalyptic actioner, due out Jan. 15, 2010, has not presented a final cut to the producer yet. "Not yet, but it's going to be unbelievable," Silver said. "I haven't seen the latest cut, but it's pretty fantastic."

Empire, Forbidden Planet and Grayskull—Silver had no news to share about Empire, based on Orson Scott Card's novel about a terrorist attack on the White House, nor his remake of Forbidden Planet or the update of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. "Not yet," he said. "They're all in development. Working on all of them."

Wonder Woman and Logan's Run—Two major projects long on Silver's slate continue to linger. Having gone through developers like Joss Whedon on Wonder Woman and Bryan Singer on Logan's, Silver is unsure whether these will ever get off the ground. "I don't know what's going to happen with them," he said. "When I've got 'em, I tell you."

(sigh) Theyre starting to get a little out of hand with 3D movies

By divephotog at 7:45 AM ON 08/29/09

I see a trend developing.... Let's remake all sorts of movies, and if we do it in 3D, no one will notice that we made a bad movie, and should not have undertaken the project to begin with!
How lame they thing the common movie-goer must be to buy into this... - KH

@ gorehound696,

Dude. Seriously. No one is picking up on your asinine term for remakes. Drop it, please.

By BlakOpal at 6:56 PM ON 08/29/09

I have to agree with Stone on this Gorehound.

That is seriously an asinine term, and it makes you sound like you're a major fan of movies like Not Another Teen Movie and any other stupid teen comedy that has come before it.

Drop the term. Please! For the love of all humanity, drop the term.

Don't touch Forbidden Planet! Some things are just too sacred!

By Sithboy at 2:42 AM ON 08/30/09

Orson Scott Card can bite my shiny metal boycott. Google this psycho, I can't believe someone who's supposed to be this fantastic modern science fiction writer can be so short on qualities like modernism and science.

I hate this remake overload as much as anyone, but I would be curious about a Fantastic Planet remake. Even it was just a "remake" of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Everyone said NO to a Day The Earth Stood Still remake, but since it sucked it didn't take anything away from the integrity of the original. So, a remake of an überclassic like FP would either not be able to touch it, or would only enhance and add to the experience of the story.

I like YARM!

By Rob at 1:22 PM ON 08/30/09

Stone. Go back to your rock quarry & take all YARM with you. You deserve each other.

By Rob at 1:26 PM ON 08/30/09

Strangelove. Nothing is sacred. Everything will be destroyed by YARM before it's over.

Interracial relationships . . .

Would you like to experience interracial romance? Go to ******** mixedmingle.com ********

By Timewyrm at 11:32 AM ON 08/31/09

what does Interracial have to do with this artical

By Virgil's Diner at 11:46 AM ON 08/31/09

3-D will run its course, just as it did in the 50's, but remake mania will likely outlive us all. After all, they've barely touched Hitchcock's catalogue. And how come nobody's gone back and remade Ed Woods' old movies? I'm waiting for somebody to bring Smell-o-Vision back. Now that would get me back into a movie theatre...
