V producer on who might return and other homages

\<i\>V\<\/i\> producer on who might return and other homages

Scott Peters, executive producer of ABC's upcoming V series, confirmed that producers have spoken with Jane Badler, the actress who memorably played the evil alien leader Diana in Kenneth Johnson's original V miniseries, on which the new show is based, about possibly playing a role in the new series.

"Jane Badler has approached our producers and has been in touch here and there," Peters (The 4400) said in an exclusive interview over the weekend at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif.

Badler is one of the original cast members whom the producers are considering putting in the new show as an homage and tip of the hat, Peters said. "And I haven't had a chance to actually sit down or talk to anybody face to face, but I would love to," Peters said about the original stars, who include Marc Singer and Faye Grant. "And as we move forward in the writers' room, ... we're just getting up on our ... feet. We start shooting Monday [Aug. 10], and so once we sort of get that first one under our belts, I think we'll be able to take a bit of a sigh of relief and really sort of look a little bit more broad stroke, a little bit more big picture. ... I don't want somebody to just walk by in the background and then feature them for a second. ... I want to find a really interesting role for somebody."

That might include role that are 180 degrees different from the parts they played in the 1983 miniseries. "Yeah," Peters said. "I mean, just somebody who can come in, and ... it's either a really ironic role for them, based on what their old role was, or just something really fun or interesting. I want them to have fun doing it. I want the fans to be excited about it. And I think it's just a fun thing to be able to tip your hat to the old show."

The new V is a re-imagining of the original miniseries, about the world's first encounter with an alien race, in which the aliens call themselves the Visitors and have a seemingly friendly agenda that may or may not be a cover for something more malevolent. The new show stars Elizabeth Mitchell as Erica Evans, Morris Chestnut as Ryan Nichols, Joel Gretsch as Father Jack Landry, Lourdes Benedicto as Valerie Stevens, Logan Huffman as Tyler Evans and Laura Vandervoort as Lisa, with Morena Baccarin as Anna and Scott Wolf as Chad Decker.

Peters also promised that the new series will nod to the original in other ways as well, though it tells a new story in the present day with new characters and new situations. (Possible spoilers ahead!)

Jane Badler and an unfortunate guinea pig

"Whenever we would audition actors or bring writers in to ... interviews, ... we would ask, 'What do you remember of the show? What's like the big [thing]?' And the big things were the huge ships, the red uniforms, ... eating the hamster and [the] alien baby. You know, universally, that was what everyone came up with. It was like our top four or five. So definitely, we are well aware of those moments and looking to put our own little spin on them to tip our hat to the old audience."

What about the famous reveal of the Visitor's face ripped away to reveal that lizard countenance?

"That was the other one, of course," he said, adding: "We tried to put our own [spin on it]. We're ... a little bit different than their execution of it. It wasn't so much latex mask as it is real flesh and blood."

V will premiere Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

I won't be returning to this drek YARM.
i am so sick of remakes i swear i will stay away from every one of them as a boycott.
i want new and intelligent scifi not rehashed old shows.

By Shaun at 8:12 AM ON 08/11/09

i am all for a remake when it improves on the original, just as bsg did. i will certainly give this one a chance.

By vtheoriginal at 8:25 AM ON 08/11/09

"improve" on the original? not likely! the original miniseries was near perfection and already I see a watering down off the V concept in this new show (calling then the "V's"!!! how uncomfortable is that!)... oh, and einstein- the rodent Jane is swallowing is a GUINEA PIG not a hamster!

the ONLY thing I am interested in is a short-term success to help push along Kenneth Johnson's V movie remake (rumoured to be chugging along)... if there is any magic in this new show, I'm still waiting to see a glimmer of it...

By baron_elric at 8:57 AM ON 08/11/09

I hated the original mini-series and never watched the show that followed. If not for the glorious re-creation of Battlestar Galactica I would not watch a remake of V unless I was being paid. As it is, I will probably try one episode. Much as I like Baccarin and Tudyk, if the script stinks as badly as the original did, I will not be returning.

By Kyrin at 9:19 AM ON 08/11/09

The original was perfection? Good lord, no it wasn't - it was awful. I pray this works like BSG did in the re-imagining, taking schlock and making it great.

By G0M3r at 9:19 AM ON 08/11/09

Near perfection? LOL!!! I think you are looking at the original through rose colored nostalgia lenses. It was good series don't get me wrong but it certainly could be improved upon. Quit looking to the past and look ahead.

By GotsDaSyfyDownLow at 9:38 AM ON 08/11/09

I have no problem with a remake as long as it's done well, i.e. BSG. I just sat through rewatching the entire series, then for nostalgia's sake, watched the original BSG pilot. It was almost unbearable, and I loved that show as a kid! The new one was so much better. "V" will have some big shoes to fill if they want to be another BSG, but I have high hopes.

By Kyle Nin at 10:12 AM ON 08/11/09

""Improve" on the original? Not likely! The original miniseries was near perfection and already I see a watering down off the V concept in this new show."

Okay, then "improve" on the original TV series. I've watched it and it's really easy to do.

"I hated the original mini-series and never watched the show that followed."

Good idea. The original TV series was cheap and campy. I'm hoping this new one is the opposite.

By thurn003 at 10:35 AM ON 08/11/09

I have cuaght the commercial for the new V and it looks like it will be as good as the origanal perhaps even better which was ahead of it times for the 80's style of television, though the original was a little campy it was still really good and cool.

By Arioch Morningstar at 11:57 AM ON 08/11/09

I'll be checking this out, assuming they're smart enough to sell it on iTunes, or at least Hulu it. Otherwise I guess I'll be waiting for Netflix. I don't bother with network TV anymore. Too many ads.

I'm excited to see what they do with it. And when they mentioned old actors playing contrary roles, I thought immediately of Richard Hatch on BSG. So let's give them a break and see what they come up. They've got the cast. The trailer looks awesome. It *might* be as good as early BSG was, before they blew it.

By wraithfodder42 at 12:02 PM ON 08/11/09

The "V" miniseries was fantastic. The NBC series went downhill faster than a greased pig down a slide. So, I can't see this new series as anything but an improvement. However, they gotta get Michael Ironside on it! Somehow!

By Sithboy at 12:34 PM ON 08/11/09

Seriously, I loved the original miniseries too (when I was 10!) but anyone who thinks it was "perfection" needs only to watch the clip here of Jane Badler opening her mouth, someone putting a guinea pig into a ROBOT, and then Jane Badler closing her mouth. I'm willing to give Hollywood some wiggle room when it comes to all these remakes, if only because they're playing with the CGI technologies that weren't available in the 80's. Everything gets a new, slicker, more realistic look, and Hollywood gets these remakes out of their system. But, once everything has been remade digitally, they better be done.

This show is my genre and I will be supporting it as I do every SCIFI show. I do not remember the original show so it will be new for me. I was not able to watch much TV during the original broadcast’s time period. I did find that The SCIFI Channel in Australia has (or is) showing the program.

To all you folks that seem to hate anything that is re imagined or updated for the present generation please remember things’ change (new generation of viewers)continually and concepts can connect to a new generation and get new life. The book of Ecclesiastes tells us there is nothing new so coming up with a totally new, never used idea or concept is likely impossible but maybe some of you can in fact do a new original story so the rest of us can watch it. Until then reusing and re imagining existing ideas is all that is available.

Also, thanks to the folks that do this web site and for GOOD work you are doing everyday in keeping us informed and up to date .

By Kevin at 1:16 PM ON 08/11/09

Considering Richard Hatch's stunning turn on BSG as Tom Zarek, I'd think the producers of "V" would give the original stars a hard look for major supporting roles.

Jane Badler as a "power behind the power" would be kind of neat.

By Dave at 4:40 PM ON 08/11/09

"Jane Badler as a "power behind the power" would be kind of neat."

I was thinking the same thing. Jane Badler needs to be the Emperor.

By sadf3454356 at 5:49 PM ON 08/11/09

More V please! The original was AWESOME.
At this point, as much as I HATE remakes, V is
too cool to pass up, even if it is a remake. Please
do bring back as many of the original characters
as possible. Jane Badler rules!

By joesocwork at 7:43 PM ON 08/11/09

I'm okay with the possible role reversals and Jane Badler as maybe even a good guy. I still have a hard time of thinking of ole Willie as Freddy Krueger! :D

By zzbickyzz at 8:29 PM ON 08/11/09

Boycott, damn remakes/reboots, or whatever fancy term people use to not say copy.
The only 'V' I will watch is by Kenneth Johnson period.
Crash & burn ABC.
Bring on 'V' the 2nd Generation Kenneth!!!!!

By Gill Avila at 10:18 PM ON 08/11/09

I enjoyed the original "V" up to when the ship was crashing toward Earth, when, totally deux-ex-machina, the little girl developed mutant glowing powers and landed the ship. My reaction was "That is total bullshit!!!" That's when they lost me completely. I was so damned furious at that cop-out ending!!!

By kev74 at 10:27 PM ON 08/11/09

I think the majority of us saw V when we were kids and everything always seems better at that age. Watch V now and it looks like a cheesy B movie. Having said that I don't remind remakes. Sci-Fi is like pizza, even when it's bad it's good!

By Morden at 10:59 PM ON 08/11/09

I also grew up watching V and I agree with kev74. Could be good. Could be really bad. But hey, they've got Morena Baccarin (SG1, Firefly). That alone is worth giving it a shot for me.

By emrald at 12:05 AM ON 08/12/09

hopefully when they do this mini series or series, they will actually finish it and not leave us hanging when elizabeth walks into the shuttle pod heading for the aliens home world

By Aberzombie at 7:21 AM ON 08/12/09

I enjoyed the original miniseries. The follow-up TV series - not so much. With the improvements in special effects, I can see the appeal of a re-make, but not a re-imagining. The original story was great (although it could use a few tweaks), and I'm afraid a re-imagining would just add in a bunch of PC nonsense. Still, I'll likley watch it. Mmmmm...Morena Baccarin.

By Lizard Lady at 9:55 AM ON 08/12/09

You can see all the original "V" stuff with KJ and the new ABC stuff right on my site at http://www.mindpulse.com/users/lizlady .

Has interviews with the cast and crew, old and new!

By v4victory at 12:14 PM ON 08/12/09

the original mini-series was excellent considering the typical sci-fi show before it- Galactica, Buck rogers and yes Star Trek where all aimed at children. V was the first sci-fi show that took itself seriously, aimed as an adult thriller.
Shows like The X-files, Earth: Final Conflict etc and ofcourse Independence Day all took inspiration from V.
Yes they messed up with The Final Battle and totally screwed up with the weekly series, but at the end of the day (forget the fact we are looking at 80's special effects) the story, characters of the original V still stand up today against anything TV has to offer.
If the new V stays on course and gives us an intelligent adult thriller as the original then this new V will kick the ass of the New Galactica for sure.

By dave at 2:54 PM ON 08/12/09

As a kid I was a huge fan of V, and while I'd love for Kenneth Johnson's sequel see the light of day, the new V seems to be a quality endeavor. I'll render a stronger opinion once I've seen a few episodes, but I feel very positive about it so far.

I'd love to see Ms. Badler return, and as someone said above, it would be a blast if she played a far different role from before. One of the "good guys" this time, perhaps?

By Locke85 at 10:15 PM ON 08/13/09

I grew up watching V. It was one of my sci-fi favorites because of its character development, political and social issues, and parallels to real world events. This new series looks interesting, however I'm a bit disappointed that WB didn't pick up Kenneth Johnson's sequel. I think a sequel would be moving forward more so than a remake. Think about it - a remake is starting from scratch. Why not build off of what you already have than tear it down and start from scratch? That's what also ruined the new Star Trek movie - it erased everything that has happened already. Erasing the past is NOT moving forward, it is going backwards.

What will save this series for die hard "V" fans if they do bring back old cast members is if those cast members reprise their character roles from the original series, just dropped into the present time. Otherwise leave them out of it and do the V: The Second Generation Motion Picture (the only problem being it will confuse the heck out of fans of the new series).

By IsoTek at 5:21 PM ON 08/15/09

I don't care what the haters say. I will be watching. If there is room for a remake of Galactica then there should be room for this. Besides I need a better impression of the franchise that killed itself with a soap-operaish series that was nothing more than a pale attempt to beat DALLAS.

By V Purist at 12:58 PM ON 10/13/09

Totall and utter drek indeed, if you are going as a writer of 3 V movies of the week they got shelved in 1995 because of a shakeup when les moonves left warner bros for cbs. I am throughly shocked as this Re-Imagining. Why must we reimagine everything. Somethings do not need to be improved upon, merely expanded upon. When the new bsg came out I wasnt happy with it, new orgins for cylons, etc, but by the end of the last season its stood on it own for many reasons music, production design etc. I dont see that to be the case here with this new 'V' the calling them the V's how tright is that.. very mondane uniforms for a new friends, nothign to make them standout or set them apart from us, no light sensitivity, no broken language, wonder if there will be a willy? Looks like mike donavan is a priest not a reporter. What made the original so classic was it pararells to nazi occupation, smartly dressed solders, youth corps, promis for a better tommorow. If they make this into a series. It will mean the end to any future development of the classic V genre. Red & white are a iconic images, cold gunmetal plating in boring and uninspiring. I will give this show its do as I did BSG. but it will never replace the orignal V.

By tmc at 7:15 AM ON 11/03/09

NOT HAPPY

Just saw the promo in Australia...Where is Diana, Julie, Mike???? "What the" I am not happy why did they not pick up where it left off ???? "Silly" I hope it bombs then maybe they will get the hint.....if you bring back V then you need to include the winning formula.......not make it look newer..... I would like V to come back, but unless Jane is playing Diana, Faye Julie, Marc Mike..then not interested ..bring on KJ he knows the winning formula...

I really think Jane Badler should have a starring role in the new V episodes. She hasn't yet lost her bloom, although she's 56 years old. She's still a very, very beautiful woman. I'd love to see her on this new show!
