Warner developing remake of Sean Connery's Outland

Warner developing remake of Sean Connery\'s \<i\>Outland\<\/i\>

We have a soft spot in our hearts for Outland, the 1981 Sean Connery outer-space western loosely modeled on High Noon, so it comes as good news that Warner Brothers and Hollywood Gang Productions are developing a remake.

Shoot 'Em Up director Michael Davis will oversee the update, suggesting a more dynamic and action-packed version.

Variety reports:

Chad St. John, who scripted WB drama The Days Before, will pen the redo.

The drama revolves around a police marshal stationed at a remote mining colony on Jupiter's moon Io, where he uncovers a murderous conspiracy threatening the entire Outland with collapse.

The new version will reportedly expand the "space frontier" concept of the original.

Not that the original was haute SF, but it was a pretty fun little yarn in the workaday-industrial milieu first established in Alien. Amping it up, though; is that really necessary? I'd rather see new versions of failed projects that still have potential, like The Black Hole, or even Singer's new take on the old Battlestar.

I agree with DarkHawke...this movie is still relevant and worth rewatching in its original version today. Why "fix" something that is a classic?

By Anachronite at 9:55 AM ON 08/19/09

Again an example of Hollywood's complete lack of creativity or willingness to try something new. We've seen the movie, love it, but don't need a remake.

If you can;t come up with an original story, there's 1000's of great novels ripe for adapting. But we don't remakes of movies we've already seen.

Hollywood is striken with the Cranial Rectal Inversion Syndrome Plague. It's getting to the point where it is laughable,

Please do not remake something that stands on its own. The day the remake on the "Day the Earth stood Still" was worth a Netflix viewing, but the original told the story fine.

I just do not understand why Hollywood has to redo everything. Maybe they should give less money to Washington and pay to writers to encourage originality.

"more dynamic and action-packed version" (read: less plot, more BOOM-BOOM)

Ugh! No Connery, no dice!!

"...this movie is still relevant and worth rewatching in its original version today. Why "fix" something that is a classic?"

Because Hollywood is creatively bankrupt.

By Clinton at 11:04 AM ON 08/19/09

I wouldn't call this "loosely modeled." I'd say it was pretty close to the original "High Noon," right down to the clock.

By LrdBowler at 11:08 AM ON 08/19/09

I love this movie, and it does still hold up.

A remake could be good with today's affects. It would be great if they can get Sean Connery to play the aging Marshall being replaced in the beginning of the film, sort of a passing-of-the torch.

I hope the keep close to the feel of the original movie.

Shoot-em-up wasn't that great a film, so I have my doubts.

Harlan Ellison wrote a SCATHING review of this film saying the 'High Noon in space' was A) a TERRIBLE rip-off of the original film and B) made NO SENSE HERE. I agree with him on both points. This was an awful film. Good score by J. Goldsmith, though.

By Syberis at 11:20 AM ON 08/19/09

Some remakes just don't need to be done. This is certainly one of them. How can you improve on Francis Sternhagen as the cranky doctor? She was great. One remake I'm glad didn't happen was the proposed redo of "Escape From New York" with Gerard Butler. How could they possibly improve the original.

By MJPollard at 12:13 PM ON 08/19/09

I don't mind remakes if they can do something fresh with the concept or if the original just can't hold up today, but some films just don't need updating. "Halloween," "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "Rollerball," the list goes on. "Outland" itself is "'High Noon' in space" and still holds up well; what more could they do besides update the effects? (And I can see very few people able to replace the gruff Connery and cranky Sternhagen.)

(Films that could stand to be remade? "When Worlds Collide" and "Logan's Run." I'd love to see a take on LR that's more faithful to the Nolan/Johnson novel!)

That said, I wonder if they will retain the "bodies explode in a vacuum" thing. Sure, it's completely inaccurate scientifically, but it's part of the original's cheesy charm. :-)

Why does Hollywood continue remaking everything in sight, especially as these remakes are almost never a success (critically or financially)?

There is no lack of original, quality, commercially-viable material (books, anime, graphic novels).

And obviously money is not a problem - "District 9"'s budget was just $30 million I understand, a fraction of the "The Day The Earth Stood Still" remake's cost I imagine.

I am the creator of YARM yet another remake/reboot.
i have no intentions on going near this drek and will love my original even though it borrowed from the great high noon western film.

after the BSG series i made the decision to never ever watch another remake/reboot.i have better things to do weith my life.
and i now am doing a serious boycott of all these lame corporate studios by not buying any new films but only used ones.
hollywood is getting nowhere with me except for really pissing me off.their asshole YARM and the cancelling of fave shows have finally hit home with me.i hit you backl in your pocketbook with loss of sales.

oh and i remind all of you to never buy new music from any artist/label who signs with the RIAA.

By KerrAvon at 5:38 PM ON 08/19/09

I loved this movie. The best part was how people's heads would blow up when they were exposed to outer space and no oxygen. Unrealistic, but really cool.

By hermy at 8:29 PM ON 08/19/09

W.T.F with all these remakes of movies that were good to begin with.why don't they remake a crappy movie and make it better

By scififan66 at 8:39 PM ON 08/19/09

I loved this movie back in the 80's, and I still do. I watched it just a few months ago and it is still as entertaining as ever. No need for a remake. I agree that a remake of Logan's Run could be interesting, and I recall hearing that one was in the works a couple of years ago but nothing happened. Oh well. Just throwing my 2 cents in.

By RGKahn at 9:52 PM ON 08/19/09

Loved the original movie, looking foreword to new version, depending who is in it etc.

By Simon Baylor at 10:11 PM ON 08/19/09

Outland is a classic and it should not be remade.

By AngryJonny at 10:34 PM ON 08/19/09

Not that the original film is at all bad -- it's one of my favorites -- but if they're so reboot crazy, why not finally do Conan the Barbarian?

By Simon Baylor at 10:40 PM ON 08/19/09

There are so many great science fiction and fantasy books that would make great movies. And yet, all the movie companies give us are reboots of movies and rehashes if old television series. Its sickening

By Horrid at 11:52 PM ON 08/19/09

Excellent Scifi Western ... get Sean Connery to cameo the Peter Boyle character ... he loves golf...

By Moravec at 8:50 AM ON 08/20/09

It comes as good news to Scifi that Warner Brothers and Hollywood Gang Productions are developing a remake of Outland?

Figures.
