Jimmy Bennett, the 13-year-old actor who played the youthful miscreant James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, said that the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release will contain deleted footage that clarifies a few things about his early scenes, in which he steals his stepdad's Corvette and drives it off a cliff.
"There was a part that was a little confusing," Bennett said in a group interview over the weekend in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting Shorts. "The kid that I waved to when I was driving was actually my brother, and I wish that they would have [included] that scene. Because people were like, 'Who was that kid that you were waving to?'"
Paramount Home Entertainment will release Star Trek on DVD and Blu-ray on Nov. 17 in sets with more extras than Trek has tribbles. In addition to commentaries, featurettes and a BD-Live feature that allows viewers to track NASA news about space exploration, there are at least nine deleted scenes.
Abrams didn't invent Kirk's brother, of course: The final episode of the original Star Trek's first season, "Operation Annihilate!" featured a Kirk sibling named Sam, who dies before we learn any relevant information about him. StarTrek.com lists the brother's formal name as "George Samuel," apparently after Kirk's father, George.
Bennett said that Abrams also shot a scene that involved Kirk's uncle Frank, played by Brad William Henke, which leads up to the sequence with the stolen car in the film and the character's momentary on-screen acknowledgement of his brother. "They ended up cutting out a scene where my brother runs away and I get in a fight with my uncle," Bennett said.
"I end up taking his car," Bennett continued. "Because I was washing it or whatever, and I find the keys in the mirror, and I put it in the ignition, and I just take off. Then that's how my uncle calls my mom, so that's kind of how that worked."
By the time the final cut of the film hit theaters, "Uncle Frank" had transformed into a stepdad voiced (on a car speakerphone) by Greg Grunberg. At least that's how we think it played out.

The car scene as shown in the trailer is one of the major reasons I avoided the movie.

I don't know. I think 13-year-old Kirk delivered a far better performance than 20-something Kirk, who came off as a fratboy brat who was ridiculously given permanent command of a starship.
In what version of common sense does it seem logical that the more experienced Spock should be passed over for this version of Kirk?
The best moments of the new Trek were of everyone other than bratty Kirk.
Let the mayhem and name-calling begin!
By mlhershb at 8:45 AM ON 08/12/09
So what got cut that explains why the Grand Canyon is in Iowa?
By Thomas at 8:51 AM ON 08/12/09
River: I had similar problems with the way the role was played out. The kobayashi maru sequence could have been played out much more elegantly than the raw cheap hack job it was. Plus, I fully expected Pike to be given his ship back at the end, with Spock his 1st officer, with Kirk sent back to complete his 1st classman year, then assigned to another ship, along with a guy named Gary Mitchell...but alas, I was disappointed.
By blackwolf at 9:01 AM ON 08/12/09
that movie was very very bad but i will have to say that i gave a chance i wont waste my on the sequel
By UnRiel at 12:16 PM ON 08/12/09
I allow all the anomalies to the fact that Kirk was not raised by his father who was killed in this new reality the day he was born by Nero's ship. This would change anyone's forming years. Now Kirk is even more driven to prove himself with brash, frat-boy actions. So even our expectation of the Kobayashi Maru would change in the new timeline. For me this is a way to more easily enjoy an entertaining re-imagining than to pick it apart.
By tjwalsh65 at 12:20 PM ON 08/12/09
Gary Mitchell is the person I most want to see in the new Universe. Watching the original series he was several years behind Kirk. I also think Kirk is an Upper Classman at the time of the movie.

i agree with UNRIEL. i've seen all the star trek franchises and love them all. this is just another well done story (fiction) that should be taken as is (fiction). plausibility and reality are not what this movie is (fiction). i can't wait for the next installment (fiction)..

By SamusMaXximus at 1:05 PM ON 08/12/09
Hahahaha Paul. Good choice on avoiding a great movie because of a scene that takes about 30 seconds. You rock man.
By Krelm at 1:57 PM ON 08/12/09
That was not the Grand Canyon in Iowa. I believe it was part of the swath of destruction caused by the Xindi. There were a couple of signs as Kirk broke through the gate. This was one of the tie-ins to previous series (as well as mentioning Admiral Archer’s prize beagle). I just hope they don't keep giving rank out like candy. You can have a low rank and still be a captain of a vessel. The rank of Captain (0-6) denotes at least 12 years of Military experience and Command Officer training. But it is Sci-fi so maybe they do things differently in the future. Over all I enjoyed the movie and am looking forward for a sequel.

How many people have 100 year old cars as well. Both things were a stretch.
By wake_up at 3:24 PM ON 08/12/09
It wasn't a canyon at all in iowa - it was a quarry. In other words, it was as flat as the rest of Iowa until they started cutting it up for stone. You can see the rock-cutting lines in the film, if you're paying attention.
And let's not forget that Kirk, despite being a "frat boy," was able to complete the four-year Starfleet Academy program in three years, which means he was absolutely brilliant. They just don't show scenes of Kirk studying because people don't go to movies to see the heroes of the movie reading books for half an hour.

1- How does he know how to drive the car?
At this time it’s more like two hundred years old. there are people now who can’t drive manual transmission cars. Yet a 13 year old boy who grew up in an age in which these kind of cars are obsolete not only can drive a manual transmission car, he can drive a high performance manual drive sports car like a professional. And don’t tell me it’s because he’s smart. That kind of driving takes years of experience.
2- Where did the fuel come from?
Does this step father keep a supply of gasoline handy. Gas evaporates. Which means it has to be re-supplied, which means that somebody is still producing it, in the twenty third century!?
When gasoline driven engines are obsolete?
3- Even if he had gasoline I would think that a vehicle that emits poison fumes from it’s exhaust would be at least restricted if not outright illegal in that time.
4- It’s a two hundred year old priceless antique. Why is there only one police man chasing him? I’d have had the entire force after the little delinquent.
5- Kirk grew up in this area yet he didn’t know there was an abandoned quarry there? Even if he didn’t could he not read the warning signs that were on the big giant fence designed to keep people out?
I am as far from a professional script writer as you can get. If I could spot these things why couldn’t they and if they had explanations for all these things they should have left them in the movie. Just having young Kirk steal a car and drive it fast because it’s COOL, is ridiculous.

Hi I'm updating this from another page because Abrams Must Be stopped. Please don't add insult to the injury that was Abrams Reboot. I saw enough.
Greeting and felicitations one and all. I'm Back. I broke down went to the buck a movie theater and watched Abrams "Star Trek" I know even before the movie came out I was bad mouthing it, making fun of it and in general trashing it at every chance i got. Some people even got a little up set with me about what I said not even seeing the movie. Well as I said I did go see it today. And I have to admit after seeing it ..... I was sooooooo Right. It was god awful! it stank like a three day old beached wail. I thought it was going to be bad and a little off. I was way wrong. Face to face It would take me longer to tell you what was wrong and incorrect in that movie then the movie itself. Alternate universe? Folks when you get something altered (Like a suit)They make little changes to make it fit. THis was like Altering a suit coat into a pair of pants. Since when was starfleet ships Pipes and catwalks? I know some people Liked it and if you did More power to you. But it Wasn't Star Trek It just wasn't. Galaxy Quest was a more accurate star trek movie. I really want to sue JJ Abrams for $1 for the two hour mind rape. I feel dumber having seen that movie. Not only did i lose some self respect watching it, but i felt like i needed a shower after, I felt dirty and unclean. THe nice thing is No matter what the next Movie can only get better. Poor Porthose floating around as disembodied atoms, Even though he would of been dead for 135 Years it's still sad. By thw way on my way out I gave the ticket guy $5 not to let the next person in. It was well worth it to me.

Oh captain, my captain, thank you for making this so very clear for all of us. Now I don't have to watch this at all.
Nuts to that, the day I take advice from someone who mangles the English language in such a fashion, well, that day just won't come. And it's almost funny to see people get so riled up on what is, at the end of the day, a matter of personal tastes. Which is pretty damn futile to discuss. I, for one, am looking forward to Star Trek on DVD (Yes, I missed it at the cinema, not by choice.)

It just means he took summer classes!
By NathanBrazil at 8:03 PM ON 08/12/09
Spaceman Spiff-You are correct that there are lots of things to nitpick in this film. Unfortunately you did not pick them well in this post. For every one of your complaints I can come up with a valid as any other explanation:
1- How does he know how to drive the car?
**This is not a true hole. Who knows, maybe up until recently he had a better relationship with his Uncle and he taught him over time. We can assume these vehicles are no longer part of the vehicle code and something his Uncle keeps as an antique. Maybe he taught James in the desert somewhere to bond with him. Who knows, but not impossible.
2- Where did the fuel come from?
**Hard to say. Maybe there is another use for gasoline so he can still get it. More likely the engine is modified to run on some sort of biofuel.
3- Even if he had gasoline I would think that a vehicle that emits poison fumes from it’s exhaust would be at least restricted if not outright illegal in that time.
**See explanation above. It might not be running on gasoline, or maybe he has it fitted with the needed hardware to make it legal.
4- It’s a two hundred year old priceless antique. Why is there only one police man chasing him? I’d have had the entire force after the little delinquent.
**Silly. Looks like the officer just came upon him. Others might well be on the way. Or the officer said "It's some punk kid in an old car. I will deal with it."
5- Kirk grew up in this area yet he didn’t know there was an abandoned quarry there?
**Who's to say he did not know. Likely he drove there on purpose to ruin the car. He just did not think out the whole 'getting out of the car' thing after he was under police chase.
You see, these are silly nitpicks. You want a HOLE? How does it take mere minutes to get to Vulcan, but appearantly several hours (at least) after Kirk is left on the ice planet the enterprise is still within transporter range? And just where IS the rest of the fleet that they are so far away that they cannot get back to aide in the film when we have just seen how fast the Enterprise got to Vulcan? THAT is a hole.
That said, I still enjoyed the film. A lot.
By hockeyfan at 11:03 PM ON 08/12/09
You people are unreal, The Planet Vulcan gets blown to pieces so that this guy can redo decades worth of stuff and the only complaints I hear are about a car, a canyon, and some complaining about the shape of vulcan ears!?! So what if someone owned a car in the future. As for the canyon that was a little strange but there is a fault line across Iowa that has never cause an earth quake yet but maybe the movie implies that it eventually does causing the canyon. You people take this waaay too seriously. Enjoy the story for what it is. A STORY!!! I had problems with a few things in the movie but as far as I'm concerned it was a good action movie, but that was it was.

Not nit-picking at all, Spiff. I am from the 29th century, and have obtained a waiver of the Temporal Prime Directive, permitting me to respond to your queries.
1- How does he know how to drive the car?
ANSWER: Super Mario Kart.
2- Where did the fuel come from?
ANSWER: The 20th century internal combustion engine had been replaced with a matter/anti-matter chamber and flux capacitor turbo overdrive. See Car & Driver, May 2237.
3- Even if he had gasoline I would think that a vehicle that emits poison fumes from it’s exhaust would be at least restricted if not outright illegal in that time.
ANSWER: True. The traffic citation scene was deleted, but will appear on the Blu-Ray disc.
4- It’s a two hundred year old priceless antique. Why is there only one police man chasing him? I’d have had the entire force after the little delinquent.
ANSWER: Not an antique. 23rd century eBay is loaded with counterfeit Corvettes made using grey-market replicated parts.
5- Kirk grew up in this area yet he didn’t know there was an abandoned quarry there? Even if he didn’t could he not read the warning signs that were on the big giant fence designed to keep people out?
ANSWER: Jim Kirk doesn’t like to lose.
By Darcwalker at 1:09 AM ON 08/13/09
I can see why Kirk was given command of the enterprise. During the original series i think star fleet was like between 12 and 25 ships at the most. It looks like more than half of them and there experienced captains kinda got blown up. SO kirk becomes the most combat experienced officer in the fleet of probably now is like 5 or 6 ships. That and Spock prime probably said do it or i wont give you any future tech.

NathanBrazil:
Those are pretty good speculations, But that’s exactly what they are speculations. However,
Knowing how to drive a car. Yeas I thought about the fact he may have been taught. But they way he drives that car would take more than 12 years to learn.
If he was intending to destroy the car on purpose then he should have been sent to juvey or the 23rd century equivalent. That’s another thing we never see the consequences of his theft.
My point is these issues are never addressed in the movie. They are simply there and we have to except them. Things happen in this movie ’just
because’. And you’re right, the hole you pointed out is a big one.
I could make a very long list of plot holes but I tried to stick with the subject of this article.
And Hockeyfan,
Yes we know it’s a STORY. It just happens to be a piss poor story.

My big question to all you "Purists" is if you didn't like it or even anticipated not liking it WHY ON GODS EARTH DID YOU SHELL OUT $10 TO SEE IT?????
By Son of a Maui Portagee at 8:05 PM ON 08/14/09
@CATM
You assume too much. ST is now at the end of its run and in the dollar venues.
I, myself, paid $6 to see it. The projector broke down and extremely lost sound sync after the wanton destruction of the sinking ship, Narada.
The manager gave me two unrestricted passes which I used to attend a much more expensive premier showing of another picture which claimed passes would not be accepted but mine were apparently gold because my party got in.
So by your reckoning I got paid 4 times over to see it.
But you'll probably still whine that I'm ungrateful because while I found it had some merit as yet another Nimoy B-motion picture ( a sub-genre that I have a soft spot for.), I didn't find its narrative compelling Trek.
I also wasn't happy that it was rated PG-13 unlike any other Trek before. Especially considering that many of my Trek parent peers felt compelled to expose their under13yo children to it merely because it was labeled "Star Trek". Not because I'm some sort of prude but because I felt the construction of the narrative didn't warrant the exposure. It simply wasn't the best of Trek storytelling. Be clear: I'm not judging their parenting skills as they know best how to quide their children, but I have doubts about their choice of Trek for an introduction.
I am grateful to this production because I believe that it convinced a lot in my Trek circle of my contention that another production and cast can do credible Trek characterizations of the founding icons (You can probably imagine how raucous that always was.). The only trouble is ST09 could not find anything credible for them to say with regards to plot and narrative - and that lack is the earmark of good B-movies, i.e. strong in characterizations but lacking in plot..
This movie has more in common with its writers' other opus, TRANSFORMERS:REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, than the best of movie Trek.
Roger Ebert was right.

CATM;
~~My big question to all you "Purists" is if you didn't like it or even anticipated not liking it WHY ON GODS EARTH DID YOU SHELL OUT $10 TO SEE IT?????~~
I find it hard to believe that anyone even asked this question. If you'll think for just a minute CATM the answer will come to you. I'll wait............No? Ok then, It works like this. the trailer is only a very small portion of the film. Although it can often be a very good gauge of what the movie is going to be like. I found out more by reading various articles on various websites. Enough to know that I PROBABLY wouldn't like it. probably being the operative word. But, if I am going to diss a movie then I feel like should see said movie so I can know what it is I'm dissing. It's more honest that way as well.
So I went to see it with reservations but also at least a little hope that the bits in the trailer would be very small exceptions. Alas my hopes were sorely disapointed but my fears were justified. The movie was stinker. As a film and even more so as Star Trek.
It was only seven dollars here and my son paid my way, so it cost me nothing.
By wildbuf at 7:23 PM ON 08/15/09
Corvette = 300 years old
Admiral Archer = circa 170 years old.
Most WWII American submarine Captains, after the first year, were Lt. Commanders. By the end of the war many had less than ten years service. Young and aggressive, high losses and lots of new boats were all factors. Just a littler reminder of ST's roots.

Reply to the comment that young Kirk should have know the area and at least watched the signs...When I was learning to ride my first motorcycle I was practicing near my home. I drove beyond my usual bounds and had litterally forgotten about the dead man's curve. I went off the road got 4 stitches. Signs? When things are happening fast you sometimes don't see them. There was a lesson in that. Did the adult Kirk learn it???
