It looks like Deputy Lupo will be patrolling Eureka for a long time to come: Syfy just renewed its hit series for a fourth season, right in the midst of season three, and no one is happier about the turn of events than Erica Cerra, who plays the show's tough, gun-loving cop.
"We were thrilled, and more so that it's 22 episodes," Cerra said last week in an exclusive telephone interview. "Last year they made an attempt to do 21, I believe it was, and we got cut down to 18 because of the writers' strike. So we're thrilled, and the way we found out was so much fun, getting word before the end of the season. You're usually waiting until much later [to get word of renewal or cancellation]. I love working on this show, and we have a really great cast and crew, and we've got a good thing going. It's nice."
Cerra said that she has no idea what the future will hold for Lupo, but she did drop a nugget of news that should be of interest to fans who, ahem, tune in to Eureka on a regular basis. "We're doing a musical episode—well, a two-part musical episode—next season," she said. "That will be very, very, very interesting. I have no idea what that will be about. I suppose the network and the writers feel comfortable with the fact that the cast can sing."
Laughing, Cerra added, "I know that Joe Morton has an amazing [voice]. I've heard Salli [Richardson-Whitfield] sing. Colin [Ferguson] has a fun voice. Niall [Matter], I don't think, can sing. And I don't sing. I can't, and I don't, so I'm going to have to take some singing lessons. I'm a little nervous. It's a little bit of pressure for people who don't, but I know that everyone's excited."
Eureka airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Great show this season. Not thrilled about a musical episode. Especially a two-part episode. Keep plugging gadgets that make the world better - they're usually hilarious and give us something to shoot for in real life.

I can't *wait* for a musical episode! Of *course* Joe Morton has a great voice! Are there any talents he *doesn't* have? And... what does Colin's "fun voice" sound like? Will it frighten my cat?

". . . no one is happier about the turn of events than Erica Cerra"
"turn of events"?
Was it supposedly heading toward cancellation? I hadn't heard that.

My wife and I think this is one of the best shows on TV... not too serious, not too over-the-top... I doubt they could do anything that would "jump the shark", I think every episode already does. Looking forward to season 4!

Love the show, but PLEASE no musical!

Sounds like they are starting to steal ideas from "BUFFY the VAMPIRE SLAYER". Oh well, play it save Hollywierd.

Much as I love the Buffy musical episode, it wasn't the first or only musical episode to hit television. Music has gone with acting for centuries, long before the movie musical. On TV, there have been a bunch, from Buffy, to Xena (I hear), Scrubs, Glee, Cop Rock, and so on. I just hope they write original music. It always seems half-a$$ed when they try doing a musical with pre-existing songs wedged into the stories. One of the many, many, many reasons I can't stand Moulin Rouge (2001).
Eureka has a great cast. Something that is essential to pulling off a musical TV episode. Should be fun.

Recent fan of the show but I adore it. Gimme more I say. And the episodes have been so fun I even trust them with a musical episode.

Just a reminder. The house that Carter lives in is named after Buffy herself -- Sarah. So some of the Producers are fans of Joss, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I like Erica Cerra. I liked her when I first saw her on BSG as Maya, and I was sad when see got killed off in it. I liked her recent work in Warehouse 13. And I love her in Eureka!

While I don't know how many of them are notable, Me, there are other Sarahs in the world besides Sarah Michelle Gellar. That chick who married Ferris Bueller, for example, is apparently pretty famous.
I'm not dreading a Eureka musical episode the way I would dread, say, a musical episode on one of the Stargates. It's not exactly a stretch to think the writers will come up with some device meant to cause insanity in enemy combatants might accidentally make everyone in town break into song, like Buffy's "dancing demon", and it'll seem funny but harmless until the insanity kicks in and people start getting dead. I think Warehouse 13 could eventually do one as well, for the same reason except naturally it would be some never-before-mentioned artifact. Series with built-in Macguffins seem custom-built for this sort of thing.

Sounds great. The best show on the network can only gonna get better with a musical. :)

The show is "okay," but the science is terrible. To have any more than casual appeal, it needs to follow known scientific principles. Nature is wonderful enough without basing whole shows on "dumb science." Do us all a favor.
By Mr.Hyde at 4:09 PM ON 08/28/09
Sigh... this so cliché... Right up there with the " it didnt really happened, it was a dream " episode. Seems to me the musical episodes in all series are more fun to the actors then to the viewers. If I want a musical, i'll watch Moulin Rouge.
By raindog469 at 7:05 PM ON 08/28/09
dnr, why would they care if it has "more than casual appeal" when it's been SFC's top-rated scripted show for a couple of years now, only to be supplanted by the even more fanciful Warehouse 13? SFC hasn't been the channel for geeks for a long time, if ever.

I think this show is one of the best on TV
can't wait to see more of whats coming

I hope that Jamie Ray Newman will be back in season 4 as Tess. I enjoy the chemistry with Jack, and the to-date unacted upon conflict with Allison. Besides, she appears ot be an attractive and smart woman both on and off the screen. When will the web-site photos going to be updated with season 3.5 photos? Especially on of Tess or Jack and Tess together. Alos a new cast shot for wide scrren PSc would be appeciated.

About whether "Sarah" the house is named after Buffy: back in the episode where the house was introduced, Fargo mentioned that he wanted to have Sarah Michelle Gellar come to Eurkea to record the voice for it (but he hadn't been able to do so). So I'd say it is named after her.
By eurekasjrmayor at 7:08 PM ON 08/29/09
so there is going to be two musical episodes, as long as it is done in the eureka style which we all have come to love. If Ericca doesn't sing then whose voice was used in this season's episode when Jo's double sang at the cafe ?
By Joe B. at 1:32 AM ON 08/31/09
It's great that it's renewed, but PLEASE...do away with the stupid split season. You just start getting into the show and then it goes off for six months or so.
By Pixcutter at 8:40 AM ON 08/31/09
A 22 show pickup?!? The numbers for the show must be great. I didn't like the split season, but it gave the writers extra time to come up with better scripts. And I hope Jamie Ray Newman continues.
By Effigy at 10:44 AM ON 08/31/09
"I hope that Jamie Ray Newman will be back in season 4 as Tess. "
That would probably depend on how well her new show on ABC does. Though I think she is signed on to be a reoccuring character, if Eastwich takes off, then I wouldn't expect her to be back for very many episodes.
By Effigy at 10:48 AM ON 08/31/09
Eastwick*

I don't like the Tess character, but really like Zoe...I miss Nathan Stark even though I hated him. I really like his rivalry with Carter. I am glad that I discovered this show and Warehouse 13. Great shows on the syfy channel. Woohoo!
By Ken at 11:40 PM ON 09/11/09
Warehouse 13 is ok, but I really like Eureka and never miss an episode. SyFy if your reading these posts, if you have to pick one to cancel to keep the other, Please keep Eureka, It's the best show on TV right now.
