Robert Zemeckis may remake Yellow Submarine in 3-D

Robert Zemeckis may remake \<em\>Yellow Submarine\<\/em\> in 3-D

Disney and director Robert Zemeckis are negotiating to remake Yellow Submarine, the 1968 psychedelic animated film based on the music of the Beatles, Variety reported.

The studio has been quietly brokering a complicated rights deal that would give Zemeckis access to 16 original Beatles songs for a movie he will direct in the performance-capture 3-D digital production format he employed for A Christmas Carol. Disney opens that film Nov. 6, with Jim Carrey playing Scrooge as well as the three ghosts who haunt him in the Charles Dickens tale.

The hope is to have Yellow Submarine ready to premiere around the 2012 Summer Olympics, which begins July 27 in London.

Stop... with... the... remakes...

By Michael at 9:17 AM ON 08/20/09

Ah, so Robert Zemeckis is a Blue Meanie, then?

By JimmyD at 9:28 AM ON 08/20/09

Ya know... as long as he kept the music and the look. This COULD be something that works in the way that Gus Van Sant 'Psycho' never could.
I'm not for re-makes per say... but...
My only concern is, I'm not a fan of the Zemeckis animation projects.
Maybe if they could 'Nighmare Before Christmas' it and just 3-D enhance some scenes from the original?
I can't think of anything trippier than an IMAX 3-D 'Yellow Submarine'!

Remakes, remakes, remakes.

I used to think some remake cycles were oddly funny. Start with a movie like Little Shop of Horrors. Make it into a musical on Broadway. When the Broadway version hits, remake it into a movie. That worked, so now lets do Hairspray. How about The Producers? If Hollywood plays its cards right they'd never have to come up with an original idea. Think of the money that could be saved.

Oh boy! Does this mean we’ll have the 3D versions of Jim Carrey and Tom Hanks playing John Lennon & Paul MacCartney? Gee, I can hardly wait.

Why? Chalk up another one to the complete lack of creativity among big US movie makers. Seems only independents can come up with original ideas these days. Sad.

If this happens, I really hope they use the original Beatle voices. Remaster the original recordings, and make sure it's actually the Beatles talking. If they were to get voice actors to play any of them, it would be a travesty.

Is Zemeckis ever going to make another movie with actual people in it again?

By Jim Whatever at 10:50 AM ON 08/20/09

No no! Hands off the "Submarine"!

By Jeffery2010 at 10:58 AM ON 08/20/09

Actually... The Beatles did not do the original voices. They had 4 actors (then 3 when one was arrested for possesion so one did double duty). The Beatles had nothing to do with the movie 'cept for the cameo at the end. That being said... I loved Yellow Submarine and can't image any, any, any reason to redo it. Very bad idea.

Wow. Well, I am sure there are many projects out there... creative and new projects... that would benefit greatly from being made at least once. And I don't quite like the idea of the man who brought us the Back to the Future films, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Forrest Gump falling back on old material... but this may be okay if they can use the original Beatles song recordings. But wow. Ugh. Yes, I'm going with ugh.

I’ve already started on my Christmas Wish List……
Please someone have an original idea.

By gorehound696 at 4:50 PM ON 08/20/09

if you want to stop all this krap YARM then you must boycott hollywood like i do.
1.do not pay for theater movies
2.do not buy any new dvd's

and do not forget to all boycott any label/artist who signs with the RIAA as well.

make sure your money is never going towards the raping of someone else's ideas.

Y'know, re-doing a film that was a product of free love, psychedelic drugs, and a band in which fully half of the members are dead might not be too bad. Make it 3-D, and how can it fail?

Then again, someone thought George Clooney would have made a good Batman. Go figure.

Stop it. Stop it. Stop it. STOP IT! The remake tsunami has GOT to freakin' stop, already.

Even if you buy into this trend, there are certain properties that lend themselves to being reimagined, and certain ones that simply don't. For cryin' out loud, this movie is an iconic representation of its time, and should be left as such. Any attempt by Zemeckis to reproduce this kind of magic with his motion-capture zombies is bound to be about as well received as anyone (other than a VERY talented few) trying to re-record classic Beatles songs. Honestly, if anyone were going to try to get some sort of Beatles movie up on the big screen, my first vote would be for whomever put together the cinematic trailer for RockBand. Fantastic stuff, that.

SciFi Wire (not SyFyWire.com?) could save us all some time by automatically adding our regular comments to these articles about ignorant and creatively bankrupt companies remaking movies that were just fine/perfect the first time, thank you very much.

I mean how many remakes have been discussed here recently? Every one of them has been blasted as a waste of money and effort...

By Horrid at 10:52 PM ON 08/20/09

Well you almost had me there ... I was instantly taken in buy by LOVE for all things Beatles ... but since when was Yellow Submarine ever classed as Scifi ... you dunderheads!!!

By WannaBeatle at 2:42 AM ON 08/21/09

I think I have to put in my two cents here on this one for sure.

I've been hearing about this for a short while now. Let's see if it's just a rumor started by Apple or if it's real. If it's real,, go ahead and have him do his best job...The Beatles are very strict on how their product is being produced, so only time will tell

By WannaBeatle at 2:45 AM ON 08/21/09

oh yeah, I have to add, that since Bob Zemeckis directed I Want to Hold Your hand in '78, at least we know he's a Beatle fan. That movie was actually quite 'cute' and very enjoyable

By Dazzler69 at 8:17 AM ON 08/21/09

New video game for Beatles ad animi was really cool. I hope they make it in that style.

By Moravec at 8:57 AM ON 08/21/09

Sacrilege

By prospero at 9:07 PM ON 08/21/09

Actually the original film was nominated for a Hugo in 1969 so apparently more than a few thought of it as science fiction" and since it does play with time and space, I guess it fits as well as many others that have earned the title.

All the same, my vote is for no remake as well.

By Jair at 6:13 PM ON 09/11/09

If you guys don't like the idea DON'T WATCH IT and don't worry about it, nobody is forcing you to do anything!!! I'm not saying the original version is not amazing but stop complaining; it's not going to affect you in any way and i doubt they will change their minds just because of what some people think...

By The Protector of Pepperland at 3:20 PM ON 11/03/09

It's a bit early to bash this, isn't it?

That said: I do hope Jim Carrey isn't in this one. It would be nice if Ringo and Paul did the voices for their digital dopplegangers, but I know Paul is far too busy with his career to do it. Unless he does make time for it. Then, I'd be shocked.

It is fantasy, which is a sub-division of science fiction.
