It wasn't a great weekend for genre movies.
Shane Acker's animated film 9 took second place, with $10.9 million, in line with expectations. The film got an early start on the competition by opening on Wednesday, and its total stands at $15.3 million.
But other debuts tanked. Sorority Row debuted in sixth place, with $5.3 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Kate Beckinsale's icy thriller Whiteout, meawhile, came in in seventh place, with just $5.1 million. Both films had been expected to open in the high-single-digit range.
The Final Destination, which topped the box office for the previous two weekends, fell to fifth place, with $5.5 million, taking its total to $58.3 million.
Quentin Tarantino's alternate-history movie Inglourious Basterds slipped one place to third place, with $6.5 million in its fourth weekend. The film has now earned $104.4 million.
Business usually drops sharply in the first weekend following the U.S. Labor Day holiday weekend, as children return to school and football season kicks in, the trade paper reported.

maybe if it didn't cost $10-12 each to see a movie, more people would... I know I would have gone and seen 9 if it didn't cost so much. Most summer movies I will wait to get on Netflix.
And why would anyone want to see Sorority Row?

I went and saw 9 it was an ok movie. The only reason i paid 9.75 for it was I saw it with family and sometimes you need to get out and see something to get a better feel for it then any other way. (got the wife off my back as well). Other then that it's to expensive and to much hassle with the loud people and crappy interuptions. When will the movie industry learn its time to stream movies into homes rather then movie theaters. that way you can be home and they can flat rate the movies to less then 5. Who's with me?

Sorority Row is horror, not scifi, and it looks like dreck, as does that one with Meghan Fox. I do think they'll do okay with the younger audiences, but well, summer is over, it's Fall, and the younger audience is back in school, leaving, oh dear ,the rest of us! ;) I do plan to see "9" when I can, but otherwise, nothing else looks that appealing. Surely not enough to dump $10 on it.

I saw 9 and thought it was pretty great..like other reports it was a bit light on plot but visually stunning...I paid $5 for the first show..totally worth it. Sorority Row is not scifi but it can be considered a genre film which this article was about...I would want to see it, looks in line with the rest of the remakes. As for Jennifer's Body, I will admit I want to see it because it does look a bit creepy but Megan Fox and Amanda look awesome in it.

Ya, 9 was a good movie. Not great, but good. Tall on visuals and creative design, short on plot.

Is it me, or is the weekend not over yet?

i went to see 9 too. I agree w/ shadowglare, it was a pretty good movie. However, the plot was kind of weak. I would have liked to have seen more character developement. But then again, how much character developement can you get from an 8in doll?

The problem with 9 is that it tries to appeal both adults and children. It looks great, and even animated well for children and yes it's a little dark, but its difficult to sell at this time.
I mean if it looks like it was made for children and the kids are going back to school, the adults don't really have enough reasons to motivate them to spend that much money to see it with their friends or by themselves to watch something that is 75% for kids, 25% for adults.
THANK GOD SORORITY ROW FAILED. I was afraid something that crappy was going to be successful like final destination, which im still wondering how in the hell that was number 1 for 2 weeks.
Whiteout, thats simple, it's still being debated if this movie is scifi, horror, or something. Just because it was adapted from a graphic novel doesnt mean its scifi. Its rare but some graphic novels are just mysteries. The problem with this movie was nobody knew what this was about really, I mean the way the promoted this left people confused as in what kind of movie they were going to see. Seeing Kate Beckinsale naked isnt something new, plus if thats the reason why some people go to see it, you will get much more and then some of her being naked, from an old movie called Haunted (not to be confused with the The Haunted) just simply Haunted.

maybe if it came out in more theaters it would have done better. 9 isn't even coming to my town or any place closer then 90 miles away.

8.75 if I see the movie before 5pm
12.25 if I go after 5pm
$6 for a Pepsi
$8 for a popcorn
Family of four to see one movie after work with popcorn and drinks.... $89
And thats IF you say no to the kids on nachos, candies, hot dogs and other snacks
If the movie sucks your ripped off for near one hundred dollars.
