Amanda Tapping says that a new Stargate SG-1 movie could begin production later this year, as soon as the first season of Syfy's upcoming SGU: Stargate Universe wraps. A new straight-to-DVD movie was announced a while back.
"As far as I know, we may start in late fall or early winter this year," Tapping said in an exclusive interview. "And I will slip back into Sam Carter very nicely; I'm looking forward to it."
Martin Wood would again direct. "They asked me to direct the Stargate SG-1 movie, and they are waiting until Universe is finished, and then, of course, they ask me when I'm available," said Wood, who was also a co-producer on Stargate SG-1 and a supervising producer on Atlantis, as well as an executive producer, with Tapping, on Syfy's Sanctuary. "Then that may get done by the end of the year. That's what everyone is hoping, at least."
What about a new Stargate Atlantis movie? "Atlantis is still being talked about for this year," Wood said. "Right now, I'm so far removed from it, but they'll let me know, and I'm happy to do it."
The SG-1 movie is green-lighted, and the Atlantis film is in the works, but both Wood and Tapping are already committed to the second season of Sanctuary, which finished filming in July but still needs work to be done. The first season's four-disc DVD set is coming out next Tuesday.
Wood spoke this week from his car, driving to finish up sound editing on season two of Sanctuary. He's eager to see Tapping put on Carter's fatigues again.
"Samantha Carter is a very familiar mindset for Amanda, so it won't be hard for her to find her," Wood said. "In fact, there are a number of people I've met going to conventions who said they did not realize at first that she was the same person as Dr. Magnus on Sanctuary."
Tapping said she tried very hard to make her role as Stargate's Col. Carter very different from the sultry and mysterious Dr. Helen Magnus, who runs a haven for abnormal creatures in Sanctuary.
"I dyed my hair and changed my accent and made it so that I don't look at all like Carter," Tapping said. "I needed to reinvent myself as an artist, so it was a challenge. I had to have more eccentricities and walk with stilettos."
The new season of Sanctuary begins Oct. 9 and will air Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Tapping directs one of the new episodes. (Look for details on that tomorrow.)
Tapping will also make an appearance in the premiere of Stargate Universe, which debuts Oct. 2 at 9 p.m.

Fantastic. Stargate SG1 was one of a list of shows that greatly improved over the movie. It was one of my favorite shows for all 10 seasons it ran. Too bad it ended.
Other shows that were better than the movie were Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Highlander.

Glad to SG-1 back in the saddle yet again! It's become sort of my sci-fi comfort food over the years. And Amanda Tapping does a terrific job as an actress credibly transitioning between two completely different roles (albeit within the same genre.:D)!

good.i miss stargate and look forward to this and to an atlantis movie.
By Jeff at 8:06 AM ON 09/10/09
Amanding Tapping in stilettos...that's the only thing I can think of!
By J at 8:08 AM ON 09/10/09
I wouldn't normally be in favour of an SG-1 movie as the series really declined in latter years, but I thought Continuum was surprisingly good (after the first 10mins), so I'm actually looking forward to this.
I hope they can do the series justice (as in Continuum). I worry with so much stuff going on for the writers that their creative juices are spread too thin.
By asfm at 8:09 AM ON 09/10/09
More? Ugh. SG-1 should have ended forever in season 7. And I only say 7 because that's where the Heroes two parter is. Besides that, it could have done with ending in season 6, maybe even 5.
Besides Heroes I don't remember any great episodes in seasons 7 or 6.

Bring it! Long live SG-1 and Atlantis!!!! I can't
wait. It's been too long since we have seen
Amanda Tapping, O'Neil, Jackson and Teal'c
on screen.
By tekkblade at 9:03 AM ON 09/10/09
STARGATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (side note: i wish i had bigger text) both atlantis and SG-1 were amazing shows, the characters and adventures were both so fun to watch. I'm really looking forward to SGU and can't wait to see Sheppard again in an Atlantis movie.
By daveh077 at 9:13 AM ON 09/10/09
Wouldn't they have to rebuild the SGC Set seeing as that set was torn down and redesigned to be the Icarus base in Stargate Universe?
By danjack at 9:41 AM ON 09/10/09
Awesome news! SG-1 is still one of the best, and consistently entertaining, shows in
Sci-Fidom. Bring us more please.
Although I liked Ark of Truth far more than Continuum (better character development), I hope the next movie will be great fun and hopefully bring in some guest characters from the old days that fans would love to see again (i.e. Bratac, Jonas Quinn).
Also, it would be nice to see the Aschen again or the Furlings at long last!!!
By Cheapshot at 9:50 AM ON 09/10/09
@ asfm... seriously? The worst of Stargate was better than any show on at the time.
Sanctuary is so blah, does anyone watch it? Every friend I have that watched SG-1 couldn't tell me what the show is about.
Stargate can and should go on for years to come. It is a solid, and interesting concept that scifi fans will be devoted to as long as it continues and beyond.
By Felipe 058 at 9:51 AM ON 09/10/09
Yes!!! More Stargate of any sort is always a good thing, and more Amanda Tapping is always better! Can't wait for them to start working on this and then for it to come out :D !
By EH-T at 10:15 AM ON 09/10/09
I watch Sanctuary and love it! Looking forward to season 2 and the DVDs for season 1. Based on the information to date, the extras on the DVDs sound wonderful. Also looking forward to the next SG1 movie. Thanks to Amanda Tapping and Martin Wood (and everyone else involved) for bringing me my two favourite TV shows.
By wraithfodder42 at 11:24 AM ON 09/10/09
No offense, but "could begin production" and "we may start" is just maybe, might, etc. I think when MGM puts out a Press Release announcing production of the movie (movies, I hope, as I sure want an SGA one!) then I'll believe it. That, or the actors begin tweeting off the set.
By stargazer_1682 at 12:30 PM ON 09/10/09
My brother's going to love hearing this. Much more encouraging than the last article said that it wasn't looking good for near future, because DVD sales were down.
I introduced my brother to Stargate SG1 a few years ago and he's become obsessed, he's watched every episode a million times, owns all the episodes (SG1 at anyway, working on getting all of Atlantas) and drives his wife crazy about it.
Oddly enough though, he didnt care much for the last two movies; thought they didn't develop the plot very well for a feature length story.
By diesel at 1:21 PM ON 09/10/09
I agree with danjack
" it would be nice to see the Aschen again or the Furlings at long last!!!"
I also would like them to develop a story with the giant aliens that Daniel's uncle went away with.
By Hank Jekyll at 3:04 PM ON 09/10/09
Yep they would be fools not to do a movie. And whats next for Col. O'Neill aka MacGuyver aka R.D.A.? I'm hoping for a new series in which he plays all his former roles and himself and they team up in some kinda hyper-time/inter-dimensional platform. EPIC.
By chief6309 at 3:06 PM ON 09/10/09
OUTSTANDING! I can't wait for the new Stargate SG1 to come out. I will buy at least 2 copies, and hope it comes out on Blue-ray. I am a fan and was a fan for most of it's run on SciFi (SYFY), and have enjoyed all ten seasons, including seasons 6,9, and 10. I still really really wish it had not been cancelled. I am not in the 18-45 demo as I am 64 so I guess my opinion didn't count. Through for the record nobody asked me either.
By ckale at 4:32 PM ON 09/10/09
@cheapshot (totally fitting name) I love Sanctuary. I loved SG1. I loved Atlantis. No need to knock down one to love the others.
By aerynsboy at 4:41 PM ON 09/10/09
asfm, if you dislike SG1 so much, then why did you even read this article, let alone post a comment about a show that, in your worlds, "could have done with ending in season 6, maybe even 5"???
By kasiaaintpink at 4:42 PM ON 09/10/09
This makes me soooooo happy :) SGU... more SG1... and nearly another SGA... as well as more Sanctuary?!?!?! Perfection :)
x.
By aerynsboy at 4:44 PM ON 09/10/09
Oops! My bad! It should be words, not worlds.
By Blue247 at 5:08 PM ON 09/10/09
One word...Furlings!
By joesocwork at 5:52 PM ON 09/10/09
I'm okay with meeting the Furlings as long as they don't look like Ewoks! :P
By Macy at 7:16 PM ON 09/10/09
I just love her. Great actress, better person :)
By wraithfodder42 at 7:37 PM ON 09/10/09
Interesting how the title was changed.. it was "“New Stargate SG-1 movie in works” biut is now " New Stargate movies finally ready to begin shooting?"
Google alerts are good for immortailizing these changes ;)
By majorsal at 7:40 PM ON 09/10/09
woo hoo!! i SO hope this comes to pass!!
amanda + sg1 + sanctuary = happy fan! :D
By Corvidae at 8:37 PM ON 09/10/09
Two comments:
1) Highlander movie is good. Particularly with the superb Queen soundtrack.
2) Do we need another Stargate movie? Personally, I would much rather see them put more of an effort in the soon-to-be-released series SGU.
By llp at 10:07 PM ON 09/10/09
I only hope she still gets to go to Gabit in November. I am really looking forward to that.
By Impy at 11:15 PM ON 09/10/09
It would be nice to hear her speak American English instead of that STUPID British accent.
By M at 11:57 PM ON 09/10/09
So let me get this straight. They've got the money to do SGU. They've got the money to do yet another SG-1 movie. But they're still just "talking" about an Atlantis movie? Yet again, Atlantis fans get screwed over.
By JM at 3:06 AM ON 09/11/09
Looking forward to this movie. Not a big fan of Carter but as long as Teal'c, Daniel and Vala are there then so am I.
By S. at 9:13 AM ON 09/11/09
I want Sam & Jack confirmation on this movie! Over a decade of waiting! I say enough!!!!
By SV at 10:57 AM ON 09/11/09
I'd much rather see the SGA movie first, SG1 already had a couple, so I could wait on them if only one is to be made.
By Matthew486DX at 2:36 PM ON 09/11/09
@asfm
What the FRAK is your problem?
REDEMPTION? ABYSS? PARADISE LOST? MEMENTO? FULL CIRCLE? LOST CITY!? EVOLUTION? NEW ORDER!? RECKONING!? THREADS!? MOEBIUS!?
That's a grand total of 17 awesome episodes in Seasons 6-8.
By sanctuary4all at 4:20 PM ON 09/11/09
Another one word...Fraiser! Bring back Doc Fraiser this time around if the story has anything to do with timelines, ect... And hopefully not for a 20 second blurb like in Ripple Effect. pretty please..with sugar on top??
By col kevin roberts at 6:13 PM ON 09/12/09
i doubt we will see the Furlings, Brad Wright done hinted that it's not gonna happen. Unless it's all a trick which would be killer! The only look at the Furlings is episode 200 season 10 of SG-1 which is a joke sorta version of them
By suse at 6:14 PM ON 09/12/09
@ Cheapshot (and what a very apropos name that is!)
"The worst of Stargate was better than any show on at the time."
Really? The worst of Stargate - S9 and a good chunk of S10, with occasional earlier eps - was really bad. Painful. SGA, some good eps most mostly, meh. The best of Stargate - as good as it was - never even came close to the stories on Babylon 5.
Sanctuary is great. Sure, there were a few weak eps. It was the first season and no show has *all* strong eps. But the premise is solid and well thought out. AT and the rest of the cast do a very credible job. I can't wait for 9/15 for the DVDs!
By suse at 6:16 PM ON 09/12/09
Just so people know, Amanda chose that accent because while Helen is from Victorian England, she has lived all over the world and picked up other accents that have softened hers. Dude, I was in London for 2 weeks and could feel my tongue placing differently in my mouth. And have an odd mixture of Northern/Southern USA accent from moving as a kid. And she's 158 and has been living around the world a good 100 years or so years. Just get over that it's not AT's normal accent. She does a great job. She does note that when she uses and American accent (Requiem comes to mind) it's a conscious choice - Helen is mocking Will.
By DV Fan at 1:39 AM ON 09/24/09
I really wish that Vala would be in the third movie! Apperently she wont be. I wonder if they'll mention her in third movie or will just pretend like she never existed. I think thats what worries me, cause I love Daniel/Vala and I think it would be a shame for them to just leave that as is without exploring it further and/or ignoring it all together. what do other people think about this?
By gdoll at 3:41 AM ON 09/29/09
I am going to miss stargate Atlantis, why did they have to stop it. They should have stopped like SG -1 at least a season 9 or better yet 10, that would be great. Now what next for the SGA fans, are we supposed to just sit back and wait for the movie, darn that is going to be one hell of a wait.
By Penny at 12:10 PM ON 10/26/09
Can't wait to see Richard Dean Anderson back as Jack O'Neil. The whole Stargate Franchise was based on his populary [Which did great], and he still has a big fan base. Hopefully he will have a juice roll and not just comical relieve as in the last Stargate Movie. He really is a great actor, [ as per several movies he has made] just not given rolles in Stargate, he needs to get his teeth in to and really act. The DVD will sell on his name alone.
By khiong at 9:21 AM ON 10/31/09
INDEED....
at last can we see furlings?
By David at 8:02 PM ON 11/15/09
Yet another SG-1 movie? Possibly an Atlantis movie, too? Bravo! About time!
I was watching "Ark of Truth" and "Continuum" again on television today, and figuring that was the end of it, since "Stargate: Universe" had come along. It's SO disappointing; I wouldn't watch it for money.
What happy news, that another SG-1movie is in the works. Perhaps "Atlantis" won't be far behind. :)
P.S. A word to the producers: you want a sure bet to get an audience? Get Richard Dean Anderson back. Period.
By easy at 8:27 PM ON 12/12/09
can't wait for an other movie, loved sg1, exept for all that king arthur stuff in the last season, that realy hurt the complete feeling of the show, but ill try to act like it newer happned, and cross my fingers;-)
wondering if universe will ever be as entertaining as sg1 and atlantis, i was so exited to hear that it was comming, and now im wondering if its worth watching at all, there is so much character development they forget it's scifi, all that romance, relations and video diary, just kills is so badly, its like the bold and the beautiful in space
By the at 8:15 AM ON 12/19/09
it was a shame that sg1 and atlantis stoped but the new movie i hope will be a lot better and the new show really sucks ass
By Dan at 10:08 AM ON 01/19/10
