[Update: Profiles in History issued a correction to its announcement: "Macintosh was, indeed, presented to Gene Roddenberry by Apple. There is no doubt about this. The conflict between the photo and the serial number is as follows. This computer, given by Apple to Mr. Roddenberry, is an early production Macintosh 128 (#776), which was then upgraded by Apple for Gene to a Macintosh Plus-thus the model number / serial number / panel that "belongs to" a Macintosh Plus. The 0001 led us to mistakenly believe that it was the first one off the line.]
Geek explosion! Profiles in History is set to auction off the first Apple Macintosh Plus, serial number 0001, which was given to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry by Apple. Man, tell people that George Lucas wrote the first Star Wars draft on this thing, and you've got the trifecta.
It'll be auctioned off on Oct. 8 and 9, and it's got a surprisingly low estimated sale price, between $800 and $1,200. That low? Do you guys know that this is a combo of Apple nerdery and Star Trek nerdery? You might want to add a zero to the end of that estimate.

That's not a Mac Plus. The Mac Plus was model number M0001A and had Mac Plus written next to the Apple Logo on the front.
So it is actually a Macintosh (as originally called) or Macintosh 128K.

If it was owned by the late great Mr. Roddenberry, then put me down for fifty bars of gold pressed latnum!!

Is it just me or does the editorial style of scifiwire.com seem a little informal lately? Between this and the Star Trek/healthcare reform article it sure feels like a college kid's blog or Facebook postings.

See this is why you need to stick with Sci-Fi not SyFy...Writer FAIL.
"Man, tell people that George Lucas wrote the first Star Wars draft on this thing, and you've got the trifecta."
Mr George was done writing Star Wars 10 years before that and to this day he still uses note pad and paper (according to his documentary for writing Phantom Menace)....need to check yer facts.

I think this sentence is poorly constructed: "Man, tell people that George Lucas wrote the first Star Wars draft on this thing, and you've got the trifecta." This suggests that George uses a computer of any sort for first draft.
It should rather read: "Man, if George Lucas wrote the first Star Wars draft on this thing, you've got the trifecta."

Well some of ST:TNG sure could have been written on this box given it premiered in 1987, I've got two Mac of similar vintage in the basement though. I haven't powered them up for a decade or so.

I hope someone buys so it does not end up in a landfill or as toxic pollution in Asia or Africa like the millions of other old computers folks toss every year

I worked in a store that sold Apples. When you upgrade a Mac 128 to a Mac Plus, the serial number was not to be changed. So, the corrections are all correct.

Aww, so no signatures inside the case. Saddest thing about the Mac Plus upgrade.
So how did you determine it is #776? The auction house or from the serial number? I have some old Macs and I'd like to decipher their serial numbers too.
