Dr. Horrible wins first Emmy for Joss Whedon

\<i\>Dr. Horrible\<\/i\> wins first Emmy for Joss Whedon

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog on Saturday won the Emmy Award for short-format live-action entertainment programs, a first for creator Joss Whedon, whose only previous Emmy nomination was for writing the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Hush," which he didn't win. The award was one of the Creative Arts Primetime Emmys presented in Los Angeles, which recognize technical and other achievements for the 2008-'09 season.

The well-deserved Emmy recognized the unprecedented Web musical, which Whedon created with the help of his brothers Zack Whedon (a television writer) and Jed Whedon (a composer) and actress Maurissa Tancharoen, who is also Jed's wife. (She prefers the designation "writer/actress/wife/ruler of all the Whedons.")

The 43-minute musical centers on the title wannabe supervillain, played by Neil Patrick Harris, who secretly pines for Penny (Felicia Day) while scheming to vanquish the superhero Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion) and gain entry into the Evil League of Evil.

Dr. Horrible was one of the nominees in the brand-new Emmy category of short-format live-action entertainment program. The nominees also included Syfy.com's Battlestar Galactica: The Face of the Enemy, written by Whedon's one-time Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer Jane Espenson.

Syfy's Battlestar Galactica did win an award for best sound editing for a series.

In other creative arts Emmy awards, True Blood won for casting, Chuck won an Emmy for stunt work, and Pushing Daisies won Emmys for costuming, art direction and makeup.

Well deserved indeed, I have seen Dr. Horrible countless times on Hulu and eventually bought the DVD which has awesome extras. It's creative, funny, and the songs stay with you. Of course props to Felicia Day from The Guild who is awesome as Penny, NPR and Nathan Fillion. Great to see some recognition coming to something so unique...

Whedon finally wins an Emmy!

Wow! I thought for ten years that Hush won an Emmy for Buffy, but I just did the research and saw that it lost to the West Wing.

Firefly did win a Special Effects Emmy, but that's technically not a win for Joss himself.

Yeah, I thought "Hush" won an Emmy also, but since it should've, let's pretend it did. That was an episode that was "Twilight Zone" 'esque. 20 years from now who's gonna remember that "West Wing" episode, and how many of us will remember "Hush"?

The Buffy musical was far more deserving. Not that the Emmys have anything to do with deserving.

@_maltheus_ The Buffy episode might have been more deserving if you look at the entirety of Buffy, but as a musical theater geek and a lover of Whedon's work, I would have to say that as a lyricist, his work has gotten significantly better since the Buffy musical, and the music is more mature in terms of composition as well.

That said, the Buffy episode IS great, Dr. Horrible was wonderful, and good on Joss Whedon for finally getting this long overdue nod.

EXcellent! For those who haven't seen it, blow the ten bucks and buy the DVD. You won't regret it.
