Sci-fi in memoriam: We list the people the Emmys left out

Sci-fi in memoriam: We list the people the Emmys left out
Andy Hallett as Lorne (with Angel co-star Amy Acker) at The WB's Television Critics' Association party in January 2004

The Twitterati are noting omissions from the Emmys' "In Memoriam" segment, and some have sci-fi connections:

Star Trek first lady Majel Barrett Roddenberry. (Thanks, @Gates H)

♦Our beloved Andy Hallett of Angel.

Kim Manners, executive producer and director of Supernatural and a longtime X-Files helmer.

♦Harvey Frand, producer of Battlestar Galactica.

Lost in Space robot Bob May. (Thanks, @scifire)

♦Edward J. Lakso, who wrote for Star Trek, Charlie's Angels and feature films and numerous other series. (Thanks to @insstavlin)

Any others? Honor them in the comments and we'll add 'em to our list.

Andy Hallett was only 33 years old when we lost him. To say that Lorne, his character on "Angel", was a much loved character would be an massive understatement. I'll quote myself from my essay on Angel season two:

"The best character in season two, though, was Lorne, a.k.a. Krevlornswath of the Deathwok Clan, karaoke demon host extraordinaire. He functioned as both a psychotherapist and a stand-up comic, and he looked like he belonged in that makeup and wardrobe. From his debut in the very first scene right through the end of the season, I loved every scene Lorne was in and every word he spoke. He made me laugh out loud constantly, and I particularly loved the way he interacted with Angel -- calling him 'sweetie,' 'angel-face,' and 'a hunk of hero sandwich,' and asking him out to Elton John concerts."

And again, season three:

"Lorne (Andy Hallett) made every scene better just by being in it. This season, his karaoke bar was completely trashed (twice) and he ended up stuck at the hotel, delivering hilarious one-liners and helping Angel with the baby. Either Lorne got all the best lines or his delivery was just outstanding (probably both); whatever it was, I enjoyed the heck out him. I particularly loved the way he constantly flirted with Angel, and the way Angel bantered right on back (stop calling me pastries). Angel needed a friend like Lorne; Lorne was always there for him. The two of them co-parenting Connor was one of my favorite continuing plotlines in season three."

I saw Andy Hallett at an autograph event (with Alexis Denisof) in Santa Barbara back in 2002, and they were both delightful. I'm so glad I got to meet Andy. I'll miss him.

Award shows have a long-standing tradition of snubbing science fiction and those associated with it. That's why I have a long-standing tradition of snubbing awards shows.

I noticed that they left out Edward J. Lakso, who had a big association with Charlie's Angels as a producer and writer. He also wrote a couple of episodes of the Planet of the Apes television series and the infamous original Star Trek episode And The Children Shall Lead.

I forgot about kim manners! His was a terrible lost (I've been a xphile like half my life) and I can't believe they didn't mention him.

Andreas Katsulas: G'Kar of B5 and Tomolok of ST:TNG. Richard Biggs: Dr. Stephen Franklin of B5. Why is it that even ScifiWire can't remember these actors of much-loved characters?

By Les at 5:25 PM ON 09/21/09

@gordol

They're talking about people lost in the past year; it's been a few for both of them (2006 for Katsulas, 2004 for Rick Biggs).

By scifire at 7:05 PM ON 09/21/09

What about Jonathan Harris and Bob May, both of Lost In Space?!

By Gates H at 7:11 PM ON 09/21/09

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry. Star Trek's first lady. The Original Series' Nurse Chapel, TNG's Lwaxana Troi and the computer voice in all the series as well as most of the movies.

By infernosphere2003 at 11:12 PM ON 09/21/09

Majel's passing is sad but at least she led a full life. Andy was too soon.

I still can't believe they left out Kim Manners! He was so talented and respected in the industry. It was a long list this year and it is a shame that so many people were left out. At least we all took the time to remember.

By shroudedwolf at 9:05 AM ON 09/23/09

Did Donald Leroy LaFontaine get remembered last year? I forget. If not, add him. (He was the voice behind movie trailers.)

By divephotog at 3:42 AM ON 09/24/09

Not sure on when they consider the cut-off, like from airing to airing, or calender year, but a few they missed: Patrick McGoohan (Braveheart, Scanners, The Prisoner, and so many more); and possibly Arthur C Clarke was in the time frame... But as I said, not sure on what they use for timeposts... - KH

By Kevin Brettauer at 6:06 PM ON 09/26/09

Dive, McGoohan was included towards the beginning.

Lorena Gale of Battlestar Galactica, Smallville and others was woefully not included.

Weren't there several trek deaths at one time? incl. Alexander Courage who wrote the original theme? or was that last year?

By LrdBowler at 1:11 PM ON 10/16/09

Have to say Julius Carrey III who starred in Brisco County Jr. and guested in Earth 2 and other TV Projects.
