Fast & Furious director will tackle a Highlander reboot

\<i\>Fast & Furious\<\/i\> director will tackle a \<i\>Highlander\<\/i\> reboot

Who said there can be only one?

Summit Entertainment is going to reboot the popular Highlander film franchise by handing the reins to Justin Lin, director of Fast & Furious.

He will direct from a script to be written by Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.

The reboot will reportedly deal with an immortal Scottish swordsman who must confront a murderously brutal barbarian, who lusts for a fabled prize (or Prize?).

Unclear how much, if any, of the previous franchise's mythology will figure into the reboot.

Fans know that the franchise kicked off with 1986's awesome, loopy first movie, starring American-born, Swiss-raised Christopher Lambert as the immortal medieval Scots highlander Connor MacLeod and Scottish-born Sean Connery as an immortal Spanish nobleman with the improbable name Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez. The fact that Connery's Scots accent remained intact and was better than Lambert's only added to the film's charm.

Central to the franchise's increasingly Byzantine mythology are the sword battles in which one immortal beheads another to acquire his or her energy.

And while the first film supposedly ended with MacLeod as the last immortal standing, there always seemed to be more in the wings: The hit first film spawned four successively worse sequels, plus a pair of well-regarded TV shows (starring English actor Adrian Paul as Duncan MacLeod and Elizabeth Gracen as Amanda), not to mention an animated series, an animated movie, an animated flash-movie series, 10 original novels and 17 comic-book issues.

And the producers of each of those subsequently disappointing movies failed to pay attention to the catch phrase of the first movie: There can be only one. The first movie was a lot of fun. All the sequels were gawdawful.

By richardnj at 3:50 PM ON 09/22/09

I thought the first, second and third films lacked substance, but the fourth (after the TV show) was probably the best. I think, if they capture the essence of the show, they have a good Highlander movie.

By Hercules40 at 3:50 PM ON 09/22/09

Precisely...

there should have ONLY been ONE!

When will these people learn?

By sog14 at 3:58 PM ON 09/22/09

The SHOULD be only one! And how is Highlander not out on Blu-Ray for cryin' out loud? That soundtrack and those fades in Blu-Ray? Awesome!

By TearEmUp at 4:10 PM ON 09/22/09

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times. Hollywood has lost all original thought. Remaking The Day The Earth Stood Still was wrong, this is wrong. If they even consider touching Forbidden Planet I'm turning in my flat panel.....

By mykl at 4:26 PM ON 09/22/09

Of all the directors to hand this to this pic some worthless talent like Lin. I have been sticking with the original for years, never really watching the sequels and will continue to do so.

By GlowGoBoy at 4:27 PM ON 09/22/09

I get that the powers that be are trying to capitalize off the "nostalgia" factor on these "Reboots" but I HAVE HAD ENOUGH! How about some NEW stories or heavens forbid, stories that haven't been DONE YET? Come, ON. Philip Jose Farmer's "The Dungeon" and Kevin J. Anderson's "Saga of the Seven Suns" or Tad Williams' brilliant "Otherland". There are plenty of NEW stories. How about putting some money into good writing instead of "bad hacks because these are the only things we can quickly do to make money". I'd rather watch and old episode of Dr. Who (who quite often had lousy special effects but incredible storytelling that brought me back each week!)

By JenMuse at 4:32 PM ON 09/22/09

How can you overlook American actor Clancy Brown as the Russian savage with a penchant for leather, whores, and nuns?

By photoguy_Ryan at 4:34 PM ON 09/22/09

Another re-boot? Dont they teach creativity in film schools anymore. I cant beleive there are so many people making millions of $$'s, just by re-writing/re-doing someone elses work, whether or not the original was succesful.

How about a new story, even if its based on "there can only be one". A perspective by someone other than a "McLeod".

Since there isnt anyone out there doing anything original anyway.

By Lehnsherr at 4:48 PM ON 09/22/09

The original was easily in my top 20 of all time favorites. Please….someone…anyone..Stop messing with our movies. Come up with your own original ideas.

If they remake it, I won’t be there.

Yes we all said it…. “There can be only one!”

By Hanh at 4:50 PM ON 09/22/09

I'll only watch it if they stick in THE KURGAN, aka Mr. Krabs. :) He's the best.

By gorehound696 at 5:02 PM ON 09/22/09

more fraken YARM !!! go to hell hollywood and get a life.
there can be only one highlander film.
and i am not buying your movies because you keep raping our pasts.
get a life and make us some new films and might just stop boycotting your greedy industry.

By Bluesman at 5:12 PM ON 09/22/09

And the fanboys have spoken.

Come join me at;

www.highlander-community.com

I run the site and have been waiting for the Remake since it was first announced. We have a worldwide membership made up of Highlander fans.

By The Doctor at 5:12 PM ON 09/22/09

It would be awsome if they could get Thomas Jane to play the lead.
Cant realy see any one else doing it.

By MCP-001 at 5:31 PM ON 09/22/09

"I'll only watch it if they stick in THE KURGAN, aka Mr. Krabs. :) He's the best."

I can see it now: There CAN BE only one! Arg ak ak ak ak ak ak ak ak ak!

By lfhlaw at 5:39 PM ON 09/22/09

The problem with this remake is that it is a cult movie. And it was combination of the actors, story AND Music. Queen's soundtrack helped to make the movie. I don't see how it could be done unless they totally rewrite the story and then it becomes well a non-re-boot, and a different animal all together...

Is it going to be an alternative reality? a la Star Trek? lol

By JK at 6:09 PM ON 09/22/09

I'll have to hunt down my source, but I know there's been talk about a remake of "Forbidden Planet" - I've read it elsewhere and will try to find... Hollywood sucks.

By Londeaux at 6:38 PM ON 09/22/09

If they do a reboot, they should try and get Colin Farrell, that way they'll have an actor who really is Scottish and can't fake the accent.

By Ken Morrison at 6:38 PM ON 09/22/09

"Of all the directors to hand this to this pic some worthless talent like Lin. I have been sticking with the original for years, never really watching the sequels and will continue to do so."

It could be worse - they could have given Uwe Boll money to do it...

By Anachronite at 7:39 PM ON 09/22/09

freaking idiots. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!! all the sequels sucked, and only the original was good, and it was great. Give us something original! Highlander has already been done. And don;t give any more films to the fast and furious people. those movies suck and are completely mindless.

By potcwe at 7:50 PM ON 09/22/09

Another "reboot" that will murder the oringal idea. They only do reboots because the public made them box office hits and they think that they can "improve" them with they latest flavor of month actors . Truth is they take good films and turn them in to shit, only when we the movie public stop going to see this rubbish will they get the message

By scififan at 8:48 PM ON 09/22/09

JK, I had heard that J Michael Strazynski, creator of Babylon 5, was looking to do a reboot of Forbidden Planet. A truly classic movie in its own right, but a remake could be interesting.

By seggwe at 9:09 PM ON 09/22/09

hey tearemup, guess what - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1317479/

By hermy at 9:47 PM ON 09/22/09

as much as i love highlander.with the "there can be only one" they kind of paint them selfs in a corner with that unless they stretch it out.but as hooky as it is we still love it.so bring on the reboot

By aerynsboy at 10:43 PM ON 09/22/09

Reboots, remakes...they're all the same to me. Highlander was, is and always be my favorite movie of all time.

How many remakes/reboots do we really need? So far here's a partial list that Hollywood in planning to do:

1. Red Dawn
2. RoboCop
3. Outland
4. Alien
5. Predator
6. Forbidden Planet
7. Star Trek (which was ok I'll admit)
8. Friday the 13th
9. Halloween
10. Karate Kid
11. Weird Science
12. Top Gun
13. Footloose
14. Romancing the Stone
15. Clash of the Titans
16. Nightmare on Elm Street
17. Escape From New York
18. The Thing
19. The Warriors
20. Hellraiser
21. Last House on the Left
22. Death Wish

This is getting ridiculous Hollywood!

By Scott at 10:46 PM ON 09/22/09

I'm with most others - sick of "YARMs"

The original was one of my all-time favourites (sequels were ho-hum).

No re-boot, re-make, re-invent will be able to capture the style of the original.

I suggest the producers plan on a "Direct to DVD" launch...

By prospero at 12:20 AM ON 09/23/09

If you really want them to stop making these remakes, then people need to stop going to them.

It's always about money.

By Magnus Knight at 2:52 AM ON 09/23/09

Regardless of what we have to say their going to make it anyway. I just hope they do it right. The first one is just a cult classic, I love it, The sequel however always seem to lack substance, imagination, sequel for sequel sake. They almost got it right when ENDGAME came out, but they dropped the ball yet again, not to mention the studio really blew fans to hell when they insisted on inserting certain shoots (Kell's Magical abilitiess, Conner&Duncan jumping through a portal, etc) in the trailer, but never intended for those scene to be in they movie. Lastly if they are plnning a franchise, no Prize at the end for the Highlander.

By Jeff. at 6:51 AM ON 09/23/09

I followed the TV series with Adrian Paul for its entire run. It was very good which sickened me even more when ENDGAME was released. Bad...Bad...Bad. It will be interesting to see who they get to play Connor McLeod in the reboot. Colin Farrell? Hugh Jackman?

By diesel at 7:17 AM ON 09/23/09

I liked the first movie. 2nd one was bad. 3rd one was okay. Endgame had the best action but messed up the story and mythology. I liked the series a lot better than the movie.

Adrian Paul was a better fighter and for some reason the special effects looked better / more real.

By RantingAgain at 7:17 AM ON 09/23/09

This just proves once again that creativity is dead. A reboot never stands up against the original, and once they see this simple fact, they reboot it again.

reboot = fast buck

Unfortunately for us, we suffer through lame scripts, bad acting, and 2 hours (if you are lucky) of dribble meant to entertain us.

What happened to the days when movies were fun to go to? The stories use to have something to sink you teeth into, now they spew this shallow crap at us movie after movie.

By caleyman94 at 10:13 AM ON 09/23/09

"If they do a reboot, they should try and get Colin Farrell, that way they'll have an actor who really is Scottish and can't fake the accent" Colin Farrell is Irish not scottish!! they should get David Tennant (Dr Who) who is Scottish.

By WhatWhatWHat at 10:37 AM ON 09/23/09

Vin Diesel as Connor!!!! Yes Yes Yes!!!

By TheDocToRx at 1:25 PM ON 09/23/09

FP remake. JMS will write, it would be an awesome re-do. you have to google the storyline. it is going to be a 3 parter...1st prequal about the civ that was on the planet. 2nd being the re-do of the movie and the 3rd would be them going back to the planet after it was destryed (somehow) it looked REALLY cool and if JMS is doing it I will watch. B5 is the best that the sci-fi gnere can offer. ST cant even come close. And james Cameron directing it!! It would be GLORIUS!!

By I.E. at 3:07 PM ON 09/23/09

unfortunately i see a pattern here. i'm 36 years old and have come to realize that it's my generation that's in hollywood now, producing, writing, directing, etc in television and film, so for the last few years and next few more, we're all going to see what influenced my generation during the mid to late 70's throughout the 80's.. this is just my observation, considering reboots of the amityville, the omen, etc... so either we'all going to enjoy it, or really loathe it

By jerfob at 5:02 PM ON 09/23/09

There is a whole plethora of Scots actors who could play this, I reckon James McAvoy would be great in the part. However, I am totally against any remake; if its not broken don't fix it. There really should be a special edition of this film as there was loads of footage that was cut before release that would be cool to add. I had the chance to speak to Christopher Lambert at the premier of Knight Moves (bad film, cool soundtrack) in Edinburgh many moons ago and he had some tales of stuff that was cut. That could have been the whiskey talking of course. To Londeaux, Colin Farrel is Irish you ignorant twat.

By oddball at 6:35 PM ON 09/23/09

I have neutral feelings with this remake. Perhaps they can take it in a direction that would actually setup sequels to be good, but at the same time if the remake sucks it's just going to shame the original.

Maybe perhaps they can just leave the first movie alone and remake 2 instead. Christopher Lambert isn't too old.

I say with all remakes if they hit bad sequels that lead nowhere to begin good new material. Just start with the first bad sequel and remake from there. No sense in remaking something already good and taking the chance of screwing it over.

"an immortal Scottish swordsman who must confront a murderously brutal barbarian"

MMMMMMM! OH YEAH!

By Al at 1:10 PM ON 09/25/09

Bah! They lost me when they came up with Highlander, The Source. Every movie tried to reinvent the original instead of continuing with the concept. The tv series is the only one that came close, although even that one soon lost steam, but still ended up better than all the rest of the movies combined.

Pass.

By denny cranium at 9:46 PM ON 10/04/09

I want to see another Highlander if ITS DONE RIGHT.
To me Highlander was about the human condition against the immortal backdrop.
Connor lighting a candle on Heathers birthday 400 years later.
Holding a grudge for 400 years. A love story for generations.
Yeah, I liked the sword fighting too.
Do a good job on the new Highlander and I will be in line.
