Fox rebooting Fantastic Four

Fox rebooting \<i\>Fantastic Four\<\/i\>

Oscar-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has been tapped to reboot the Fantastic Four movie franchise for Fox, bringing the FF into the same camp of rebooted Marvel heroes that the Punisher and the Hulk belong to, Variety reports.

Goldsman will be acting as producer on the reboot. Michael Greene, veteran scripter of shows like Jack & Bobby, Smallville, Heroes and the upcoming Green Lantern movie, will write the screenplay.

Fox has produced two films featuring the Fantastic Four so far, 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Both were directed by Barbershop helmer Tim Story and were noteworthy for having a fairly lighthearted tone in a superhero movie market dominated by the likes of The Dark Knight and the fairly grim X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Aside for winning an Oscar for his screenplay for Ron Howard's A Beautiful Mind, Goldsman is known for producing films such as Constantine, I Am Legend and the upcoming adaptation of DC Comics' Jonah Hex. He also gained some infamy for writing the generally reviled Batman & Robin.

No word yet if this reboot will bring the FF into the same movie continuity shared by Iron Man, the Hulk and Nick Fury, as has been established in the "tags" following Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

Great... another reboot of a reboot... of a movie that sucked. Guaranteeing I won't see the new version of the new version of the old version.

If there's any doubt that Hollywood is losing IQ points on a yearly basis, this is more proof.

By Alverant at 9:40 AM ON 09/01/09

Here's an idea for a superhero movie, skip the origin. Start out with the heroes already having their powers and having skill using them. We don't need another origin story.

By phoenixjf at 9:43 AM ON 09/01/09

Down with YARM! Down with YARM!

Hollywood, *please* if you can't come up with new ideas and plots, for the love of moviemaking, STEP ASIDE and let new people in who don't wish to simply remake/reboot what others have created long ago.

By Morfin at 9:46 AM ON 09/01/09

And of course, Goldsman is a hack. Besides the horrible Batman & Robin screenplay, he also did the Lost in Space screenplay. Beautiful Mind is obviously a fluke in his career.

By Michael at 10:03 AM ON 09/01/09

You know Hollywood is REALLY scraping the bottom of the barrel when they start doing remakes of crappy movies that are only a few years old

By griffon_man at 10:36 AM ON 09/01/09

There is no reason to "reboot" the system. The humor was nice, but the stories were light. Just make them a little more adult and less for children and move forward with the same cast in the Iron Man/Nick Fury universe

By FantasyFan at 11:01 AM ON 09/01/09

People regardless of fan protest holiwood preoducers will do it not matter what for example nickelodeon avatar well but I will say my 2 cents

pleassssssee Jesica alba no sue storm don get me wrong she is very cute and good actress but people with the contact lenses and make up she almost look like the wayan bros in white chicks
(one thing Im no racist for those who will say that )
another thing there are a lot of source material to make movies for example

Marc silvestri The darkness (even though I heard a movie is in the make but don see a lot interest in it )

The late Michael turner Fathom (but here with have supose megan fox in the title role)

those are a few example my point is that therea a lot of source material for movies but holiwood exec only try to cook the chicken same way over and over

By photoguy_ryan at 11:16 AM ON 09/01/09

Maybe you clowns in hollyweird should consider making a decent movie first, so "do over" reboots dont need to be made.

Screw the reboots of a movie that isnt very old, and just go on with the franchise, with decent writing, actors, producers, directors, et al... Are there any talented people in the business anymore?? I would rather see a decent movie with story and acting, than a piss poor over CGI'd wanna be cartoon

By tati at 11:20 AM ON 09/01/09

Why reboot this now? The series of movies isn't exactly old, yet. Geez.

By 13th Cylon at 11:22 AM ON 09/01/09

As both a Fan and a Father I have mixed feelings on this.

As a Fan I can only say, GREAT! The first two F4 movies have totally sucked. All I can ask is that the reboot, have real teeth, real drama and get rid of the cheese-pop-culture BS.

As a father... NO DON'T DO IT! Fantastic 4 is one of the few movies that is light enough for the younger kids to watch and enjoy; without all of the dark drama, violence and gore. My son, six years old, loves watching those movies, and I must say I don't worry when he watches them. He was really disappointed when I wouldn't take him to see Wolverine this summer, and Batman last summer, for obvious reasons.

You are never going to please all of the fans no matter what you do, and the movie market certainly has room for both types of comic-hero movies. I guess dark and grizzly is the trend right now, so go with the flow, and follow the money. In a few years when we have had our fill of dark and grizzly then we can re-reboot the reboots and get a little lighter.

So to recap, HURRAY/BOOO!

By Kalcean at 11:23 AM ON 09/01/09

I guess i don't mind so long as they do 2 things:
1. Possibly use cgi for the thing. I like Micheal Chiklis and all, but the thing is BIG. much taller and wider than Chiclis in the costume.
2. Remeber that Dr. Doom A: has an east european accent and b: got his "powers" from a combination of technology and magic. he was NEVER present on the ship when the four got their powers.

anyway, they could always gloss over the origin similar to the quick recap sort of thing they did in Incredible Hulk

By Zorro 6 at 11:32 AM ON 09/01/09

Coool!!! I can't wait to see the reboot of District 9! That film is so old now, I hope they can manage a "fresher" take on the storyline next year.

By FantasyFan at 11:32 AM ON 09/01/09

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I was forgetting something th even though Dr Doom was shown as simple villain you can get, the big bad capitalist, he was the highlight of both movies, if you read the comics you see him as very complex character no the narrow minded villain we saw
and there lies the problem when the audience are rooting for the villain no the heroes
didnt see a lot chemistry within the main cast sue and reed, sue and johnny even johnny and ben
the same happen on gijoe I am awalys been a fan of snakeeyes but here I like better stormshadow even cobra comander towards the end of the movie

By Taiso at 11:46 AM ON 09/01/09

The movies captured the chemistry between the four members of the team and really presented them as a family. I loved the character dynamics as the characters related to each other. Especially Johnny dogging Ben with all the practical jokes. These close, personal moments are what made the Fantastic Four different from just any other super group. They were/are a family, too.

But everything outside of the portrayal of a superhero team as a family totally failed.

ESPECIALLY their portrayal of Doctor Doom. In BOTH movies. Their interpretation of him was piss poor, unredeemably bad. And I don't even put it on the actor. He was just bad from a conceptual standpoint.

They got the Silver Surfer right but got Galactus totally wrong. If they ever decide to revisit the Galactus character and do him some justice, I recommend they actually read the issues he first appeared in and then read Marvels to see how the common man watched the battle between the FF and Galactus from the streets (which was fantastically portrayed.)

Personally, I'm all for recasting everyone and going all CGI with the Thing. MIchael Chiklis and Chris Evans were fine as The Thing and The Human Torch but Ioan Gruffud and Jessica Alba as Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman just didn't click very well. Gruffud didn't come off as very mature or intelligent and Alba will always be a sexpot first and that is just way too much public image to bring to a role as subdued as Sue Storm Richards. And it would just feel too wierd bring back only half the cast. Plus, I rather like the idea of a CGI thing. He should be large and rocky as he was portrayed in the classic John Byrne run on the comic.

My vote for the next movie's plot would revolve around either the Negative Zone or the Skrulls. I'd love to see Annihilus, always an iconic FF villain, on the big screen.

And I'd LOVE for them to integrate FF into the Iron Man/Nick Fury/Avengers universe. I think that would be wonderful. Personally, I'd like to see them get back X-Men and Spiderman as well, but we know how Hollywood can be with that crap.

By Kyle Nin at 12:10 PM ON 09/01/09

"Fox rebooting Fantastic Four."

Why? It's not even that old. Are they going to reboot "Batman Begins" too? And "Spider-Man"?

By vjw1218 at 1:35 PM ON 09/01/09

I guess I'm in the minority because I liked the movies very much. BUT I had never read a FF comic book, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Nevertheless, I do not see the need to reboot them because they aren't that old.

By Zaphod at 2:26 PM ON 09/01/09

The movies weren't perfect, but I enjoyed them. I was a big FF comic fan back in the 70s and 80s and was glad to see them finally on the big screen.

I have mixed feelings about a "reboot." I thought Michael Chiklis was perfect as Ben Grimm and I liked Chris Evans as Johnny. I liked Julian McMahon in the role of Doom, even though I think they could have done much better with the character.

I would definitely like to see at least Chiklis brought back, if not all three. I can take or leave Ioan Gruffudd but definitely think Jessica Alba was one of the worst casting decisions ever.

I agree it would be nice to see the FF in the same universe as the rest of the Marvel characters. Of course, that universe now might be located somewhere in Disneyworld.

By azrael1122 at 3:53 PM ON 09/01/09

Reboot??!! Why??!! Just use the same cast, and make a movie that doesn't suck as many balls as "Rise of the Silver Surfer"!!

Get John Favreau to do it or something...

By jb at 5:58 PM ON 09/01/09

This franchise can only be improved to the crap made so far. Lets hope.

By Rob at 6:09 PM ON 09/01/09

By the time a reboot is made, the characters will be owned by Disney. Expect Micky Mouse to on the the team.

By Matt25 at 6:44 PM ON 09/01/09

We just got two Fantastic Four movies a few years ago, and now Fox wants a re-boot? Damn, Hollywood must really be getting desperate.

By suprememango at 6:50 PM ON 09/01/09

I think this is a good idea. The first two movies are watchable but you spend the entire time wishing they were better. I also agree that Chiklis and Evans were great in the roles, McMahon was dark but the character wasn't developed enough. Gruffudd was a bit boring and Alba, as attractive as she is, in no way resembled the strong Sue Storm from the comics. If a reboot makes it better, I will support it. But ditch the origin story. Just jump right in

By Graham at 7:27 PM ON 09/01/09

Keep the cast and just make the third film with a script that is worthy. My vote would be to start with the end of an adventure, maybe with another hero saying goodbye and then jump in with the Inhumans appearing.

By hermy at 8:10 PM ON 09/01/09

instead of having the FF in there own reboot.why don't they just have them as part of a ironman or spiderman or have a small part in a silver surfer movie.i know the hulk reboot was good and made money.but enough already.

By PcTech45 at 8:32 PM ON 09/01/09

I agree with folks who say the Thing should be CGI. The Chiklis Thing was not even close to a fair representation. He needs to be bigger (almost Hulk size) and wider. CGI will make him as he's supposed to. Gruffudd was decent as Mr. Fantastic, but please get rid of Alba. Evans was great as the Torch.

By sactoguy35 at 9:19 PM ON 09/01/09

Why not "reboot" using the interim Fantastic 4: Hulk, Spiderman, Ghost Rider and Wolverine? Or the versions of the Fantastic 4 with Ant-Man, Black Panther, Crystal, Medusa, Ms. Marvel, Namorita, Power Man, She-Hulk, or Storm? Just Fox trying to wring out a few more pennies before their rights agreement expires and the whole Marvel Universe gets Disneyfied. Coming in 2014: Miley Cyrus as Sue Storm, Joe Jonas as Reed Richards, Nick Jonas as Johnny Storm and Kevin Jonas as Ben Grimm in Fantastic Four: The Musical!

By NotAnotherOne at 7:03 AM ON 09/02/09

OK, so where are the fresh ideas? Has the well run dry? Is there no one left in tinsel town with an original thought in their head? They are taking a B rated movie and, what, rebooting it as a C rated movie.

Now if they put some thought and time into it I'm sure they could do the FF justice, but the chances of that are nil -- "quickly write a script, film some crap, and they will come".

Very sad times indeed. I guess they think we're stupid and will pay to see anything.

By 3456 at 8:09 AM ON 09/02/09

I think Hollywood itself needs to be rebooted.
This is just utter nonsense. People, save your money and don't give it to Hollywood when they do asinine stuff like this.

3456 out...

By VARION at 8:32 AM ON 09/02/09

The comic book heroes and villians that cross over to film, love them or hate them, no reboots please. There is plenty of material out there to make any number of films. I.E. Black Panther, The Sentry, Nova Corp. How 'bout some team ups? Iron Man and hulk tackle Dr. Doom. Spiderman and The Punisher take on the Rhino and Kingpin. These comic/movie adaptations should be geared for the young, afterall it is just fantasy entertainment right?

By MCP-001 at 9:47 AM ON 09/02/09

"Reboot"?!?

Why would anyone want to 'reboot" a movie done 2 years ago?

Jeez louise! Is Hollywood so bankrupt of talent that they cannot conceive of a single viable original idea?

By Akuma63 at 10:17 AM ON 09/02/09

Why a reboot? Because the only good Fantastic Four Movie was made by Pixar, and Doom should not be a clone of Lex Luthor.

By MCP-001 at 10:38 AM ON 09/02/09

Made by Pixar?

Okay, you've lost me there.

By Akuma63 at 11:29 AM ON 09/02/09

The Incredibles

By Shaun at 12:33 PM ON 09/02/09

the incredibles is one of the greatest superhero flicks ever! perhaps brad bird should make this re-boot?

By Rob at 5:20 PM ON 09/02/09

Incredibles is the most blatant rip-off ever made. Disney needs buried.

By GQ at 6:38 AM ON 09/03/09

Not bothered by the reboot but I really don't want to sit through the origin story again.

By Tony at 11:50 PM ON 09/03/09
