Remember "Save the cheerleader. Save the world"? It was Heroes' first season, and and people loved it. More than 16 million of them. I was one of those people, and Heroes could do no wrong in that first season.
Well, I would have liked a bit more of a battle to save New York in the finale between the heroes and Sylar, but you can't have everything.
After watching the fourth-season premiere of "Volume Five: Redemption," I realized the roller-coaster ride the Heroes' writers have put me on. I mean, think back where the show first really went wrong, in "Volume Two: Generations" with the long trip from Mexico with the annoying brother-and-sister team, Alejandro and Maya. I have to admit I wanted Sylar to kill them both. And I barely remember Monica, the New Orleans chick who could mimic people's actions perfectly. Hiro got stuck in the past, and Peter forgot who he was.
And I didn't really care about the Shanti virus story. A virus is just not as cool as the thought of blowing up New York. I think we all thought it was a good idea to take a break thanks to the writers' strike that year and completely avoid the planned third volume, "Exodus," which would have dealt with the virus.
But then I got excited again in season three. I mean, a volume called "Villains" with Sylar back in real form sounded great. Imagine the possibilities. There was a new Bigger Bad, and it was Nathan and Peter's own dad, Arthur. And for a little while I loved it all over again. Although it was a little creepy when future Claire told future Peter that she'd always loved him. She's his niece, for Pete's sake.
Somewhere along the way, though, during "Villains," Heroes stopped feeling like it was about real superheroes. It's not that the writers didn't try, but the magic from season one never quite returned. And when Nathan suddenly turned against his own and became the bad guy for "Volume Four: Fugitives," I realized Heroes had completely gone off the rails again. What were they thinking turning Nathan into the bad guy? Seriously!
There were moments in "Fugitives" I liked, and I have to admit the ending with Sylar killing Nathan and then being forced to become him by Matt blew me away. Unfortunately, the roller-coaster ride of Heroes has taken its toll. Only 6 million of us watched Monday's two-episode premiere, the kicker on a sad but continuing erosion of ratings through the seasons.
I would have loved for "Volume Five: Redemption" to be the true redemption Heroes needs to get some of its viewers back. But that doesn't look like it's going to happen. The first hour of the premiere, "Orientation," moved at an agonizingly slow pace as we caught up again with all the characters, who seem not to be that far from where they were in season one, with Claire struggling to be normal, Nathan battling his nature, HRG being conflicted about work, Matt's worry that his wife is cheating on him, Niki's struggles (which are now Tracy's struggles) with her dark side, and Peter and Hiro's desire to be heroes.
The best of things certainly seem to be the cool new villain in carny master Samuel, played by Robert Knepper, and his main henchman, played by Star Wars' Ray Park, who has lightning speed and some really big knives. And thank God Hiro and Ando are back to add some comic relief to the too-serious events. Without them and their plan for Dial a Hero, the premiere wouldn't be much fun at all. And then there's Super Peter, saving lives as a paramedic with his super powers ... Although couldn't Super Peter just stop time and save people that way? I'm just saying.
Still, for every cool thing, there's a worrisome turn:
I find myself in the situation of Entertainment Weekly's Marc Bernardin. "I've invested four bloody years in Heroes, at the very least, I need to see how it ends," he wrote. "At this point, it's become a matter of pride. I am, however, pretty sure I'll spend much of the show's remaining life shaking my fist at the TV."
And so it goes. My love/hate relationship with Heroes continues. I love Hiro and Ando and HRG and Peter (although I wish he was sweet, as he was in season one) and Claire (although I wish she would stop whining and start saving the world again). I'm even fond of Matt and the Haitian. I love some of the wonderful places Tim Kring has taken me with these Heroes. And I love to hate Sylar (although he's beginning to look like Mr. Spock to me).
I know there will also be plenty to make me unhappy this season as well, and I imagine, like Mr. Bernardin, my fists will get a workout. However, since I'm sure this will be the last season for Heroes, I'm just hoping Mr. Kring takes us out on a high note so that final episode pays off in a big enough way to make me be glad I stuck by the show that, if nothing else, has given me one hell of a ride.
What do you think? Do you still care about Heroes?
By creno at 1:13 PM ON 09/24/09
Do I care? Nope. Heroes has been garbage since season 2. The only thing Heroes is good for is mocking.
By rip-rexo at 1:23 PM ON 09/24/09
the show never really moved forward.
By D S Starr at 1:24 PM ON 09/24/09
I didn't even know the new season had started. You'd think they do some promo ads for the new season.
By thanos at 1:26 PM ON 09/24/09
The Sylar as Nathan thing is ridiculous. Especially when his daughter Claire's blood would bring him right back to life. It doesn't even seem like the writers know their own show.
By Neil at 1:30 PM ON 09/24/09
You know there's a problem with a show named "Heroes" when no one actually does anything heroic. I stopped watching soon after the 2nd season began. I can't believe people still waste their time on this show.
By nilus at 1:30 PM ON 09/24/09
I think we all saw Heroes for what it was at the end of Season 1. All that build up to an ending and then poof. Over in a flash. Its been down hill ever since
By TrueEddie at 1:30 PM ON 09/24/09
I'm totally only watching Heroes because of the previous years of investment in it.
I agree with all of your worries except for Danko, I never liked the character, and was happy they killed him off.
By Velocity2k at 1:31 PM ON 09/24/09
You must have missed it, but last season Peter lost his ability to use more than one power at a time. So if he wants to stop time to save someone he'll have to touch Hiro again, but he looses the super speed he gained from Ray Park's character.
By Alastair at 1:32 PM ON 09/24/09
Actually I caught it on Hulu. I didnt even know the new episode was airing (I was watching the new season of House at the time).
For me it's been one of those things...far too many and too frequent breaks inbetween new episodes to keep my interest and with the declining storyline I really dont care if it continues or not but will watch it for much the same reason I finished watching BSG...just to see how it ends, even though the excitement and enjoyment had long since died.
By rkf at 1:33 PM ON 09/24/09
Season Two was pretty lousy, but they shot themselves in the foot by not delivering on ANY of the plots, subplots and secondary characters from S2, after the writers' strike was finally resolved. There were several shows that got what turned out to be the death blow from that strike, including our beloved Pushing Daisies.
I, too, had high hopes for S3, but I ended up completely hating Villains, mainly because the entire Petrelli family (which is obviously a huge part of the cast) behaved like completely idiotic, misanthropic loons. And I had a huge personal hate on for the character of Arthur Petrelli; I was glad to see him go.
Fugitives was better, but the entire show was becoming more and more the Sylar Variety Hour. I was enormously disappointed when they kept him around with the old switcheroo. However, the development of Tracy, and the Rebel storyline (especially seeing Micah!) were very encouraging.
I enjoyed the season 4 premiere, very much, in fact. I actually have renewed interest in Sylar, mainly the one living in Matt's head, because watching Matt turn to the dark side is gonna be kind of fun. Nathan turning back into a real physical and yet again nigh-omnipotent Sylar, not so much, though.
I'm intrigued by the shady grey aspect of the Carnival characters, and hopeful that they will focus on this, and individual character development this season, as opposed to vasty, nasty government and shadow government conspiracies, which is a horse they have flogged to DEATH and back again.
So, yeah, I still care. If you don't like it, then don't watch it. If enough people don't watch it, it'll get canceled, which may very well still happen.
But I get soooo tired of all the negativity from so many sf fans. Seriously.
By DarkWarrior at 1:37 PM ON 09/24/09
I think it was the rumor of the Girl-on-Girl kiss that pushed viewers away.
If it is true it,s cheap & shows the writers are painting Heroes into a corner.
Next to Supernatural it,s one of the best original tv series on air.
By phoenixjf at 1:42 PM ON 09/24/09
Honestly, you'd think Claire would learn. Still doing the falling and getting up when someone could see her thing? Seriously? The show deserves to die for not allowing any of the characters to truly learn and evolve. They're still doing the same things, making the same mistakes as they did in year one. With the difference that being older and wiser, they shouldn't be making those same mistakes.
It's getting tired, been done. Season Five would have had to be tremendously creative and innovative to save the show. The writers have managed to remove everything that I liked from the show like Hiro's ability (which he can't use these days and is now dying), Peter's ability to absorb powers continually for good, Mohinder's earnest quest for understanding (so they turned him into an ugly monster). There's nothing left, let it die. You've killed it with your insistance on making all the wrong decisions for where the show would go. I mourn the loss of a show that could have been truly great for years, had it been managed capably.
By M98Punk at 1:42 PM ON 09/24/09
SLOW!!!! I think the whole 2 hour kick off was premature and really was just because as everyone said the first hour should have been 15 minutes tops. We already know the characters! Show some action and maybe even *shock* a decent plot and character development. I mean the characters on the show jump from hero to heel quicker then WWE wrestlers. The thing that season one had was a theme the brought everything together and moved the story along. Every chapter since whatever the problem was that had to be solved was clunky and made the show slow down then speed up at almost random intervals.
By UniKyrn at 1:44 PM ON 09/24/09
Nope, quit caring near the beginning of season 3, having suffered through season 2. When this year came around, I noticed most of season 3 was still sitting on the DVR, unwatched. I asked the GF if she thought we'd ever actually watch it, and when she said no, I deleted it and removed it from the recording schedule.
By forge at 1:46 PM ON 09/24/09
This show is still on?
By Robert Barnett at 1:46 PM ON 09/24/09
Like so many other shows that had a good first year and then tanked the second on Hero's should have been axed after the poor second season.
Funny networks will give shows like Hero's chances and more chances and even keep shows so past their experiation date on the air for years (like CSI, Law and Order, etc.) but they wouldn't give Knight Rider a chance after they altered it to make it more like the original. An order for a 1/2 second season would have been enough to see if the changes made the last three episodes would have done it (I think it would have.) but know.
I don't watch network shows any more, they networks can cram themselves for all I care.

By hanhsolo at 1:46 PM ON 09/24/09
I stopped watching in the middle of season 2. The focus was too different from the first season, which was amazing and had the right balance. Having way too many irrevelant characters ruined it....we can't care about them anymore. :( It makes me sad.
By Kevin at 1:51 PM ON 09/24/09
When the writers decided that they could ignore characterization and just make characters do whatever they wanted (consider the schizoid performance of HRG and Nathan last year) it just became silly. Characters matter.
By drwhat at 1:53 PM ON 09/24/09
Still watching .
By john at 1:59 PM ON 09/24/09
I have watched every season until now. The last episode of season 4 was when I said, "I'm out." The Sylar/Nathan thing just went too far. HRG and Angela would never have let it happen much less encourage it. The writers totally threw out all the character development they had done.
So Heroes is over for me. I choose to see it in a positive light though. As far as I'm concerned Heroes was a spectacular mini-series that ended with the finale of season 1 where Peter and Nathan died in an explosion to save the world.
By drewr15 at 2:10 PM ON 09/24/09
Gave up halfway through last season, just awful. No plans to go back. Sorry.
By David at 2:27 PM ON 09/24/09
It was a little slow but hopefully the action will pick up this season. I have watched every episode and love the charactiers. I think the ratings thing is outdated. Personally I watch most of my shows online now and rarely watch on the TV. From Heroes, True Blood, Sons of Anarchy, to Warehouse 13 is all online now.
Heroes probably had better viewership than they realize. I heard Neilsen is working on it, but in the meantime it could kill our favorite shows.
By dscarron at 2:27 PM ON 09/24/09
That screaming sound would be me. Bellowing to just shut up and let this die. It was a one-hit wonder that attempted to be stretched for five seasons.
When you build up characters and then for no appearent reason they act against that character, that's not "drama" that's bad writing.
When you create characters and then for no appearent reason they go away that's not a strike that's bad writing.
When plot hooks or threads are resolved without any payoff, purpose or meaning that's bad writing.
This was a great idea that was killed in the crib.
Shut up and let this die. Now.
By Rose at 2:31 PM ON 09/24/09
Once I saw the first season finale where the culmination of everything was a fist fight with no powers, I realized the show creators had no idea how to tell a story. I think the first season was a fluke. Heroes will never be good again. Give it up.
By islesfan at 2:33 PM ON 09/24/09
Heroes jumped the shark during the second season (at least it wasn't like Fringe which jumped the shark in the first episode).
It's amazing that Chuck had to struggle to get renewal and Heroes keeps plodding along...
By cassi at 2:37 PM ON 09/24/09
No, not really. Season 1 was great but I've started to watch other shows during the season 2 and 3 disaster and I don't miss Heroes at all.
I gave Heroes one last chance and watched last season's finale and I was disappointed again.
There is just TOO much good and awesome genre stuff (Supernatural, Dexter, Flashforward, Lost, SGU, LotS, Glee, V) that I fear nothing will Heroes this season even if they would deliver the best season ever.
By John at 2:40 PM ON 09/24/09
I gave up after 10 minutes and went to Fox to watch House.
By antodav at 2:41 PM ON 09/24/09
I was thoroughly enthralled by Heroes 1st Season and I even enjoyed the second season, though it was admittedly not as good as the first. I eagerly anticipated season 3 but stopped watching when the show completely jumped the shark by "revealing" that Sylar was secretly Nathan and Peter's long-lost brother and that Arthur Petrelli was somehow still alive (not to mention also the revelation that Claire can't die—doesn't that render the whole "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" thing pointless?). I missed probably half the season before picking up again when the show came back at the beginning of this year, and surprisingly was quite good again. I thought the season premiere this week was OK and I will continue to watch the show. I do however need to go back and watch what I missed, because I still have no clue how Ando got powers or why Peter, who previously had just about every power imaginable, is now only able to have one at a time. Every show goes through its rough patches and I hope Heroes doesn't get canceled just as it's starting to get good again. It's clear they're trying to recall Season 1 and take the show back to its roots, although I don't know how successful they will be. I remember when that happened to Enterprise four years ago; I never really have gotten over it completely. I for one do still care, and will continue watching.
BTW you people who keep referring to season 4 in the past tense...I know it's confusing b/c of the writer's strike, but this IS Season 4, not season 5. The show premiered in 2006, Season 2 aired in fall of 2007 but was cut short, and season 3 was fall 2008-spring 2009. Let's not confuse people by suggesting this show has been on longer than it has, and then having them go around looking for a season on DVD/Blu-Ray that doesn't exist yet.
@islesfan What do you have against Fringe? And personally I'm astonished that Chuck even made it through its first season; the show is completely unoriginal (ever heard of Jake 2.0?) and not all that funny. Heroes and Fringe just about the only sci-fi shows on TV worth watching anymore, now that BSG is over. I'm not letting go of either of them until I'm forced to.

I'm not going to defend Heroes, but take a look at serial dramas as a whole.
Battlestar Galactica did very, very well on the whole, but there were some major dips in quality, particularly in the middle of season 3, and a lot of people are still nerd raging about the second half of season 4.
Each season of Prison Break is significantly worse than the season that preceeded it. Season 3 I would call tolerable, and I suspect filters would prevent me from describing season 4.
Dexter is also getting progressively worse with each season, though admittedly not by much.
24 was great for three seasons, and I love the first quarter of season 5, but beyond that, the show is pretty damn mediocre.
Going back a bit, but Babylon 5 was great until around season 4, where it completely petered out.
And the less said about Lost the better...
Just about the only serial dramas that are consistently good seem to 1) have mostly 12ish-episode seasons, or 2) be on HBO, or both. And a lot of those great HBO serial dramas seem to be cancelled after 2 or 3 seasons...
Sure, Heroes deserves to be poopooed, but it seems like the serial drama is the hardest type of show to keep consistently good, and is the easiest type of show to completely screw up.
Pretty much basing your first season on Watchmen means there isn't really anywhere to go but down, but Heroes is hardly the only serial drama with problems after the honeymoon.

IDo I care? Nope!! Just wake me when it over... (yawn)
By Gooserunner at 3:11 PM ON 09/24/09
Heroes blew it in season one. They had a real hig concept: regular people who suddenly had to deal with finding themselves with a super power. Instead it turned into a bad soap opera cartoon about the stupid Petrelli family. Just as agonizingly good-concept-gone-wrong as "The 4400", which also squandered its premise.
By usatimelord28524 at 3:14 PM ON 09/24/09
I blame the writers strike ever since the strike the show has took a downward spiral. So thanks to all those writers who ruined a good show. I continue to watch to see how it ends .
By Archeagus at 3:20 PM ON 09/24/09
This is Heroes last season? Don't tease me, woman! I really need this to be true! But if that's true, then I'll keep watching it to see if the leave off with the best episode of the series ... or continue their downward spiral of delivering the worst episode of the series, week after week.
By Worm 1957 at 3:35 PM ON 09/24/09
The 1st series was very good but I lost interest after that. The storyline became too convoluted and lacked focus.
There became no reason to watch it which is a shame as the 1st season was good and promised a lot.
It is an example of a series that has lasted too long - it should have finished a lot earlier.
By Kay at 3:47 PM ON 09/24/09
Heroes is a great show. Not perfect by any means. Any scripted drama has a difficult time maintaining momentum season after season. I'll keep watching.
What I don't understand is why folks who don't watch the show (even say they hate it) still read articles about it? I see this stuff on tvbythenumbers.com, too.
By Lehnsherr at 3:53 PM ON 09/24/09
I felt like a little kid watching season one. I said that it was going to be my all time favorite. (BSG Took the top spot) But fast forward to this season. It sat on the DVR for two days before I finally watched it. And I stopped it for a while to watch Top Chef. You don't need to be a super hero to see that there won't be another season.
By kryche at 3:57 PM ON 09/24/09
I still laugh at people who were comparing this show to LOST during it's first season. That's like comparing a Ferrari to a Pinto.
Guess there truly is no accounting for taste, just glad to see that the public finally woke up to just how cheesy and terrible this show was (from the very first episode).
By lujan at 4:07 PM ON 09/24/09
Not even to mention that TWO freaking hours WAY too long!
It certainly didn't leave me wanting more, like in previous seasons.
By a different tim at 4:10 PM ON 09/24/09
Yes lost was the pinto first and now heros is the neglected and a rusted out car. I have to say I agree with some of the negative comments. Sylar really just needs to be himself, pure badass. Forget this who am I crap. The heros need to be heros and lose their emo feelings of isolation and start kicking butt. Peter can do all of this amazing stuff and yet we barely see him doing anything. I hope they can turn it the show around because it could be a really great show. They just need to get back to there roots.
By Thellais at 4:25 PM ON 09/24/09
Ever since Chuck came out I stopped caring about Heroes. Its overdirected and underwritten in my opinion and just feels like a soap opera more than anything else.

By Graham at 4:43 PM ON 09/24/09
We were lucky in the UK when Heroes first aired because it was on the BBC - no ads. This has made me wait to see future series on DVD. It always puzzles me when the US networks say they are having a 2 hour premier. 90 minutes plus 30 for ads would be more accurate. Season 4 will not be on my TV until the box set is released.
By Taiso at 5:06 PM ON 09/24/09
LOST was NEVER the pinto. Ever. Splash cold water on your face and clear the cobwebs.
I was laughing my butt off when people were saying that Heroes even held a candle to LOST.
I tried watching Heroes and had no interest after the first four episodes of season one.
The show is a joke and has been since the very beginning.
I had LOST and BSG to satisfy me. How could a lame wannabe show like Heroes even hope to compare?
Die, Heroes, die. You sucked and you always have since the beginning.

By crichton007 at 5:30 PM ON 09/24/09
I think the problem is they've kept all the same actors and characters. I'm pretty tired of most of them and it seems like most of the story is a rehash of old stuff. At this rate I don't think there is anything that can be done to save Heroes or even NBC. Why they leave the same people in to drive the network further into the ground is a mystery to me.
By danjack at 5:35 PM ON 09/24/09
No. I don't care either. The only thing I wish is that they would kill stupid little Claire, and be done with it. The mandatory cheerleader type in this type of show has gotten really old.
Sylar is cool, but end the damn show already! No one cares.
By ATK at 5:39 PM ON 09/24/09
After last season I considered not even watching the season premier, but i did anyway and thought it didn't suck and was a decent opener. Yes their is room for improvement but i'm not going to over analyze it and replace it with "well they should have done this or that." It was definitly better that what had preceeded it and will continue to watch it.
By photoguy at 5:46 PM ON 09/24/09
It was too much like "Lost", with too many distracting side trips, flashbacks, bad writing, etc...
There are too many "shock and surprise" twists and turns in the story.
Never got into it at all.
By Kim at 5:58 PM ON 09/24/09
I'll probably watch until the very end of this series but I've gotten really sick of waiting for it to really *ROCK* again. I don't think there's much hope of that now.
I think Samuel and the carnies have potential. (Love Robert Knepper...) And I also want to see what comes of all this.
I liked the season 4 premiere but it had problems, no doubt. They can try rehashing season 1 to regain the magic only so many ways before it starts feeling desperate and sad.
By Matt25 at 6:30 PM ON 09/24/09
I am so mad at them for killing Danko that fast. Danko was the best character in Season 3, and they let him die right away!
By Hope_for_Heroes27 at 7:02 PM ON 09/24/09
I understand that people, especially those of the SciFi community, are going to have strong feelings for the pros and cons of Heroes, and for those here who have attempted to formulate some in depth and comprehensive view points, cudos. For those who just post things like, "Heroes Sux, blagh..." please for the love of God, get a hobbie.
Now, as to if I still care about Heroes? Well, yes, if only because I want to see the show redeem itself before it comes to an end. Too often shows that have heard thier own deathknell just sort off phone it in for what remains of their respective seasons, and I think for what Heroes tried to do before the show lost it's way it deserves better. As to how it lost it's way?
A previous post compared Heroes to trying to be like "Watchman", but aside from the whole New York going boom -which incendently was not the case in the graphic novel as it was instead a fake Alien- I would have to disagree. In point of fact, and many Comic fan sites like Ain't it Cool, etc, agreed with this assesment that Heroes was, in point of fact, trying to be X-Men: The Live action series, without having to pay Marvel all the royalties and other associated finacial requirements. Even Stan'the Man' Lee made more than one appearence on the show, as if to give a none to sublte wink to those who knew what the show was trying to be.
Now, much like the X-Men, the show should have followed the course it laid out in S1 by having the Heroes come together to defeat the S1 villian Sylar, and than remain together in S2 learning to use their powers to help mankind, with Mohinder filling the shoes of Charles Xavier, and to also show other people with powers how Humanity might come to accept them. The show could have still incorporated many elements from S2 and still stayed on track. Sadly, the Characters tried to go lead normal lives away from one another and too many new characters and sub-plots were introduced. The formulae should have remained simple, with the Heroes taking on a new Big Bad every season. They even could have kept Zachary Quinto around as Sylar, who frankly was just a clone of the Mr. Sinister character from the X-Men franchise.
To close, I share the assesment of many that this really 'does' need to be the final Season for Heroes. And, hey, four seasons is not a bad number to go out on. I simply hope that the writers will 'remember' what made S1 such a great start and that the network will let them take the show back to it's core foundation so that, at the end, we will be reminded of how incredible it was when we first heard, "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World."

Midway through watching the first episode of the season, I turned it off, deleted the program and cancelled the Season Pass. Nope, I'm just not interested in it any more.
By captainwhat at 8:21 PM ON 09/24/09
I have to look at Heroes as a fading relationship.
Occasionally something will remind me why I fell in love with Heroes, but then Heroes will do something to make me wonder why I'm still with it. I find myself avoiding the phone when Heroes calls, and instead checking the voice-mail after it's become a missed call (that's Hulu).
At night I lay awake in bed and wonder where things went wrong? Was I in denial? How long have my friends not liked Heroes? I close my eyes. Neither of us are really asleep. We're close in bed, but a gap we both recognize divides us. We know if we move closer to each other we might fall through the gaping hole between us that's been tearing apart.
Heroes tells me that it loves me. I find it harder each time to say the same, and after a moment I say the same. I steady my breathing so it thinks I'm asleep and stare at the wall as I hear it cry gently.

I have to admit, I wasn't pumped at the end of this episode. I liked the Hiro/Ando story and the Parkman/Sylar story (even though it was very Crichton/Harvey). I am curious to find out more about the circus and the compass... hopefully that will make the overall story a bit better.
I totally agree with the comments I always read on different articles "kill the cheerleader, save the show"... that whole guitar hero scene was stupid and pointless and she is just annoying and industriable...when Peter was indestructible, they took his powers away, but not Clair bear...she just does the same thing over and over again, and that was why they killed Niki (and she was way cooler then Tracy).
Hopefully in Hiro's attempts to fix what was wrong, he does something wrong to change things, and the Shanti virus does get released and we can see the future that the stupid Writers Strike illuminated. But that won't happen, its just a dream we can hope for.
I think the Writers Strike helped kill the show. I don't want to see it canceled. I want it to get better. Hopefully, if NBC decides to axe it, it gives Tim Kring the ability to give the show a proper ending since we invested 4 years our time into the show, and not cancel it on a cliffhanger ending like Sarah Connor, Invation and Primevil.

OK... to reitorate what I said in the other Heroes postings... I LOVE HEROES HANDS DOWN. Or at least... I did in season 1.
Season 2... I choose to forget as a bad dream due to the writers strike. (As someone said above, the twins from South America=yawn fest. I couldn't hope more for Sylar to kill them both. Although Dania Ramirez is easy on the eyes, every time she opened her mouth, well... gotta love the mute button. The girl from NO... why was she on the show? I mean... if you want people to respond to Hurricane Katrina victims, I'm all for that, but have the actors do an infomercial lead-in to the show. To have a character just to bring those issues onto the show... well it just seemed exploitative.)
Season 3... PART 1(This is where things go wrong...) was a GREAT IDEA. I LOVED THE WHOLE VILLIANS IDEA! It would've rocked... if...
1) we actually CARED about who the villians were...
2) maybe before 1... we actually learn why they are villians...?? Just a thought here. Sometimes the beginning of the story really SHOULD BE THE BEGINNING!!
3) Papa Patrelli is the big bad? REALLY??? And why does that mean anything to me as a viewer when he hasn't been talked about since season 1???
4) Season 3... Part 2....
Uhhmm... guys... trying to tell two completely different stories within the same season... well... seems excessive for a show that takes a full season to get from beginning to end. Just a thought here... Maybe that formula worked for a reason!!!!
I don't understand... my expectations aren't high when watching the show, and yet it finds new ways to disappoint.
I think I'm in the minority here... but will I ever actually get to see Masi Oka do some real character acting? Or is he to be the big child for the run of the show? Talk about wasted talent...
I'm still watching the show.. but it's like a root canal now. The tooth is still being pulled... year... after year..
By tumblebusman at 9:36 PM ON 09/24/09
Based on the number of comments listed. The show must still be somewhat popular. It is true that most of the time on tv, and I consider myself to be somewhat addicted to tv, that writers have not a clue as to what the hell they are doing. No plan, no design and no way of fixing a problem that they create. Now I can't write at all but I do know a good story and while this show had all the promise in the world it has become a terrible excuse of a good show.
By -jb at 10:54 PM ON 09/24/09
I've seen every episode, but was seriously considering dropping out 'til I read this. I now join the ranks of those who know the show's gotten weak but are just hanging on to see how it ends...
By Gilveron at 11:21 PM ON 09/24/09
I hate to say it, but I forgot this even premiered on Monday. I was watching House, and I realized that Heroes was on and I had forgotten to set it to record. And then I realized I wasn't upset by the error. I suppose I could watch it on Hulu, but I just don't feel the need. I disagree with the author, I think the moment the series was ruined for me was when Sylar killed Nathan and then they morphed Sylar into him. And Hiro and Ando have been nothing but cloying and annoying for the last three seasons.
By Kim at 11:43 PM ON 09/24/09
I think the majority of people who gripe about this show are just pissed off that their 'favorite scifi series' did an about-face and betrayed them. And they're still tuning in to see if it can at least put a smile on their faces one more time.
That's me, anyway.
By Quinn22 at 12:49 AM ON 09/25/09
So nobody cares about Heroes, but everyone has to take time to post that they don't.
Yes, Heroes lost its way. But once it's gone it will be missed for what it brought us in season 1 and the promise it had for television Sci-Fi. Too many "fans" are quick to attack and condem this show,
I will be watching till the end
By SomeCoolName at 1:35 AM ON 09/25/09
You know what really bothers me about the show. Which I am sure some one will point out that some of the writers are comic writers themselves. But all the stories are rehashed comics. Let just take season 3. The same story from the mini series "EARTH X" by Marvel. Where every one becomes super story line right down to Reed Richards son tricked into believing he was Galactus. There are other places to go story wise. Hell even the "Save the cheerleader save the world bit was from 80's scifi tv show called Misfit's of Science.
With that all said. I am a sucker, and I will watch till the end. When it comes down to it. I don't have any other shows to watch. Why are all the good shows Canceled? GOD I MISS ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT!! C'MON!
By DJ Jarak at 3:55 AM ON 09/25/09
THE REASON FOR THE POOR RATINGS IS LAZY PROMOTERS. THEY'RE NOT PROMOTING THE SERIES NEARLY ENOUGH. THAT IS ALWAYS THE REASON FOR POOR RATINGS FOR ANY SHOW... THAT IS UNLESS THE SHOW SUCKS WHICH HEROES DOES NOT. HEROES ROCKS!
By udinas at 4:26 AM ON 09/25/09
Why the suprise about nathan going evil? Haven't they introduced him (being evil) in season one? It was nothing but expected and i personally like that concept.
By KLD at 4:53 AM ON 09/25/09
Sticking with it. Like the author, there are parts and characters I like and some of both I dislike. Would have loved to have seen Danko suffer more -- he was just evil.
By PALADIN at 7:35 AM ON 09/25/09
I gave up on 'Heroes' mid-way thru the execrable 2nd season, and have no interest in going back for more plot misfires.
Ttue, the series at it`s best was very good, and has characters that are intriguing; but the sum just does not equal the worth of it`s parts.
My Suggestion: spin-off a few characters in their own series and euthanize the parent series before it sinks (or STINKS) any farther.
How about a comedy/action/adventure called 'HIRO`S' about a heroically determined, yet clumsy and naive japanese guy with super powers? Just HIM ( and pal Ando) trying to save people and master the english langauage !
Maybe a show called "Cheerleader", about an indestructible girl who wants to be assertive , save lives and have fun in college ?
Any one of several 'Heroes' characters would work far better on their own than crammed into the mess the series became years ago.
By Russell22w at 7:52 AM ON 09/25/09
I actually liked season 2 of Heroes although not as much as the first. I persinally thought that kring should have changed the show evry 2 years or so introducing new Heroes who had similar problems to the characters in the original. I still enjoy Heroes for the most part but nowhere nr the amount i used to. I actually thought the Villians arc was more interesting than the Fugitives one. the last 3 episodes of season 3 were just plain dull and it was clear NBC were pulling the purse strings a bit as there was hardly any FX or action at all by the end.
By diesel at 8:04 AM ON 09/25/09
I'm still watching Heroes. I like the character Hiro but wished he had his full powers back. I think the same with Peter. The show could be a lot better. I like that Peter and Hiro are finally doing heroic stuff again.
Unfortunately, there are not that many good shows out now. I like Smallville a lot better than Heroes but Smallville needs more action. Both series messed up their season finales by having the battles with the big bads too short.
That said I think Fox / Marvel should team up and create a live action Xmen series. They need to stay true to the comic books and have lots of action. There is so much material that having good stories and character development should be easy.

HEROES needs a Big Bad that wants to wreck the world or fix it by wrecking it. Someone that makes most of them band together to fight him/her/them off. With the company off the job where are all the interesting evil-dooers?
Seriously in a world where lots of people have powers the chances of lots of them being bad is high.
Stop with all the petty soap opera stuff, is my wife banging the water guy, I want to get even with the people who tried to kill me but never really could, I want a psychopath as my son and get to some big action stuff.
Step it up!

So Claire has been a part of saving the world several times, has learned her blood can bring back the dead and has a father capable of raining hell on anyone who makes her life difficult, but she is still moping around.
Hiro, who, in the first season had been using his powers well into adulthood and travelled back in time to give the key element of the first season "Save the cheerleader..." And now he struggles to travel through time and is dying, not to mention his getting frozen multiple times.
HRG is as good as ever, being the rebel of the group, but his wife, the dog nut, is likely with another man now.
Peter can't use multiple powers anymore and is spending every waking moment saving lives, but feeling bad he can't save them...better?
What happened to ordinary people facing extraordinary situations? What happend to standing up to the dangers in the world and looking for the truth?
Now even Matt, who is a cop again and not a ridiculed one, is running around like a schizo talking to Sylar and controlling the mind of a delivery guy.
The first season gave us a great hook and introduced us to characters who felt the need to be something more. Now they're like soap opera characters who over dramatize their lives and do little that matters.
These are super powered people! I keep seeing superman deciding how important it is to be a plain reporter and making every effort to stumble around making excuses why he shouldn't do anything "extraordinary".
Heroes, you had potential and decades of comic superheroes to work with, but decided to make the extraordinary - ordinary.
Have fun in your last season.

Let's face it, it's over and that is sad. But what is more disturbing is the 'fair weather' attitude viewers are beginning to have when it comes to ambitious shows like Heroes. There have been a lot of shows that haven't been that good but some stuck around due to a loyalty factor. People didn't get on that 'know-it-all, short attention span, trendy, hateful speak, bandwagon. They pulled for their shows. That is apparently not the case anymore. This doesn't mean Heroes doesn't deserve some of the criticism directed toward it. But seriously, it's a fantasy show about ordinary people with super powers, c'mon. Now that the novelty of the coveted First Season has worn off, it automatically sucks? Okay, if you say soon but be aware, this is not a good sign for sci-fi, adventure shows in the future. Because once Heroes is gone and Lost is done, studio executives are going to be paying close attention to our finicky viewing habits and attitudes, and once again we're going to be stuck with little or nothing, or a plethora of lame 'reality shows'. Don't think for a second The Sci-Fi (not syfy) Channel can cover everything. If that were the case Heroes and Lost would have debut on Sci-Fi instead of NBC and ABC. That's where we're at, folks. Be very careful what you wish for.
By kchenault at 1:14 PM ON 09/25/09
Didn't read all the ones before so forgive if it has already been said. I think Peter's ability has always been one power at a time. He just happened to run into Sylar, whose power is copying multiple powers at a time. Want the old Pete back he needs to touch Nathan/Sylar again and take the multiple power ability again. As for the show, it is obvious that Claire's roommate was murdered by the creepy new roommate so she could be close to her idol. The second half of ep 1 was better than the first half.
By wren at 1:29 PM ON 09/25/09
I keep watching this show only to see Peter. I have some hopes for the carnival people. This will probably be the last season unless some miracle happens. I was expecting a miracle from season 3 however and I was sadly disappointed. Heroes is becoming that really bad movie on late night tv. You keep watching because you are hoping it gets better and then you finish watching it because you've invested so much time you have to know how it ends.
By onespacedcadet at 3:18 PM ON 09/25/09
Just get rid of Ali Larters character she freaking stinks
By Beggly at 6:39 PM ON 09/25/09
I'm conflicted about Heroes. I liked some of the premiere, but not all of it.
They need to get a direction and move toward it, something heroic, not this dark conspiracy running around in denial bull they have been doing.
They need to form a group. Become Crimebusters: Who ya gonna call? or something. Anything but this flailing about.
One thing that might help would be cutting down on characters. If they are not going to be involved in a team, getting rid of two or three characters might firm up the drama a bit.
By Alice at 8:10 PM ON 09/25/09
Of course I care, I love this show I really liked the premiere of S4 i dont want it to be the final season ,it pains me to say that Heroes is that show which had a big potential to become the best show on tv, unfortunately Tim Kring made lots of mistakes, the writing was bad in s2 and s3 :( i'll go down with this ship, love it so much to give it up now
By Bosie at 8:20 PM ON 09/25/09
GOSH, this article sums it up....I'm dessapointed with the show. They get great charaters only to waste them runnign aroudn liek headless chickens. It is a joke with my friends...we coudl watch the 1st episode and the season's finale's and stil be able to caught up witht he show's story line....teh writers are horrible and the producers....don't give a rats about the fans.
By HeroesFanboy at 10:00 PM ON 09/25/09
This will probably be the last season for Heroes. I'll watch until the end. It's too bad that the creators didn't take the time to map out where they wanted to go with the storyline for the entire series. Something where the writers could reference major plot points to be consistent. But we'll always have the first season, Sigh.
BTW, Peter always had the ability to collect multiple powers, he lost it when his Dad stole all of his powers during the Villians Arc. He only got his new power abilities when he injected himself with the formula that they were working on (that's how Ando got his power too).
By tigerfire2002 at 10:46 AM ON 09/26/09
I'm not a fan of the Claire storyline, whereever it might lead. She complains to much for me.
I however LOVE the Sylar/Matt interactions. I'm very happy the Sylar gets to play mind games again. I think ZQ nailed the creepiness needed for those scenes perfectly. I saw an interview with some of the actors and it looks like "Nathan" gets killed (again) but Sylar, who can't die, comes back as Sylar but doesn't remember who he is and gets taken in by Samuel. I think that will be good because Samuel seems like an awesome addition to this season.
By annie at 3:03 PM ON 09/26/09
i just love the show cause adrian pasdar and milo ventimiglia are in it... but all of you are right the show lost his magic since season 3
By dfwasian at 3:27 PM ON 09/26/09
I loved the first season, and after the second season, I gave up. The characters did not grow. I stopped watching it last season, and when I watched it on Monday, I realized that there are a bunch of lazy writers doing this series. The characters are the same. Same storyline - heroes are getting hunted, Peter is one dimensional, Claire is still annoying stupid, etc etc. I hope this is the last season. The series is like a bad day time soup... you don't miss anything even if you don't watch it for a whole season. You will catch up after 2 minutes - because the story lines are not changing.
By Kim at 3:38 PM ON 09/26/09
They've painted themselves into a corner. They strayed too far from the magical recipe of season 1 and are now trying to regain it by bringing the characters back to square one... which isn't working the way they thought it would.
I thought the S4 premiere was 'okay' but whoever said the show has a bunch of lazy writers is right.
By gayle at 4:15 PM ON 09/26/09
I think Heroes has gotten BETTER with season 3 and the new season looks great. I have watched the first 2 epidodes of the new season online as I`m UK but they were really good ok if your not a Claire fan then you`d not like her jump but I`m sure there will be more to come from her characterwise.
Now that they have reverted to the way season one was for the characters I am confident that Heroes will make a big comeback - so in summing up I say give it a chance it is improving all the time you will love the new characters Samuel in particular stands out for me as well as the new speedster and Milo is going to kick a** this season
HEROES ROCKS!!!
By jenny at 4:52 PM ON 09/26/09
Yes, I'm still watching and I still care. Otherside, I wouldn't have read all these comments. For a show no one cares about, people sure devote a lot of time and energy to it!! I think maybe they just like to complain and analyze and analyze.. I don't think the ratings are especially relevant any more. There are too many ways to watch a show. Someone needs to develop a better way of assessing the popularity of tv.
I'm a fan and plan to remain one.
By the way, I am a person but I can never read your captcha things!!!

i do care because Heroes is a GREAT show
By missed the point at 11:55 AM ON 09/27/09
i'm sure this won't be seen at this point but, i'm going to say it anyhow. in season one the "save the cheerleader save the world" was from a future that was changed. the thing is hiro was still in it so why now is he dying. thats the whole problem with the series is lack of continuity. peters on and off again powers. the three sisters. instead of intelligent writing it seems they had an idea for a show they had no confidence in returning for more seasons. so if the writers or anyone reads this. "write every season like it's the last" maybe you'll find inspiration and heroes can make sence again. at the very least be something to look foreward to again.
By Croft at 3:36 PM ON 09/27/09
I really wanted to care about Heroes, but I got to about 40 minutes into the premiere and found myself skipping ahead to see if it was actually going somewhere. It felt slow and boring and nothing happened... crappy writing and directing imho, they needed to start it off with a bang and get people excited about what was going on, not that boring mess they actually aired. I'm not hopeful it will pick up either, unfortunately.
By Rachela at 3:46 PM ON 09/27/09
I still believe in Heroes! I didn't think the premiere was the best, but the writers are still imaginative people. And maybe, if we give them the benefit of the doubt, then some of those flashes of brilliancy we've been seeing since Season 2 will form into a truly brilliant season. I believe the Sylar/Nathan dynamic is going to be awesome, and Hiro's struggle with mortality will be a great focus point.
By Jeff at 6:11 PM ON 09/27/09
Judging by how long it took me to get to the bottom of this page, people care a lot!
The problem with Heroes is TV. TV makes all Sci Fi or fantasy into a big conspiracy theory with elaborate never ending quests for the keymaster and then the gatekeeper.
ANYTHING BUT THE SUBJECT, heroes actually battling villains. TV gives you heroes trying to be people. Comic books give you heroes fighting villains and even other heroes. Movies do better to, because they don't have time for all the conspiracy crap.
But I like Heroes. They just need to understand that it doesn't take a real special effects budget to show off basic superhero feats of speed ad strength. Super duper tattoo dude means nothing to me. Absolutely nothing.
By aquaman2 at 10:37 AM ON 09/28/09
Dear Mr Kring,
What happened to the joy? It is obvious that you do not enjoy writing or producing this series any more. How sad for all of us that used to enjoy the thrill and wonder of Heroes. I can not watch any more while you completely remove any joy these people have for having their special powers. Even Peter shows no joy in saving people. Oh to be able to fly! Oh to be able to help with a special powers!
I am sad for you Mr. Kring... your lack of joy is unwatchable.
By Yeah at 10:59 AM ON 09/28/09

Whoever mentioned the lack of continuity in "Heroes" is dead on. That's been a real problem since season 2.
By Naeem Mosi at 11:36 PM ON 09/28/09
Unfortunately, I am one of those unwavering lemming like fans who blindly follow the writers on what has not been not a roller coaster of a ride, but more like splash mountain. Season 1 was arguably might be the greatest opening season in science fiction history. And contrary to what seems to be the general concensus, I enjoyed season 2. I also really liked the season 3 premier, which produced a few very intriguing story arcs.
1: The title aspect of heroes becoming villains, and vice-versa.
2: The alternate tangent in which everyone had abilities
3: A big showdown battle of Arthur Petrelli and pinehearst vs. the Angela and her gang.
However the last few episodes and the season finale, were slow boring and anticlimactic. Furthermore don't even get me started on fugitives. The past few years I agonized all summer for the return of two things football and Heroes. Surprisingly this year I was looking forward to dollhouse more so than heroes. A show that really only had one great episode which wasn't even aired and barely even featured the stars of the show, but thats an entirely different pointless rant of mine. Bottom Line, I have given up hope for any kind of resurrection of this series, this will undoubtedly be he last season. All I ask is that Tim Kring give us one final epic battle between Peter and Silar, and when the time comes maybe twenty years from now the producers who decide to give us the heroes reboot get it right and can sustain the magic for more than one season, and not give us some half-ass attempt like knight rider.
By Ranshiza at 11:19 AM ON 09/29/09
Do I care? Actually, yes, but only because I have been wanting to see it canceled since the season two premiere... It was a great show for season one, but that is where it should have eneded.

I've finally figured heroes out .....
Years ago, I saw a movie called Home Alone. It kept going on and on, with nothing happening. After an hour of that, I was ready to walk out, but my date (who had an amazing rack) tole me she would get a headache if we left, so i stayed.
Suddenly, all this stuff started happening; the climax. I laughed my head off, and realized all the boring stuff before was necessary to set up that awesome climax.
After seeing the seson premiere of heroes, I realized it's just like Home Alone; except there's never a climax.
How stupid is it that every main character has decided to reset the clock and go back to some semblance of a "normal" life? Give me a break.
More importantly, nothing ever happens.
Nothing ever happens.
Superheroes are about action.
Action.
Are you reading this, producers?
Action.
By Vega at 7:22 PM ON 10/05/09
I fell in love with the first season of heroes and have watched the show fall downhill since then.
I think another main factor that has effected the show is that after the first season we expected the characters powers and idenities grow but they haven't. They've actually nuked Peter's and Hiros powers since the first season. Maybe the writers thought these charaters were too powerful but thats what peoples wanted to see! If anything more powerful Villians should have been introduced to the show.
As you mentioned Kathie, This season's "Redemption" seems to be moving slowly and in the same negative direction the previous seasons have moved (sad to say).
At the end of season one people expected a big fight for NYC with Peter and Sylar but our hopes were let down and have been ever since. I hope they come to their senses and move the show towards the light. I still love the characters and maybe thats why I still watch but how much can the last 6 million viewers take?
By TheGhost at 10:00 PM ON 10/06/09
I'm very sad at what's happened to the show. The creators don't seem to know what to do with it anymore. It is unnerving to hear people talk about how this will probably be it's last season but I have to accept things for what they are. Such promise. I don't understand how things have gone so wrong. The writers seem to have gotten so caught up in the show's season one hype that they forgot that a show isn't good just because of its name. The writers are what make it watchable. They thought they could give us anything and we'd watch (like w/ "Generations", though I didn't think it was that bad). Then they just started making it up as they went along, trying what they could to please the viewers and get back ratings ("Villains" and "Fugitives"). Now it feels like the writers are sleep walking. There are so many things they could do w/ the story but for some reason they aren't thinking about it.
They need to bring the Company back, give Peter his original powers back (the reason, Kathie, that Peter didn't stop time is because he can't...he's limited to one power per touch now), create a new villain w/ a clear agenda, get rid of Sylar for a while, and map out where it's going from beginning to end as to avoid the "Lost" syndrome.
Still, all the suggestions and ideas in the world won't help. This show is on failing legs. That's too bad. Look's like there is one less show for me to watch once this season is finished.

Season Four was a flipping the bird from the writers to anyone still watching. After the season finale, I knew I'd never watch another episode!
