How did Amanda Tapping produce, direct and act in Sanctuary?

Amanda Tapping directed one episode of Stargate SG-1 and always told us she wanted to helm another but never got the chance. So it helps that she's the executive producer of her own show now—Syfy's Sanctuary—and can finally step behind the camera again for an upcoming episode.

Besides producing, Tapping also stars as the creature-loving immortal scientist Dr. Helen Magnus, and she'll direct the seventh episode of the new second season, called "Veritas."

"It was an appropriate episode for me to direct; I think that they must have planned it that way," Tapping said in an exclusive interview. "It was perhaps [director and executive producer] Martin's [Wood] way of torturing me."

"Veritas" was written by Alan McCullough, who scripted three of last year's 13 Sanctuary episodes and also wrote for Stargate Atlantis and Stargate SG-1. In the show, Tapping's normally stable and aloof character seems to slowly slip into insanity and becomes more and more crazy.

"I guess I felt like I was going a little crazy," Tapping said with a laugh. "I kept thinking, 'Am I nuts wanting to direct this?' I didn't want to mess it up. It's about Magnus going crazy, going completely off the rail."

Tapping's first directing gig was SG-1's "Resurrection." "I learned a lot on Stargate," she said. "I had a great experience directing that show, and I've been shadowing Martin for so long."

Wood said he would let her direct every other episode if he could. "She does some incredible work, and I find that her style is very close to mine," he said.

The original plan was for Tapping to helm a Magnus-light storyline, but as the filming grew closer, the focus on her character grew. "We forced her to do perhaps one of the hardest things to do, because if she was just playing her character regularly, it would have been easy, but this time she had to lose it, and she was doing it without supervision," Wood said. "No one was telling her if it was far enough or too far, or how much she should push it."

Wood was prepping the next episode and dropped in when he could, and the show's co-creator and executive producer Damian Kindler watched when he could, too. But when they asked Tapping if she needed help, she'd say, "No, I'm good."

"She just turned in her episode after editing it herself, too, and it just blew us away. It was magnificent," Kindler said. "She did an absolutely first-class job and proved she is a skillful shot-maker, a good director and editor and a clever and intuitive person. If she every wanted to do a career shift, she would make a great director."

Like one of the creatures the Sanctuary houses, Kindler added, "If we could clone Amanda, we would need four of her."

Co-star, Robin Dunne, who plays Dr. Will Zimmerman, said, "Amanda continually surprises me. As an actor she's someone to look up to, but as a director she was equally passionate and generous."

Dunne and Tapping are known for cracking each other up during their most intimate scenes together, but for her Sanctuary directorial debut, Dunne was on his best behavior. "There was no goofing off on that one, I believe," Dunne said.

After all, she is the boss.

Sanctuary returns Oct. 9 and airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Amazing woman, crappy show.

"How did Amanda Tapping produce, direct and act in Sanctuary?"

A: Badly.

Admittedly, her acting gets better in the later episodes but we are talking the difference from wood to plastic.

She is the weak link on the show, actingwise.

By mikymik38 at 10:51 AM ON 09/11/09

I don't understand how absolutly none of Amanda's talent translates to Sanctuary. She was so awesome in SG1, but Sanctuary is just boring, as is Warehouse 13 and every single SyFy Original movie. Might as well play 24 hours of First Wave, cause I won't tune in till SGU and Caprica are on. Right now the only thing worth watching on SyFy is Eureka, why don't they pick up Virtuality, its really good and the hack of a show Defying Gravity is its retarted little brother

Amazing actress. Great show.

Amanda is a brilliant actress and an amazing woman. She's an inspiration, and I wish everyone could see it for themselves.

By mynameisme91 at 11:22 AM ON 09/11/09

I agree with Justine! She is so amazingly talented and her ability to switch roles from Acting -> Producing -> Directing is nothing short of incredible. Everything she does she does with grace and skill. Anyone doubting her abilities need only look at her work to see that. She is a pioneer for women in TV and should be treated with the highest respect. LONG LIVE SANCTUARY!

I enjoy reading about the inside acting, writing, and directing craft that goes into our SyFy staples. It's a good reminder that its a lot more than CGI.

I'm pretty sure msk417, dscarron, and mikymik38 are watching a different show than I am. I think Amanda's acting is great, and an improvement over her work on SG-1 - which wasn't shabby. She's showing more depth, she's stretching herself, and I think she's doing a great job.

Amanda is a remarkable person who lives (and thus works) with an abundantly full palette in the artistic spectrum of life. She's vibrant, creative, hilarious, warm, passionate, engaged, generous, wise, patient, and most of all present -- on all levels. A true powerhouse -- something the titles executive producer and director now acknowledge. Although she's certainly grown over the years in experience, responsibility, opportunities she's created and risks she's taken, she's been a layered, dynamic powerhouse of talent, passion and wisdom all along. Brava, Amanda! Truly. Brava.

Thank you so much to SyFy for renewing Sanctuary. It's one of a very few shows I watch.

Also for conducting and posting this interview.

ckale, I am pretty sure that I am talking about Sanctuary. I must admit though that I was only able to get through the first few episodes before I could not take any more. It just was not for me, I guess. I am sure there are many great people working on this show, but it is sub-par.

By sanctuary4all at 4:02 PM ON 09/11/09

Amanda is amazing --thats how she does it all ;)
The show is fabulous and I can't wait for season 2 to start already!! Thank you Stage 3 & SYFY for a season 2. Here's hoping and wishing for seasons 3 & 4 & 5 & 6 &.....Love you guys!

By Sanctuaryforall at 4:52 PM ON 09/11/09

msk417: We all have different opinions, so it's fine if Sanctuary isn't for you. I'd just suggest watching the later episodes of the show because they are AWESOME. The first couple episodes were basically rewrites of the webisodes, so they had to squeeze a bunch of stuff in that they normally wouldn't do for the actual episodes and, admittedly, they're a little slow and sometimes random. If you watch any, check out Requiem. Amazing acting and interesting storyline.

Also, season 2 looks like it's going to be AMAZING. It looks like it's going to exceed the later half of season 1, which will be hard to do.

I'm quoting someone here, but...

Amanda is made of awesome!

She's really the first and only actor I have looked up to. She continues to be my hero, my role model. Long live Sanctuary!

(((amanda))) super cool chick. :D

By bdaul at 9:46 PM ON 09/11/09

I hope she has been doing an immersive with her English accent. Gads, the worst accent I have ever EVER heard...who was her accent coach, some crazed Polish drug addict?

By sanctuary4all at 10:29 PM ON 09/11/09

ya know bdaul... she was BORN in England and raised by ENGLISH parents. I would assume she may have heard the accent growing up her whole life. How bout you?? I can see what YOU learned while you were a child.....
She sounds awesome.

By JenniferJensen at 1:16 AM ON 09/12/09

I am really looking forward to Veritas! Amanda is an amazing actress and I would highly reccomend meeting in her in person. Such a warm, bubbly personality.

Sanctuary is an amazing show and I hope for many more seasons!

By #1SYFYBUFFER at 7:11 AM ON 09/12/09

I love her and the show. Haven't seen too much on Syfy that I don't like. Some of you people need to get you heads out (if you get my drift).

By mangababe at 6:15 PM ON 09/12/09

I politely have to disagree. Sanctuary is one of the best shows on TV right now. I can't wait for S2! If "Veritas" is anything like last season's "Requiem", the episode should be amazing.

By suse at 6:25 PM ON 09/12/09

Just so people know, she chose that accent because while Helen is from Victorian England, she has lived all over the world and picked up other accents that have softened hers. Dude, I was in London for 2 weeks and could feel my tongue placing differently in my mouth. And have an odd mixture of Northern/Southern USA accent from moving as a kid. And she's 158 and has been living around the world a good 100 years or so years. Just get over that it's not AT's normal accent. She does a great job. She does note that when she uses and American accent (Requiem comes to mind) it's a conscious choice - Helen is mocking Will.

As was pointed out, all of her family is English. They (parents, aunts, grandmother) emmigrated in the 1960s. I'd think she knows the accent.

By magnusminion at 12:11 AM ON 09/13/09

Amanda can do anything she puts her heart and mind to...she is amazing and I eagerly anticipate season 2, especially Veritas!
