Is this what Nicolas Cage's Superman would have looked like?

Is this what Nicolas Cage\'s \<i\>Superman\<\/i\> would have looked like?

If you think Superman Returns is bad ... (which we don't, BTW, but that's another story) ... imagine how much more awful it would have been if Tim Burton had been allowed to make his Nicolas Cage version of the movie. At least if we are to judge by this Japanese fan video, which is sweeping the Internet; watch it after the jump.

The concept designs and images lead up to what appears to be a test photo of Cage, replete with his stringy Con Air hair, in a Burtonized Superman outfit, and the entire effect is ghastly and horrible.

Personally, I think the image of Cage is a fake, but I can't prove it, and in any case enough people think it's genuine to warrant a collective sigh of relief. Enjoy the disaster that might have been.

(Thanks to Devin at C.H.U.D. for finding it first.)

I liked Superman Returns for the most part. Got a little stupid at the end with everyone falling in the water and everyone saying "we have to go back/i have to go back". In general it was too lightweight. Brandon Routh was great and it had some great set pieces but Superman's a heavy hitter, his movie should be too.

I can only assume that video is a joke—many things coming out of Japan are, after all; they have a very strange sense of humor over there. Superman's costume looks very, shall we say, effeminate, and the other costumes...I can only assume that's Lex Luthor, although he's not Kryptonian (except in J.J. Abrams's bizarre Superman script) so I have no explanation for his silver suit.

Superman Returns is a woefully underrated film. It had fantastic special effects, well-rounded, dynamic characters, an excellent performance by Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, and strong spiritual themes that in my mind make it the best of the Superman movies. Plus it really did not do that badly at the box office; why they feel the need to reboot the franchise instead of continuing on with it I have no idea. As if Superman hasn't been rebooted enough times in recent history—Smallville is still around, unfortunately, after all!

Come on, that's a fake! Which then calls into question the validity of everything else shown.

By lastmass at 2:43 PM ON 09/23/09

I think that maybe real guys. This footage isvery old and i've seen those pics before. Way before they even got superman returns in motion. If it is fake then its an old fake but one thats been on the web for awhile.

By Hahaha at 3:37 PM ON 09/23/09

Oh STOP!!! I can't take a breath.....

That last picture looked like Marlyn Manson with no makeup! Wahahahahahaha....

By mhochman at 3:51 PM ON 09/23/09

The "S" doesn't stand for Superman, it's SHINYMAN!

By Gerry at 3:59 PM ON 09/23/09

The sketches look like they could be Jor-El, and real.

The photoshopped pic of Cage is clearly faked.

By Hank Jekyll at 4:49 PM ON 09/23/09

LOLOLOL thats has to be one of the funniest picture build ups ive ever seen! I was waiting to see the possibly fake pic of Nic Cage then I saw it and laughed out loud in the office, i can almost picture him saying "Wha?"

By Hank Jekyll at 4:52 PM ON 09/23/09

2nd thing...@SyFy dont you think you might want to make sure that Tim Burton was behind this before you say he was? I mean, why you wanna drag Burton down? The Superman suit is pretty terrible and Burton doesnt do terrible.

By DJ Jarak at 5:00 PM ON 09/23/09

Shame on you. Shame!

By Alverant at 5:00 PM ON 09/23/09

Well it's more original than Superman Returns. How can you not say it was a bad movie? It was worse than Transformers 2! It was dull. Superman is Superman. He can't be hurt except for a "rare" crystal that Luther always seems to be able to find and does Supes ever think, "I wonder if Lex has Kryptonite? He did all those other times. Maybe he ran out." I was very disappointed in the movie.

By Markus Zeller at 5:01 PM ON 09/23/09

Superman returns is a great movie - especially when watching the classic movies before! The similarities of the actors are awesome great! Also it is funny and the effects are well done.

NC has two uncomparable special abilities: Look angry or look sad.

By Alacrity Fitzhugh at 5:46 PM ON 09/23/09

The concept art is real, and has been floating around the net for awhile. The Cage shot is fake, though; looks like a Supergirl action figure with a 'shopped Cage head on it.

By Abraxsis at 6:16 PM ON 09/23/09

That clip was nearly as stupid as the script for Superman Returns.
Hang on, wait a minute. Nothings as stupid as the script for Superman Retuns, it's just not possible.

By SighFighGuy at 6:32 PM ON 09/23/09

Superman Returns was horrible. He had KRYPTONITE IN HIS BACK PEOPLE!!! That completely grabbed the Superman lore by the face and kneed it to the ground. The guy has no power around Kryptonite. He can't pick up a wet noodle much less a continent and then launch it into space.

By superfly at 6:47 PM ON 09/23/09

Superman Returns was BS!! He didn't know of Lex Luthor or his plot till the very end. What kind of poor writing is that? Lois was BS and so was Baby superman. I had no idea what was going on between the beginning and end in that movie. One of the worst superman's ever and its not even Brandon Routh's fault.

I would love a Nicholas Cage Superman. - directed by Riddley Scott. I'm getting sick of Tim Burton movies that aren't his originals, but adaptations of things I saw when I was a kid (like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). If tim burton made this movie no doubt Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham carter would be forced into it....and I can't stand them anymore either.

We need a new Superman that isn't a clone of Reeves. Nicholas Cage would be great!

By Allison&Jack at 6:57 PM ON 09/23/09

I am of the opinion that the franchise (and character) need to go out of sight for the next 20 or so years. Much like Star Trek.

By hermy at 7:15 PM ON 09/23/09

most fans know superman returns was a love letter to richard donner.it was ok,could have been better.who's to say tim burtons version would have sucked.maybe?i'd like to see a comic book version of it.like kevin smith said when he was involved early on jon peter's wanted to reinvent superman to something we'd not even recognize.and from what i've seen on the history of superman extra's. if the pics are fakes there close to what they showd on the dvd.when jon peter's was talking about his goofy idea's for superman.i like nick cage.i could never see him as superman.

By photoguy at 7:44 PM ON 09/23/09

First off. I dont know about the concept, and whether its a "would have been", but the last pic wiith a doll and cages face is an obvious super-imposition.

and...

Burton does well with oddball concepts, but the "man of steel" is not an oddball concept, unless its a superman from bizzaro universe.

By Hermano at 9:16 PM ON 09/23/09

That pic of Nic Cage is the real deal. He's wearing a wig since Superman had Long Hair during most of the 90's. The upper flesh chest is part of the costume. You have to understand that this was a test and this picture wasn't taken by a pro photographer.

By Velocity2k at 10:19 PM ON 09/23/09

It looks like they Photoshopped Cage's face on an action figure's body; the body is completely fake!

By UnRiel at 10:55 PM ON 09/23/09

I'm most grateful that Tim Burton did not get a chance on Superman and that they took Batman away from him. The first was interesting but it was more like The Joker with Batman. I know, hard to resist using Jack as much as possible. Keep Tim in the realm of original works like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice, but keep him away from remakes, especially Superheroes.

By Great Cesar's Ghost at 7:29 AM ON 09/24/09

Superman Returns was great (but like stated above) the ending was weak. An enough Lex Luthor already! I don't care that he's the guys arch nemesis Superman has much better villians in his rogues gallery. Darkseid, Doomday and Brainiac to name a few, all of which will make for very exciting fight scenes.

By BrianaMJ at 8:49 AM ON 09/24/09

I wasn't big on Superman Returns, but I've never been a fan of the Silver Age mythology. It makes no sense that Clark Kent would pretty much turn his back on his upbringing and become so Kryptonian after finding the crystal. To me, Clark Kent is the real person, not Kal-El. It's time to scrap the current movie mythology and bring the franchise into the current era, please!

By tcode at 9:10 AM ON 09/24/09

why put up an obviously fake video. that is NOT cage. All it is is a photoshoped pix. putting up this type of fake "news" calls into question not just the video but your whole site as well. how can other posts that you have be trusted?

By TheVampireLeStrange at 10:50 AM ON 09/24/09

Having seen the original Donner movie as a 10-year-old child when it first came out, and thought it was the most amazing thing ever ("You will believe a man can fly"), and then having to live through those horrible sequels, I actually thought Superman Returns was pretty decent. Not fantastic - Batman Begins was fantastic, The Dark Knight was uber-fantastic, and clearly the greatest superhero movie of all time - but pretty decent.

I will agree, however, it's time to give-up the Silver Age mythology and bring Superman into the modern era, with the modern version of his backstory, childhood, relationship with Lois, etc.

Thats the best Bizarro I've seen in quite a while.

I am going to have nightmares after see cage like that. Gross. Tim Burton has talent, but please dear god keep him away from men and woman in spandex. Please!

Brandon Routh was a great replacement for Christopher Reeve. I have heard the rumors that Nick Cage(Ghost Rider/Fast Times At Ridgemont High) /Coppola has had the desire to be Superman since he was a child, and really, what child wouldn't want to play him in a movie, but my point is that he just doesn't have the face for Superman or the voice, like Michael Keaton didn't have the physique for Batman. I think Cage did a good job as Johnny Blaze/ Ghost Rider and they should do a tag team movie with him and Venom and Spiderman. The new suit would have grown on us, but they couldn't do that if he was returning from a space journey in which he took only one suit of clothes. Now, they could have him come home in his old clothes and he gets beaten up they tear and he has to design a new set. Maybe more resistant to Kryptonite? There's all kinds of things they could have done, the point is that they are making the film and ultimately decide what we have to put up with at the theater.
