New footage: Is Avatar a better game than film?

New footage: Is \<i\>Avatar\<\/i\> a better game than film?

When footage from James Cameron's Avatar debuted online, a lot of you were less than impressed and thought it looked more like a game than a film."

So what to make of this new footage of the actual Avatar game, below, which, we suspect, owes a lot to the look and feel of the movie itself? Anyone think Avatar may actually make a better game than a film?

To be fair, Cameron and star Sam Worthington say that you can only really judge the film if you watch it in its full, big-screen, 3-D glory, and having screened the early footage, we'd have to say it does look a lot better blown up.

Speaking of blowing up, the new game promises a lot of otherworldly military action. Here's how Ubisoft describes the new footage:

Today, we're throwing you into the Pandora rain forest, one of 16 different environments in the game, as a member of the Resources Development Administration, or RDA military.

What do you think?

The entire IP just seems like a tired re-hash of dozens and dozens of cliches stolen from movies and games that have come before it.

This movie and game will likely become the new de facto definition of EPIC FAIL.

I think it sux.

Wow, a game where you use futuristic weapons to run around killing innocent animals. What will Avatar 2 be like? Roaming around in a pet store in a mech suit killing goldfish and kittens?

i have to agree with azathoth - how is running around a forest and killing forest creatures fun? shooting alien wolves and elephants etc with machines guns and air support? WTF? this just seems wrong.

Wow, where to begin. . .

The graphics are awful! This game looks like it was developed for the PS2! I don't own an XBox360 or a Playstation 3, and from the looks of the graphics on this game, why the hell would I bother to get one?!? The saddest thing is, this footage was obviously captured from the PC version (the "press 'Y' prompt. . . unless the xbox controller has a 'Y' button), which just goes to show how dumbed down games have to be when they're designed to play on both consoles and PCs. Yech. . .

Oh, I also agree with the above comments about the content of the game as well, about slaughtering the native life on an alien planet; not cool at all.

So, to recap:

Crappy console port with a framerate in the low teens (if that!), uncomfortable with the actual content of the game, which is based on a movie that most people don't seem to be too interested in after seeing the 'teaser' footage. . . I don't know about 'EPIC fail', Rick, but it's not lookin' good, is it?

Btw, I actually liked the trailer, and I think the movie might be alright, but yeah, this game looks to be nothing more than a poor effort to keep the merchandising wheel rollin' along.

Wow, so i guess none of the above posters have played an FPS recently. Like Lost Planet, or Gears of War. A lot of them have main character versus Alien animals at their core. Also the main enemies for the Military will be the natives which are 9 foot tall super strong cat people. I'm sure what we saw was one of the first levels a get your feet wet level before the Military character has to begin fighting the real threats.

Oh but wait look at that! At the end of the footage they show you the alternative path you can play, as an alien native versus the human military.

I think the graphics are top notch and it looks like the game mechanics are going to be exceptional.

I will admit i'm more interested in playing a Native versus the Military than the Military versus the natives.

I saw this actually in play at PAX this year and it looks impressive for what the game is.

As nghtlfe said, you can CHOOSE. do you want to go around killing animals, or do you want to be the navi protecting the animals and fighting off humans. And as far as the comment about it taking things from diff movies and games. AVATAR was created 14 years ago dude. Before the so called movies and games you speak of. Also, if you have only seen the teaser, you have no idea how amazing this movie will be. An unfinished (as stated by cameron himself) teaser showing scenes from ONLY and I repeat only, the first half of the movie. He doesn't want anything spoiled and for good reason. On Avatar day every single person including critics were mindblown. You will see after Dec 18 : )
