Great. The last show of Defying Gravity promises a big reveal for the next episode. Which they won't show. And they wonder why they are losing viewers.

By neilapril at 2:59 PM ON 09/15/09

Who didn't see DG getting can? Seriously, did anyone think that this show a chance? I for one really like the show! Nice Writing, cool Science, good Actors, nice scifi theme with the unknown entity, all the makings of a good show. Why did it fail? TOOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOOW! I hate to say it, but I think they overestimated the average american's attention span.

By crichton007 at 3:03 PM ON 09/15/09

@jdmimic Because the show sucks. I tried to watch it but after the first two episodes I felt myself getting more stupid with each passing minute. Between this and RDM version of the same premise (Virtuality) I'd rather give RDM a chance over this frakking dren.

By RangerPrimeX at 3:08 PM ON 09/15/09

Damn I liked DG. It was slow building like LOST for sure but they should have let it play out especially with 2 left. It wad way better than the Moore show and I loved the new BSG.

By jky at 3:17 PM ON 09/15/09

Just can't have sci-fi on anything but syfy anymore. The american public has become a bunch of old folks watching dancing or kids texting each other. You can't have good sci-fi drama for the 30's crowd anymore. Why can't syfy pick up GOOD stuff like this and stop funding some of the absolute dreck it produces (pick a monster movie they've made in the past four years that didn't totally suck). Here is something with quality drama and good sci-fi/science. Heck, most of the sets/models are already built. Just grab the show from ABC and keep it going. Hate to do this but:
Surface
Invasion
TSCC
Firefly (someone should be shot for this one)
When will Neilson put a box in MY house? Married, 2 kids, 2 TV's, watch way more tv than we should... Really feel like I don't count at all to the networks. Oh, that's right. I don't.

By cfolliot at 3:19 PM ON 09/15/09

Why did DG fail? Simple, I knew I shouldn't have bothered to watch until I was sure it would continue, but I did anyway, and I'm betting there were a ton of people who didn't watch for the same reason. I'm not going to start watching a show until it's in its second season because I've been burned too many times on good shows that never get to have a proper conclusion.

By Malcontent at 3:22 PM ON 09/15/09

There are 2 more episodes already filmed. They will most likely be aired in Canada. If the air in Canada they will make their way onto the internet.

By MUADIB at 3:27 PM ON 09/15/09

D.G. GETS CANNED . GREAT.I GUESS THE PEANUT BRAINS AT ABC ARE TRYING TO COPY NBC (REMEMBER THEY CANCELLED STAR TREK) IN SEEING WHO CAN MAKE THE STUPIDIST DECISIONS IN THEIR PROGRAMING.BTW .YOU ALL AT SIFFY AREN'T FAR BEHIND SO DON'T GET CONFORTABLE .

By Bunny at 3:40 PM ON 09/15/09

The main reason that I HATE getting into a Sci Fi program on ABC, CBS or NBC is their track record of canning the shows... and never having a proper ending for them. So you get involved, and then there's a dead end with a big fat nothing for you. Who in the hey is that BETA... why do certain people see MARS all the time. We'll never know. What a waste of my time!!!

By rj472 at 3:47 PM ON 09/15/09

Muadib, lay off the spice a little and stop yelling. lol

By slacey at 3:55 PM ON 09/15/09

Defying Gravity got canned because, as you so accurately put it, being the Grey's Anatomy-in-space show. Too much lovey, dovey, Grey's Anatomy, he-got-me-pregnant bullshit.

By Lrdbowler at 3:57 PM ON 09/15/09

jky: I miss Threshold (killed by CBS) which I thought was the best of the three "alien-invasion" shows (Surface, Invasion being the other two)

Unfortunately, I expected DG's cancellation. I didn't see a lot of network support. I'm currently catching up on it now. I actually expect any sci-fi show I watch to be canceled. That's just the nature of the beast, I guess.

By historiandan at 4:14 PM ON 09/15/09

I knew it. I told my girl friend half way through the first show of DG, that any thing that intelligent, well acted, and well written would get cancelled. I've gotten used to it; any show that appeals to a higher than 50 IQ is doomed.

By IH8Networks at 4:39 PM ON 09/15/09

I am not going to watch shows anymore unless they are completely done and on dvd. I am sick and tired of every new show i start to watch and like getting cancelled. Kings, The Riches, Terminator SCC, Pushing Daisies and now defying gravity. This show wasn't the best but it did have a lot of potential and just started to pick up the pace. All the shows listed are ones i started to get into and get excited about whats coming next. Thats without getting into the whole Deadwood, carnivale, john from cincinnatti thing. Thats a whole different arguement. I'm just done with tv. I actually just had it disconnected.

By Strick at 4:41 PM ON 09/15/09

The Ace article was updated to say that ABC says it has not cancelled Defying Gravity. It was always scheduled to end the first run when it did. No news if or when ABC is going to carry the remaining episodes, though.

By BlessedBlogger at 4:44 PM ON 09/15/09

::sigh::

See, this is what I get for taking a shot and breaking my rule. I canceled cable and told myself I wouldn't start any new shows until they'd been on at least one season and renewed for another. I'm sick of getting burned by networks who cancel shows before they even get started and never give you any closure. The show was good, not great, but it definitely had potentially and it was right on the verge of a big reveal so of course they canceled it. No new shows for me. I mean it this time. I'm really starting to hate TV at all.

By forge at 4:57 PM ON 09/15/09

I enjoyed DG and agree that it was a well written and acted show. The sad thing is that we are left with too many unanswered questions. Who/What is Beta? Why is Jen not affected when the pod opens (notice that she was looking around at the others)? Yes the show played fast and loose with the science, that is why it is called Science-FICTION. It wasn't Grey's Anatomy-in- space. But it wasn't Star Trek either. It was it's own show and if given a chance might have big a successful show. I am hoping that the creator of the show creates a web-site in order to answer the questions left in space. But what a way to go out - pod door opens, fade to back - goodbye.

By Kevin at 5:12 PM ON 09/15/09

Too bad. DG was very well done and engrossing if you have an attention span longer than a minute.

Sure, the science (particularly the weightless thing) was silly, but so is the medicine in Grey's when you get right down to it. And let's not ever talk about "Lost."

Ray Bradbury tells a story about The Martian Chronicles, where some nerd comes up and corrects him about where the sun comes up on Mars. "So, I hit him" concludes Bradbury.

It was never about the science, it was about the characters, their backstory, and their interactions on a long and stressful voyage. And, in that, it worked. Probably wasted on network television, though. Too bad cable budgets can't cope.

By Scott at 5:13 PM ON 09/15/09

To the people who announced that they will never watch a show until it has been on the air for several years because they can't deal with a show being cancelled-shows that aren't watched in their first season don't get second seasons. By all means, fight to save shows that are in trouble or are cancelled but ,honestly, take the risk of something new not working out and stop complaining about your fragile nerves. If everybody avoided new television for fear of new shows being cancelled,we'd never get anything new...

By Kevin at 5:59 PM ON 09/15/09

Unfortunately, peole behave like that all the time. They vote for people becuase they "think they're going to win", not because they agree with them on anything. They go to restaurants because they're popular, not because they like the food. They buy clothes, cars, etc for the same reasons.

Herd animals.

By HobbesDoo at 6:23 PM ON 09/15/09

Once again a show goes down because of stupid audiences/networks that can't think anymore and want to mush their brains watching crappy reality TV.

It's a disrespect with audiences expecting people to watch a new series only for it to be cancelled a few episodes down.

Simply ridiculous! And this is 99.99% in the US only. This tells volumes about the level of the audience.

By scifi at 6:35 PM ON 09/15/09

When is the dvd set comes out?

By Bewildered at 6:57 PM ON 09/15/09

So, should we even bother with the heavily-hyped "Flash Forward"? I'm probably going to DVR the pilot just for curiousity, but as others have said, why go to the trouble of getting involved with a show that the network won't put their support behind?

(And which they will drop in favor of a new season of "Dancing Big Brother's Pets Got Talent")

All of the good new shows I'm watching lately are all on the cable channels - SciFi/SyFy, TNT, USA, HBO, etc. They seem to support (and promote) their original programs better than the original networks.

By KBM at 7:11 PM ON 09/15/09

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

ABC did it to me AGAIN!!!

"Pushing Daisies"
"Eli Stone"
"Life on Mars"

Now DG is added to that list -- all in ONE calendar year!

That is IT!!

I will NEVER watch another ABC show, and I don't care WHO is in it!!!

By Drake1444 at 8:32 PM ON 09/15/09

WHAT? Defying Gravity was a great show. I was totally into it from the first episode. WHY ABC!? Haven't you figured out that most people who watch sci-fi shows do so off the internet? You need to find a way to rate that audience.

ARG!

By Tarc at 9:03 PM ON 09/15/09

THE COMMENTS ON DG ARE MISLEADING. Sorry, but I wanted to catch some attention. ABC is not going to air the last two (or three) episodes of Defying Gravity - not because they are cancelling it, but because it's running into the fall season. They can still air the remaining episodes whenever they want. Canada and the European co-producers will be airing the full first season. And although the ratings have not been staggering (just moderate in the US), there are four or five co-producers in five countries, so it already has a decent chance of renewal just because it's already being aired in multiple countries. The show has NOT been cancelled. And I'm thrilled with that - I'm really enjoying the show, and the last episode (number 8) was just teriffic.

By Gill Avila at 9:31 PM ON 09/15/09

I'm all for tracking down the 1200 Nielsen Ratings families and beating the crap out of them, or kidnapping them and sending them on an around-the-world cruise like Danny DeVito did in 1984's "The Ratings Game."

By Canukfan at 9:42 PM ON 09/15/09

All 13 episodes will be airing in Canada. Looking forward to the series continuing to build. (It airs on Friday nights up here)

By scifi-ED at 11:12 PM ON 09/15/09

Nielsen is crap. The Nielsen families need to selected based on what the people like, not their demographics.

These ratings are aimed at age and gender, so companies know where to advertise. This is fine, but it shouldn't be the main priority.
- Just because someone is in a specific demo, doesn't mean that they are spending money.

People should be selected based on what genre they like. Then you select them equally per favorite genre.

Once the families have been selected, based on the genres, then you make a note of what demo they are in.

This way, the advertisers get info on the demographic they want. And the networks get accurate readings on shows, because the people with Nielsen are equally dispersed on the fact that their fav genre is Scifi, Drama, Cop shows, comedy, or the dreaded reality.

I truly believe that the reason these shows are getting cancelled because the majority of Nielsen people aren't fans of Scifi. Because every time a show gets cancelled, lots of people post and say that they watched it.

We all know about the peanuts for Jericho, and they still got cancelled. The people that did this probably weren't Nielsen people. So CBS see the response and give it another season, but when the show airs again, they get the ratings from people that are watching reality shows.

The system is broken and needs to be fixed. Scratch that, overhauled.

By KC at 11:38 PM ON 09/15/09

>...that any thing that intelligent, well acted, and well >written would get cancelled.

Generally true but doesn't apply here...Gravity was ponderous - way too much soap opera dreck in space.

By tooms at 12:07 AM ON 09/16/09

Gonna hope that maybe SyFy can pick up "Defying Gravity." Or hope that ANYBODY picks up DG. Amazing show. Wonderful story telling, great acting.

By cogadh at 12:53 AM ON 09/16/09

Huh. I didn't even know Defying Gravity existed until I stumbled onto last Sunday's episode when I couldn't find anything else to watch. I'm not the least bit surprised that the show got canceled. Did ABC even advertise it once?

By Tarc at 12:58 AM ON 09/16/09

TO REPEAT, DEFYING GRAVITY HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED.

By Ashapasian at 3:34 AM ON 09/16/09

HEY SCIFI WIRE. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. NO, SERIOUSLY. THIS IS LIKE THE 5TH ARTICLE IN THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS THAT HAVE JUST BEEN COMPLETELY ERRONEOUS.

Defying Gravity has not been cancelled. The article you referenced is 2 days old, and you misconstrued all the facts. The same website has since posted a newer article stating as "Tarc" has already said that the show ended because it started late in the season and couldn't run over into the fall season. ABC intends to air the final FIVE episodes as soon as they figure when to schedule them. The article also states that ABC will not be giving up on the show, despite low ratings (hopefully hinting that a second season made bye considered)

sorry for yelling, I'm just tired of what should be a reliable news site screwing up.

By Akuma63 at 10:06 AM ON 09/16/09

Maybe it's me but the story says "Season Finale" and not "Series Finale". So why are people jumping done SYFY's throat for user comments.

Even though given ABC's track record I fully expect the show to be canceled.

By SpaceWorthy at 11:23 AM ON 09/16/09

This is my favorite show of the season. Love the cast and story. From what I understand, to help 'boost' ratings, and you not being a Neilson person, watch the show on-line (legally). Over Hulu, or ABC.com, or whatever. Those ratings are calculated in now and can help save a show, though it would appear that this one is just on 'Hiatus' in the US.

By baron_elric at 11:47 AM ON 09/16/09

My wife and I have been enjoying Defying Gravity, one of the best new offerings of the last year. I'm very sorry to see this report, especially given the way Sunday's episode left us hanging. I guess we can only pray that those last two episodes will be aired someday.

By SPotter at 12:20 PM ON 09/16/09

I, too am very sad to hear that ABC was unwilling to give DG a decent chance. I thought the show was excepitonally well writte, acted, and produced. And I whole heartedly agree with jdmimic, it is no wonder that networks are loosing viewers because they cannot give shows a chance anymore

By Joe b. at 12:44 PM ON 09/16/09

Defying Gravity was one of the few shows I looked forward to every week...ABC is making a huge mistake. Although announcing next week's episode as the "season finale" is better than announcing it as the "series finale." Does this mean there is still a chance it will come back?

By sjc1963 at 1:56 PM ON 09/16/09

I knew that DG wouldn't last very long. Great set, terrible plot.....

By Summerfan at 2:12 PM ON 09/16/09

I love the show and it is one of my favorites, but as long as we are not a Nielsen family we could have a billion people watching and our viewing would never matter. If this had been on the Syfy channel it would have had a chance. As far as ABC only showing the first 8 episodes that was there plan all along, They said that before the show ever started to air and they planned on showing the rest when they could schedule them. They will still be shown in Canada till the last episode #13 unless something changes there. The major networks do not need to show Syfy because they don't know how and they never give it a fair chance to do well ( There all too trigger finger Happy). Until they come up with a fair ratings system Syfy lovers will always get screwed.
