You can add Nigerians to the list of people who hate Neill Blomkamp's hit sci-fi action drama District 9.
According to the Associated Press, Nigeria's information minister Dora Akunyili has asked movie houses in the capital of Abuja to stop screening District 9 because the South Africa-based sci-fi movie about aliens and discrimination makes Nigerians look bad.
"We have directed that they should stop public screening of the film," she said. "We are not happy about it because it portrays Nigeria in bad light."Akunyili said she has asked Sony for an apology and wants them to edit out references to Nigeria and to the name of the main Nigerian gangster Obesandjo, whose name closely resembles that of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
If you've seen the movie, you'll see that the Nigerians may have a point. The movie portrays the gangsters in the most horrific light: hookers, violent arms dealers, superstitious cannibals.
There's even a Facebook page called "Nigerians Offended by District 9."
By Krakken at 1:49 PM ON 09/20/09
All they are doing is drawing more attention to the movie...and the whole "adding to the list of people who hate District 9" seems a little odd. I have really only heard positive comments about it.
By DustinParker at 2:29 PM ON 09/20/09
I wonder how long it will be until people realize that movies aren't real.
By Jesse at 2:31 PM ON 09/20/09
I second Krakken on the count of bad journalism. The title is misleading and the author is clearly biased. The conclusion tells an entirely different, and much more reasonable story.
By sokushi oxide at 2:38 PM ON 09/20/09
I so want to see this movie after reading this. Anything that pisses off Nigera has to be good!
By Sugar White Dog at 2:46 PM ON 09/20/09
So it's okay when these types of films make US cities look bad ie Escape from New York or a plethera of others. Perhaps it hit too close to home/truth?
By Ken Burke at 2:56 PM ON 09/20/09
If they don't like it, they shouldn't watch it!

I think the governement of South Africa appear a lot more bad with what they doing at the hero, their own employee.
By Ryan at 3:07 PM ON 09/20/09
What I find to be the most disturbing is as follows:
If the people of the world are capable of seeing this movie as an accurate portrayal of Nigerians... Then what is Nigeria doing to make this movie's portrayal of their citizens laughable? The fact of the matter is that Nigeria didn't produce a slew of evidence how this portrayal never happens in their country and is laughable that someone would think that it was accurate.
When was the last movie where a Tibetan monk went on a mass killing spree, pimped out women for prostitution, subjugated an entire race? Not many people would believe that scenario because(in my opinion) Tibetan monks would laugh(or be saddened) at the inaccurate portrayal and let it be squashed by the simple facts of it's inaccuracy.
To ban something is to reject the parts of the banned material that we find hard to acknowledge.

My dearest friend
I hope that this letter finds you in good health. I am counsel for grandson of disposed Nigerian general. Years ago a lawsuit against Sony movie District 9 earned the general 35 million dollars. A cout happened and the family had to flee before claiming this money. It was hidden in a numbered account in a safety deposit box. As you are a trustworthy person, I am asking for you help to recover this money and will share in proceeds with you.
May hope shine eternal upon your caring soul
By Muldfeld at 4:53 PM ON 09/20/09
Yeah, that stuff with the Nigerian gangs definitely conflicted with the supposed metaphor for how blacks were treated. If I were a racist, I'd think the problem with how badly the aliens were treated was mostly the thuggish black Nigerian gangs, and, only to a lesser degree, the entirety of fearful South African society. Very poorly done writing there.
By beakernx01 at 5:08 PM ON 09/20/09
Uh...it's FICTION people! It's not like the aliens are complaining about how they are depicted. I would say that the South African people (military, politicians, civilians) are portrayed pretty poorly as well, yet no calls for banning the movie from them...maybe because they realize it's FICTION. For all it matters, could just dub in a fake country for "Nigerian," like "Tartians" and then everyone would be okay?
By Stone at 5:26 PM ON 09/20/09
I'm sorry, but Nigerians make Nigerians look bad.
By Muldfeld at 5:32 PM ON 09/20/09
Dustin Parker, the film is South African and was meant to force South African audiences question how their nation has treated blacks by making them live in shanty towns and forcing them into certain refugee camps. By the way, this doesn't just apply to South Africa but with Israeli treatment of Palestinians, whose homes and land they regularly steal and force them to live in refugee camps. Just recently, Palestinian land was confiscated to make way for fundamentalist Zionist settlers (all of whom come from abroad, including the US) who take their land, so those Palestinians had no where to live. Or how about China displacing lots of poor people from their homes which were demolished to make way for more Olympics construction. They weren't given anywhere to live and were at the mercy of richer, more connected citizens and corrupt bureaucrats. How about how blacks were treated in the wake of Katrina? Any refugee crisis where the recipient nation doesn't want the refugees deals with such issues. It's meant to make us question what happens in our societies, folks.

OMG! I just realized that Deliverance paints a bad picture of people in the southern United States. We must ban Deliverance.
By Celesto at 7:18 PM ON 09/20/09
totally understandable... same with Bruno and Austria!
By EvilPhish at 7:21 PM ON 09/20/09
Funny how the things he's outraged about are all taken directly from what's going on in his country right now. It's a shame the movie wasn't set later in the century, then they could have added raping the aliens to cure AIDS and several other atrocities common there.
By outraged alien at 8:31 PM ON 09/20/09
I think we (aliens) should ban this movie from our theaters. It's not like this movie shows our race, but com on folks... it paints bad picture of all aliens
By -jb at 8:59 PM ON 09/20/09
The movie does not insult all Nigerians --
only the inter-species-hooker/violent-arms-dealer/superstitious-cannibal Nigerians.

LOL, Impish!
By bruce at 9:30 PM ON 09/20/09
Look. I have seen the movie and loved it. I did not notice anything “portrays Nigeria in bad light". The only thing that this person is doing is bringing it to everyone’s attention and making her country look bad on her own. I just see it as a great Sci-Fi movie. So they just need to learn to get over it and I am looking forward for a sequel.
By Adam at 10:56 PM ON 09/20/09
WTF?! Movies aren't real?
I've been shopping for a talking couch for years...
Damn you, Pee Wee Herman!!!
By Marie_SGfan at 11:22 PM ON 09/20/09
Muldfeld...I'm not even going to go into how ignorant or biased your comment was against Israelis. There have been atrocities on both side. However, if you want the true history of how the area now known as Palestine came to be taken from the Jews in an somewhat underhanded way by the British Mandate, then go here: http://palestinefacts.org
Last thing I'm gonna say...what does the history of the Palestinian/Jewish conflict really have to do with a silly movie??
By j at 12:26 AM ON 09/21/09
AngryJonny & Muldfeld.
It was a movie. And if you really want to make noise, please get off the ENTERTAINMENT site. And learn history.
By Red Mask at 1:38 AM ON 09/21/09
The Nigerian minister has every right to make that proclamation. But that doesn't mean it's absolutely right. If they want the world to know the reality of Nigerian people they should promote their history and tourism.

the worst bad guy in the film, that everyone hated was like australian anyway
By Kyle Nin at 9:54 AM ON 09/21/09
Do a lot of Nigerians live in Johannesburg, South Africa? Because that's where the movie takes place.
By Marty B. at 11:50 AM ON 09/21/09
Kyle, have you seen the movie or, failing that, were you able to read this article? The gangsters who lived in District 9 were stated to be numerous times in the movie to be "Nigerian gangsters."
This may come as a shock to your worldview, but it's not uncommon for criminal elements in a given area to be controlled by foreign nationals.
I think the Nigerian gangsters were a bit over the top, but all the characters were comic-bookish (not a bad thing in every instance). The real bad guy wasn't Australian, he was South African like most of the other white human characters.
By Thirdintl at 12:33 PM ON 09/21/09
I agree that Distrcit 9 had a bad potrayal of Nigerians and particularly Africans in general because all the stars were white and the victims were black. I'm still not sure why a movie in South Africa had Nigerians as villans?
To me I was offended by the witchcraft associations but I saw this as kind of a foil for the witchcraft that the white people were doing in the so called name of science and the military. Both groups still wanted to cannibalize him metaphorically.

By fumid at 7:09 PM ON 09/21/09
@ Tapek
Wow...you guys must be without your criminals..annoying bastards. Nigerians singlehandedly must be responsible for credit card scams, insurance fraud. Albert Gonzalez, Bernie Madoff, Enron....are all Nigerians right.
By @miszroyalty at 9:35 PM ON 09/21/09
Ok I could see their point kinda but get over it there are many movies showing differents races protrayed as horribe people. It is reality every race has people that are horrible animals that is just the way the world works. Either way get over it cause the movies has been out for a long time already & who ever has not seen it is freaking nuts. Stop reading this & run to see this movie as soon as possible ! !

What a bunch of whiners. If Americans complained everytime we were depicted as war hungry despots whose worship of the almighty dollar overrode every moral fibre of our being, we'd have developed a serious case of laryngitis by now. I'm sure Nigeria is populated with nothing but martyrs and unicorns, but if they want to truly hunt down anything and anyone in danger of shedding negative light on their country, they ought to go after all those countless spammers who are trying to smuggle millions out of Nigeria and just need your bank account numbers in order to get the deal done.
By Vanny at 7:26 AM ON 09/23/09
I am South African, and I didn't take offence to the movie. Yes, this was the way that the Blacks were treated in Apartheid, which is now over!
Not all whites were like this by the way.
This movie is based on Humanity, our bad ways of hating each other, etc. So it is serving to teach us a lesson and remind us of past mistakes.
Someone commented on the South African government looking bad.. lol. I think that was aimed at the World governments in general.
In Africa, Nigeria is known to be the most corrupt country (next to SA), but really they shouldn't take it personally. Unfortunately, in SA, Nigerian gangsterism is really high... so the movie was set close to true life..
By AndyB at 7:31 AM ON 09/23/09
So every time a movie has a British bad guy, the UK government should sue Hollywood?
Get a grip.

Instead of worrying about District 9, Nigeria should worry about its standard of life problems.
By Alex J. at 8:18 AM ON 09/24/09
As I am austrian i have to say that the movie Bruno isn't quite appealing to me. Nevertheless I don't think it should be bannished or anything! It's a piece of art and everybody shall decide about it's quality for himself - same with District 9!
If the portrait of the Nigerians meets reality than politicians in Nigeria should shut up and improve something - if it doesn't meet the truth then they shall just laugh about it and don't take it to serious.
By Jazzwill-Lagos at 4:42 PM ON 09/24/09
While being a proud Naija-rian, I completely disagree with the outrage. Movies are work of art...simple! Who should tender appologies for the home videos from Nigeria's Nollywood that portrays juju and rituals? As far as I'm concerned, this is one movie that has drawn sudden attention to Naija...hey, Naija no dey carry last!!
