Dune fans blanched at the rumors that sparkly Twilight vampire Robert Pattinson would somehow appear in Peter Berg's contemplated adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic SF novel.
Well, drive a stake into those reports. Zap2It cites unnamed sources as saying they're not true:
What is true is that Pattinson is set to star in a version of Guy de Maupassant's 1885 novel Bel Ami. He'll play amoral journalist Georges Duroy, who uses his harem of mistresses to move up the social and professional ladders.
That still leaves open the question: Who would make the best Paul Atreides? Tobey Maguire? Jake Gyllenhaal? Shia LaBeouf?
By Hellpop at 12:35 PM ON 09/30/09
Ughh. All horrible choices... I like Tobey, but as Maud Dib? No way. The other two... I'll have to just pretend you didn't even suggest them. Terrible fits for the part. Who is next on your list? The Jonas Brothers and Bruce Willis?
By Husher315 at 12:37 PM ON 09/30/09
I hate to say this because I am a LONG time Dune fan, but Robert Pattinson as Paul Atreides might not be such a bad thing...
By allison&jack at 1:02 PM ON 09/30/09
That's exactly what I thought when I read this. Plus he might turn out to be a decent actor once his tween heartthrob days are over.
I also think those other choices are absolutely terrible.
I don't know who I would choose, maybe the young guy from Sons of Anarchy, or maybe an unknown actor.
By melinky at 1:04 PM ON 09/30/09
Tobey Maguire? Jake Gyllenhaal? Shia LaBeouf? ICK!!! I'd have to agree that Rober Pattinson would make a very good Paul Atreides.
What about Thomas Dekker (Formerly John Conner on Terminator:The Sarah Connor Chronicles)?
By metheguy at 1:15 PM ON 09/30/09
As much as I hate all this sparkly vampire stuff, I think Pattinson might make a decent Paul Atreides. Plus I would get a kick out of seeing 16 year olds reading Dune instead of Twilight.
By davepro74 at 1:17 PM ON 09/30/09
DUNE? Hasn't that crapfest been redone already? I would rather watch the abortion channel.
By Photoprinter at 1:21 PM ON 09/30/09
Bart Simpson
By allison&jack at 1:30 PM ON 09/30/09
I'm not sure how I feel about Thomas Dekker. He could very well work.
By Eldon at 1:33 PM ON 09/30/09
I hate to add my voice to the fray, but I think Robert Pattison would make a great Paul Atreides. But I'm basing that opinion on the comparison to the David Lynch eyesore; he does bear some resemblance to Kyle Mclaughlin. To do it right, I really think they should cast an unknown in this role. It's too big to give to anyone remotely famous.
By Olz at 1:39 PM ON 09/30/09
Why remake it again? The 2000 Sci-Fi channel version was pretty good. I'd much rather see one of the prequel books tackled.
By a different tim at 1:42 PM ON 09/30/09
Lol i too, as much as i dont like twilight, think that he wouldn't be such a bad choice, for goodness sakes he has been in other films. But man does twilight suck, and not blood, but crap.
By hanhsolo at 2:21 PM ON 09/30/09
I will laugh heartily and cry when high-pitched cries of "MUAD'DIB!!" will be heard all over the world if they do this.
By Lehnsherr at 2:59 PM ON 09/30/09
The Syfy Channel version is a favorite of mine. Why redo it the original….again.
Great visual "hanhsolo" that would be a funny sight to see!
By Omen at 3:06 PM ON 09/30/09
DUNE is not suited for movie theaters.
An epic tale requires more then 2-3 hrs.
That's why the mini-series is the best format.
Does anyone in H'wood do anything but remakes?
By MUADIB at 3:13 PM ON 09/30/09
absolutly agree that the names thrown around for ...well me ..do not cut the spice. Some one with more physical power on stage ..maybe Hue jackman (not a big fan but he seems to have the strengh the character needs)or maybe the same actor (can't remember his name ) that played paul in the sci channel version. And it definitley can't be a one shot movie . too much story to cover. the lynch version failed because of trying to cram so much in .
By muadib at 3:16 PM ON 09/30/09
Just accured to me .How about the actor that played in the last batman flick?(again i can't remember his name, sorry) just a thought.
By ace1026 at 3:21 PM ON 09/30/09
joseph gordon levitt should play Paul Atreides
By McTex at 3:25 PM ON 09/30/09
Is this a joke? Tobey Maguire? Jake Gyllenhaal? Shia LaBeouf? You have got to be kidding me. Paul is a prince raised amongst royalty and someone actually pitched Tobey Maguire? Jake Gyllenhaal? Shia LaBeouf?
Hell I don't even think an American should play Paul unless it's an Ivy League educated wasp from old money.
Tobey Maguire? Jake Gyllenhaal? Shia LaBeouf? - these aren't even good actors. Geez syfy!
By Maltheus at 3:41 PM ON 09/30/09
They should do Heretics and Chapterhouse. I always thought those books would make better movies than the earlier books. The problem with filming these books is that it's what's going on in their heads, that makes the story great. Lynch's movie tried to get some of that in, with the internal narration, but the complexity was lost. Still, I'm there opening day no matter how much they screw it up (I think, knock on wood).
By divephotog at 3:42 PM ON 09/30/09
OMG!!! Frank Herbert is rolling over and over in his grave!
Haven't we seen enough vampirism in the movies and television already? Need we infuse the lameness of the ideas into every other story idea ever made?
Next, we will see 2001, 2010, and 2063 redux with vampires being the manipulators of the monoliths! Or Star Trek in yet another alternate reality with Spock having pointy canines along with pointy ears! The horror of it all is so revolting to the bloodstream!
And those rumored actors for the roll, get a life..... -kh
By cfolliot at 4:07 PM ON 09/30/09
@ divephotog, dude, did you even read the article? No ones putting vampires in Dune.
By LIke an Ass in the Desert at 4:23 PM ON 09/30/09
I think Daniel Radcliffe would make a interesting Paul Atreides. Robert Pattinson would be excellent as Feyd-Rautha.
I don't mind that this will be the third Dune remake. Dune is a modern myth that bears re-telling to every generation.
By Flux Cheese at 5:05 PM ON 09/30/09
I actually think that Pattinson would be a good Paul Atreides..
I can't wait for this new DUNE film(s). Yes they have made it a couple times but never the right way.. Lynch's sucks ass and the Sci-fi channels was interesting (children of Dune much better) But there needs to be a "New Official version". Give it the Damn Lord of the Rings treatment already and be done with it!! YES!!
By scifire at 5:08 PM ON 09/30/09
Why does the industry continue to REDO redone product? Can't we get something original out of Hollywood anymore? What happened to all that talent?
By gorehound696 at 5:27 PM ON 09/30/09
Hollywood has really been hitting us with these remakes/reboots.I call it YARM for yet another remake/reboot.
I boycott all the YARM.Hollywood will not get my money nor my respect.Get a life and give us something new.
The mini-series is the best DUNE you folks will ever see and if you don't like that statement then go read the books.I have no faith in the bigwigs making a DUNE with LOTR Length. They will make a film and they will butcher the book.
By Bubs at 5:28 PM ON 09/30/09
I'm really excited about the Dune remake! And I'm a big fan of the Sci-Fi miniseries. I agree with the others that Pattinson wouldn't be so bad...
By kryche at 5:35 PM ON 09/30/09
I wish Syfy would just commission the entire franchise as a full on TV series, there is more than enough material there to get at least 4 to 5 seasons, and the franchise would finally be told in a medium that could support it's depth and character development.
By Seanbtwo at 5:39 PM ON 09/30/09
Hey, why not put vampires in dune?!?!?!
You now have permission to shoot me.
By cfolliot at 5:39 PM ON 09/30/09
@ kryche Couldn't agree more, and if done right, and that's a big if mind you, it could put any other sci-fi series to shame.
By BLUE247 at 5:56 PM ON 09/30/09
The mini-series was great, except for Susan Sarandon who seemed out of place. Pattison might work, but kryche is right, tv would do the books more justice than a 2 hour movie.
By shockologist at 5:58 PM ON 09/30/09
Personally I want to see them continue the books in the sci-fi versions
By u-hole at 6:05 PM ON 09/30/09
John Hodgman (PC from "I'm a PC - I'm a Mac") would make the PERFECT Maud'Dweeb. I'm serious. He's practically memorized the Dune mythos.
By kryptoniteman at 7:16 PM ON 09/30/09
Well, since they had Sting play Feyd-Rautha in the original, why don't they have the singer from Green Day play him in the new one? He couldn't possibly butcher it anymore than was done with the first one, plus he can add his own annoying political commentary. They could also have BIll O'Riley play Baron Harkonnen. He's a big enough windbag, they wouldn't need a fat suit.
By M at 7:22 PM ON 09/30/09
I thought the miniseries wasn't bad at all, I don't know why people are trashing Jake Gyllenhaal, I have no idea, he's a very good actor, he could do it well (not that I think a movie version is right, this isn't something that translates to the artificial constraints of Hollywoods holy 2-hour limit, a miniseries is the only way to do the material any justice). Joseph gordon levitt is an excellent actor, he'd be worth watching. It could be done as a limited run series, with the various books running from season to season if done by the right people possibly HBO who have impressed me with a lot that they've made the last few years. Excellent actors, excellent scripts
By tgwaste at 8:12 PM ON 09/30/09
if one more person says yes to robert pattison as Paul im gonna drive to where you are and kick you in the nuts!!!
that guy is one of the most horrible actors in hollywood today. i mean he is just DREADFUL at acting.
thomas decker is an interesting choice.. but i dunno.
By k47 at 10:22 PM ON 09/30/09
Whoever it is needs to be the right AGE to play Paul. Wasn't he about 16 in the first book? Jake, Toby and Shia are all too old.
By Kevin at 10:38 PM ON 09/30/09
Dune should be filmed the way it was originally published -- as two films: Dune World & Prophet of Dune. The break is obvious, the first one ends as Paul is accepted into the Fremen, and the second one opens a couple years later.
It might be interesting to portray the Atreides family as black or asian or some such. Maybe someone from Bollywood?
By Iis4island at 11:00 PM ON 09/30/09
How about Cameron Bright?
By hermy at 11:02 PM ON 09/30/09
what?this dune stuff again.wait until they sign a contract.then speculate.i can understand wanting a big star to play paul.i'd like to see a unknown who can really act play the part.then surround him with great character actors.i know this sounds like what david lynch did.thats how i'd do it.but the money guys will want a actor who will fill seats
By duneboat at 11:26 PM ON 09/30/09
as my handle indicates, anything DUNE , i'll
be there. now this may sound crazy, how about Daniel Radcliffe for Maud Dib. English accent, half-decent actor, once again starring in a good vs. evil scenario. and no i have not been drinking.
By mgs at 3:06 AM ON 10/01/09
The best would be... Alec Newman.
By SethSJ at 8:56 AM ON 10/01/09
Paul Atreides was described as a short fifteen-year-old. An obvious reference toward some of the most famous rulers and dictators: Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Napoleon . . .
By SethSJ at 9:04 AM ON 10/01/09
I say DUNE should be a Graphic Novel. Maybe even a Manga. With a Manga we'd get graphic novels and an animated series taking its time to tell Frank Herberts story, as long as we fans express that we don't want the story completely altered from the series.
By Morandir at 10:20 AM ON 10/01/09
That lad who played Harry Potter in those shitball, derivative, plagiarised dreck-fests of the same name. Daniel somebody.
By panzr32 at 1:19 PM ON 10/01/09
Um, as I recall Paul is like 13-14 for the first 2/3's of the book and 18 for the final 1/3. Why don't they, I don't know find a kid or at least someone in their later teens that can pass for both ages. Just a thought.
By SethSJ at 5:56 PM ON 10/01/09
The Reverend Mother said Paul's age was fifteen, and two years past meaning he was seventeen when he defeated the Emperor.
By asdfas at 9:21 PM ON 10/01/09
Didn't like Twilight at all, but he can look young enough to pull off Paul. Dunno about how he can do with good material.
By mikalmos369 at 10:13 PM ON 10/01/09
Anyone see Daniel Radcliffe in Equiis.... He would be a fine choice to play a done right Dune Paul Attreides
By Anachronite at 11:27 PM ON 10/01/09
Pattinson would be better than any of the other names mentioned, plus as the other poster said, it would be great to see all the twilight teeners get introduced to something intelligent like Dune. It might just create a whole new generation of sci-fi geeks like us.
By TimSykes at 4:51 PM ON 10/02/09
I would love to see the butlerian jihad made into a film or mini-series. I love the books, and think it could be well done as long as it does not have a made for sci-fi channel feel.
By PyroAcid at 7:16 AM ON 10/04/09
emo and vampires do not mix it just makes a good vampire stroy for bubble gum kids debate over..
iam part of and founder the anti-emo federation and i support this msg
By Soulskream at 10:44 PM ON 10/04/09
I think the actor who played Kirk in the latest Star Trek movie would be great. Other than that, the actor who played him in the Sci-FI channel mini series.
By darthholland at 5:51 PM ON 10/07/09
None of the Film and Series adaptations of Dune will work until they can make themselves do two things: Cast a 14 year old boy as Paul, and use real muslims to portray the fremen, not a guy in his mid-twenties hanging out with a bunch of white bikers mispronouncing aramaic
