Venom movie takes the next oozing step toward reality

Venom movie takes the next oozing step toward reality

The Spider-Man franchise seemed to come off the rails creatively with the disappointing third chapter in 2007. No, it wasn't Batman and Robin, but suffice it to say fans weren't particularly happy, especially with the treatment of fan fave and longtime Spidey arch-nemesis Venom.

Now Sony is going forward with a Venom spinoff movie, which pretty much has fans split down the middle. Will it finally do the fanged black-ooze baddie justice, or will it be more of the same? The good news is that Zombieland co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been tasked with penning the project (Zombieland is awesome, so fingers crossed).

Today Wernick confirmed to us that the project is still moving forward and the writing team has turned the script in to the suits at Sony. "We've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward," Wernick told SCI FI Wire in an exclusive interview.

So when might Venom be going into production? "We're not sure, [but] we've turned in our two drafts," said Wernick.

One big question has been whether a Venom movie might happen even before Spider-Man 4, but that now appears unlikely. The latest rumors have Spidey 4 shooting in early 2010. When asked about the relationship between the two movies, Wernick was tight-lipped. "We can't really talk about that, unfortunately," the writer said before adding, "Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what's the next step."

Spiderman 3 was actually decent. I give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5. It either needed to be longer or they need to hold Venom until Spidey 4. Also they needed to show more of the black suits powers. The Battle at the end with Green Goblin and Spiderman versus Venom and the Sandman was pretty good.

What I really did not like in Spidey 3 was the love triangle with Gwen. They did not need her in the movie at all.

That said, Spiderman 1 and 2 are among the best comic book movies of all time. Up there with them is Ironman. If you want to go old school than Superman 2 and the 1st Batman with Michael Keaton are up there as well.

By stic at 9:05 AM ON 09/25/09

but the love triangle was there in the comic books and the cartoons also.

By trauma21 at 10:25 AM ON 09/25/09

stic- there was no love triangle in the comics between maryjane peter and gwen (unless your talking about the ultimate series). Gwen died on top of the brooklyn bridge. (the same scene in the first spiderman movie). I think they messed up the whole venom arc by doing that crappy movie. there where so many different ways to go and what did they do? make it a campy buddy flick with so many wholes you could tell it was rushed to finish. They should unleash Carnage and just have Venom try and stop him with a guest appearence from spidey. Also for spidey 4 I hope they bring in the Black cat as a true love interest and get rid of kirsten Dunst as Mary jane. that chick did not age well at all.

By hermy at 11:08 AM ON 09/25/09

the problem with spiderman 3 was they tried to do to much.it should have ether been sandman or venom as the bad guy.not both.most of these movies make or break based on the villain.batman showed us that.and the second go round of the hulk worked because it had stronger bad guys.i just hope as long as they try to make good superhero movies we will spend our money on them.i'm just scared that they will just crank these things out.the bubble will bust and it will be just another movie fad.

Spiderman 3 was awful, and a large part of it involved a horrible translation of, frankly, a ridiculous character in the Spiderman universe.

As stupid as "venom" is in the comics, he looks even worse on film. What's with the headpiece? Is it skin? A mask? Some kind of symbiotic elastic? Plastic? In the comics, generally, and in the film, specifically, it seems like the face is all of these things. And it just plain looks dumb. Natural? Artificial? Both? Where does one part end and the other begin? The mouth, I guess, is supposed to be 'fleshy and real,' but how it is separate from the plastic looking eyes and head is completely unclear to me. And that's stupid looking.

Plus, his qualities, traits, and behaviors don't mesh well either. He acts like a brainless, grunting ID. Yet, somehow, he's frequently smarter than or besting the more intellignet and controlled Spiderman.

Simply put, the entire Spiderman narrative would be a lot better off if Venom, Carnage, and AntiVenom was just wished away somehow.

Here's to the film never getting made, or TANKING altogether........

By muadib at 3:17 PM ON 09/25/09

Nasty lookin' creature there! i would not want to run into that in a dark alley...or a well lit alley..or a well lit alley with armour and a large gun...or in a tank ...or ..........

By "the chemicals are good" at 7:15 PM ON 09/25/09

Did Venom become good at some point in the comics, or did carnage become so Destructive it scared Venome?

By shadojakk at 11:41 PM ON 09/25/09

I love Marvel heroes and villans, with one major exception: Venom, and Carnage.

Venom is a villan, no matter what you do with him. He is not a vigilante or a hero. The only reason he has ever been popular was due to the artwork of Todd McFarlane, the same man who created Spawn and paid millions for baseballs while letting his comic company fall into bankruptcy to get out of paying the people he hired to make his comics what the were owed.

Forget that. I would rather watch Catwoman first.

By An Ony Mous at 2:30 PM ON 09/26/09

Hobbes: intellignet *snicker

Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I've always been fascinated by Venom. Eddie Brock is vengeful and a jerk, but considers himself to be a fair and decent guy. The alien symbiote is destructive and hateful, with nothing good about it. The two together make an odd combination of one conflicted foe who believes Peter Parker to be the source of any problem. In the comics, Venom(Brock) actually considers himself a hero, though, understandably, no one else does. He believes Spiderman is evil, but will team up with him to fight a greater evil, such as Carnage.

By An Ony Mous at 2:42 PM ON 09/26/09

I don't understand what Hobbes didn't get about the suit. There is no headpiece, it's not a mask. The entire look is an alien symbiote, even the teeth are made of the alien goo. It can shapeshift into more than just shapes, apparently changing it's actual material as well. It's why it can create mouths on more than just it's face.

And while Venom may not be the brightest bulb on the christmas tree, Spiderman is usually taken by surprise from him due to Venom not registering on his Spider-sense. Plus he's more powerful, which means when they fight, Spiderman has to get over the surprise attack and quickly find a way to outthink him while not trusting his protection to his Spider-sense.

By chris at 5:50 PM ON 09/26/09

I agree with diesel. I am very excited to see what comes of Venom. I'm looking forward to seeing LOBO as well. Hopefully they won't base the film on love this time and go for something more exciting like revenge or how thier lives were changed when they met each other. Brock and the alien. Will they tie it into a film that coincides with the Spider-Man trilogy and will the same actor who played Venom in 3 reprise his role or do they have something else in mind? We will eagerly await what comes. Please don't let it be about love again....

By JUDGE DREDD at 7:02 AM ON 09/28/09

Some elements of Spidey 3 were ok, but not the Venom part. We saw him for what, 2 minuits or so? The build up with the black sludge was pretty good. The actor was wrong,
the cgi was bad,
And everytime they showed venom they morphed(badly) his face back to the actor as if he wouldnt act if his face wasnt shown 100% of the time.
Venom, at the end should have been either defeated but kept alive, or should have just escaped ready for a proper venom filled sequel.

I wont even go into Emo Parker, or the son of green goblin design, etc.
I did quite enjoy the sandman side of it and liked how he was responsible for Uncle Ben etc. Thought that was decently woven in.

Oh and if Venom looked like the image on this page (above^) it could be brilliant!.

By Serpen Phlox at 12:15 PM ON 09/28/09

If they wanna do this film, Guillermo Del Toro is the only one able to film this flick

By Vader_Time at 2:27 PM ON 09/28/09

@serpen
what are you lacing your crack with? Guillermo is the mexican Uwe Boll, his only decent flick was Pan's...and that still sucked.

Don't make a Venom Movie. Why? He is only meant to be in a Spider-man movie. They had there chance and messed it up. Vin Diesel would have made a great Venom. What have we learned from these movies. The Dark Knight and Ironman showed us these films can be great.

By Big Red at 8:50 PM ON 09/29/09

3.5 out of 5 For Spiderman 3? Are you kidding me?!? What is in your favorite list.. Bubble Boy? Possibly Rocky and Bullwinkle?! Lowell from wings playing the villain was ridiculous.. But the part that really sealed the deal was Emo Spiderman Jive walking down the street snapping his fingers at everyone like he was the Gay Love Child Of John Travolta and Ricky Martin. Seriously Guys.... The movie was horrible.

By Tony at 9:32 PM ON 09/29/09

I'm surprised nobody is addressing the BIGGEST reason why Venom sucked in Spiderman 3... because the actor who played him looks like a big P***Y. That actor (Tobey Grace? I'm not positive about his name) just looks like a wimp. Not only is Venom a badass villian, but even his alter ego Eddie Brock is supposed to be a badass. I mean, look at Eddie Brock in the comic books and compare him to the actor that played him. C'mon now. In the comic books, Eddie Brock was a buff, intimidating looking dude. He should have been played by someone like Brock Lesnar. But who did they get to play him instead?... The skinny little twerp from That 70's Show.

By Nahan at 11:25 PM ON 09/29/09

These are my biggest beefs with SM3.

First off, Gwen's character was completely under-developed. We have no idea who she is, where she came from, or what the heck her interest in Spider-Man is other than what's vaguely told to us in the dialogue. If she had been a reoccurring character since the first one then MAYBE we could believe in some sort of love triangle.
Second off, in the comic books and in the cartoon series the symbiote comes from a rocket that Jameson's son comes back from after having done some kind of NASA space mission. In the movie it randomly falls to earth in comet form and attaches itself to Peter's bike like it knew what to do the entire time.

By Nathan at 11:26 PM ON 09/29/09

Fourth, all that changes in Peter after being bonded together with the symbiote is his spidey outfit and his hair....that's it.
Fifth and most important of all - Venom. Do I really even need to go into this? First of all you can't cast someone like Topher Grace and expect audiences to believe that's Brock. Secondly, you cannot expect to put him in a suit that acts more like the symbiote than it did on Peter and expect audiences to believe it. Third, you cant put Venom on screen for 15 total minutes and not expect audiences to be a little pissed off. Fourth, Brock is supposed to be an extremely buff character as well as in Venom form. This venom looked like the geek you knew in high school wearing a halloween costume. Sixth, why oh why would you change the attributes of Venom? He is supposed to have a dual identity due to the symbiote. He refers to himself as we and often has two natures about one subject similar to Two-Face in Batman. However, in the movie, one specific line changes everything. "I want him dead too Flint." Another one is, "I wanna kill the spider, you wanna kill the spider." This completely destroys that dual identity complex. And as someone above mentioned, why is Venom, a crazed man looking for revenge, somehow smarter than Spiderman instead of a raving lunatic? Sorry I had to post something because it's bugged me ever since I saw the movie.

By Possum at 8:42 AM ON 09/30/09

As good as spderman 1 and 2 were, i thought Spiderman 3 was the best movie out of the series, IT KICKED ASS!

By Kyler at 1:47 PM ON 09/30/09

spider-man 3 was okay but they needed to show venom's scary face more they only showed it like twice and Kirsten dunce as Mary Jane is just plain horrible i hated her when the first movie came out

By Lexx at 1:13 AM ON 10/05/09

I hope that nerd from that 70's show isnt playing venom. I also hope its rated R, not PG anything

By Dave at 12:07 PM ON 10/10/09

Why can't you all give it a chance to be a stand-alone? Venom is an extra-ordinary character, with a lot of movie material to offer. Plus, they didn't think they could do it with Wolverine but it turned out well. As long as it's centered more towards a teen-adult audience, It should turn out well. Kind of like Cloverfield without the bad camera work

By Razor at 2:30 PM ON 10/14/09

Spider-Man 3 was great; not an ordinary film by any means. The effects were done so well I never felt them useless. The story and presentation of the movie was so much like a comic book I loved it. Just watching the movie was like reading a book; I hope they keep up their dynamic relationships and developing the people further as it has and is doing the movie line justice.

By mentos at 4:06 AM ON 11/08/09

well, venom did have his own comic book series, so why not have his own movie? i think there could've been alot more they should have done in the movie sm3... it was pretty disappointing... but if they did get a new actor, and did it right, they could really make something great out of it.

As the Goblin and Sandman and whatnot multiply and start whizzing about, the proceedings in this grand hodgepodge are so disordered that it would be no surprise were a Nazg? wing into the scene, perhaps ridden by Dr. Zaius.
