The CW's sexy creepy Supernatural kicked off its fifth and possibly final apocalyptic season last Thursday, and one question hangs in every fan's mind: Will we see the return of John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the hellbound dad of demon hunters Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles)?
Since we last saw Daddy Winchester, of course, Morgan has exploded into a big-time movie star with a breakout starring role in Zack Snyder's Watchmen and upcoming parts in several big Hollywood movies.
But Morgan told a group of reporters (including SCI FI Wire) last week that he'd love to make a return, although he hasn't yet been formally approached.
"I just read somewhere that [series creator Eric] Kripke wants me back," Morgan said. "That guy, I think he's probably lying, but if it is, in fact, their last year, I'd like to come back. If it really is going to be canceled after this year, I'd like to come back. I've been saying for the last four years that that storyline got cut out too soon. I'd love to go back for at least one episode or something. I love those guys. I love Jared and Jensen so much. We'll see. No one has contacted me."
What about rumors that Kripke may ultimately reboot the series with a new cast? Morgan gladly offers his two cents.
"I heard that, too, getting new actors and everything," Morgan said. "Jared and Jensen wouldn't even be in it. I can't imagine Warner Brothers saying, 'Yeah, that's cool. You can get rid of Jared and Jensen.' They were going to, like, take on secondary characters, maybe. I just don't see that happening. If you take out Jared and Jensen, you're going to lose 90 percent of your audience, probably. I can't imagine them doing that, but it makes for a great [story] if you say that kind of stuff. I can't imagine that. Warner Brothers is just like, 'Yeah, whatever, dude. We'll see you next year.'"
"But yeah, I'd love to go back," Morgan added, flashing that 1,000-watt grin. "I don't know how I'd find the time, but we'll see."
Supernatural airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on The CW.
What do you think? Should Kripke bring back John?

Yes I would love to see him come back, but Kripke has said the main issue with him coming back is timing, JDM is just extremely busy and it is hard to find time to get him back

beautiful. man.
no jared or jensen? that would be odd. but, i would love to see the return of papa winchester.
i wish they would've never gone this angels vs. demons route. it was so much better before.

I would love to have JDM back on the show for a few episodes! LOVE THE GUY!!!
I agree with him that supernatural would loose a lot or alll of its audience if they did a reboot without Jensen or Jared!

I like to see him come back also and if they did reboot without Jensen or Jared in it, then yes, my wife and I will not be watching the reboot. I could understand if its about 5 or 10 years down the road after the series has ended, but not right now or the next year or so.

JDM is adorable. I'm glad he's becoming such a star now, and look forward to him guesting on Supernatural again.

Bring back John Winchester in some way, for the love of god! The boys need their pop to get them back on track right now. Not that I don't like where things are going with the Winchesters, because the tension and conflict with them in the aftermath of last season is truly great. But I don't see them moving past it without some serious help.
And JDM is right. If they reboot without Jared or Jensen, the show's done. It doesn't have the best ratings on TV, but for the CW, it's been a consistent winner. Jumping the shark like that would be a colossal mistake on their part.
Looking forward to how the new season turns out, though!

I think a reboot would be an interesting line to go with. They would be able to look at the whole Supernatural universe from the direction of another pair (group, family, clan, single, whatever) of hunters. Maybe have them be better financed and do the hunting in higher places. It could go all SORTS of directions.

If this is the last season, I hope it lives up to expectations! Personally, I think they should do a season 6, or continue the "devil" storyline into season 666 (the marketing writes itself!). Ackles and Padalecki are already signed for the sixth season, so it is just a matter of what the producers, distributors, and the CW want to do.
As far as a reboot goes, I don't know if that is a good option. This is such a character driven show that not having the Winchesters in it at all seems impossible. Maybe a spin off would be more appropriate, if it can be done with the same strength of characters and great storylines.

if they try rebooting Supernatural, I be warry of watching it. if they do the reboot without Jared and Jensen, I WILL NOT WATCH THE CW. everyone i know watches the show love those 2. its the main reason the show is awesome.

I'd be all for a reboot, especially if it featured Ellen's daughter Jo and a partner. I've always wanted more of Ellen and Jo and this would be a terrific chance to do it. As terrific as Jared and Jensen are (and they **are** terrific!) the show could still go on without them. Anyone remember "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and the outcry from fans *before* they saw it? And then afterwards, it was all good.

I'd hate for the guys to leave too, but from everything I've read Ackles and Padelecki both want out after season 5 so it's hard to blame the network for finding replacements for such an awesome show! I'd give it a shot without them to see what they can come up with.

Why on earth would anyone bother to watch Supernatural without Sam and Dean? Supernatural is about them, and no one else. If Kripke wants to do a different show, he should just end it and move on, not screw it up in the final inning.
By Swampgirl49 at 10:57 PM ON 09/14/09
If CW lets Jensen Ackles and Jared Padelecki go then they might as well cancel Supernatural for good. I, for one would stop watching the network altogether. However, I think that the show has gotten off its path with the angel/demon story line and it's not even half as good as it was before that. That being said, I would love to see John Winchester return to the show. It's a logical progression in the show. The CW had better open its eyes and stop following the CW's muddy and utterly stupid footsteps before it ends up in the same place.

I would probably watch a spinoff of Supernatural. After all the show is called Supernatural (it's not called The Adventures of Sam and Dean). But, yea it would not be the same without the original actors.

Quit while ahead. Don't air some rehashed version. It will only be compared to Supernatural WITH Sam and Dean.
If they did it, the new actors would have to be excruciatingly hot, or there goes your female audience. I agree with JDM - don't think the network would do it.
And as far as bringing JDM back, ABSOLUTELY. Not only do I like his acting, but he is eye candy in an older, sexier kind of way. Like a fine aged wine. =)
