Now that Bryan Singer is developing a new/retro movie version of Battlestar Galactica, the real question is: What will everything look like?
Concept artist Eric Chu, writing in CinemaSpy, has come up with some cool designs that hearken back to those of the 1978 TV series, with a few tweaks to update them. And look! A Daggett!
Chu's not just anybody: In 2003 he served as production illustrator for Syfy's Battlestar Galactica, redesigning Galactica, the new Cylon Centurions and the Cylon Raiders and Basestar.
Here's how he explains his approach to original series creator Glen Larson and Singer's proposed new film:
Whether Larson and Singer are planning a remake or a continuation, there is no doubt that the feature will draw very closely from the Battlestar Galactica so many of us grew up with. Design-wise, this presents a unique challenge (as I found out from my first attempt at updating a beloved property in Drawing on Imagination: 'UFO--The Movie' Concept Art): How does one maintain the look and feel of the original without being beholden to it? A few cosmetic changes here and there might be fine for some, but insufficient for those who are accustomed to the kind of sophistication that digital technology now affords us.

This still makes absolutely no sense to me.The new BSG was far superior to the original IMHO. Will it make money? I suppose, but I doubt it's a blockbuster.

How incredibly, incredibly, amazingly awful. Please tell me this is a late April Fool's joke.
By gorehound696 at 5:14 PM ON 09/10/09
unfortuantely it is not a joke...........except a joke on all of us consumers.
is there any new stories to be told anymore ???
personally i will never even bother to watch this and i work for a video store for 15 years now and get all free rents.
By Dogpissjones at 5:14 PM ON 09/10/09
This proves Singer is becoming a hack where are original ideas now a days. He needs to realize he missed the boat on BSG, Superman, and X-men.
By Colicos's Ghost at 5:15 PM ON 09/10/09
Chu's a talented artist but it's going to take people like Paul Ozzimo (http://www.paulozzimo.com/) to render the new Galactica movie.
It's going to make a mint if it stick to the TOS formula.
By MockingbirdGirl at 5:20 PM ON 09/10/09
Boxy and Muffit??? Nooooooooooooooooo!
By Alverant at 5:31 PM ON 09/10/09
Isn't it too soon to reboot BSG? Why doesn't Singer and his financial bakers take a chance on a new idea instead of recycling old ones?
(I know the answer to this one: they won't take a risk when you have a guaranteed money maker.)
By Adama at 5:42 PM ON 09/10/09
What the heck are y'all talking about? That latest piece of trash that they regretfully dared call Battlestar Galactica was rubish....pure and simple. The original was far superior. I'll take lasers and an Egyptian inspired story over bullets, lame cgi cylons and no real storyline. Cheers to them for finally using their brains and revamping the old series into a movie and hopefully a series. Starbuck....an ugly looking woman?! INeed I say more?
By itsnotsnot at 5:44 PM ON 09/10/09
I'd hardly call BSG a guaranteed moneymaker, and since the RDM/syfy series was only Battlestar Galactica in name and nothing more, then now is as good a time as any to reboot the franchise.
Now it can get the treatment it should have gotten from the start, and prove once again that RDM should have created his own IP with original characters. Is he capable of that though? Hmmm food for thought.
By me at 5:45 PM ON 09/10/09
BSG should be left alone for now. These talented directors need to work on other projects like the next Superman.
By Kevin at 5:48 PM ON 09/10/09
Once again proving there is no accounting for taste.
By Allison&Jack at 5:50 PM ON 09/10/09
So one franchise that just finished airing on TV (after it butchered the original vision of the show) should be left alone, while another that is still airing, should be treated to a feature film? O....K....
By Hellking at 5:51 PM ON 09/10/09
Why in the hell would anyone be excited by a daggett?

What an original idea.
Is there no limit as to what their minds are capable of?
If only others in The Biz thought like them.
Can you imagine what we would see on the screen?

By Loki at 6:58 PM ON 09/10/09
Oh please. There is NO need for daggetts anywhere. There are few vocal people still ticked off about the newer BSG. Get over it. The new series was more watched and more respected critically. The original BSG had a cool premise but AWFUL execution. DO NONE OF YOU ACTUALLY REMBER IT?! I DO! Even though I LOVED it as a kid, looking back it was hideous! We had SPACE NAZIS, Red Eye the GUNSLINGING CYLON, the kids that took the castle with our hero's help, and Hector and Vector the comic relief androids (poor Ray Bolger).
Do you have to like the new series. No. But lets not paint the original as something glorius it wasn't.
By Uber Critic at 7:06 PM ON 09/10/09
I look forward to it!!! I love big unapologetic space opera!!! Welcome back ancient astronaut themes, and hopefully, the Egyptian inspired look of the original series!!!

the only thing that will interest me from the BSG franchise will be Caprica at this point, all else is camp or pulp. it is unfortunate that the demographics data would suggest that i am an impotent male age of upper 30's with a brain of a 13 year old in need of ez listening sci fi... oh well we didnt need to think anyway...

I can't wait to see the reboot of THIS version.
And then the remake of THAT version. YES! Infinite versions from every parallel universe!!
By Qwerty at 9:33 PM ON 09/10/09
When will filmmakers realize that that the more versions you have of something the more dilute and invalid the original concept gets. It's one thing to remake a film every several decades or make a few sequels every now and then, but this is going WAY too far.
I see the future of movies, and it's a never-ending time-loop of monotony.

BSG: Cylon Returns
Watch him portray and characterize the Cylons as the "gay minority" that is discriminated against and blah blah blah. Bryan SInger should stay away from sci-fi and superhero movies.

By Gundar at 11:49 PM ON 09/10/09
I dunno about the rest of everyone, but that Viper looks SICK! Whatever version they do, I definitely like these designs.
And the daggit? Look closely at the picture - it's a humorous take that evokes another beloved sci-fi franchise. It's not meant to be serious.
By PunditGuy at 12:08 AM ON 09/11/09
This brings to mind the CSI episode where Ron Moore yells "YOU SUCK" at the guy trying to darkly re-imagine a classic sci-fi show.
By Phoenix at 12:09 AM ON 09/11/09

By Gundar at 12:37 AM ON 09/11/09
Phoenix: The Viper isn't supposed to look like the MK 2. It's obviously meant to be a whole new take on Larson's original storyline.
God, don't people actually read anymore? Or do they just look at pretty pictures? :)

Loki if think Nu BSG is/was more popular than the original then you know absolutely nothing about the history of either show. BSG '78 was watched by more than 17 million people during the last episode. Nu BSG got Maybe 3 million for it's last outing. And that's including time shifted viewers. If you ask me it's a good idea bring at least some of the better elements of the older version back for a new movie. Especially if Universal wants to produce a franchise to compete with the likes of Star Trek, Star Wars, And Stargate. Nu BSG's tiny, tiny audience could never compete.

Well, I, for one, am ready for a science fiction movie or series that tempers drama and stress with humor and hope. While I thought the RDM 're-imaging' was a very original take, it got way too gritty and dark. The series' conclusion was, well... depressing.
While I think the dagget (artificial dog-like creature) was pretty hokey, it did represent something that was missing from the re-imagined version: humanity. If you'll recall, the boy, Boxey, lost his dog during the attack, along with his dad. The engineers of the BSG put the artificial Dagget together so Boxey could have SOME semblance of normalcy. Sure... the special effects were cheesy, but the sentiment was what I would expect people of noble character to do for an innocent child who just lost everything.
The re-imangined BSG was meant to attract a different audience than the original. Personally, I think the time is just about right for a movie and/or series that ends with 'finding something that was lost'.
We could sure use that now.
By JustinX at 9:41 AM ON 09/11/09
Read the original article... the Daggit is in Boxy's dream... I loved both the old and the new BSG and I am fine with another take. Maybe a darker, dirtier version of the original.
By danjack at 9:52 AM ON 09/11/09
Blue J, I'm sorry to hear about your *ahem* little problem, but that is still too much information.
As far as Singer's BSG, bring it on. I'm looking forward to seeing someone who can bring the scope and vision of BSG back.
Also, let's bring back Starbuck, and leave the after school special level angsty teen actress behind as just a painful memory.
Star Trek was brought back and totally ignored the original canon and the millions of existing fans; therefore, BSG can definitely be brought back and ignore the recent series that 9 out of 10 people never knew even existed in the first place.
By deadhorse at 10:08 AM ON 09/11/09
I just don't get it. The original BSG was an OK story and the new BSG had it's good points. Why the hell do we need to tell the story again.
Sometimes I just want to give up. I am really starting to hate California. They are out of touch with everything. There are sooooo many good novels out there. Can't they at least attempt to tell an original story rather than spend millions of dollars on a old tired story.
Nope, they are going to kick that dead horse one more time!

By jeff at 10:09 AM ON 09/11/09
I'm definitely looking forward to this new movie. BSG came back because there's a lot of fans with a lot of passion - not quite like Star Trek, but enough to keep things going since '78 and thanks to Richard Hatch's efforts (he personally bankrolled the 1999 trailer that helped kicked the comeback in gear).
While Ron Moore's BSG was a good show, it wasn't quite what the hardcore fans wanted and it would be great to see what Bryan Singer had in mind since they came super close to greenlighting his 2001 continuation tv show - which was set to have Dirk Benedict back as Starbuck, Cassepeia, Sheba, Boomer, etc.
And this movie doesn't have to contradict anything Ron Moore just did as he clearly established his series took place 150,000 years ago (so could be with a slight stretch be considered a prequel series), and Glen Larson clearly established that his BSG was happening in modern times (Boomer picked up the moon landing in the final episode and then there was Galactica:1980 (gasp!)).
This BSG could be a great popcorn movie and it would be great to see the original story (and hopefully the cast) continue with a modernization (like Star Trek since that original series also was a little campy too), and if done right, could become a series of movies.
By K'Rik at 10:12 AM ON 09/11/09
This is going to SUCK BALLS!
TOS was crap, this will be too.
As to the viewership of the TOS. There were only 3 major networks at the time. So they had lots of viewers. So it is a moot point.

By farscape29 at 11:14 AM ON 09/11/09
This just doesn't make any sense at all. Why is Singer doing this? I screwed up by doing Superman Returns instead of X3 and we saw how both of those projects turned out.
Next someone will be announcing the reboot of Halo even though the first movie hasn't come out yet.
By Robert Barnett at 11:14 AM ON 09/11/09
From what I understand one of the Cylons batteries goes dead and while it is less than itself it knocks up one of the humans on board the Galactica and so the Cylon ends up having a son but because of the mix of human and machine it is sickly having to eat macrobiotic food floating in lubricating oil. However, he gets fully charged up when his mother gets threatened by one of the bad guys and he smashes him with a piano.
Give me a break. Brian Single proved he can't be trusted to start what he finishes. He has also proved that given a chance he could screw up a free lunch.
Pass.

Rehash, reimagine, reboot, retell. TOS was a camp load of old tosh which was in itself a shameless exploitation of post star wars interest in space opera. Yeah, and it got great ratings with only three major networks there at the time. That was how it managed to get canned after only one season. However much seasons 3 and 4 of the RDM reimagining sucked balls, they still beat seasons 3 and 4 of TOS, because they never existed. And the miniseries and seasons 1 and 2 were clessic telly for everyone except the Ginos, who spent their time whining because they made Starbuck a girl instead of a cigar chomping misogynist.
By joesocwork at 11:21 AM ON 09/11/09
@Fury161: I'm not sure I saw the Aliens referrence, but the daggett looked like a Cylon to me.
My Mrs. is a fan of the Star Wars-like original and I liked Ron Moore's gritty uberrealistic Hill Street/NYPD Blues/ER approach when it didn't try to get overreach & overdose on existentialism. But if SInger and Company really want to go Retro, then leave the '70's behind and try a '50's sci-fi version like a Buck Rodgers, or the "Cities of Tommorrow", all in sharp lines and angle and primary colors. Regardless, I'm BSG'd out! :P
By Loki at 11:59 AM ON 09/11/09
Berlin, as it has been pointed out, back in the days of original BSG there were few viewing options and BSG was exposed to far more people by default. I would argue MOST of those viewers were kids (like me). New BSG was on SciFi with a MUCH smaller audience reach and hundreds of competitive options, and 3+ million people still managed to find it and watch it, virtually all adults.
You still avoided my examples of how the original show was some of the schockyest (tm) tv ever done. And someone here posted that they preferred Galactica 1980 to new BSG, which just shows there is no telling WHAT some people will watch.
By Fury161 at 12:14 PM ON 09/11/09

Why are they doing this? I loved the latest BSG series and I am old enough to remember the original. It started well and fell apart rapidly. The new one though was bloody amazing, and one of the few tv series I bought (or ever plan to) on blu ray. It took an ok idea and made it epic.
NO TO THIS MOVIE IDEA!

LOL! That explains why it's "coming out of the wall!" :P
By allison&jack at 1:38 PM ON 09/11/09
Just because there were only 3 networks was no guarantee for success, or the large numbers the original received.
It accounts for why the numbers were super high compared to today's, but it doesn't tell the story of why the show was so successful ratings wise in the first place. Lots of shows were canceled due to low ratings, BSG was canceled because of high production costs, but it's ratings were rock solid. High ratings happened because the show was popular, not because there was nothing else to watch.
Also, it took ABC years to find another show that managed to get the same ratings BSG got in it's Sunday time slot.
Face it, no matter how much you try and minimize the ratings success of the original, it was still more popular than the remake. And most likely the reason we're seeing a full reboot of the original and not nuBSG.
By Tiff at 2:11 PM ON 09/11/09
You know what. I'm 33. I enjoyed and watched and rewatched the original BSG. I did NOT like the BSG series at first because the pilot was just horrible! After awhile, I warmed up to it and would not find it appalling and idiotic to support a reboot so soon after this series has ended.. .and it hasn't even ENDED since there are other series based in that world starting up.
This is going to end up being like Terminator running while Terminator:SCC was on the air. 9.9 It's stupid. You don't go out and recreate a universe when the current audience has a universe already set in their mind without any connection whatsoever.
I for one, will not watch it. Especially not if there are Daggets in it.
By suprememango at 2:31 PM ON 09/11/09
BSG 1980 was one of the worst shows EVER. I watched a couple of episodes and had a headache each time. The concept, the plotting, the execution, EVERYTHING missed. Baseball kids episode. Super jumping colonials. Re-used space battle footage. *SHIVER*
Now I had fond, though vague memories of TOS. That's what prompted me to watch new BSG which I loved. It was dark, complex, depressing at times but top notch plotting and acting. Completely organic and unpredictable. This is one of the few series I never knew what would happen next. And after being gorged on predictable shows this was a wonderful change. The show was critically praised and won a number of awards. What awards did the original win?
Fine. You purists didn't like it. Didn't like the changes. Wanted the predictability of the original series. Well New BSG was never meant to be a sequel to the original series. Reimagining. Starbuck became a girl. woooo. He wasn't that great a character in the first place.
btw allison & jack - how can u compare viewership with three major networks to cable/direct tv with more than 100 channels? that makes NO sense.
And if the original was SOOOOOO great why did poor Richard Hatch spend decades trying to get the series revived. and btw he was on the new series that you purists so despise.
Let's compare old BSG it to another beloved sci fi series - Star Trek. Where was BSG the motion picture that spawned ten sequels? When last did you hear of a BSG fan convention? What cultural phrase did BSG inspire? (Trek - psychological term "raising your shields", "beaming", "where no one has gone before").
let's face it. BSG was an okay series. It is showing on TCM these days so check it out. I can watch even the lamer episodes of Star Trek TOS but can't bring myself to watch original BSG.
And finally, would they even be talking about this new movie without the success of new BSG. The answer is no. New BSG revived the long dead franchise and now you old school BSG lovers are going to get your retro movie. I hope it doesn't suck.
So instead of crying down the wonderful series you purists should be kissing New BSG shiny Cylon booties. So say we all!!!

Yawn....
Hey suprememango, I don't care if someone
gave me the entire box set to Ron Moore's
"Glorious" new BSG of DVDs, I would
simply throw them out and not watch them.
Ron Moore essentially built a garbage dump
over an old, quaint town, that was deemed
"ineffectual" by qausi-new age prophets
of high school semantics and shaky
cameras portraying sordid/pathetic characters.
"So say we all!!!" This is technically
inaccurate, since I am AT LEAST one
who loathes the "new" BSG, so it cannot
be all by definition. Yeah, honestly, I am
sick and tired of remakes myself, but
this could be a nice movie to see if it is
done right (hint hint, I can take the kids to
go see it) and it will be the true Battle Star,
not some other's rancid work.

I am absolutely stunned and amazed that Singer feels/felt it necessary to even do this, and the he received funding for this appals me. THIS is what is wrong with Hollywood, most especially today...they have run out of original ideas and feel it necessary to do what was just done, and done amazingly well. This is a complete waste of money, and shame on anyone who goes to see this in a theater.
By Falconer at 4:42 PM ON 09/11/09
SPotter said it best: Hollywood has run out of ideas (as well as the courage to look for quality original material & the brains to adapt it right.) The chicken-little money-men run the show, and they all think we're blithering idjits who go see their sewage. After four highly successful years of the Revived BSG, which even NON-SF fans loved, NOBODY will go to watch it but addicted geeks who just can't get enough. Yes, and shame on them for enabling this kind of crap from Hollywood. Excuse me, that should be Whoreywood.
By allison&jack at 5:04 PM ON 09/11/09
Suprememango I wasn't comparing the original to nuBSG. I was pointing out the fallacy of thinking that because there were only 3 networks that the original was automatically a ratings hit because there was nothing else on Sunday nights to watch.. But if that were true, then a lot of other shows would have been a huge ratings hit too for the same reasons, but they weren't.
And popularity wise, there's simply no getting away from the fact that TOS was viewed by and loved by far more people than nuBSG, regardless of what the audience was like then vs now. It's just a fact. Get over it.
By danjack at 5:06 PM ON 09/11/09
supermango, I will say to you what the GINO fans said to BSG fans: As is stands now, nothing can prevent this from happening, so get over it!!!
You can still enjoy your precious GINO, as it's on DVD. Maybe the new movie will even encourage new fans to check out the RDM GINO DVD's, so it might still be a win for you Classic BSG haters.

What is this about?
"Concept artist Eric Chu, writing in CinemaSpy, has come up with some cool designs that hearken back to those of the 1978 TV series, with a few tweaks to update them. And look! A Daggett!"
"Chu's not just anybody: In 2003 he served as production illustrator for Syfy's Battlestar Galactica, redesigning Galactica, the new Cylon Centurions and the Cylon Raiders and Basestar."
'scuse me?
What is the point of this? To take Singer's upcoming BSG film down a peg, by making people think this is HIS concept art? By fooling everyone into thinking that Boxie and a giant Muffett are part of Singer's plans for the film?
Read the fine print, people--- this artistic 'display' was created by someone from Nu-BSG, not anyone associated with the prospective film.
By Why? at 10:10 PM ON 09/11/09
I rank this idea as a 2 handed FACEPALM.
By suprememango at 11:48 PM ON 09/11/09
I never said I didn't want them to make the movie. If it's good I'm happy. Good Sci Fi movies is dang hard to come by. I won't see it in theaters but I'll take a look at it on cable.
My grouse is the glorification of the mediocre series that was the original BSG, and worse yet the awful BSG 1980. One of the few praises I have heard from the purists on this board is that they preferred the Egyptian style helmets. What?
And so it was popular back in the day. As any true Sci Fi fan knows, popularity does not always equal quality, in fact it rarely does. I have watched Smallville for nine years and I'll be the first to admit that it is an average show. I don't venerate or revere it just because I like it. I'm a huge Trekkie but I will admit that Nemesis was not a good movie.
So you hated the New BSG. That's cool. Not everybody will like everything. That would be kinda boring now wouldn't it? You liked the original BSG series. More power to you. But it is not worth this golden pedestal some of you want to place it on. A common wooden shelf is more like it.

Well, maybe Singer can make a more coherent show then the last one. The last two seasons were horrible. And the las ep was the most disappointing series finale EVER! What the crap was it about, Starbuck was a ghost and how did that happen? Where did she get the new Fighter she came back in? No answers. What a waste of two years of my life.

This is starting to feel and look like a MANGA and ANIME franchise. Parrallel versions of the same characters, leading up to many different endings. Why not show a black hole occur at somepoint for them all to meet?

Wow. I have never seen so much hate between the fans of the same franchise, but different series. Well, at least not since Star Trek came out in theaters this summer.
To all the old school BSG folks: I have no problem with the original series, I wasn't a fan, but that doesn't mean it sucked. And don't blindly assume that anyone who enjoyed the newer series is a brainless, tasteless dolt, either.
New BSG folks: we have our series, and we always will. Calling people names won't change that.
To Hollywood: Really? Another reboot? Whether or not this IP was just redone or has sat dusty for years, don't you think you should take a stab at something original? I know, I know, every story has been told at least once, but do we have to keep telling the same one over and over?
And ScFiWire: FIX THE FRAKKIN' CAPTCHA!

Keep clapping yourselves on the back for the high ratings back in the 70's.
3 major stations at the time. BSG didn't make it into the top 30.
It was also up against - Movie reruns and Mary.
So congrats on pulling in lots of viewers. I wonder how well it would have done against 100 more channels? Probably as well as RM's version.
Once this version comes out and SUCKS it will put to rest the b*tching about which is better. Re-Imagined will come out on top as it always has been.
So stick that in your Dagget!

Mork and Mindy replaced BSG and got 27 million viewers. They made it into the top 30 which was the golden spots. Mork and Mindy lasted until 82.
Another argument blown out of the water. Next!

I am telling you all this movie will never be made. It ain't gonna happen.
And many of us BSG lovers were huge fans of the 70s show as well. It is not an either-or. But it is a FACT that the new BSG was not only superior to the original but superior to every drama ever made in television history. I have discovered that the only people who hate the new BSG are humanists and/or atheists who detested the spiritual plot.

This looks like crap, absolute and complete crap. If I wanted to see the old cheesy battlestar galactica of the late 70's its free on hulu. It's amazing how a series like the reimagined battlestar galactica emerged from the joke of glen larsons one season pipe dream. If you're going to remake it like this don't call it battlestar galactica

K'Rik screenshot or it didn't happen. :P
Seriously though, you are wrong. But it's a dead horse that has been beat to death and turned into dog food, so go ahead and continue believing the falsehoods you spouted.

K'Rik, Your stats, though interesting to you and your fellow members of the Moore-Christ Church, are woefully in error. Please post some back-up to your info.
Also, if you'd be so kind, please post those outstanding ratings numbers for Moorelactica, from beginning to end.
I know you like to believe the press coming outta Skiffy, but let's be real here, without Stealth Marketers, and mind numbed cultists, Moore is nothing but a Professional Re-Writer.
Oh, and by the way K'Rik, Give the new Movie a Chance, you might like it.

McTex, that is the most shallow, mind numbed analysis I think I've ever read.
Humanists and Aethists?
Let me ask you, do you genuflect when Ron Moore's name is mentioned?
Mooreron

Daggits are back? What else? Centons and felgercarb? Will it be child-friendly like the original series? Because nothing is more child-friendly than a story about genocide!
