What's your pick for the real U.S.S. Enterprise?

What\'s your pick for the \<i\>real\<\/i\> U.S.S. \<i\>Enterprise\<\/i\>?

Which is the real Enterprise?

That's the challenge being thrown down by filmmaker and Star Trek expert Robert Meyer Burnett (Free Enterprise), who posted the composite image below on his Facebook page.

Burnett has his own opinions on the matter, which anyone who's ever talked with him would know; after all, he helped design Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas.

Anyway, click on the image to enlarge the depictions of the ship from J.J. Abrams' new movie, the ship from the original series (as enhanced for the remastered versions) and the refit from the original series films.

What's your pick?

Did he stick the shuttle in the middle of the new enterprise to mar its smooth lines on purpose? As well as chop off the front and back? If so - I call bias and sabotage.

By Crusade2267 at 1:59 PM ON 09/16/09

No, eggnog, he used the first officially released publicity photo. The shuttle was there already. That said, it's not the most flattering angle for the design.

Personally I like TMP and the Enterprise-E the best.

By Lrdbowler at 2:14 PM ON 09/16/09

I'd have to go with the middle shot from The Original Series for nostalgia reasons.

Those lights on the ends of the nacelles.

By trueman832 at 2:18 PM ON 09/16/09

Hmmmm...
The TMP ship was a refit of the TOS original, not a reimagining. The -A was a replacement of the refit one. So, until all us old trekkies die off, it's always going to be the TOS/TMP Enterprise. Anybody who can accept Chris Pine as Kirk obviously hasn't had to sit through his daughter's Lindsay Lohan collection (uuggggghhhh).

By Solar at 2:21 PM ON 09/16/09

My vote would go to the actual real enterprise - the US Navy Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-65)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(CVN-65)

By Dennis at 2:21 PM ON 09/16/09

I like them all. They are difference versions of the same ship at different times, and / or timelines. It's all one story. All I want is more.

By Crozia at 2:26 PM ON 09/16/09

TMP Enterprise by reason of the beautiful lines it has.

Even though I did like the new Star Trek movie, over all, the Enterprise was an abomination, including it's brewery engineering section.

By frankenstoen at 2:32 PM ON 09/16/09

The latest Enterprise is amazingly ugly, with terribly awkward proportions and those ridiculous nacelles. The original will always be my favorite but The Motion Picture design is absolutely beautiful and shows a great deal of respect for the original design.

By Amicron at 2:33 PM ON 09/16/09

I agree with Crozia. The new Enterprise external is fine, but the interiors were absolutely HORRIBLE. The bridge reminded me of a hospital waiting room, and the engineering section was crap. That area where Uhura was first working? Come on.

By MUADIB at 2:54 PM ON 09/16/09

tHE QUESTION SHOULD BE "WICH IS THE REAL ENTERPRISE AND LIMIT IT BETWEEN THE TOS VERSION(s) OR THE NEW MOVIE VERSION.SINCE ALL OTHER VERSIONS ARE REFIT AND \OR UPGADED CLASS TYPES.(LIKE NORMALLY WOULD HAPPEN OVER TIME WITH MILITARY VESSELS {THINK FLETCHER CLASS DESTROYERSOF WW2 AND THE ARLIEGH BURKE CLASS OF TODAY})ME, I like the origional (digitalized)for the classic look and theEnterpise"E" model for the sleek and powerfull look it has.

By Editor at 2:58 PM ON 09/16/09

Personally if I could have the external saucer from the new movie with the rest of the extenal and fullinteriors of the TMP Enterprize that would be MY Enterprice NCC-1701, but if it's a pick than the original with the movie refit gets my vote.

By NapoleonWilson at 3:11 PM ON 09/16/09

Give me that original refit and dump that stupid -A business. Now thats a beautiful lady. The new ship looks like a Down Syndrome kid tried to draw the Enterprise with crayon and butcher paper.

By ScottyT at 3:17 PM ON 09/16/09

Of those three I like the TMP Enterprise (bottom) the best. I did really like the super mechanical interior of the one from the new movie, even if there was a LOT of wasted space in the design.

My all time favorite is without question the Enterprise E, which I think perfected the design history to bring it into the 21st century.

By apollo170 at 3:19 PM ON 09/16/09

I'll take the TMP Enterprise any day. The TOS version is great, but gotta love the improved version. The Enterprise from the new movie was great for a series reboot, but it'll never be the favorite for diehards.

Much love for 1701-E as well.

By Shooter3018 at 3:26 PM ON 09/16/09

Looks like I agree with the majority, 1701-E was the best design. It's so stylish. If I had to pick from the three though...

JJ-prise looks terrible.
1701 is a classic, but a bit bland.
1701-A actually looks great AND classic, my favorite.

By romzoom at 3:29 PM ON 09/16/09

For me, its the one that is not showed. The TOS Enterprise - the top 2 are CGI and the TMP is a real model. Yup, its old style and hard to film - but to me it more real than CGI (but you cant move it fast - Ya sure, dont want my battleship doing 360's either).

By MustangM08 at 3:33 PM ON 09/16/09

The U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-A; is the only way to go. The one from the new movie is nice combing elements of the original series Enterprise and original movie Enterprise. And the original series Enterprise is just classic. However the NCC-1701-A is the refit version of the Constitution class and is faster, carries more powerful weaponry, is bigger and more sleek than the others. It looks the best, has seen the most action, and if pitted against the others in combat would destroy them. So there is no contest, U.S.S. ENTERPRISE NCC-1701-A.

By zosolias at 3:39 PM ON 09/16/09

Actually, this is the REAL enterprise:

http://www.geekologie.com/2009/08/sure_hes_happy_enterprise_dog.php

Of course, there is no real enterprise, it's all fantasy :)

By danjack at 3:54 PM ON 09/16/09

My vote would be for the Enterprise from TMP (bottom one in the picture). I still think that one is the coolest design.

By Fiendish Muffin at 3:54 PM ON 09/16/09

TMP Enterprise by a mile. The design, the lighting on the hull, the interiors (especially the interiors from Star Trek 6)... everything about the TMP Enterprise is classic.

I don't mind the new Enterprise too much... it's not my favorite, but I understand it IS a remake and having an open mind is warranted.

What I DO hate is how they "remastered" the TOS Enterprise. I don't know if it's how they shaded the model or what, but it looks like a toy. And the way it moves on-screen... it just screams low budget CG effects. If you're going to remaster the effects, do it right IMO.

By purplemjcat at 4:01 PM ON 09/16/09

By Rob at 4:14 PM ON 09/16/09

We all know that all of those shown are fictional spaceships, none of which are 'real', as some smartasses have to point out, but only the television series Enterprise can claim to be 'real'. Runner up is TMP, a 'refit'. The new movie version doesn't even exist as far as I'm concerned.

By LT at 4:36 PM ON 09/16/09

If everyone would look closely, Enterprise 1701-A was not introduced until the end of Star Trek 4, the refitted Enterprise from the first movie had no A.

By Archeagus at 4:51 PM ON 09/16/09

I like them all, but I like the latest iteration the least. Just when you thought they could not make the design any more phallic ...

By Ken Morrison at 5:11 PM ON 09/16/09

I can't believe you people are spending so much time on this...

By Dominic at 5:15 PM ON 09/16/09

I don't mind the new disign, but i would have liked it if they made it more closer to the TOS enterprise. My favorite enterprise is the TMP. My favorite starship disign in the trek universe is the excelsior class.

By RJ at 5:26 PM ON 09/16/09

@Ken M. You obviously read the very short article and took the time to comment, so you spent the same amount of time as everyone else did...

Criticism Fail...

By TheVampireLaStrange at 5:40 PM ON 09/16/09

I grew-up in the 70s spending my young childhoow watching the reruns of TOS, and my teenage years as a huge fan of TNG, but I've got to say that the Enterprise-A was always my favorite.

By archer75 at 5:41 PM ON 09/16/09

bottom one

By Red alert NY at 5:44 PM ON 09/16/09

Yeah I like the ST: Motion Picture lines. I dont like the nacelles or rear or the ship in he latest film, though I liked the film. This sh1p in the latest film seems closer to the Enterprise E and the Exelsior/EnterpriseB era. I did like the gooseneck displays on the ship from the pilot

By TrekMac at 5:54 PM ON 09/16/09

Its kind of funny. As we get further away from "Star Trek XI", the less I care about the new direction. I think J.J.'s new Trek will being around for at least two more films, but the franchise will go back to what has already been established. I do not think JJ"s version of the Enterprise will catch on in the long run.

I choose the bottom version.

By FresnoTimeLord at 5:54 PM ON 09/16/09

TMP Enterprise...May She rest in Peace..FTW!

By Technical Journal at 6:22 PM ON 09/16/09

Just recently I saw the remastered TOS for the first time. I have to say the clean lines and clear images of NCC-1701 brought back a giddiness that I haven't felt since I was a boy. The original and still best.

By Oldcode at 6:26 PM ON 09/16/09

The Original, the Classic, the one and ONLY!

The one from the movies is good, the one from the new movie is okay, except for those warp engines that look like they are having an allergic reaction.

Enterprise D is the ugliest thing in creation as far as I'm concerned.

By Dteifke at 6:37 PM ON 09/16/09

I vote the TMP Enterprise as the best looking starship in the bunch. It was the first version I ever saw, so I am biased. Yet it always seemed to be the Cadillac of Star Trek ships. Classic body lines, not too flashy, and a beautiful use of running lights.

By redspyder at 6:52 PM ON 09/16/09

I prefer, stylistically, the Enterprise-A, but if forced to choose but one, I go with the original. The interior felt more "whole" than the others, more believable in size and design. For "please poke out my eyes" award, the latest "reimagined" version, though it's a close race with the TNG version (the first TNG version, not the final TNG version).

By karanadon at 6:54 PM ON 09/16/09

I love both the old ones (the new has yet to grow on me!) and though the TMP Big E is the best looking...the original is *always* the best, hands down!

By mocastles at 6:55 PM ON 09/16/09

The original. Always and forever.

By Manos at 6:59 PM ON 09/16/09

To be overly picky, TOS Enterprise pictured is actually a CGI rebuild. That said, I pick TMP Enterprise. The movie was boring, but the flybys of that ship on the big screen were stunning.

By SethSJ at 7:01 PM ON 09/16/09

The Motion Picture and Recent Version get my Vote.

By Barry Allen at 7:02 PM ON 09/16/09

I always hated Trek TOS, that's why I chose the Enterprise from J.J's Trek movie. Suck it Shatner!!!!

By lordanubis82 at 7:22 PM ON 09/16/09

i like J.J. Abrams Enterprise. it looks so much cooler.

By Kevin at 7:42 PM ON 09/16/09

I prefer the remastered original, although before they touched up the old lady I prefered the refit. For me the Abramsprise doesn't exist!

And BTW, the last image isn't of the refit, it's of the 1701-A that wasn't introduced until the end of "The Voyage Home", but it does look the same.

By agamemnon2366 at 8:00 PM ON 09/16/09

Since another J.J. is on its way, we have to stick with the new one. A disign that could only be more disturbingly ugly by having a typo in her name. Maybe it's because of having been built on the surface of Earth? :-) So big they lost track of the proportions? No, Movie-Refit it is, follwoed by TOS.

By BVK at 8:04 PM ON 09/16/09

I know this is heresy to most of you, but if a sci-fi genie came and offered me the chance to travel the stars in the Trek ship of my choice, I would go with the NX-01, hands down.

By hermy at 8:14 PM ON 09/16/09

it seem's like me everyone love the TMP version best.i remember sitting in the theater with my dad back in 79 when the first star trek movie came out and was blown away by it.the lines are so crisp and clean.

By Rob at 8:17 PM ON 09/16/09

BVK, I agree with you. The series Enterprise is one of three Trek shows that really matter (the others being the original & TNG). Everything else (new POS movie included) is cat pan liner. NX-01 wasn't a choice listed though, so I still go with the un-refitted model (or CGI version).

By Scotty at 8:21 PM ON 09/16/09

Ncc-1701 no bloody a b c d or e!

By Ric at 8:23 PM ON 09/16/09

Having been a ST fan since the original series, the original design was awesome. Of the movies, the A model is definitely a classic and my pick, BUT the E model (Soveriegn class) is the epitome of all the ST Enterprises.

By slim at 8:27 PM ON 09/16/09

enterprise-j
26th century
bad asss!

lets hope for a kick as Reliant in the new movie something that looks like a 23nd century Defiant!

By David A.M. Wilensky at 8:37 PM ON 09/16/09

I love the refit/A. As a kid, my first exposure to trek was through the movies and TNG, so the refit/A has always been very familiar to me and I love its vaguely art deco look.

By adrianp67 at 9:26 PM ON 09/16/09

I remember reading interviews with Franz Joseph who did the original ST Technical Manual and Andrew Probert, the designer of TMP Enterprise. These were guys with broad knowledge of contemporary naval vessel design and made a real effort to explain why the ship looked the way it did. Everything was worked out; everything had a reason for being there. Maybe that's why the TMP Enterprise has those clean lines and balanced design. You could almost say it's a design classic. I don't think the current crop of designers are getting anywhere near that. Too many pointless details on the hull, oversized nacelles, more interested in making the ship look like a hotrod than a working starship. TMP Enterprise for me.

By Clinton at 9:35 PM ON 09/16/09

I like all 3. And, if I need to give a reason, I'll say this:
Top: After 43 years, this Enterprise helped bring Trek back to life. And it is very recognizable as the Big E. No complaints here.
Middle: Will always remind me of my first encounters with Trek (yes, back in 1966)
Bottom: (generically calling it the "movie" Enterprise) This one was such a lovely big screen interpretation of the classic E.

By TearEmUp at 9:44 PM ON 09/16/09

If I can quote Scotty from his appearance on TNG. "Show me the Enterprise. No bloody A, B,C, or D."

That being said the Enterprise E was cool as hell, especially when we first see it coming out from behind that pocket of interstellar gas.....

By Spaceman Spiff at 9:45 PM ON 09/16/09

Of course there is only one choice as which I like the best. The one and only original.
Next is TMP and then the E.

The USS JJ Abrams is the ugliest Enterprise in the history of Star Trek, inside and out.

By treckkie01 at 10:30 PM ON 09/16/09

Being an old original trek fan I'd have to go with the middle one. It is my favorite and I even have the Xmas Tree Ornament, the first in the series, like it. If I had to go for a number
2 I'd say the bottom one.....

By computerboy2k at 11:37 PM ON 09/16/09

This Enterprise I also consider a true one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuttle_enterprise

By 2nd star to the right at 11:47 PM ON 09/16/09

I'll take the clean lines of the refit enterprise

As for the JJprise. Let me paraphrase the Klingon in "The Trouble With Tribbles". The JJprise shouldn't be hauling garbage...It should be hauled away as garbage!

By thunderstud at 12:11 AM ON 09/17/09

I've always loved the refit TOS movie Enterprise... something about it is just right. I hate Abrams ship.

By paul at 12:13 AM ON 09/17/09

TMP Enterprise, of course.

What a beauty! :)

By neuro at 1:02 AM ON 09/17/09

Give me the Probert Enterprise from TMP thru TUC, please. It's the most refined, most elegant, most practical version of the USS Enterprise ever designed, and I love it to bits. When I was a kid, I had huge TMP-era Enterprise posters on my wall, and on first seeing The Search for Spock at the cinema, I actually shed a tear or two at the self destruct sequence!

Stand out moments for me for the refit Big-E are: the initial Spacedock flyby in TMP, the escape from the Reliant at the end of TWOK, the stealing of the Enterprise in TSFS, and that gorgeous - albeit brief - flyby at the end of TVH.

By jjeguy at 1:12 AM ON 09/17/09

I like JJ Abrams New sleeker Enterprize. It made the most money than ANY other movie that Bill Shatner and gang did. Even the last four movies of the Next Generation .Bill Shatner had it's time, and so Patrick Steward They are still popular Just not as popular as the New Kids on Star Trek MOVIEThey Sold OUT ticketts at THE SUNDAY Show on August 2nd at Parsippany NJ HiltonCause Lenord Nimoy came

By J.J. at 2:00 AM ON 09/17/09

The Enterprise from the newest Star Trek movie is the best design as far as I'm concerned. I can't even begin to describe how amazingly well done Star Trek "XI" was. But the refit version from the original movies is rather appealing as well. The Enterprise from The Original Series looks like a poorly made toy.

By gxknight at 2:02 AM ON 09/17/09

I do like JJ's.. but I think my favorite of those 3 will be the refit.

By gj7564 at 3:59 AM ON 09/17/09

They all look the same to me.

By kingofscifi at 7:53 AM ON 09/17/09

The original has yar. She sleek, basic and too the point. The NCC-1701A was not a retro-fit but a whole new ship. She was the last of the constitution class.

She was a replacement for NCC-1701 that was a retrofit from TOS. She was redesiganted A to honor the ship before her.

I actually admit to crying in the theater when Kirk and crew approaced and kirk said "gentlemen we've come home" at the end of the Voyage.

Remember all the problems the A version had when it was being sent out on its new mission (and bad special effects in ST V). My vote is A

By Remember..... at 8:56 AM ON 09/17/09

Kirk said: "my friends,... we've come home..."
NCC 1701 / 1701-A the best lines. The is no reason to upgrade/retool perfection.

By Steelwraith at 9:22 AM ON 09/17/09

I liked the new movie except for the ship design. This new ship almost makes the Enterprise C look cool!

By marvi1 at 9:33 AM ON 09/17/09

I get what they were trying to do with the new version. It's supposed to be MUCH bigger than any of the previous versions, more along the lines of the Enterprise-E. However, it just looks completely unbalanced to me. Instead of looking powerful, the nacelles just look too big. The first refit is still my favorite, all sleek lines.

By Hudson922 at 9:48 AM ON 09/17/09

refit/A design has been and always will be my favorite. I'm not knocking any of the other designs but I just love the lines and its lighting beautiful ship design.

By lightstorm at 10:13 AM ON 09/17/09

I always preferred the TMP Enterprise. Great lines, just beautiful.

The new Enterprise is pretty ugly and it's engineering section looks like a water reclamation plant. It's a fricking eyesore.

By a different tim at 10:26 AM ON 09/17/09

I consider myself a matured trekkie so I would have to pick the TMP ship, however the knew one didnt seem to bug me and I actually liked the engineering room. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

By kingofscifi at 11:36 AM ON 09/17/09

Why cant you have both. Why is old always poor. It was the day. Without yesterday there would not be a today. Without the 1701 from the TOS there would be no bloody new ship design or movie. Appreciate what you have and had. For in the years to come this will also be butchered for a newer idea and a sleek design.

By meranthios at 11:58 AM ON 09/17/09

All are nice but the TMP is the best. It's design became the base look for the movie era ships. Beautiful and sleek.

By Crusade2267 at 11:58 AM ON 09/17/09

Probert and Eaves really know what they're doing.

JJ, Why did you guys only let John Eaves design the spacedock and not the ship?

By Drake at 12:21 PM ON 09/17/09

Like Scotty once said :
"N C C 1 7 0 1 , No Bloody A ,B ,C Or D "

I think that sums it up and we all know which one he talks about .

By Captain Calvin Grant at 12:40 PM ON 09/17/09

The original,

USS ENTERPRISE NCC-1701

Designed by Walter "Matt" Jefferies and Approved by show creator Gene Roddenberry.
Why mess with perfection?

By battleguard at 12:46 PM ON 09/17/09

I like what Crozia said about new one. Old one is still the best given that it handled all missions until the end. Retrofits are always just that upgrades - the original is still the underlying standard.
Why not the new one? Lets be real folks the new movie makes the ship seem like it's (as said before) a brewery and/or factory.
Not even NASA builds ships like that..Not pratical. They should have kept with the basic idea of the engine room in the original star trek.
Remember the ships (as seen on the last star trek tv show) was even before the new timeline and they did not have "piping" in the engineering room.
Fun movie, just not pretty..almost like they wanted it to seem primative.

By jdp13 at 12:55 PM ON 09/17/09

TMP Refit is the best hands down. I feel nostalgic about the orginal and don't really love JJ's version, but the refit in my opinion is the PERFECT design.

I didn't realize so many people apparantly feel the same way.

By SUPRH3R0 at 3:20 PM ON 09/17/09

Matt Jeffries original USS Enterprise 1701 from the original series is my starship of choice. Never really did care for the nacelles on the refit movie versions, except in the shot from ST IV: Undiscovered Country when General Chang says "tickle us, do we not laugh?..." etc. Best shot of that ship. Also, honorable mentions to Enterprise C, D, E, and JJ's 2009 version (don't care much for the Enterprise B).... and btw... F*** Archer's Enterprise NX-01!! ST: Enterprise put the whole franchise in a coma.

By OldGuyInOhio at 3:46 PM ON 09/17/09

1701-A !

Unfortunately, J.J.'s looks too "Art Deco" for me. It looks like something out of Buck Rogers.

By SethSJ at 4:58 PM ON 09/17/09

Has anyone considered the reason why the new version looks so weird is because it was designed to be more aerodynamic than its counterparts? Try seeing which ship has less wind resistance.

By Screenwriter72 at 5:17 PM ON 09/17/09

I personally LOVE TMP/TUC Enterprise, it's so sleek and cooler than the TOS version. I'm glad the Trek XI version has some of that same sleekness. As far as TV series Enterprises, the D is very cool, elegant, and functional!

If there was ever a "fan film" of TNG, please use a ship similar to the Enterprise-E as seen in "First Contact!!!" :D

By Rob at 5:43 PM ON 09/17/09

SethSJ, why would a spaceship need to be aerodynamic? No wind in outer space. Oh, that's right, that new wannabe movie was made for the less intellectual crowd, not for actual Star Trek fans. Another legend bites the dust.

By John at 6:31 PM ON 09/17/09

LOL! Rob, you hit the nail on the head!

By Ken Morrison at 6:41 PM ON 09/17/09

@RJ - Criticism Fail... NOT

All it says is, "What's your pick".

It's not asking for debates or DNA samples.

My pick is - 1701-A.

By DJ Jarak at 7:05 PM ON 09/17/09

They're all real... within the Star Trek universe though. The first was the original, the second was a design/refit of the original, and the 3rd is from an alternate time=line which makes it no less real than the first.

By Capt. Robert April at 12:21 AM ON 09/18/09

Give me the original, or give me Serenity!

With apologies to Patrick Henry.

By Whisperfoot at 7:02 AM ON 09/18/09

The TMP one. I think the Abrams ship looks better than the TOS ship. Sorry, but I've never liked the old '60s cheese of the original ship design, or the original uniforms for that matter. The episodes are good for what they are, but they could have been better if they'd had a bigger budget to work with.

By Meezer at 9:09 AM ON 09/18/09

Yep. 1701-E. TOS was just plain ugly even when it was new. TMP one is the best of the three here. The JJ ship looks a little hollow bellied. Someone needs to feed it.

By SethSJ at 9:27 AM ON 09/18/09

@Rob

It was built on the GROUND if you don't remember, and probably has the ability to land on planets if necessary. Use your brain.

By Rob at 11:21 AM ON 09/18/09

I havn't seen the new wannabe movie, but you cannot be serious that they claim the Enterprise was built on Earth & not in spacedock. That is the most rediculous thing I''ve ever heard. Besides, the Enterprise does not land on planets. Not ever.

By muadib at 2:46 PM ON 09/18/09

I will straighten out seth.Hey Seth, your comment makes no sense. Why would a starship that exclusivley travels in a airless, windless vacume of an enviroment need to be "aerodynamic??Did you forget space is a vacume?

By muadib at 2:52 PM ON 09/18/09

seth, seth, seth .you must be 9.it doesn't ever land on a planet.smaller ships of a completey different configuration(that means design) do,intrepid class, defient class nova class, etc.but not a constitution, exselsior, ambassador, galaxy,or soveirgn class ever.Got it ? now go back to your coloring book and leave the discusion for adults with more than a 5th grade mind set.

By discofred at 6:02 PM ON 09/18/09

Realy Sci Fi, can't you throw us a real poll we can vote on once in awhile. What happened to all those cool polls, they used to be the only reason I would visit the site. I hate the new brand and new scifi wire site. Oh ya I like the enterprise from TMP, but not like anyone is tallying up votes.

By SethSJ at 10:49 AM ON 09/19/09

Has no one seen seen TOS? It showed clearly in an episode that the NCC-1701 had the ability to fly through the air on the past-planet Earth. Not to mention the Voyager and the NX-01 were capable of flying through the air.

By SethSJ at 10:55 AM ON 09/19/09

And you don't build any kind of spaceship meant to hold large numbers of people without making it capable of flight and landing. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration could tell you Trekkies that!!

Any number of things(Transporter malfuntion, Shuttle bay blown to kingdom come, etc.) could occur that require the actual spaceship to land. What are they going to do? Have it simply burn up and turn all the people into ashes while it falls like a brick? Pretty stupid design flaw.

Speaking of bricks, seth, you are pretty thick...

There's nothing about contraptions in space operated and lived-in by sentient beings that mandates that they be able to land.

I, for one, would not like to be on the International Space Station, if, for whatever, reason someone decided they had to try to "land" it (On the moon, it is to be hoped.)

As for the movie building Enterprise on the ground, did it ever occur to you how odd it is that if they had to build it in the Earth's gravity well for calibration purposes, that they did not build it upside down in a more structurally stable three point position? I mean, if you are calibrating the internal artificial gravity of the ship anyway does it really matter its surface orientation and shouldn't spaceships be able to orbit in more than one orientation around various gravity wells anyway?

As for it being able to land the Enterprise in an emergency, you got me? The history of Trek production says the entire ship was never meant to land. However the saucer was intended to be able to separate in an emergency and so do but it was never established on screen in ToS. It wasn't until TNG that that feature had been "officially" established.

I like the new enterprise personally. It is something that it old that was revamped. It is different in some ways yet similar in other ways. You can't fairly compare it to the other two since it is a cross breed of the two. This new enterprise offered a new look with a old and classic design.
