Atlantis' 'Ronon' to play a new fantasy warrior king

\<i\>Atlantis\<\/i\>\' \'Ronon\' to play a new fantasy warrior king

Last we saw Jason Momoa, he was landing in San Francisco Bay along with the entire crew of Atlantis in the finale of Stargate Atlantis. The good news for fans of the strapping Hawaiian-born actor is that he will appear soon in HBO's upcoming Game of Thrones pilot, based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire.

Momoa is reportedly being cast as Drogo, according to the Winter Is Coming blog. Momoa supposedly announced the casting at Armageddon Expo in Melbourne, Australia:

He just got the call the other day, and he said it hadn't been announced. He'll be filming in Morocco and doesn't like horses, so isn't looking forward to the horseback scenes. He also said that it'll be his first nude scene and first sex scene. ...

He also said when he went in for the audition he did a haka, as he thought it would be perfect for Drogo.

(A haka is a traditional Maori dance, so we've just learned.)

Here's how Wikipedia describes Momoa's character:

Drogo is a powerful khal, or warlord, of the Dothraki people, a tribal nation of expert riders and raiders in the steppes beyond the Free Cities. He is an accomplished warrior and has never been defeated in battle.

We're just spit-balling here, but it sounds like a good fit for the man who was Ronon.

The large ensemble cast also includes Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Kit Harrington, Jennifer Ehle, Jack Gleeson, Peter Dinklage and Harry Lloyd.

I generally expect a certain amount of bad information from this site but really? The author had never heard of the haka before? Where has he been? And next time, how about you consult a source other than Wikipedia, or at least don't cite it openly it just makes you seem that much more pathetic and a bad journalist (if that is what you consider yourself?).

By ArghSoAngry! at 2:22 PM ON 10/19/09

Yeah exactly sgasg! Where was the author during 8th grade Maori History! And certainly a scholarly article should have been consulted when writing the description of an obscure fantasy character! Let's make sure we get our important fictional facts untainted by the general populace!

@sgasg! - really? get a life. i never post comments, but your comments just inspired me. it's called a website, it's for entertainment purposes. if you want hard hitting journalism, then go read the wall street journal, or good housekeeping, whatever floats your boat.

Really??

By boatfloated at 2:30 PM ON 10/19/09

HA.......... He's gonna get his boat floated

By divephotog at 2:31 PM ON 10/19/09

Trouble is really? that there are no real journals dealing with the sci-fi side of entertainment.

We do turn here, but also, we do like more firm stories other than 'well, rumor has it..."

This story is more of a 'rumor has it' ("hasn't been announced") than fact. - kh

Just curious sgag, what you would have liked to have seen instead of this story? I mean, what hard hitting journalistic story are you looking for about Momoa being cast in this TV show?

By flux cheese at 2:54 PM ON 10/19/09

Most journalism is "well, rumor has it" so I don't know what you are talking about..

Anyway, Momoa is awesome, looking forward to hearing more about this.. Althought HBO is still on my s**t list for there cancelling spree.. Deadwood, Carnivale, Rome.. WTF?!!

By flux cheese at 2:56 PM ON 10/19/09

*their* whoops

By sorta at 3:36 PM ON 10/19/09

I kinda agree with sasg! abou the whole haka thing since i live in europe and the haka is danced before rugby games (which are watched a lot here) but i agree with everyone else that this isn't a true facts kinda of website

By Hakabaka at 3:55 PM ON 10/19/09

Forget haka! What the #$!& is a Maori?

By maori at 4:00 PM ON 10/19/09

@Hakabaka- maori = natives of new zealand

By RMS at 4:16 PM ON 10/19/09

The Hollywood Reporter also announced the casting...I believe THR is where industry insiders get their info.

By gorehound696 at 4:53 PM ON 10/19/09

I like that he will be in this show.I liked Atlantis and it will be good to see more Ronon !!!!

If you're going to get so upset about poor quality information, rather than just going "ha ha, you're so wrong, I'm so much smarter than you," would you like to perhaps prove it by providing the correct information. There is no shame in ignorance, and not being familiar with this dance, or of the novels, all I know is that there may be wrong information in this article, not what is correct. If you're such a well educated, erudite person, perhaps you would like to share rather than gloating about your apparent superiority.

I'm just happy that Jason has new work - met him a couple of years back, and he is a lovely, kind, welcoming man.

Most people in the world do not know what a haka is. Insulting someone because they admit they just learned what it was marks seriously bad character of the one doing the insulting, not the one being insulted.

As has been stated, the vast majority of entertainment news is the rumor has it variety. They said where they got their information, so they in fact did their jobs as entertainment journalists. They weren't writing a scientific article, so Wikipedia is a reasonable source for something like this.

Can we please try to put a lid on the insulting comments which are placed only to insult someone for the sake of insulting someone and for no rational point? It makes the posters doing so look childish, not intelligent.

@maori: "maori = natives of new zealand"

What the heck is New Zealand?

JFWY. :)

i say bring back Ronon and that red laser bolt firing gun he had! I miss atlantis so much! Ronon would blow a hole in a wall if you asked him. Hey sgasg!, i cannot say your name! it is too ack-sack sounding. Do you like shaka-kahn??

By Ryan E at 8:24 PM ON 10/19/09

The books are great, this show will be awesome on HBO. His part won't require much dialogue but he will have some great scenes.

By diesel at 7:40 AM ON 10/20/09

Jason Momoa (Ronin) would make a great Bishop in Xmen.

Christopher Judge (Stargate SG1) should play Apocalypse in Xmen 4. Jason Momoa will be Bishop helping the Xmen battle the Sentinels in Xmen 5.

That would be hot.

How can I make this happen?

By me at 12:31 PM ON 10/20/09

What is it with the spoilers in these articles? Why start this by saying how Atlantis ended?

By Wahine Lani at 9:54 PM ON 10/20/09

Jason Momoa would be great in any role. If you paid attention to his portrayal of Ronan Dex, you will see he has tremendous range theatrically. I look forward to seeing him in this role.
