Ever find yourself watching a movie or TV show featuring a beautiful female scientist character only to think, "She's no scientist"? Us too! Only once we thought about it further, we realized that some of those scientists were hot and plausible, some were neither, and most fell somewhere in between.
In honor of tonight's second-season premiere of Sanctuary (10 p.m. ET/PT on Syfy), starring Amanda Tapping as Dr. Helen Magnus, we put together this chart, in which we rate sci-fi's sexy scientists by their hotness vs. their plausibility.

So, what if I actually wanted to be able to read it?
By nilus at 9:43 AM ON 10/09/09
A link to a bigger picture would be nice, its a bit small
By nilus at 9:46 AM ON 10/09/09
And I don't think I would call Tara Reid "not hot"
By Robert V Aldrich at 9:46 AM ON 10/09/09
Okay, hold up. Explain to me why Agent Skully is shown to be the paragon of the hot scientists. She's above Samantha Carter which I'll take issue with, but above Zoe Saldana's Uhura (with nothing to say of Nichelle Nichols)? Just talking on the sheer hotness scale, NO! Gillian Anderson is a truly lovely woman, but come on! And Evelyn Carnahan is on the 'Not Hot' side of the equation? This scale needs to be seriously recalibrated.
By Dhrystone at 9:58 AM ON 10/09/09
What I want to know is how Helen Hunt ranks higher than the uber sexy Rachel Taylor? Yes, Helen Hunt looks good in Twister, but there's NO way she outranks Rachel Taylor.
By gflo at 9:59 AM ON 10/09/09
woo hoo Scully. Hot, smart. Perfect!
By Ms. Sin at 10:05 AM ON 10/09/09
They have Amy Acker twice for Dollhouse but only one character is a "scientist", her Dr. Saunders persona, not Whiskey.
By Meezer at 10:10 AM ON 10/09/09
How did Amanda Tapping make it into the Hot category? Not Hot but plausible maybe. The "All Amanda all the time" approach that Tapping has is really bringing the show that used to be Sanctuary and featured other characters down.
By tigger16 at 10:13 AM ON 10/09/09
This scale has a built-in flaw: the "eye of the beholder" variable. Notice that the issues people have are concerning the "hotness" factor, not the "scientist" factor. People more readily agree on plausibility than hotness.
By Marty B. at 10:13 AM ON 10/09/09
Ms. Sin, I wonder if that was an editorial mistake. Yes, she could be on the chart for Whiskey/Saunders; but one can argue she also belongs to be on the chart because of Angel's Fred, who before she fell through a dimensional portal was an aspiring physicist.
By Marty B. at 10:15 AM ON 10/09/09
I meant to say, in other words, Acker should be on the chart twice, they just labeled the roles wrong.
By Herdnerfer at 10:21 AM ON 10/09/09
Why isn't Emily Deschanel from Bones not on this list, i think she would beat out Scully any day of the week....
By exiguus at 10:28 AM ON 10/09/09
Hey ..what about Space: 1999? Barbara Bain as Doctor Helena Russell. Not what I call hot but should be plausible. Then there is Maya played by Catherine Schell. A little higher in the hot meter but way low on the plausible.
By TrueEddie at 10:28 AM ON 10/09/09
How about Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine on ST:VOY
By Rusco at 10:30 AM ON 10/09/09
I like how Rachel Weisz starts off as not hot but plausible in The Mummy and ends up as hot but not plausible in the sequel. She changes that much over two movies?
By exiguus at 10:35 AM ON 10/09/09
I just thought of another one. Dr. Zira from Planet of the Apes ... How can you leave her off this list??!?!
By tcodee at 10:45 AM ON 10/09/09
Any one have a magnifying glass?
By IronOre at 10:55 AM ON 10/09/09
I don't get how the same actress switches sides on the hotness factor. The only one that makes sense is Amy Acker with scars and without, but the Rachel Weisz one boggles my mind. Of course, hotness is really in the eye of the beholder so this chart really only works for the people that made it.
The other axis, plausibility is a different matter. I completely agree that Jessica Alba and Denise Richards are very implausible scientists.
By underxenith at 11:17 AM ON 10/09/09
Is Rachel Weisz even a scientist in the Mummy movies? She's a librarian... I guess if she's part archaeologist you can call her a scientist. (She's always hot though.)
By UnRiel at 11:37 AM ON 10/09/09
Jodie Foster in Contact is missing, attractive, but not hot & Plausible as a scientist.
I disagree that Elizabeth Shue was neither hot nor plausible. Her body was great in the Saint, face pretty good too.
By jolinar at 11:39 AM ON 10/09/09
@ squinting, nilus, & tcodee
I can see it just fine.

By PeteC at 12:03 PM ON 10/09/09
What a load of crap! You lot really do need to get out more!
How very juvenile and extremely sexist too. Cretins.
By cooblob at 12:06 PM ON 10/09/09
What about Hannah Spearritt from Primeval! She is definitely hot and plausible!
By Just Me at 12:14 PM ON 10/09/09
"I just thought of another one. Dr. Zira from Planet of the Apes ... How can you leave her off this list??!?!"
But if you wanted to give her a kiss she would say how damn ugly you are.
By Iis4island at 12:17 PM ON 10/09/09
Excuse me, but what about the boys?
By will at 12:55 PM ON 10/09/09
Google Tara Reid in bikini and you'll see why she is so not hot anymore...
By superfly at 12:55 PM ON 10/09/09
Scully is too short to be universally attractive, unless your asian.
By emilymargrit at 1:17 PM ON 10/09/09
@underxenith Rachel Weisz was too a scientist--library science, man! And no way is Rachel Weisz not hot, ever.
By jrod at 1:21 PM ON 10/09/09
Bones... Emily Deschanel should be on top.
By Reaper2K at 1:30 PM ON 10/09/09
Agreed, jrod. Emily Deschanel is tops in hotness and plausibility. But is Bones considered sci-fi? Not really.
Amanda Tapping on Sanctuary is hotter than Dr. Carter on SG-1? Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
As for Amy Acker, I think her Dr. Saunders character needs to be on the hot side of the graph (scars or no scars) and Whiskey should be removed.
By Just Me at 1:35 PM ON 10/09/09
How about Justina Vail as Dr. Olga Vukavitch in 7 Days?
By CrazyOkie at 1:42 PM ON 10/09/09
Did anyone else notice they have Rachel Weisz listed twice - and in two mutually exclusive categories - for playing the same character? She's listed as "Not hot but plausible" for The Mummy and "Hot but not plausible" for The Mummy Returns. How does that work?
For my money, I would list Helen Hunt as both hot and plausible. I think a poll is in order!
By Chris at 1:51 PM ON 10/09/09
I've got another one. Mira Sorvino in Mimic. Very hot but imo not too plausible.
By scifiluvr at 1:58 PM ON 10/09/09
I am so happy that Gillian Anderson came in first... she is so completely awesome. I hope she decides to make another kick ass creepy show like the x-files. Gillian Anderson rocks!!!!
By WooHoo! at 2:01 PM ON 10/09/09
alright SCULLY!!! :)
By Just Me at 2:13 PM ON 10/09/09
How about Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Lindsey Brigman in The Abyss?
By muadib at 2:19 PM ON 10/09/09
The choices did seem to not make alot of sense untill i realized they were made by the same brain trust that though changing "sci fi" to "siffy" was a bright idea. Then i understood the choices>
By narwastu at 2:23 PM ON 10/09/09
go Scully !! GO !! Ohh how i missed her.. She's really a role model !
By lostandconfused at 2:23 PM ON 10/09/09
just thought I'd mention Star trek's uhura is NOT a doctor or scientist, she's a communications specialist (doest not require much study to work a radio and be multilingual) and who the hell can even read this chart?
By jason at 3:08 PM ON 10/09/09
Elizabeth Shue in The Saint? Really?
Isn't that the one where she invents cold fusion? That character is only slightly more plausible than Tara Reid. Granted she's hotter, but still...scraping the barrel.
By altereto at 3:27 PM ON 10/09/09
How can we forget Heather Graham as Dr. Judy Robinson from the '98 Lost in Space film? ...was she too far down the implausible scale to show up on the chart?
By Just Me at 3:43 PM ON 10/09/09
Or what about Barbara Bain as Doctor Helena Russell on Space: 1999?
By Sithboy at 3:58 PM ON 10/09/09
Ok, how about a chart of the men?
By scI FI WIRE STAFF at 4:09 PM ON 10/09/09

Where's the male list?
By notrebud at 5:08 PM ON 10/09/09
If you put in the Ohuras, then why leave our Seven of Nine (ST: Voyager) and T'Pol (ST: Enterprise).
By Memento at 5:35 PM ON 10/09/09
I couldn't agree more with the #1 in this chart. Dana Scully is the most beautiful and convincing female scientist on television ever. After her, all others become irrelevant. I honestly laugh at anyone that thinks that the chick from 'Bones' is even a tenth as awesome.
By Lochnload at 6:28 PM ON 10/09/09
Scully ? Really ? Your kidding right ?
Amanda Tapping aka Sam Carter SG1 has got to win this one. She's better locking AND a better scientist. Plausible ? Comparing the settings of the two series, Sam wins again.
It's a fix ! Vote for SAM !
By Pendulous Richard at 6:48 PM ON 10/09/09
Uhura a scientist?
By Mandy at 7:10 PM ON 10/09/09
Ah, nerdom. You never cease to amaze me.
By Lochnload at 7:11 PM ON 10/09/09
Hannah Spearritt from Primevil- cheers cooblob I forgot about her - clip > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0QMShbcudU
By Jenny Wrayne at 7:56 PM ON 10/09/09
How come intelligence =/= brains? Thirding a request for a male list. People seem to be under the delusion that super hot scientist guys makes perfect sense but hot women are frauds.
By harperbruce at 8:00 PM ON 10/09/09
Yes, but where would Dr. Temperance Brennan of Fox's Bones fall on this scale...? Hmmm; somewhere around a (9,9) on the x,y scale, I'd say
By dbroncosfan at 9:22 PM ON 10/09/09
Ugh I dislike redheads and I don't find ultra white skin attractive. So making Gillian Anderson a "10" is obviously the writers subjective choice.
Though having a poll and then redoing the chart sounds like fun.
By chumline at 10:32 PM ON 10/09/09
ok what about Kary (Mythbusters) Byron ~ ok she's kinda a real scientist, kinda hot and kinda plausable!
By jolinar at 10:49 PM ON 10/09/09
Hannah Spearritt as a hot scientist, oh yeah!!!
But don't forget this:
S Club There Ain't No Party Like An S Club Party Gonna Show You How...
By Omen at 12:20 AM ON 10/10/09
Scully is & always will be the Flamed Haired Goddess!
By SSior at 1:17 AM ON 10/10/09
I think the only reason Amy Acker's Whiskey is listed seperately than Dr Saunders is because of the Season two opener for Dollhouse in which she makes the moves on Topher. I agree that Saunders and Whiskey should be combined into one listing and Fred taking the place as Hot but not Plausible... a little higher on the Hot side, though...
By dave at 3:38 AM ON 10/10/09
Scully gets my vote.
By Jayde1701 at 8:48 AM ON 10/10/09
Emily Deschanel's Bones is tops in my book. She is totally plausible as a scientist, it's her raison d'etre, and she manages to take your breath away even surrounded by all that gore!
By corey2002 at 9:56 AM ON 10/10/09
you have amy acker listed twice-once under hot/ plausible and once under not hot/plausible all for playing the same character
By skyhawk at 11:02 PM ON 10/10/09
Scully with Bones running a close second.
By z18 at 12:10 AM ON 10/13/09
I find it funny that Rachel Weisz went from 'not hot but plausible' in the first "Mummy" to 'hot but not plausible' in the sequel.
By jedimaster at 4:33 PM ON 10/16/09
No Jadzia Dax?
*sniff*
By dummies at 7:26 PM ON 10/16/09

By nicklareau at 7:44 PM ON 10/16/09
How about Liv Tyler for the Incredible Hulk? I thought she was hot and reasonably plausable.
By membrain at 8:14 PM ON 10/16/09
It kinda occured to me that T'Pol and Scully have a lot in common mentality-wise. Anyway, even if I don't agree with some parts, and miss some ladies there (Jadzia Dax! Super-hot! And super scientist too. T'Pol..) it's a very nice effort! Thanks scifi wire staff!
By V at 2:18 PM ON 10/17/09
