Is Klingon viral video teasing a new Star Trek project?

Is Klingon viral video teasing a new \<i\>Star Trek\<\/i\> project?

A propaganda film that just went viral calls for us to embrace our invaders as Earth joins the Klingon Empire. But is the animated video merely one fan's Trek tribute? Or could it be the promise of something greater?

Check out the video below to learn more.

The Klingon language experts over at TrekMovie noticed that the final frame of the video contained Klingon letters spelling out a Web site address—http://www.tlhingan.org/.

One of the things they discovered at that site—in addition to cool Trek-related content—was that the Flash animation was made by Bad Monkey Studios, which was involved in the 2008 immigration-related Star Trek parody "Don't Deport Me Scotty" on behalf of one of its clients, Breakthrough:

So—why the new video and site? Is it just a fun project by avowed Trekkie Mark Farinas, head of Bad Monkey Studios? Or is he laying the groundwork for a larger campaign on behalf of one of his clients?

We haven't figured that out ourselves yet. But whatever the answer, the more we watch the new video, the more we're ready to bow to our new alien overlords!

I liked their throwing in Kor at the very end there, if that was indeed intended to be Kor (it sure did look like him), but why wasn't the video accompanied by a subtitle translation at the bottom of the screen?

Hmm? Anyone speak Klingon? This looks freaking fantastic, whatever it leads- or doesn't- lead to.

I think the next movie will end with a cliff hanger. The cliff hanger will show the Earth bustling under fire from a planet destruction weapon. Volcanoes will be popping up everywhere, with the Earth fixing to crack open and explode. The Enterprise's fate will also be in question as it will be last seen doing a kamakazee run at the weapon.

The cliff hanger concludes like this:

The weapon has auto defenses, and decides that it is necessary to turn directly at the Enterprise to fire. The Enterprise launches it shuttle pods which careen right into the heart of the beam before it comes into focus, and temporarily disables the weapon. By the time the weapon returns, Earth's defenses have been rebuilt, and with a little extra help from allies, is able to stop the weapon from firing again. Our heroes then go after the weapon, and are eventually able to destroy it.

Really looking forward to this. I hope they just go with Klingons over Khan as the next villan. And do some next gen shout outs.
Only 32 long, LONG, horrible months until we know!!!!

By azsinz at 7:51 PM ON 10/26/09

they can do both a klingon and a khan thing
A Khan and the Botony Bay are still floating in space i think they are 5 to 8 years from when the Prime Enterprise found them
B since Nero screwed up the timeline and was destroying Fed and Klingon ships
Starfleet and Kling were on hightened state
(the movie has the bulk of the fleet "somewhere else")

Prime Spock would have given the Federation Intelligence
info about the BORG, V'ger, Dominion, the whale(tincan)probe, Khan
or anything that would save Federation lives

my thing good ol section 31 learns of khan
"rescues" the ship to make there own augments who "get loose" (with a 23rd century Defiant class ship "reliant" )and mess with the Klingon Empire( 80% with the augment vius and are without ridges)
kirk has to come save the day and unravels
section 31s plot
khan could be dead already or still frozen to stop people complaing they are recycling old storyline

they can just make the old stories new and better with future knowledge in a new universe!!!

By ryan23 at 8:24 PM ON 10/26/09

Excellent points azsinz! Never thought of it that way, but that could totally work. As I said, a simple 31.999 agonizing months to go until we find out.

As well as Kor, for it is most certainly he, the prison commandant of Rura Penthe from The Undiscovered Country is in it earlier, sat at a table (hey, Morgan Sheppard gets everywhere!) and the freighter that gets destroyed is, I believe, a design from More Troubles, More Tribbles. These guys know their Trek.

I also heartily approve of the use of the spirit of Trek in the second linked film - well done!

today is a good day to die... just take a Klingon down with you... first.

Save the Federation!

The meta keywords of the website include: "movie trailer, Star Trek, cartoon, cartoon trailer, series, television, trailer" ... could it be for a new Star Trek animated TV show?

By izmunuti at 1:06 AM ON 10/27/09

Dear JJ Abrams & Co., Please do NOT make the next Trek movie about Klingons. Thank You!

By Vanny at 3:35 AM ON 10/27/09

I agree with Ismunuti - no Klingons please. I really like Star Trek, yet the Klingons bored me.

Looks like a parody of China's Propaganda TV.

Makes me want to join the klingon empire!

By divephotog at 10:11 AM ON 10/27/09

What surprises me is that there has not been a new incarnation of the Klingon tales from Paramount and/or the guys in the Captains chair of the ST sagas.

Star Trek: The Klingon Empire - The Early Days

Imagine all the conquering, raping, pillaging, and plundering, deleit, subterfuge, and the best of the Klingon way, rising to power through coups and murder. Not to mention the great graphics possibilities of space battles and planet anhillations that are possible!

Not only that, they could tie into the Enterprise first episode, and so many other incarnetions of the ST saga. - kh

Whatever it is, it's not related to the official star trek universe. Notice the name: thlingans. That means it's a parody. If it were really related to Trek, they wouldn't call them anything but Klingons.

By MCP-001 at 12:39 PM ON 10/27/09

I loved the Klingon "Propaganda" clip.

The second clip was as pathetic as that article from the group protesting the 'Illegal Alien" costume.

By SJ at 12:47 PM ON 10/27/09

The song in the background is a Turkish song about birds. I used to sing it as a child. And some of the words spoken are also Turkish.

By bb at 1:13 PM ON 10/27/09

Yes the song is Turkish and about flying birds and I think it is consistent with the bird of preys :)

Chinese Klingons? What the hell?

By thekatwoman at 11:39 AM ON 10/28/09

Yes, what the hell. It looks like little chinese kids at the olympics and sounds like them to.

The propaganda video itself is very cool and creative but I doubt it has anything to do with STXII. I don't think Orci & Kurtzman have even figured out yet what they want to do there, and I've seen no indication as of yet that the Klingons will have any significant role whatsover (though I love Klingons, and I'd like to see them, ridgeless or no). Clearly the video is at least based on 23rd Century Klingons, since the destroyed Constitution-class starship in the video would indicate that whenever this video is supposed to have been made, the Federation and the Klingons are still arch enemies.

I would love it if the movie showed how the Klingons and the Federation became enemies in the first place. Granted, it's set about 40 years too late to show the actual impetus for their hostile relationship, but it could at least delve into the history of it a bit more than any of the previous series or movies did. I've always imagined that the Klingons started out, thanks to Archer's efforts, as allies of Earth and it's other Coalition partners during the Romulan Wars. Then somehow, after the wars ended and the Coalition transformed into the Federation, they became enemies—possibly because the Klingons viewed the new Federation as a threat, or at least an impediment to their expansion into what had been up to then Romulan territory. Or the formation of the Federation could be analogous to the creation of NATO: the Klingons refused to withdraw from some planets they conquered during the war, causing an "iron curtain" of sorts to be drawn through the Alpha Quadrant and the creation of the Federation as a bulwark against Klingon aggression. They say they want the next movie to be an allegory—there's one for them right there, albeit a historical one.

@azsinz Interesting ideas but I doubt Spock would let the Federation know all those details about the future. Remember from his POV the Temporal Prime Directive still applies. Also your movie concept sounds kind of busy and confusing—I can see Khan, Klingons, or even Section 31 in the next film, but not all three.

@LordofKnavery I believe "thlingan" is how Klingon is spelled in the actual Klingon language...using Klingon characters of course.

@jedimaster I'll excuse you not knowing this based on your handle, but the Klingons have always born a close resemblance to the Chinese, at least from STIII on. Originally they were supposed to represent the Russians and the Romulans were supposed to be the Chinese, but in practice it has more typically been the reverse. Perhaps the video was just trying to play on those similarities. At any rate I doubt its some sort of viral marketing for the new movie...it's just way too soon for that.

The other video is just stupid and ignorant, both of Trek and of real-world politics. I won't dignify it by dissecting all that's wrong with it; it should be clear to anyone who really understands Star Trek, or immigration.

By azsinz at 7:44 PM ON 10/28/09

the pov wont apply
cause hes stuck and the timeline has already changed
there was no directive when people switch from the mirror universe
(tho they should)

with vulcan being destroyed and the race an endagerspecies
im sure spock would do everything to make sure that vulcans and humans (in effect the alpha quadrant) would survice and prevent any unneccary death.
tho he may not tell about everyhting right off the bat
the probe v'ger and the Botany bay first

besides section 31 could get the info in seditious ways (i would)

i can see abrams using section 31 since he loves conspiracys
just dont over do it

KLINGONS KICK ASS!
Who didnt cheer when they showed up in
ds9 and outflanked them

come on you all did!
q'pla!

By azsinz at 7:46 PM ON 10/28/09

oops how could i forget that !
damn targ wanted out!

By Hylaar at 3:21 PM ON 10/29/09

LordOfKnavery: Please google before you post.

"tlhIngan" is Klingon for "Klingon". See Wikipedia.

By Spaceman Spiff at 1:26 AM ON 10/30/09

They even had the aztecing pattern on the Enterprise. That was cool.

By reubster at 10:56 PM ON 11/11/09

The physical appearance of the Klingons indicates a transition state from the original star trek klingons and the TNG versions. These klingons may be partially cured from the augment virus from Star Trek Enterprise. They are wearing the clothing from the original series but they appear more like the klingons from TNG.

I hope the next Star Trek movie have Klingons looking like these versions.
