District 9 creator's next sci-fi epic gets the go-ahead

Neill Blomkamp at Comic-Con

With District 9 a hit, director Neill Blomkamp is turning his talents to his next movie, which he told us a while back would be a balls-out sci-fi epic, and today the good news is that someone's financing it and it'll begin production next year.

Variety reported:

Media Rights Capital has committed to the next film by "District 9" writer-director Neill Blomkamp. The untitled sci-fier will begin production by the middle of next year. ...

MRC is giving Blomkamp creative freedom and a production commitment that isn't contingent on domestic distribution. ...

"MRC is letting me make the film I want to make, and that is by far the most important thing here," Blomkamp told Daily Variety. "The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, (one) that comes directly from me."

Blomkamp will begin writing the movie and getting its visual effects prepared.

Earlier this year, Blomkamp gave us a hint about the movie's storyline:

"It's a pretty epic science fiction film that takes place not on Earth," Blomkamp said. "So that probably sounds like pretty much every other science fiction film out there. But it has a pretty unique, awesome twist to it, which I'll have to make it before I can tell you. ... It's based on a planet, yeah. It's based on another planet. It's actually based on two other planets."

This is great news, as Blomkamp demonstrated a unique vision and brilliant technical skills in bringing District 9 to life. Such a fiercely independent moviemaker should have creative freedom, so we're glad to see someone's willing to grant him that.

But what about District 10, the expected follow-up to the alien-internment movie? No word, and now it looks like it'll have to wait for the as-yet-untitled sci-fi epic.

Yup. It is going to be epic, be about something with planets, and it will be sci-fi.

Wondered if he pitched the project to those funding the effort as suscintly? -kh

I guess we'll get to see if this guy is a one-hit-wonder or a promising new sci-fi director filling in the shoes that George Lucas so spectacularly bailed out of with the new Star Wars movies.

D-9 was good, and barely an example of "a unique vision and brilliant technical skills". All wrapped up in a mediocre story and plot.

It's too soon to go ape sheet over the announcement that this director will try and do it again. Working up feelings of joy based on a promise from a story yet written.

You don’t often hear “…giving… creative freedom and a production commitment that isn't contingent on domestic distribution…”

D-9 was unique. I liked it very much. I hope that he can do it again.

Well, at least it doesnt sound like another damned re-boot/re-make!!

I wasn't really impressed that much by District 9. So, we'll see. I hope he can shake loose of the industry, and do well with his original works.

There are a lot of things that bother me about D9, but Blomkamp has me as a customer for life, now. This is good news.

About D9, it was a remake. At least to those who were of theatre going age in 1988, which explains why many may not remember 'Alien Nation'. Hmmmm Aliens, who come to earth for sanctuary, holed up in a small area, etc etc...

divephotog...did you see either movie. They were nothing alike other than they were aliens from a ship. The Alien Nation group were not totally segregated, many were in the population and otherwise they acted like the humans...nothing like the situation in D9.

after reading comments on this site, I see constant comments about reboot/remakes. I agree for the most part. TV and Hollywood have lost their imagination. There are whole libraries out there full of great scifi/fantasy. Unfortunately most are relegated to bad b movies if they are made at all. Peter Jackson was the exception right now. JJ Abrams could do wonders with these classics.

If you are a true fan of scifi like I am. You can look past the bad sfx and bad acting and appreciate the premise of the movie itself and enjoy the story.
