The live ratings for Fox's Dollhouse had leveled off as of the third episode, which aired Friday, but the good news for fans is that new numbers from DVRs are great, and because of that Fox has decided to air all of the 13 episodes that have been ordered for this season so far.
Who expected that??
Here's the scoop: The audience for Joss Whedon's show jumped by more than half when factoring in the people who watched it later on DVRs, according to The Hollywood Reporter:
"We're going to run all the episodes," Fox scheduling chief Preston Beckman said. "We're not saying we're happy with those numbers, or accept them, but we don't have to overreact."Premiere-week DVR data released Monday showed that the second-season "Dollhouse" debut climbed 50% from its very modest base of a 1.0 rating in the adults 18-49 demo. Beckman said DVR results have played a role in the show's fate, though he wasn't surprised by the new numbers.
"It's one of the reasons that we brought 'Dollhouse' back; we knew it was DVR-friendly," Beckman said. "Hopefully we'll see the overnight ratings increase from week to week. With some shows, you have to look at the bigger picture."
Another big surprise? They're even contemplating a third season! Fox says it will decide whether to keep the show going after the second season ends. Of course, they still have to decide whether to order the "back nine" episodes of the current season to make up a full 22.
Whedon says the 13th hour will be designed to wrap the series if it's canceled.
"We'll definitely have closure but will leave some doors open," said Whedon, who's shooting the eighth episode.

Guess I will have to set up an old VCR, and get off the DVR with this,so it can die appropriately... -kh
By bigalOSU at 1:33 PM ON 10/13/09
I will never watch this show! It is worse than Dark Angel (you know that was a bad show too) and Eliza DEUCHE-ku is a terrible actress. Pull the plug FOX!
By marimba26 at 1:34 PM ON 10/13/09
Personally, I'm glad. I DVR Universe and watch Dollhouse. I'm a Stargate fan of old but the writing on Dollhouse is a lot better than anything the Stargate group has turned out in years. So I'll continue just the way I am, thank you very much.
By Marty B. at 1:38 PM ON 10/13/09
dive, if you want the show to die, why are you even recording it in the first place?
Thought the show must have a DVR following, being a Friday show for a demo that usually has other things to do on Friday nights. I've watched almost all of it on Hulu except for last Friday's when I caught it at a friends. I was actually talking about it yesterday and two people wanted me to stop talking because they hadn't watched their DVR recordings yet.
@Dissappointed, relax, the fact that a cable network out performed a "big network" actually is still kinda big deal news in the biz.
By TrueEddie at 1:49 PM ON 10/13/09
I agree with Disappointed. It sort of angers me that you rave about SGU beating out Dollhouse. Don't we want both of these shows to succeed? I know I do.
By sexiebuddha at 1:49 PM ON 10/13/09
I gotta stop recording that show. I didn't even relaize it till I flicked open my DVR and I had all this dollhouse esipodes. And now the show lives on. Man.
By Allison&Jack at 2:13 PM ON 10/13/09
lol Its not like your DVR is actually contributing to the ratings numbers.
But even if it did, you'd have to actually watch the show in the first week for it to count for anything, they don't care if you record the show but never watch it.
By Summer at 2:23 PM ON 10/13/09
"DEUCHE-ku" Seriously? What are you, 11?
So you don't like the show and you don't think that she is a great actress, but honestly, leave the 5th grade name-calling out of it.
By Marty B. at 2:52 PM ON 10/13/09
bigal @ OSU probably doesn't do well on the termpapers. I'm not sure whether he's calling Dushku a German ("deutsch") or a "douche".
protip: get copyediting input from someone besides the other stoners in your frat house cutting class.

I am glad Fox has decided to factor in DVR viewership. As someone who works nights I am rarely home to watch any show when it airs. At least now i know that my schedule can be taken into consideration, that and all the others who are out having a good time on friday and come home to watch shows late and still be factored into the overall picture.
By Tempus13 at 3:10 PM ON 10/13/09
I enjoy Dollhouse and will continue to watch it.
I enjoy all of actors on the show. They do a fine job, and Eliza and the other dolls get to play completely different characters every week. It's a great challenge for an actor, and I think they pull it off nicely.
The main story this season is still a little fuzzy; is Ballard still trying to bring down the Dollhouse and rescue Caroline? Are there other Dollhouses? What about Alpha? Hopefully these questions will be answered as the remaining expisodes progress.
By jpl1976 at 3:24 PM ON 10/13/09
Oh so FOX is willing to "listen" to the number of people that record this on DVR....and yet they wouldnt do the same for the Sarah Connor Chronicles? Good Lord the folks at FOX have their heads so firmly up their proverbial asses that they have no clue anymore (and they havent for quite sometime)
By Felipe 058 at 3:48 PM ON 10/13/09
"We're not saying we're happy with those numbers, or accept them, but we don't have to overreact."
1) Well Hell, that's a first for them, considering Firefly did a whole lot better than Dollhouse is doing. Not that I want Dollhouse gone, it's just that Faux is full of a bunch of hypocrites with double standards.
2) Why do they think these numbers are so bad? ScyFy has "better" numbers than these and they're perfectly content with them. And if Faux expects "better" numbers, why don't they just create more of the high-rating drivel that is network television? Intelligent science fiction like Dollhouse should be on ScyFy, seeing as it is in fact SCIENCE FICTION and thus should be on a SCIENCE FICTION channel. Silly Faux, trying to get high ratings with smart shows.

So sorry. Dollhouse has been removed from DVR. I had to make room for SGU, Sanctuary and SW: Clone Wars.
The two episodes to open season two, were completely boring (for me at least) and did not advance the story at all. But hey. I am sure Mr. Whedon will make lots of money still and develop another show full of sex and titillation to satisfy the appropriate demographic.
By Shaddoe at 4:12 PM ON 10/13/09
Fantastic! This is awesome news! I knew that DVR would help as I regularly record Dollhouse on DVR and watch it later.
this is great news, and the contemplation of not only a full compliment of 22 episodes, but the possibility of a 3rd season is fantastic!
By Mike at 4:56 PM ON 10/13/09
I'm trying to like both Dollhouse and SGU without success. With all the actors popping up on the show, Dollhouse is turning into Dollhouse Galactica. And Stargate: Voyager, err Universe.....lost in the delta quadrant...haven't I seen that before?
By Atomm at 5:09 PM ON 10/13/09
I agree the first 2 episodes were kind of slow, but I watched episode 3 last night and it was awesome. Just like season 1, the first part was slow and the second part was great. So far, this season has felt the same way.
I'm equally excited by the preview of episode 4 in two weeks. It look great!
By Drew at 5:28 PM ON 10/13/09
How is "Supernatural" doing ratings-wise this season? I could care less about Dollhouse (I stopped after the 1st episode) or SGU.
By tati at 5:38 PM ON 10/13/09
Wonder where us Hulu viewers fit into those numbers.
Anyway--if they take Dollhouse off the air, what are they gonna give us? Crap. Just like everything else that replaces shows that people on this site actually like to watch--whether it's Farscape, Firefly, TSCCf, or Dollhouse or Jericho or a slew of others.
They pull the shows, leave the fans hanging, and do not replace those shows with anything worth watching.
By Allison&Jack at 9:01 PM ON 10/13/09
Farscape begot BSG, Firefly begot Dollhouse, Invasion begot Flash Forward etc.
For every failed or canceled show there is a show waiting in the wings to take its place. Might take a few years, but eventually something new comes along that is just as exciting and fun to watch.
By ZhaneEndrick at 9:30 PM ON 10/13/09
Dollhouse is a terrible show, without a doubt, but it's ridiculous to 'wish' it would be canceled. I watched the first season, and even the beginning of this season. It had potential and never delivered. So guess what...I stopped watching it.
You know what, if some of you like it, more power to you. I'm glad that a show you like is going to stick around a little longer. Those of you who wish for it to be canceled....just grow up.
By Alhazred at 9:58 PM ON 10/13/09
Dollhouse should be only about 13 episodes. If it gets a third season (I hope!!) it should still be 13!! I think the formula of 22 episodes sometimes stretches the plot too far. thats what happen to Sarah Connors.
By walt at 10:36 PM ON 10/13/09
Victor grinding at the club was hot! Thanks Joss!
By Dave at 12:48 AM ON 10/14/09
@walt, I laughed my ass off at that scene.
One thing no one seems to mention is the lead in. Brothers and Til Death are *terrible* lead ins to Dollhouse. If they want people to watch it live, they should give them something else to watch. Otherwise, of course they'll record it and watch something else live (or venture out of the house on a Friday night).
By tati at 12:49 AM ON 10/14/09
@allison&jack
It's ridiculous to have to wait so long in between programming brainstorms, though LOL
Also--with these improved numbers, now how did it stack up against SG:U??
By Tarc at 2:51 AM ON 10/14/09
Of course, this is just another fake stab at the competition by Siffy. FOX has already stated that all 13 epsiodes of Dollhouse will air regardless of ratings, so there is no danger of Dollhouse disappearing any time soon. I'm starting to dislike this site, and I'm certainly now going to start delaying my SGU viewing until a few days later to make my displeasure with siffy known.
By spda242 at 5:18 AM ON 10/14/09
I don't get what the point is with Dollhouse? Joss Whedon are one of the most talented people in television and I love his previous work! He should be able to do so much more with the show than to figure out who Dushku should sleep with this episode!
SGU has been really dissapointing so far, 3 episodes nothing has happend and I don't get the casting so far but 3 episodes is nothing so I will continue to watch :D
The last 2 seconds of last weeks episode was a little bit cool though.
By MalNess at 7:05 AM ON 10/14/09
YEAH! Its my favorite show (since BSG)... and Its tied with FireFly as my favorite Joss show. If you don't like it, you haven't been watching. Now its on us to get the numbers up so a third season happens (yes, I said it... bite me :-) . Woo Hoo!
By Fudgins at 10:38 AM ON 10/14/09
When are networks going to learn that scifi-centric programming, which caters mostly to a demographic hooked on technology, gadgets and computers, are turning to alternatives such as hulu and other online viewing sources. These ratings systems need a serious overhaul. I haven't watched a comercial in 3 years and I NEVER watch a show when it airs. I'm sure I'm not the only one that records multiple episodes and catches up on them all at once. How many people out there are the same way on shows like Dollhouse, Terminator, or even Stargate & Sanctuary. I would venture a guess that 20% of the audience at least doesn't watch it live, or in the first week it airs, and potentially watches it online.
By archer75 at 11:31 AM ON 10/14/09
Happy to hear this. I love the show and hope it gets a 3rd season. That said I DVR everything. I don't watch live tv at all. And I usually wait till I have a few shows in a series built up and then I watch them all at once.
By baron_elric at 12:58 PM ON 10/14/09
I'm very glad to see the ratings with DVR use factored in.
Bigal, I watched the first season for the writing and the supporting cast. I've never been very impressed by Eliza Dushku--until this season. The writing is better, and Eliza is really acting. It's been a pleasure to watch her develop her character(s) this year and I'll be watching as much as Fox will allow Whedon to make for us.
By Kate at 10:35 PM ON 10/14/09
Who expected Dollhouse's DVR numbers?
FOX Broadcasting - they're the same as the DVR numbers DOLLHOUSE got last season. Increasing from 1.0 to 1.5 is nothing to crow about. It's still less than half of it's premiere numbers, significantly lower than DH's already low finale numbers from the spring. These are not renewal numbers.
And while everyone is busy high-fiving themselves over the DVR increase, you should remember that the Sarah Connor Chronicles had nearly double the live audience and demo plus even larger percentage and gross audience bumps from DVR viewers last season and it was still canceled.
By kernel_thai at 3:15 AM ON 10/15/09
I watch DH every week via DVR. I dont consider myself a big fan of the show but I will continue to watch. Ive been disappointed that the show has reverted to early season one formula after a strong final two eps last season and the wonderful Epitaph One. I really cant see it being renewed regardless.
I am glad to see a net basing anything on DVR numbers. The future of genre shows rests on the nets realizing that the rating systems no longer work. One of the reasons network viewership continues to errode is their failure to see that genre fans r big time shifter and online viewers. The more they cancel genre shows do to predictable low ratings the more they drive dedicated fans away from tv. Eventually advertisers will realize their key demographic is no longer served by the nets and then ... the clock is ticking.
By GeraldM459 at 12:16 PM ON 10/15/09
Fudgins hit the nail squarely on it's head. I can't remember the last time I actually watch a show during it's orginal air date. I Tivo or Hulu everything that I enjoy from TV.

Ok, so dollhouse lives, but now we need to save Defying Gravity! It deserves it too.
