First glimpse of The Phantom (and his suit!) on Syfy

First glimpse of \<i\>The Phantom\<\/i\> (and his suit!) on Syfy
Producer RHI Entertainment posted a trailer for new The Phantom miniseries that'll be running on Syfy. You don't get to see too much, but there is a look at the controversial Phantom suit, as well as a dig at the classic suit.

This stinks. Where's the Jungle?

By cologeek at 12:16 AM ON 10/02/09

I'm still a fan of the classic suit, but I have to admit, the trailer looked good. It looks like the series will be worth a look.

By skullsplitter at 12:28 AM ON 10/02/09

This could be interesting! it reminds me of the animated phantom 2040 i believe. Lord knows that there needs to be something on syfy.

By Delynn at 12:33 AM ON 10/02/09

DUDE! IS this based on the comic strip that used to run every week in my local newspaper? I never quite understood that guy's backstory. Can't wait to see it!

By Davidkevin at 12:48 AM ON 10/02/09

Since the role of The Phantom passes from father to son in turn to maintain the myth of "the Ghost who Walks", there'd better be an damned good explanation of how "Kit Walker" was separated from his heritage...and where this organization who put him back onto his family track comes from, as that has never been part of The Phantom mythos.

Setting aside that the new costume (not even counting the stupid technobabble to justify it) screws with the image the Mythos supports.

By AngryJonny at 12:51 AM ON 10/02/09

I can see them wanting to improve the suit (and line "I'm not wearing that" was funny), but I really don't like the new one.

The guy playing Gurand (?) does a good job in the trailer; I hope Kit isn't too hip-hop streetwise skater dude (the purple hat was painful); but I'm a sucker for redheads, so let's see how this turns out!

By Wes at 12:59 AM ON 10/02/09

I WAS looking forward to this, but after watching the trailer I won't be tuning in. You've completely ruined the Phantom with that awful suit. I have no idea who designed the suit, but they should have their toys taken away. The classic suit would have been perfect. Why mess with something that works. I'm disappointed.

By theSarge00 at 1:05 AM ON 10/02/09

First Flash Gordon, now this...?

I'm guessing SciFi got some sort of deal on the King Features rights, so look forward to crappy attempts to update Mandrake and Popeye (hint: he'll be an ex-navy seal battling the corpulent big boss of BlutoCorp).

I was never particularly in love with the Phantom outfit design (striped shorts?!) but if they were going to update it, why make it so bulky?

It's a shame since they have access to some great material, and they're going to make people flinch at a pitch for a GOOD version of any of it.

By xjadam at 1:08 AM ON 10/02/09

WOW!!!!

This looks great. I have always been a fan of the Phantom, and would read it every day in the chicago tribune.

It is shows like this that SyFy needs to be doing more of.
Just please put it on fridays!

By Jonas72 at 1:08 AM ON 10/02/09

Now, I used to be a fan of The Phantom, read a LOT of the comics as a kid. But nothing in this trailer, with the exception of the skull motif, reminds me of The Phantom, nothing at all. It looks like they've taken the name and just cobbled together something completely different. (Kinda like The Lawnmower Man)

By cfolliot at 2:03 AM ON 10/02/09

As someone who knows next to nothing about the Phantom other than suffering through a Billy Zane movie, I'm willing to give it a shot if it's any good. As for the suit, it makes sense that he wouldn't want to wear a skintight purple suit, and maybe wants something a little cooler and that might actually help him in some way.

By Eldon at 2:32 AM ON 10/02/09

Cheap. Wake me up when it's over.

By Filmstalker at 4:32 AM ON 10/02/09

Ouch, that's bad. Really bad, and the suit looks like a half-arsed Batman attempt. Is it a tank top with fake body muscles?!

By MJ at 4:40 AM ON 10/02/09

This is the Phantom in name only... you've literally stripped everything that was a part of it, heck, you've even MADE FUN OF one important part!

That's really not even trying!

By Melsner at 4:54 AM ON 10/02/09

The Phantom: Ribbed for her pleasure.

I love their going with the Smallville trick of having Kit wear his superhero color all the time as a civilian... Seems like a terrible way of keeping a secret identity. "Uh, Kit, why is everything in your closet purple? You're either the Phantom or an eccentric old lady."

By Akuma63 at 5:18 AM ON 10/02/09

If you like the original suit watch the Billy Zane film. Only two heroes costumes have been translated to film and did not look foolish and they both begin with "S".

As long as this is not as bad as Flash Gordon I'm willing to give it a shot.

By FresnoTimeLord at 6:03 AM ON 10/02/09

No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No

The One with Billy Zane looked and was alot better!
The Suit is tooo Way Modern!

I`ll never quite grasp the reasoning of taking a concept that has endured and been popular for DECADES and believing that it needs to be 'reimagined' in order to be presentable.
What`s worse, the 'reimagining' amounts to little more than trying to graft elements of other concepts onto the original.

This looks to be 'The Phantom' ala Smallville-meets-Batman Begins and Iron Man.

They should have taken a cue from Moonstone Books and tried for modern stories with a SLIGHT update to the original costume.

This looks like they tried to copy so many other pop sources that they should have just tossed the whole Phantom concept and created something new.
......And INTERESTING.

I can admit that the original Phantom costume was a little effeminate and needed to be butched up, but the "re-imagined suit just looks stupid! Hopefully the story will explain it as something that he cobbled together while a new suit was being designed, ala Batman or Spiderman.

By technoslick at 8:13 AM ON 10/02/09

Gawd...what a waste of investment dollars.

Sayings are sometimes stupid, but often they are the simplest way to get an important point across. Here's one you should have memorized and then put into practice:

"If it's not broke, don't fix it."

You use to be "Sly-Fi." There is nothing sly about dumping good money into a series that will turn away most Phantom fans and uneducate those who would be.

This will be a loser.

By wackamole_atl at 9:32 AM ON 10/02/09

Story looks good, buy the suit really really sucks with a capital suck. It looks like a purple swat guy(or some gi joe action figure never made, for good reason). I have to agree the billy zane suit looked a lot better. Also this guy doesnt look intemidating as the phantom like zane did.

By lastmass at 9:52 AM ON 10/02/09

Other then the new suit it looked good. They better deal with the jungle at some point or its just going to end up being a stupid less interesting Batman.

By TearEmUp at 10:12 AM ON 10/02/09

Maybe its just me. Why does every non-metahuman need a special suit of some sort, in Hollywood's eyes?

Sure, the characters are protected, I get that. But, some of the most compelling story lines in most comics is over coming extraordinary circumstances (often wounded) to accomplish a goal (usually helping someone less fortunate). Give up the psuedo-armor and get back to great charcters.

By Hadrian at 10:44 AM ON 10/02/09

There was an animated series called Phantom 2040 that kept closer to the original suit and story line. It was very good.

WHINE WHINE WHINE!
"we want something new, different, creative!"
" it's not like the original we don't like it!"
"new ideas - no- old ideas - no - it has to be like the (comic)books - no - come up with something new".
If you don't like anything then make your own and then put up with everybody else who thinks your stuff sucks!
I liked the trailer. I'll give it a go.

By AgentSpectrum at 12:12 PM ON 10/02/09

Just what we need, another "reimagining". Every reimagined movie or series I've seen has been way worse than the original. C'mon Syfy, it's "Imagine Greater", not "Reimagine Greater".

By c from illinios at 12:17 PM ON 10/02/09

If they keep the production values, if might be good. It has been impiled that twins run in the Phantom line, so the main character might be from a cadet branch of the family. The Walker line has had centuries to build up a major support network, hell, in the Zane movie he was friends with that British officer.

By tsiper at 1:45 PM ON 10/02/09

wow Awesome I love the Phantom! I really dig the original suit but the new one looks cool too. The old Billy Zane Phantom movie is awesome hopefully this is just as good i will definetly be watching.

By looks bad bad bad at 3:00 PM ON 10/02/09

Oh, this looks bad. But right in line with the usual Scyfy crap, like Mega Mastodon vs. Crocdile Attack 4.
I bet the producers spent upwards of $15 on this drek.

By Jeff from Jersey; yes New Jersey at 4:22 PM ON 10/02/09

It looks like a winner to me. The new uniform will be hard to get used to but the promo looks promising.

By John Duncan Yoyo at 4:52 PM ON 10/02/09

Uggh on the costume. Is this Kit one of the twins or did they go farther up the tree?

One of the conceits of the original material is that the Phantom always dressed alike and didn't change so they thought there was only one man instead of twenty some generations.

I hope that they didn't mess with too much else along the way.

By Ghost Who Walks at 7:18 PM ON 10/02/09

I have no problem with an re-imagining.

Okay a take that back. If something I loved and thought had potential in its own right were reimagined I'd be annoyed. So whether I would accept a reimagining of the Phantom is a good question.

But more to the point--this just looks bad. Re-imagining implies imagination, and I saw none. Yeah yeah, the villainous murderous boardroom scene. Yeah yeah, the training hero scene. Yeah yeah, the dead parents.

It's just crap in a crappy suit.

By Gill Avila at 8:32 PM ON 10/02/09

It ought to be called The Fagthom.

By Mage66 at 10:55 AM ON 10/03/09

Changing the suit is just wrong. And worse, the new suit is awful.

Don't count on me watching this crap.

I agree withe sentiment that says, if you're going to change that much of the character and the story... Just make up a new character name and go for your own creation.

This isn't the Phantom. The figure I just got from www.castawaytoys.com looks fine. The Phantom is a great character as is, No need for a reimaging.

By ustvnut at 12:22 PM ON 10/03/09

To all that say the new suit sucks and the old one 'worked'. Aside from us folk there aint alot of people who know about the phantom. So what if its shiny and new a bigger audience is what the phantom needs and if people give this a shot then a bigger audience it might get. Stop the whining the world isnt pefect and people dont always get what they want. watch it dont watch it but dont moan until you have given it a watch.

By Al at 7:35 AM ON 10/04/09

Batman Begins was good for a reason: They took the best of the original story and put it on screen. The same thing with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

Why, oh why have they taken The Phantom and just ignored everything that made him an icon, while keeping the name and purple suit? No, they "upgraded" the suit too didn't they?

urp! I just saw Dolf back in his Punisher outfit now sorry.

By Geist at 6:04 PM ON 10/05/09

LOL!!!!! (at least put light bending stealth tech in the new suit and be a Ghost that walks)
I'll watch it anyway, how bad could it.... Hang on I saw The 'New' Flash Gordon, that I did not like. I tried to swallow my own tongue than watch it. Thank God for remote controls.

By gto at 6:37 PM ON 10/05/09

new costume sucks. better if he just pulled that purple beanie hat over his head. Did they intentionally make the new costume a hoodie top to appeal to all the chavs out there?

By suteko at 3:54 PM ON 10/06/09

what is it with posters on SyFy? Can't you wait till the first ep of the MINISERIES..catch that miniseries not series, before you trash a show? I am getting disgusted with all the whining and complaining about shows before they even air. Give it a shot, who knows it might be a true and good version. Besdies if I watched the clip right..this kid was orphaned..so he has to make his own version and we are now in the 21st century. The Jungle is concrete..we know that. I plan on watching this, just like any other SyFy miniseries. Their miniseries are really watchable. It is there movie of the week that are bad...okay they are fun bad. Try to remember this is entertainment, if you dont like it just turn it off. If you are offended by something before it airs...well go bakc ot the graphics novels but remember it is still fiction, to be enjoyed.

By ozyoda at 8:20 AM ON 10/07/09

I'm with you 'suteko'

Just cause they have modernised the theme, who says it's a bad thing. The B&W comics we get every week even now in Australia are based on the 21st phantom.

This series is for the 22nd phantom, and phantom 2040, what a waste! Billy Zane and the Phantom movie, OMG, what crap!

Modern phantom, with a funky suit, it couldn't be any worse than the last Superman movie, that was crap!

RHI make B grade series, if you expect any more and you don't get it, then you are stupid.

Enjoy the series as a B grade and you shouldn't be disapointed.

By Necronomic Recovery at 6:42 AM ON 10/08/09

This looks so bland.

And for all those posters complaining that people are making up their minds based on the trailer, let me gently remind you that's what trailers are for.

By jolinar at 11:31 PM ON 10/09/09

The Phantom was the first superhero ever invented. I think about 20 yrs before, Superman was created way back in the 20th century.

By XL at 4:52 PM ON 10/10/09

The movie sounds good, but the suit is stupid looking
The one Billy Zane wears is more like what the
Phantom wore in the comic books. this new one is
just terrible.

By bil2 at 5:50 AM ON 10/21/09

Suit is way too bulky and impersonal. One of the trademarks of the old phantom comics was his piercing eyes from the black eye cover.

Hopefully they change the suit to something that preserves the soul of the original costume and show.

By jet-X95 at 11:54 AM ON 12/23/09

it looks like they tried to mix batman and the punisher together

By alandhopewell at 4:13 PM ON 01/08/10

What is this mania with re-inventing classics? First "ALIAS: STAR TREK", and now this. Next, they'll have the Hoff playing the role.
