Fox can't seem to make up its mind about Joss Whedon's Dollhouse. On the one hand, it renews it despite some of the lowest ratings ever. Then it buries it on Friday night, where its ratings continue to plummet before stabilizing. Then it decides to air all 13 season-two episodes once it's clear a lot of people are watching it on DVRs.
But now comes word that it's pulling it from the schedule entirely during the all-important month of November, the so-called "sweeps" period when the network tries to boost ratings to set its advertising rates.
Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello tweeted the news first:
@EWAusielloFiles Exclusive: Hearing FOX will bench DOLLHOUSE for November sweeps and air back-to-back eps on Friday night in December....
Then the FutonCritic chimed in:
Network sources have confirmed Friday entries "Brothers," "'Til Death" and "Dollhouse" will all go on hiatus after their October 23 airings. A rebroadcast of "House's" two-hour season premiere will sub in for the night on October 30 with additional repeats of "House" and "Bones" taking over for the rest of the month."Dollhouse" will then return with back-to-back originals starting at 8:00/7:00c on December 4, 11 and 18.
This sounds a lot like Fox has decided to burn off the new episodes it just ordered. Sounds like there's some confusion at the network about what to do with the troubled show. What do you think?
By Harlock415 at 1:42 PM ON 10/22/09
How much of thi is also because of the World Series? Nov has always messed up Fox, depending on the series.
By siuengr at 1:43 PM ON 10/22/09
It's a sad sad world that we live in where re-runs of House do better than an original show.
By ATK at 1:46 PM ON 10/22/09
Move Dollhouse and Fringe to Tuesdays so I have something to watch other than Nova.

"Move Dollhouse and Fringe to Tuesdays so I have something to watch other than Nova."
agreed, Tuesday is a wasteland only rivaled by Saturday. But even Saturday has BBC America.

JUST CANCEL THIS CRAP
By UnRiel at 2:18 PM ON 10/22/09
I won't be sad to see this show go. I just re-watched Firefly and damn if the show isn't just as good each time I watch. It would be a sure thing if given another chance, though getting the cast back together would be a challenge.
By mykl at 2:25 PM ON 10/22/09
Should we be shocked by Fox's moves and such? Nope. If Syfy is so much into the genre than they should be producing not only “Dollhouse” but take the Terminator series as well and really start doing some good Sci-Fi instead of another dumb Stargate show and constantly showing bad C movies.
By JJD at 2:30 PM ON 10/22/09
I agree to the Tuesday move. That is currently the black hole of television. The only things on TV are shameless reality crap shows and NCIS. Awful. Just awful. Tuesdays used to be good at one point last year. Give me something to waste my time those nights!
By scifi-ED at 2:31 PM ON 10/22/09
And cancel 2 hours of dancing?
What will the brainless drones watch?
By slacey at 2:32 PM ON 10/22/09
Totally agree about moving it to Tuesday. I have nothing to watch on Tuesdays but 10 shows to watch on Thursday. I'd rather have nothing to watch on Friday nights than the middle of the week.
By UnRiel at 2:39 PM ON 10/22/09
I agree with mykl. SyFy knows better than any network how much fan base the shows that fail on other networks have. How easy can you get? Firefly and TSCC for starters.
By Ryan at 2:43 PM ON 10/22/09
They (FOX) need to bring back Terminator the Sarah Connor Chronicles...
By K'Rik at 2:51 PM ON 10/22/09
Good job FOX . . . at SUCKING!
By divephotog at 2:54 PM ON 10/22/09
Basically, Fox is again admitting their mistakes. (See post 10/16 Fox exec worried he'd "burn in hell" over Dollhouse).
Fox has lost all credibility with Sci-Fi fans, and if it weren't for playoffs, and juvinille animations, probably no one would watch the channel. Seems the only time I tune it in is for the SF.
We won't be able to resurrect Firefly nor T:SCC either, but then again, we won't want Fox resurrected after it dies here soon in the eyes of SF fans. - kh

Cue the "Joss can do no wrong" crowd. There's always a reason a show of his dies, and it's never his fault or that of the actors.
8 years and 2 shows since he could say "Hey guys! Season Three starts soon!"

I can't understand this term of "burying it on friday night"
Is scifi channel burying Stargate and Sanctuary on Friday night also?
By thehomegaman at 3:23 PM ON 10/22/09
@Doug484
Fox is a broadcast network, so it depends on ad revenue. Syfy is cable, so they don't depend on advertising as much as Fox does.
Joss can't make a show that enough people want to watch, so advertisers pay less to run spots, thus less money for Fox.
By asfm at 3:33 PM ON 10/22/09
I'm not American so I don't quite understand how sweeps works, but from this article it sounds like Fox is sucking in its belly while a hot girl is walking past.
Once she's passed by, can't they just exhale and let that flab fly?
By Muldfeld at 3:34 PM ON 10/22/09
I have to say that this is how Sci Fi Wire should break news of a troubled show. Not with invective and "I told ya so" mockery, but this kind of concern. I would have much preferred this kind of tone when mentioning T:TSCC's troubles.
Regarding Dollhouse, I can't fully blame the network, but if they're the ones who insisted on standalones, they're fully to blame because I don't care to watch it anymore.
By chk at 3:35 PM ON 10/22/09
Wow, 10 comments before TSCC was mentioned; the fans are slipping :-). Although I agree with half of the premise; Dollhouse should have been put out of its misery last season.
Big Bang Theory beat House in the ratings this week, which is bad news for House, but I guess re-runs will still pull in more advertising dollars than those three failing shows...
By chawoott at 3:36 PM ON 10/22/09
I don't understand that term "burying it on Friday nights" either. This season is actually awful whether CBS or Fox (nobody watches ABC). 3 shows on Monday, 3 on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday, 3 on Thursday, and 3 on Friday. That's 3 down from last year....
By BadBoy at 4:32 PM ON 10/22/09
Fox promoted the next two upcoming Dollhouse episodes a couple weeks ago and the second one was with Summer Glau!
Now they are pushing that episode that was supposed to air next week until December - we have to wait two months for Summer now, darn it.
By Al at 4:38 PM ON 10/22/09
Fridays. Tuesdays... I don't watch either day or any day during the week. I work early and go home late. Everything is DVR'd and I catch up over the weekend.
Losing the show for a month only makes it harder to remember when it comes back, so I'll just end up missing the rest of the eps. That happened with Jericho. (Frakkin CBS!)
Fox is playing that game too. Fine. Most shows can be found online now anyway. Networks can rot in their ratings gluttony.
By cylon_conspiracy at 5:04 PM ON 10/22/09
As a rule I refuse to watch sci-fi shows on fox because I am the target audience, and I know better than to an invest in a show that will have a 90% chance of being canceled. I'm not going through "Firefly" again.
See Fox? Even though it's from the SAME GUY that made Firefly (one of my favorite shows) I am NOT going to watch it, because I know you don't care about the sci-fi shows you air.
But thanks for putting Family Guy back on the air though. Looks like you could fix at least one mistake.
By diesel at 5:14 PM ON 10/22/09
I'd rather Joss Whedon work on a Buffy, Spike / Illyria / Angel movies for the theaters with the characters from the shows.
Sy Fy, Spike or WB should take over both Dollhouse and Terminator series and put them on Tuesday.
If Sy Fy representatives actually read these comments, I think they'll realize it is a good idea.
The Terminator series was better than the most recent movie.
I also believe Dollhouse will probably improve on Sy Fy because Joss would probably have more creative control. Somehow I think the Fox reps negatively influenced the show like the producers negatively influenced the first Buffy movie. The Buffy Series was a hugh improvement over the film.
By gorehound696 at 5:27 PM ON 10/22/09
I don't really like dollhouse so i don't care much about it.i did love tscc and miss that show.
and i do watch fringe.fringe should of stayed where it was on tuesday nights but fox is stupid and made it move.
yes and they had to make their little speech but that only pissed off us scifi'ers
By Leelioux at 6:34 PM ON 10/22/09
Bring back TSCC. Nobody cares about Dollhouse.
By Craig at 6:43 PM ON 10/22/09
We do read the comments diesel, although we probably won't be picking up either show, even assuming they're offered to us, for a variety of reasons. I've discussed this a lot over on the @Syfy Twitter feed.
By MandyJane at 6:54 PM ON 10/22/09
Dollhouse had a great premise, but I never could get into it. Too many silly situations, and Eliza isn't a very good actress.
By Randy at 7:13 PM ON 10/22/09
Kill the show already, it's so lame. Whedon's worst work.
By Gilveron at 7:58 PM ON 10/22/09
Advertising dollars are the lifeblood of the television industry. It just so happens that advertising was one of the sectors of the economy hardest hit by the economic downturn. Revenues are down across the board, and even bona fide hits like CBS' "Without a Trace" could not weather the storm. It boggles my mind that FOX ever renewed "Dollhouse". They must have had faith that the name Joss Whedon would bring in dollars to the network, and as far as I can tell, it has not.
No cable network will pick up a failed series from a broadcast network, regardless of its fan base. The amount of money necessary to produce a primetime network show is far more than any cable network has or is willing to spend on a show that has already failed, with very, very few exceptions (NBC-Universal owned USA Network now produces the procedural Law & Order: Criminal Intent, which NBC then rebroadcasts later on their schedule, and there is talk that TNT may pick up the recently canceled NBC show "Southland," which was initially renewed by NBC). That's the nature of the beast; TV shows exist to sell ad space, not the other way around.
By jedimom at 8:26 PM ON 10/22/09
I say the suits at FOX are pulling it off during sweeps to try and save face form the EPIC FAIL that ids their decision to axe TSCC for this dreck. Whedon;s talents are best spent elsewhere.
The suits would be FORCED to cancel it after an epic sweeps fail, what is with the repeated saves of a subpar show? Hmmmmnn inquiring minds want to know what the suits have invested in this personally....
By AngryJonny at 8:50 PM ON 10/22/09
I see a lot of Terminator fans here who are not crazy about Dollhouse. Below is a repost of a lengthy comment I made under the 10/20/09 article, "Joss Whedon charms us with jokes about Dollhouse".
I repost it because no Terminator fan seems willing to or capable of refuting my criticisms nor is anyone willing to disagree with my opinions on the positives of Dollhouse.
Consider yourselves challenged...
"The reason why I agree with Fox's choice of Dollhouse over Terminator is because the former's characters are actually interesting. Nothing ever developed with the plots or characters on Terminator.
I like Lena Headey, but Sarah was DULL. Three dots? C'mon, that's an amateurish element a film student writing his first screenplay would come up with to motivate a character to action, even if she is insane. The sleep clinic episode -- is she actually in the clinic or a van with a dead man? -- was ludicrous.
The outdoor public memorial episode was artificial and silly. Complete strangers would just open up to John Connor? I don't think so. He's one of the creepiest emo kids ever. No one would talk to him for fear he'd stab them.
Some of the casting was downright horrendous. Leven Rambin (Riley) and Stephanie Jacobsen (Jesse) were awful. Jacobsen seems to think acting tough means having a permanent crease in your brow and acting sexy means jutting out your chin and never fully closing your mouth.
But some casting was great. Summer Glau's Cameron had a lot of potential, but the creators squandered it. The library episode tried to mimic subtlety, but it was a facade that resulted in nothing of substance being said. Cameron just isn't able to feel anything for the guy with cancer. What a shocker. But was she trying to or not? I found myself not caring out of frustration.
Brian Austin Green was the best cast member, but there were entire episodes without Reese. Where did he go during these long absences? I bet the creators didn't know.
The only other second season storyline of interest was Weaver, Ellison, and Cromartie, but, again, they didn't spend nearly enough time on them to warrant continuing the series. They should have maintained the first season storyline of trying to stop Judgment Day from occurring by tracking down the beginnings of SkyNet. That doesn't mean they needed to have a Terminator-of-the-week format. They just needed to do something as interesting as the first season. That's why I watched the second season when I really didn't want to -- because I kept waiting for it to get good again.
And I think that was the main problem with the series that its fans don't seem to get: It groped at being profound or fascinating, but it wasn't. Two seasons and in the end, it amounted to zero, and not because the series wasn't given a chance. It WAS. So now it's Dollhouse's turn.
Speaking of which, Dollhouse may not be perfect, but its problems are far from the ones Terminator suffered. Instead of starting strong and going nowhere like Terminator, Dollhouse is going in the opposite direction.
They started finding their footing in the second half of the first season and have been progressively establishing interesting themes, an overarching plot, and character arcs. The series is always asking questions, like "Who are you really at your core with everything else stripped away? Are you good or evil?" I find that very engaging.
And as far as the actors and characters, many have already said on these message boards that Eliza Dushku has finally started acting, which is nice to see; Echo is growing immensely as a character; incorporating Ballard into the Dollhouse was a great idea that's opened up a totally new direction; Enver Gjokaj (had to look that up) is endearing as Victor; Olivia Williams manages to strike a terrific balance between making Adelle DeWitt intimidating yet engaging and even vulnerable; and even Topher, who annoyed the hell out of me in the beginning, has become a more fully realized character with interesting strengths and faults.
That's not to say I love the entire cast. I'm still not sure what I make of Dichen Lachman as Sierra. She's talented, but there's something about her that irritates me. And I just hope they don't loose any more focus on Harry Lennix's character (Boyd)."
By lfhlaw at 12:25 AM ON 10/23/09
Well.....I enjoy Dollhouse and care about Dollhouse.
The 13th episode of Dollhouse "Epitaph One" Is quite helpful in tell you where the series is going. Granted it is a huge spoiler in some effect but it takes you to where the show was headed. AND so the story line is to get there. Remember These players are "dolls" with no memory or personality per se. A Blank slate, but then imprinted with someone else's memory or talents. I will say that Eliza wasn't my favorite actor and she seems to even grate me a bit in this show. It should center around the Dollhouse and be more of an ensemble cast than an "eliza" Show. Granted Echo is more of a loose cannon "doll" so far as I can see vs Sierra or Victor. And so she is important in that sense.
I wish Whedon would stop going to Fox, perhaps he should try the CW lol. if Supernatural had been on Fox it probably would've been canned quickly too.
By KLD at 2:59 AM ON 10/23/09
FOX = Clueless. I agree with the two posters above: Move Dollhouse and Fringe to Tuesdays so I have something to watch other than Nova.
By Mahnmut at 8:46 AM ON 10/23/09
Pull the show completely, burn all traces and bury them deep underground. No one should have to watch Eliza's acting.
By Gilveron at 1:41 PM ON 10/23/09
@AngryJonny: The reason no one has bothered to refute your post is that you actually have a well thought-out, substantive post and say more than just, "Dollhouse sucks, bring back Terminator." It's like arguing with Right-Wing talk show hosts; you can't expect a civil discourse on the actual pros and cons of an issue with an adversary who is only interested in childishly gainsaying any argument you make. I for one agree with most of your points.
By Melloblue at 11:04 PM ON 10/23/09
I love this show. Fox should move it and team it with one of it's higher rated shows, like House, Bones, or Lie to Me. Also, it might do well on Sunday where there is currently no shows worth wasting electricity on.
By Tarc at 7:43 AM ON 10/24/09
Considering that the last episode was totally brilliant (as have been several of the others), Dollhouse, as usual, gets a bad rap here and in other palces. It's uneven and not always perfectly acted, but it's pretty fascinating sci-fi with increasingly ineteresting plots and characters.
By Staar84 at 6:41 PM ON 10/24/09
Fox mishandled a sci fi show? That's so not like them! It's not like they did that to Firefly, or The Sarah Conner Chronicles, or Futurama...oh wait...
By gunhed508 at 2:08 PM ON 10/26/09
Honestly, Whedon should give up on the major networks (especially Fox) and do something progressive, such as create shows exclusively for on-demand internet-based groups, such as Hulu. If I had to guess, I'd say that many, if not most, of Whedon's fanbase have internet access, anyway. This seems the way of the future, the thing that the TV networks are scared of / confused about.
