If you're one of the people who saw the Wachowski brothers' Matrix movies and thought, "Hey! They're just ripping off Ghost in the Shell!", have we got news for you:
DreamWorks is developing a new, 3-D live-action version of the story, best known as the 1995 anime movie that was based on Masamune Shirow's manga franchise.
Here's how Variety reports it:
DreamWorks has tapped scribe Laeta Kalogridis [Shutter Island] to adapt the Japanese manga property "Ghost in the Shell."DreamWorks is making the futuristic police thriller as a 3D live-action film.
Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment are attached to produce and originally brought the project to DreamWorks.
The manga, first published in 1989, was one of the first cyberpunk-ish comic works that melded the concepts of cyborgs, police procedural and dystopian futuristic urban environments and influenced not only the Matrix movies but also lots of other sci-fi books, comics, films and video games.

They'll ruin it somehow. Everything good in one form cannot always be translated to another, and mostly especially not into movies.

Let it be said from the get go that I do not follow the seemingly standard, "Hate it in advance in-case it stinks," mind set when it comes to taking a property from one medium to another; however, I will say that in regards to this project my only real concern is the scribe they tapped to put the over-all script together. I mean...the writer who put together Shutter Island? Wouldn't it be more, I don't know, logical to find a writer who has shown a great talent in interpreting or creating Science Fiction? I mean, at it's core, Ghost in the Shell is a metaphysical and psychological look into man's relationship with their own souls (or ghosts) and technology. Basically what the Matrix tried to duplicate and kind of dropped the ball with. Again, when it comes to something as rich and with as much pedigree as Ghost in the Shell, I will have faith that the film will at the least hold true to the core concepts; but, in truth, I kind of hope a new writer pops up along the way. Though, when one dwells on it further, Ms. Kalogridis may just surprise everyone.

Just so long as Keanu Reeves isn't in it...

This could be good, I just hope they don't turn it into a wham pow explosion fest and they don't do something like cast Charlize Theron for the lead. not that i have anything against her, I just thought she was a bad choice as the female lead for another sci-fi favorite.

@Section_9
Well, Ms Kalogridis has been involved with Birds of Prey and Bionic Woman - two pretty good TV series'. I know she's done some initial scripts for other sci-fi-comic-movie things; this might be her chance to shine?
Not optimistic, but here's hoping....

I heard Keanu is going to be in the Cowboy Beebop adaptation. Lucky for us he doesn't really fit any of the roles in Ghost in the Shell.

I caught my breath on this one... I LOVE the Major! I can't imagine who they would cast for her role, but she has to be pretty d@mn kick-@ss!
All I can say is...please don't mess it up... please don't mess it up... please don't mess it up!!
By Dawg66 at 4:17 PM ON 10/23/09
I can't wait to see who is cast in the role of Major Tits.

If they bring it overseas all of it is going to have to change. No cool names like Motoko, or Batu. Everything is going to be westernized which is going to be the big challenge of preserving the essence of GIS. The Manga and Anime purest will start a revolt!

I really loved this series. I seriously hope they don't screw it up when they redo it. Can't wait to see it, regardless!

all i ask is they better not make it for kids.. and better do this movie justice.. americans have a tendency to think they can do better then the original and frak it up.
like street fighter and dbz.. stick to what the fans know, and what they expect retards

After Johnny Neumonic and the Matrix Trilogy why would they want to backtrack to Ghost in the Shell? Dreamworks is so behind the times. Before you know it, Japan has already brought the concept to the next level.
By xdeathknightx at 12:21 PM ON 10/24/09
Ah well at least they can't screw up as bad as with the live action Dragonball movie huh :)
By SethSJ at 12:05 PM ON 10/25/09
Chances are it'll be based in New York City, which really sucks because America's supposed to be an empire. Who should play the Major: Kate Beckinsale, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, or MAYBE SOMEONE ASIAN!! PURE ASIAN!! Please not Meghan Fox!!
By superfly at 6:50 PM ON 10/25/09
@sethsj. Major Motoko is not fully human, so she doesn't have to be "asian". They must be acrobatic, tall, beautiful have some muscle, a little devious, but not be aggressive. Like CARRIE ANNE MOSS!!!!
The only americans that could do this right would be the Wachowski Brothers making a modified version of Ghost in The Shell 2: Innocence.
This movie could be really easy for them to screw up. It needs a solid theme. If they don't include that certain type of philosophical dialogue and camera work, its going to be messed up. There is a big chance this movie could be boring in the wrong hands.
Here is how you do it: Make Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence instead of Ghost in the Shell. Replace the human cop sidekick with Motoko herself. Cast Ron Pearlman as Batou, and get someone decent for Motoko. That way I'm not bored with the ending of GITS, which I've seen a thousand times, and don't have to suffer through an americanized version of Motoko's death/rebirth.

I'm posting again to re-emphasize what I wrote and to say that doing this is like remaking Bladerunner. Except Ghost in the Shell is already a movie, not a TV show or book, and its currently more culturally important than Bladerunner, with a better story. Its bigger than Akira. So don't mess this one up!

Ron Pearlman as Batou? wow that would be perfect; as for Motoko, that's tough, hmmm, Uma Thurman?
By cyber-brandon167 at 3:02 PM ON 10/28/09
Ghost In The Shell (GITS) is one of my all time favorite anime series. The thing that bothers me the most is the decision to shoot GITS in 3-D. That would be stupid. It will be as unwatchable as that CGI "Beowolf" movie back in 2008. These studio wizards should actually watch GITS and take notes. They should treat this award winning franchise with all the respect that it deserves and not engage in any marketing gimmicks that are used to dazzle children. You want proof of another good anime title that became a flop live-action movie? "Blood: The Last Vampire". If you can't do it right, don't do it at all.

SWEET!

I would hire Ron Howard to direct Ghost in the Shell for two reasons:
1. His direction of Angels and Demons matches the style of what Ghost in the Shell requires: action, reflection, action, reflection alternation.
2. Ghost in the Shell in the end is NOT an action movie ---- it is a philosophical one with a much more contemplative, slower pace than was it required in conventional action movies in its genre. Ron Howard has demonstrated that he can handle heavy concepts with meaningful, story forwarding action in Angels and Demons.
Directors who are not suited: Michael Bay,
the directior of 2012 and The Day the Earth Stood, the director of Equilibrium, Steven
Spelberg,
Peter Jackson and the director of District 9
would be excellent .
My only request however : do not do not do not do not do not screw this up. . . .

Okay, I'm gonna say that a live-action GITS does sound appealing, but I'm as skeptical as any fan out there. As far as director, I'd look at Ridley Scott for the director's chair due to his exceptional work in "Bladerunner" and "Alien", but I'm not too sure about the screenwriters they've chosen. I would have gone with William Gibson who wrote "Neuromancer" or any number of sci-fi authors who've dabbled in cyberpunk or post-cyberpunk. But, that's just me and I doubt Steven Spielberg will read this and agree. Anyway, 3D? Just make it 2D and use the extra cash wisely. Ron Pearlman as Batou? And even though I hope this doesn't happen, it'll probably be set somewhere in America even though the whole countries been sliced into three separate nations at this point. I don't know, one part of me wants this, and the other is content just having the original film and series. And why are just adapting the original movie? Just make new story placed two years after "Solid State Society" like 2036 or something. That'd be easier, but whatever. And Peter Jackson or Neil Blompkampf wouldn't be too bad a choice either. Look, if they're worried about Americans not getting it if set in Japan, then do what they did in "The Last Samurai" have a CIA agent from the American Empire head into Japan to aid Section 9 with some crazy conspiracy or predicament that affects both countries. It'll be in Japan to satisfy the fans, and you have the CIA guy to provide the American perspective alongside the Japanese perspective creating a nice dualism that'll give the movie some tension, complexity, and character conflict. It worked in the Jungle Cruise episode of GitS SAC season 1. Well, anyway, this was a bit long, but I've got what I've wanted to say. Hope that someone with a brain and some balls gets this live-action GitS on target.
