Green Lantern moves out of Oz. Does that mean a delay?

\<i\>Green Lantern\<\/i\> moves out of Oz. Does that mean a delay?

Aside from Batman, it doesn't seem like any film version of DC Comics heroes can catch a break: While Marvel's Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and other franchises zoom ahead, DC's various projects remain stalled or stillborn. The latest is Green Lantern, which is now having to rethink a decision to shoot in Australia because of costs.

Here's how The Hollywood Reporter said it:

The falling U.S. dollar has forced Warner Bros. Pictures to reassess the viability of shooting a number of projects in several countries, after confirming Friday that its pulling production of Green Lantern out of Australia.

The studio said that "the current global economic situation, including fluctuations in currency valuation and overall costs," forced the decision, in a statement issued through agency Screen NSW.

(That's New South Wales.)

Where will Green Lantern move? Either Mexico or Canada. The change will no doubt push the movie farther back, though it was scheduled to begin shooting in November under director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale), starring Wolverine's Ryan Reynolds, with an eye to a summer 2011 release.

How about shooting in the US and giving American film industry workers a break?

Naah that would make to much sense

Perhaps the changes in WB regarding it's structure with DC will help fix these issues. There appears little confidence in the DC products and their marketability. IF the thought it could make money, they would not be arguing where to film it and just make it already. This will be discussed on Hour 42 this Sunday! www.hour42.com

i have to totally agree with the first paragraph of this article. Frankly I don't get it; Almost every Marvel comic I read as a child seems to hit the big scream(i mean)screen running! Even the one shots; Electra, Daredevil, Punisher etc; were great!! D.C has all of these great ideas Wonderwoman, Batman, Superman, Black Canary, Green Arrow, Aquaman. and with the exception of the first two, nothing else seems to get off the ground. I'm thinking they are not praying to the right Gods and Goddesses. Cause Sumtins Up or not; as the case may be.!!!

Dc does very well in animated films they should make a wonder wonder cartoon series for likeone or two seasons or the flash or something imo, they will get some good live action ones out in a few years tho i think

Just because they know it will make money, doesn't mean they should shoot it for more money.

If the current prod. cost is 100 mill. But moving to Mexico, will make it 80 mill. Why would you not do that?

However, I completly agree with FredSimkin. Everyone blasts other industries for outsourcing work.

But what about Hollywood? Spend the 80 to 100 million shooting the movie here, help the economy, give people work.

WB/DC should take a look at Marvel. What if Warner Bros set up a separate shingle for DC Films. Make it a smaller production house separate from Warner Bros. and build a consistent production team that can create continuity amongst the films and keep the wheels moving. With so much on its plate, it feels like Warner Bros Proper just keeps pushing the DC stuff off to the side. How long has SuperMax been in development hell for? Long enough for another film with the same exact name and VERY similar concept to swoop in and get made before Green Arrow even finds an actor.

Its complete bull. Marvel are having no problems in creating there movies. Shame the DC is owned by WB. If it wasn't it could have created its own studios like Marvel with as little imput froma major studio as possible.

it does seem to be a total reveresal, what i mean is that it used to be marvel had good animated movies and tv series and DC were the leaders in live action ( dark night and watchmen aside).
surely there has to be a person at Warners and DC with enough balls to get their act together and get their butt in gear and stop playing catch up.
dark night and watchmen are arguably the greatest comic to movie films followed closely by x-men,
how many DC films in the last 5 years to marvels, its amazing that warners are dragging their feet on this.
there are fans out there, myself included have dreamt of our heros going live, so whats the problem DC/WARNERS, GROW A SET and lets get these movies made.

The problem with filming in America, beyond costs, is quite simply, we're are such a overdeveloped, overwhelmed and over-photographed country that we can't easily function as places other then the United States.

You show somebody a picture of rocks in Arizona and you know that is Arizona, we recognize the colours, the way the rocks are uniquely formed. It could never function as a Mars planet or any alien planet. Other countries are under-developed and more respectful of the environment so they can be other countries, Canada works for snowy tundras, forested Kashyyyk planets, desert planets, and in a pinch, Kansas. Americans are the primary market of concern and Americans know American, they know Ontario from Boston, they recognize areas.

hello, most of GL stories take place in the good old U.S.A or off planet.so they can shoot it any ware.

By hermy at 9:53 PM ON 10/16/09

iron man was shot in California.with the desert being afghanistan.plus with GL most of it will be shot on sound stages and CGI anyway.so if they do it here it just means they won't have that long ass flite.and it great to see a DC movie that isen't always batman or superman

Coming from Australia, and having friends working in the film industry here, its a massive blow when major productions are pulled (justice league, the fountain et al). Australia has 1st class filming facilities and amazing production crews. Why should Hollywood get to make every movie under the sun? Didn't we do a good job on the Matrix movies, Superman & Star Wars? I can understand the economics of it, but don't assume that other countries shouldnt be making films!

Has anyone seen the Wolverine and Iron Man Anime trailors that came out a couple months ago? DC is really starting to fall behind in all areas of entertainment.

By BlakOpal at 4:15 PM ON 10/17/09

Here's an idea. Shoot it in Michigan! We have a movie studio being built in Troy. Whip It, Transformers 1 & 2, The Island, the upcoming Machete...... All filmed in Michigan!!

We're booming for the film industry.

By sprdave5150 at 9:29 AM ON 10/19/09

Obama wont let it be shot in the states. it would mean he cares about the American worker.

By hebramleigh at 11:19 AM ON 10/19/09

The reason films aren't shot in America as much as in the past it simple: money. The film industry and unions have driven costs so high that you either film overseas or expand your budget to the point that it is difficult to make a profit.

As for the statement that we film in other countries because they are "more respectful of their environment", perhaps you should do a bit of research. The US has more protected wilderness preserve land than most any other individual nation on Earth. Desert, tundra, mountains, or beach, examples of every imaginable terrain can still be found in US in pristine or near pristine condition despite the claims of alarmist environmentalists.
But don't take my word for it; simple do an internet search on the total amount of land held as parks and wilderness by the United States government and private organizations.

BlakOpal... Is that you Jeff Daniels? Getting the upper hand in Michigan?

By saywhat at 7:09 AM ON 10/26/09

sprdave5150 - What the hell does Obama have to do with where films are shot? Nothing, so stop being dumb.
