'Hannibal Lecter' will be Thor's daddy

\'Hannibal Lecter\' will be Thor\'s daddy

The cast of director Kenneth Branagh's upcoming Thor movie just gets more interesting: Captain Kirk's dad is going to play Marvel's hammer-wielding Norse god, and now comes news that Hannibal Lecter himself, Anthony Hopkins, will play Thor's big daddy: Odin, king of Asgard, Variety reports.

Makes sense: Hopkins has played kings before, notably Hrothgar in Bob Zemeckis' cartoon Beowulf.

According to Variety, Hopkins will pay father to both Thor (Star Trek's Chris Hemsworth) and his brother, the trickster god Loki, played by Tom Hiddelston. Queen Amidala, Natalie Portman, is Thor's love interest, the mortal human Jane Foster.

The film tells the story of Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior of Asgard. After his reckless actions reignite an ancient war, his father banishes him to Earth to live among humans. He learns the meaning of heroism when he stands tall as his arch-enemy from home sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

The script was written by Mark Protosevich and Fringe writer/producers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller.

The Mighty Thor, his hammer and winged helmet will arrive in theaters on May 20, 2011.

"The Mighty Thor will arrive in theaters on May 20, 2011."

Anthony Hopkins should still be alive by then...

GODDAMMIT! Loki is NOT Thor's brother! He's just a sidekick to the thunder god, but he's not even an Aesir. Or has Marvel screwed this up all these years? This is going to SUUUUUUUUUCK!

By Knightstrike at 5:19 PM ON 10/30/09

loki was adopted by Odin in the comics so he is in fact thor's brother

By Falconerwrong at 5:36 PM ON 10/30/09

Loki was Thor's adopted brother. He was born a frost giant, but was adopted by Odin and raised as his son. This is not from the comics but from the mythology.

No, no, NO! Don't use the standard Marvel Thor, use Ultimate Thor. That character is so much more interesting and fun, would make a much better movie in my opinion.

Wow. Who the hell gets pissed about Loki being depicted or not as Thor's brother and an Aesir (whatever that is)?

If that's your reaction, Falconer, to this news, I'd really hate to see just how thermonuclear you get on issues of genocide and other true tragedies. Jesus, get some perspective on life.

C'mon ON!!! why is this necessary? this is just like Keith Richards being Jack Sparrow's dad in Pirates. it's just so stupid. i'm already exhausted just thinking about it.

"capt. kirk's dad"??? I thought the actor who played the young capt. kirk was playing thor?

By Angry Robot at 12:16 PM ON 11/02/09

@ Cyrus

You're right. It's exactly like that. Except that, as far as I can tell, Anthony Hopkins was not the inspiration for Thor and is actually an actor.

Perhaps you're confused as to who Anthony Hopkins is...

Ahhh Angry Robot you missed the point and made an ass out of yourself in the process. I think he's talking about the lack of importance who plays Odin. (although I happen to think it's cool and important) Keith Richards not only was the inspiration for Sparrow he was in the last movie as...wait for it....his Dad

@ Suntzu

That was the exact point I was making. Perhaps you don't understand sarcasm?
